May 12, 2010Does slackware 13 have any dependencies on a modular kernel? I am going to make the kernel without modules and wanted to know if this will not work or if it will be painful and still work.

Feb 18, 2010I just want to know what is the default Fedora 32 bit kernel - does it support more than 4G memory. I would like to save myself from compiling custom kernel and all following fiddling (nvidia drivers, virtualisation software etc) and 64bit OS is not for me - too many apps that I need are missing, of poor quality or need more manual intervention. Actually if bigmem / whatever it is called is configured in the default kernel, this may be the reason to switch. I intend to use 4 to 8 GB memory and it's a desktop, so server builds (like Ubuntu) are not for my taste.

Jun 10, 2009I've just downloaded F11 i386 installation DVD. I installed it on my laptop and just now noticed that PAE kernel got installed. Isn't PAE for systems with RAM >3.2 GB? It's a pretty old laptop (P3, 256MB ram). So, is PAE kernel ok for me or should I reinstall from scratch and use some specific switches in the installer to get non-PAE kernel? I've also read that Yum doesn't recognize PAE packages dependencies and will install non-PAE kernel modules if I try to install let's say Nvidia driver or so.

Dec 27, 2009Lately when Fedora 12 updates the kernel it defaults to the last kernel entry and not the newest one. However I set grub to boot entry 0 as the default which is allways the new kernel. It runs like this fine until the kernel updates then it seems to change from 0 to 1 on its own is this a new planned aspect of the new kernel being installed?

Jul 6, 2010I am trying to write modular program but when I try to compile I come to know I don't have any files in /usr/src/linux. I have installed fedora 12 which has 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686.PAE. I am including in my code:

linux/module.h
Those are not present directory in /usr/src/linux is not present. My goal is to compile modular programs.

OpenSUSE Install :: Differences Between Kernel Default And Kernel Desktop?
Jul 21, 2010differences between Kernel Default and Kernel Desktop? I've found some past threads like this link and this other link, and some other google info, which suggest the only difference would be the io scheduler. Also, I see the default grub choice is "Desktop" and not "Default", so I take this as a suggestion to prefer one over the other.
However, my broadcom 4312 wireless only works on the "default" and not on the "desktop" kernel, so I guess there must be other differences. I just want to evaluate which one is the less long-term risk option to go.
Fedora :: Config File Still Sets The Default To "1" But If Left The Automatic Boot It Will Boot The Previous Kernel?
Aug 17, 2010After a kernel update, the system always updates the GRUB menu, and the newer kernel is the default boot option.However, after an update on my F13 X64 system, the GRUB menu was updated, the config file still sets the default to "1" but if i left the automatic boot it will boot the previous kernel... am I crazy or missing something here?Here is my /boot/grub/grub.conf file:

OpenSUSE :: Live Cds Why Use Kernel-default
Jun 2, 2011There is something what confuses me:
- I thought that the kernel-desktop is the one optimized for desktop usage
- The KDE and Gnome live cds are used by people who want to use their OS as a desktop. I mean I doubt that anyone would install a KDE live cd on a server
So the live cds why have the default kernel installed on them? Just of curiousity, it is not a big deal to remove the default kernel and install the desktop one, but if the desktop kernel gives better experience on the desktop, that one should be used on the live cds too.

Jun 7, 2010I recently installed Squeeze. I noticed there are 2 main kernels installed. One first one at the top is 2.6.32-trunk-686 and the other is 2.6.32-3-686. At the time, I did not know or think much about it. Now when I try to get linux headers to compile drivers, I am not finding them. I also read some problems with trunk kernels.
How can I assign the 2.6.32-3-686 kernel to be the default in grub? Is it OK to use it as the main kernel?
Do I need to upgrade the trunk kernel to rid of trunk or just don't use it?

Sep 15, 2010I have Opensuse 11.3 with kernel 2.6.34.4-0.1-default i686 and use KDE4-4.5.1 from the new OpenSuse repo. My system sometimes freezes while using Firefox or Chrome and also sometimes playing with Kpatience or browsing images with Gwenview.
My video card is an old Sapphire Radeon working with radeon module and desktop effects are off. The only way to bring up the system is hard resetting. I tried also the desktop kernel with no difference.

