Fedora :: Xorg Extensions Initialized Versus Enabled

May 17, 2010

In Xorg.0.log, if you have an extension disabled in the configuration file, you will see: (**) Extension DAMAGE disabled In the first few lines ... however, later on you see (II) Initializing built-in extension DAMAGE So which is it? Is there a memory map or something I can dump and view to see which extensions are actually loaded into the X server? Is there a delineation between "disabled/enabled" and "initialized"? OK I found it:

xdpyinfo -queryExtensions | awk '{print; if (NF<=1) exit;}'

Ubuntu Networking :: Error When Compiling Orinoco-0.15rc4.tar.gz - Wireless Extensions Are Not Enabled

Dec 26, 2010

currently running karmic on an old gateway laptop with kernel 2.6.31-22-generic and, as is par for how I handle challenges, I've jumped in with both feet - which is to say this is not a dual-boot situation. I've spent some time reading the forums (and other sources of information) and am grateful for all the knowledgeable people who are willing to share what they know.

My operating system seems to be functioning properly.I can get online via ethernet, but not via wireless. I have a lucent orinoco gold PC24E-H-FC (PCMCIA) card, which the computer isn't seeing. I am trying to follow the instructions here: [URL] to install the driver. Everything is going well until I get to the sudo make line. At that point I get the following display:

make -C /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.31-22-generic M=/usr/src/orinoco-0.15rc4 KERNELRELEASE= modules
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.31-22-generic'
/usr/src/orinoco-0.15rc4/Kbuild:8: *** Wireless extensions are not enabled. Stop.

[code]....

how I can fix it so I can continue on with the instructions. (For the record - if I just continue on, I can change directory in the next line, but I cannot remove either hermes or orinoco as "no such file or directory" seems to exist.)

Debian Configuration :: DDC Versus Xorg.conf

Jan 18, 2011

I'm trying to get the latest Lenny running on some old hardware (a Winterm 3150se). Everything is working just fine except for two things.

When Gnome starts, it comes up at 1600x1200 resolution, which is too high for my monitor. It shows a portion of the right side of the display, If I select Screen Resolution, it gives me a few standard choices, but if I pick one, it acts like it's trying to honor my request, then comes back as 1600x1200 again.

My xorg.conf file had no references to Modeline, so I added a 1024x768 Modeline, not really understanding where the selection I was given was coming from. Anyway, it didn't help.

I can see in the log file that right after the entry about using xorg.conf, it says 'Module "ddc" already built-in', which must have something to do with it?

My hardware supports all the usual video formats, at least it does when it's running WinCE. Is there a way to force the use of xorg.conf or can someone tell me why DDC is acting like it's "read only"? Is DDC a file somewhere?

My other problem is that the Winterm refuses to not try to boot from the flash memory thumbdrive even though it's formatted as a non-bootable device - it's my SSDisk. I have to boot without the drive in, then slip in in just as the boot process exits the blue start screen. I can live with this problem, since it might be dumb hardware.

Fedora Installation :: Disk Needs To Be Initialized On V13 Install?

Jun 15, 2010

I am trying to upgrade from version 11 to v13. I have tried using preinstall as well as 2 live CDs (gnome and KDE). In all cases, I get a message saying that the HD which contains FC11 needs to be reinitialized.
My most recent attempt was to upgrade using the preinstall. Upon reboot, Grub still shows the old (v11) and I can boot that with no problem. If I choose the upgrade option, it fails!

Failure message: Error processing drive /dev/sdc
Hitachi HDT 72101 (1TB)
The device may have to be reinitialized
device details: pci-0000:00:1f.2-scsi-1:0:1:0

The drive (sdc) contains several other flavors of Linux and they all run fine. FC11 also runs from that drive with no problem.

Fedora :: Can't Log In After Installing Gnome 3 Extensions

I installed Fedora 15, fresh install, today. Then I installed several Gnome Shell extensions along with Gnome Do through the package manager. I logged out, and tried logging back in. Received the Gnome Shell error message, "Fatal error" and was told to try again. Get taken back to login window.

I tried logging in as "root" so I could uninstall the packages I installed, but apparently you can't do that in Fedora. What's the best course of action?

