Fedora :: Can't Boot System Even Into Init Mode 3?
Jun 24, 2011
I upgraded to Fedora 15 using preupgrade after I failed to upgrade or install it clean through DVD. But, after the preupgrade process finished, I can't boot my system even into init mode 3. I am able to boot into the init mode 1 and can see that many of the packages have been upgraded to fc15. I tried to start the x server from init mode 1. My nVidia screen even popped up. But after that the screen went totally blanked.

I attempted to install Catalyst 10.11 for my ATI HD 2600XT and the system now only displays lines and a large block of pixels where the mouse would go. CTRL-ALT-F1 kills the system and does not provide a command prompt. This is a single installation, not dual-boot, but there is no Press Esc to access the Grub menu during startup so I cannot choose safe mode. I attempted to get into Recovery mode using the flash drive that I used to install the system and it tells me there is no Recovery kernel (I used the 64-bit Desktop installer, not alternative). Does anyone know an alternative to get into the Grub menu other than ESC during bootup? Alternatively, do I need to download the 64-bit Alternative ISO and create a new boot disk with it so I can access Recovery mode? Is there something else I'm not thinking of?

After a kernel update action, it seems that I'm unable to boot a system anymore. First off, after installing the kernel, and trying to shutdown to boot to the new kernel, the system replied with INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel. Kernel update was performed from to the following versions 2.6.18-128.el5.img -> 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5.img . The system is a VMWare virtual machine. When trying to reboot, the system passes GRUB, starts initializing and after loading the dm it stops for a few seconds at the message Waiting for new devices, show the following message:
Setting up new root fs no fstab.sys, mounting internal defaults. After this and a few other messages, it displays : INIT: version 2.85 booting INIT - No more processes left in this runlevel INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast : disabled for 5 minutes And then it just hangs. This is the output of my inittab:
[code]...
The system boots into failsafe, but still shows the errors mentioned.

I have a jpeg file on my Windows system that won't delete. However, when I try to boot into safe mode to delete it, I can not get into the menu to select "Safe Mode". F8 just boots me right into Ubuntu.I have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 on an Acer Aspire 5520.

While I was using my computer a few days ago, the terminal stopped working properly, so I tried to reboot, and when it started up again it wouldn't boot and said "no init found. try passing init=bootarg"
This has happened twice before, so I really need to figure out what keeps happening, otherwise I can't continue to use linux. i reinstalled both times before. i think that this is caused by a process that prevents me from using the hard drive, because when I try to check the disk in the terminal or in gparted, it says Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/sda1. Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program?
Also, in the disk utility, in the lower right corner of the filesystem it has a spinning "loading wheel".(i'm not sure if that means anything)
I am using ubuntu 10.10, but am not sure what kernel I am using, but i tried a few different kernel options(there's three of them at start up). safe mode does not work either.

I have a debian system that's freezing in the boot sequence at "Setting system clock".Several sites I looked at recommended changing the init scripts to disallow hardware access to the clock. But, I can't boot! Is there a parameter I can pass to the kernel at boot so that it will skip init scripts?

I tried to install Ubuntu 11.04 on my 3 TB hard drive but UEFI firmware can't boot that Linux partition anywhere and went Windows 7 instead. Does anyone have any solutions for UEFI booting? I think EFI filesystem is messed up or bug in installer. Earlier I was able install and boot linux partition with both linux distros (Ubuntu and Fedora) before I removed them for re-install them later and created additional NTFS partition until now.
However, I was only able boot Ubuntu 11.04 from USB stick in UEFI mode. I will continue to use live USB until all solutions are solved. UPDATE: I made a data backup on one of NTFS partitions and removed it. I tried to install Ubuntu 11.04 below 1 TB disk space but still can't boot it.
My system configuration is:
ASUS Maximus IV motherboard
Intel i7-2600K processor
8 GB memory modules
Hitachi 3 TB hard drive
MSI HD 6870 Hawk video card

I am trying to view the startup programs of init whenever I boot up, but don't know how to edit /etc/inittab file. I am running Fedora FC13 and my runlevel is 3. I have the following in my inittab file:

# the system in a certain run-level.

Well, just as the title of this post says, I am having keyboard and mouse problems. Here's the storyMy friend Cody wanted me to take a look at his computer for him (I'm sort of known as a Linux nerd in my school lol) because his keyboard and mouse do not at all work in init 4 mode. I've tried reconfiguring the keyboard and mouse by trying a different module. I've even tried reconfiguring X alltogether by running "X -configure", which didn't work

The problem is that the os will work fine when booted from CD in fail safe mode and can be installed from there but when out of fail safe mode the system begins to boot but freezes and will do nothing more.

Environment: A 32-bit kernel RHEL5.3 system running on a virtual machine. The root(/) filesystem is on an LV.
Issue: Unable to resize the FS after extending the root LV since it is mounted. After extending the LV, online resizing of the FS was not supported and the root filesystem could not be unmounted while it was in use. On rebooting, I got a kernel panic error. In runlevel 1, I couldn't run chroot, couldn't find the /etc/fstab, root FS could not be mounted, fsck did not run (tried block 31 for second copy of superblock using dd count=1 bs=4k skip=31 seek=1 if=/dev/sda2 of=/dev/sda2), couldn't find any rpm on installation media to install unix-utils rpm. On running commands in runlevel 1,
I got the following output.

I just want to run fsck on my hard disk and make sure all is well.
Does fsck provide and logs or records of what it found?
Is it possible to run fsck without LiveCD?