Unfortunately, with the various 2.6.32 kernels neither hibernate nor suspend work, so I've installed and use the last 2.6.31 kernel that came with Karmic.Now, I'd like to set it as default, so that I don't need to actively choose it when I boot. The problem is that I can't find a way to set Grub (version 2.0, or 1.96rc, can't remember) to pick the 2.6.31 kernel and if I try to uninstall the 2.6.32-23 kernel synaptic says that linux-generic and linux-headers will also be uninstalled (not just the parts specific to 2.6.32-23).

Sep 24, 2010I am currently using Ubuntu Lucid on my desktop (stats are in my signature). I have an older computer, with an Intel i8xx chipset as my graphics card. This has had some instabilities on the previous two Ubuntu releases for me (10.04 and 9.10) which I am hoping will be fixed for Maverick, but thankfully the Ubuntu Wiki managed to provide me with fixes.
After much tweaking and some luck, I was able to get Ubuntu to work without constantly crashing on kernel versions 2.6.32-21, 2.6.32-22 and 2.6.32-23. Unfortunately, when 2.6.32-24 and 2.6.32-25 came out, I was unable to cease the crashes.
While I am still looking into tweaking the latest kernel version to work perfectly, I would like to know if there was a way for Ubuntu to default boot into a kernel other than the latest. This is because I want to run 2.6.32-23 by default (the latest kernel that I have tweaked properly) until I can configure 2.6.32-24 and 2.6.32-25 as well. I have less computer-savvy family members that use my desktop as well, and it would be a pain for them to have to press shift at every boot and have to select the correct kernel.
Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 PAE Kernel Loads By Default?
Apr 28, 2011After Upgrading to 11.04 32bit, the PAE Kernel loads by default. This would be great except it hangs probably due to graphics not loaded properly.
Regardless I do not want to use PAE Kernel on this dev system I have and luckily it looks like the Generic Kernel of the right version is in a sub-Menu called Older Linux Versions.
I have played with Grub2 before making minor changes but this one is a little beyond me. How can I move the regular Generic Kernel from the sub-Menu and make it my default Grub2 kernel so I boot to it automatically.
Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 - PAE Kernel Installed By Default?
Jul 30, 2011During tests with 11.04, I met very big problems on my HP ProBook 6550b, which is all intel , but rather recent hardware, so it is 64bit. When I install ubuntu, the -pae kernel is installed by default. All did work so far with 10.10, but with 11,04 I get frequent crashes, particularly all kind of browsers will crash every few minutes, no way any flash will work, also office seems to freeze the system very frequently.
This regardless if the 11.04 is run from life CD or installed properly. Somewhere I read, that such behavior was cured when the -pae kernel was replaced by its normal (non -pae) variety. On a very old toshiba, with some old celeron, I may not have the initial performance, but crashes are 90 percent less frequent, as there ubuntu chooses non -pae kernel automatically. Therefore I am thinking the -pae kernel could be the problem.

May 19, 2010I already know how to replace the kernel used to boot up the cd installer. /kernels directory. What I really would like to know is, is it possible to replace the kernel that gets installed by default with my own kernel build? Currently I have my kernel placed in the /kernels directory and that works fine for startup and installation. But then when I boot off the hard drive the kernel that is being used is not the one I placed in the Kernels directory.

When I reproduce a video from one of my USB disk, after a while it stops waiting for the disk, then go on. This behavior is not related with the program used to reproduce (Kaffeine, Mplayer, VLC) and is present in both my USB disks, one with ext3 fs and the other with ntfs fs.

Dec 23, 2009Recently, I upgraded 11.1 to 11.2. Everything seemed to go fine. However, for some reason the system boots with the debug kernel - 2.6.31.5-0.1-debug. According to Yast every kernel under the sun seems to be loaded on the system. Grub, however, gives two choices - one for the regular and one for the failsafe system. They both boot to the debug kernel.
How do I get this thing to load into the regular, as opposed to the debug, kernel?