Fedora Hardware :: No Wireless Extensions - System Impracticable To Use

A friend of mine have just migrated to Linux, and as recommended by me, He's trying Fedora 15 KDE. Everything runs just fine, he loved the OS, but there's a sad problem, his network card seems to have no "wireless extensions", which makes the system impracticable to use. I've tried searching around which card JMC250 is a single-chip PCI-Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller

with lspci
and which driver for this card
JME
is installed, with modprobe list

I've tried loading this driver with modprobe jme, no errors. And I've also tried compiling a driver I got from the manufacturer. No changes.

Fedora :: Gnome Versus KDE Applications

May 31, 2010

I installed Fedora 13 and use the Gnome desktop. I want to keep my installation as clean as possible and have heard some contrary advice about installing both Gnome and KDE desktops, so I want to stay with just Gnome. In the past I have mixed both and feel that resulted in tons of packages that I probably didn't need and tons of updates all the time. However, some applications seem to be KDE applications and installing them requires installation of many KDE packages. This is a source of confusion for me:

Is there a distinction between Gnome applications and KDE applications? If so, how do you tell the difference? Should one NOT install KDE applications if you are using the Gnome desktop and not interested in installing KDE desktop? Is there a best practice on how to approach which software to install so that you do not create a mix and match mess?

Fedora :: FDISK Discrepancies - FC12 Versus FC14

Nov 28, 2010

I was recently messing around with the partitions on my tri-boot system and ultimately messed everything up. After a few hours of tinkering I was able to recover but learned something interesting in the process.Something has changed with FDISK, or some underlying component, from FC12 to FC14. I keep partition backups so when I mess things up, I restore using dd. Anyway I think I was restoring partitions at the wrong starting blocks as some partitions worked while others did not. I just happened to notice the start for sda1 on FC14 and said to myself, that's not right.

Anyway take a look as the 'fdisk -l /dev/sda' for FC12 and FC14. What gives? My backups were all made on an FC12 install and when I restored from an FC12 boot CD all is well. Anyone know what the deal is? Should I recreate all my backups again using FC14? Not sure how the boot sector is affected with this FC14 sda1 start at 64.

HTML Code:

*** FC12 x64
Disk /dev/sda: 640.1 GB, 640135028736 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 77825 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Fedora Installation :: DRPMs Versus RPMs With Multiple Machines

Mar 10, 2010

I have a home network with 6+ x86_64 machines, all with similar setups. In the past (FC10 and before), I've had common package repositories (e.g /var/cache/yum/fedora/packages) shared via NFS with all the machines (and with keepcache=1 in /etc/yum.conf). That way, a given RPM only got downloaded once; the other machines would then pull it from my local package repository. And I don't mind the disk usage of keeping one copy of all my old RPMS around.

It seems that while DRPMS is great for a single machine, it doesn't make sense in my case. If I have to download the DRPM 6 times (and take the time/CPU hit to recreate the RPM 6 times), I might as well have downloaded the RPM once and been done with it. Is there a not-too-convoluted method to keep a common package repository across multiple machines even with DRPMS? Or, better, to have that first downloading machine pull a DRPM, generate the RPM, then save the RPM in the local shared repository?

Programming :: Different Initialized Environments For Shells Vs Emacs?

Aug 7, 2010

I'm finalizing the the dual-boot addition that I recently completed. I've added lubuntu to the LT3114u Netbook that I use. That's done, now I'm migrating my user environment back from the Cygwin one that I've been using on Windoze, as of late. One of features that's been useful has been the global environment management possible with the windoze UI functions. As I coded my emacs environment while 'over there' (windoze side), I included a check for the lisp library repository path environment variable EMACSLOADPATH. It is globally available when one logs in, and does not get set in any user scripts, or dot files any to do with CYGWIN or emacs.

While it has been easy enough to set EMACSLOADPATH for the login shell environment, via .bashrc, .profile, and system wide via /etc/profile, I have not been able to have '/usr/bin/emacs23' have EMACSLOADPATH set when invoked via the LXDE UI. Thus, it would appear that emacs is not being initialized with the same environment that any of the shells are (old school?). Thus, what is it that one must update in order to have GNU emacs initialized with the same environment variables as bash? Or, put another way, why aren't the environment variable defined in /etc/profile, ~/.bashrc and/or ~/.profile ending up in the initialized environment upon invocation of emacs23 on lubuntu Linux?
