Ubuntu Multimedia :: Does Ipod Need To Be 'initialized' In Itunes?
Jan 6, 2010
I have a new 16GB nano ipod, and I "initialized" it in Rhythmbox. I added about 6GB of music into it (via Rhythmbox). When I eject and disconnect the ipod, it tells me that 6GB are occupied, but the music directory says that it's empty. Does the ipod need to be "initialized" in itunes? I have another ipod that was first used in itunes and it never gave me any issues with Rhythmbox.I have two machines running Ubuntu 9.10. I can't get itunes working with wine, and I don't have a mac or a windows machine.

I just got the new Ipod Touch 4, and I have somehow connect it to the Itunes for the first time, and I'm trying to do it under Ubuntu... Does anyone know a way to do it? I tried installing Itunes 7.6 and it worked fine with Crossover Linux, but I guess it won't recognize as it's a old version of Itunes.

I've had Wine issues from the start. iTunes barely worked as a player, couldn't get it to put anything on my iPod. Now AIM doesn't work at all. It starts to come up then has "Internal errors - invalid parameters received" and is forced to close.?
I know there are other IM programs that run in Linux, I'm currently using Pidgin and I like it, it's just you can't do some of the AIM things like Audio chat { I know it's coming eventually } or image share where both IMers can see the image and not have to do a file transfer. I'd just like to be able to run AIM via Wine.

I have just installed F14.I installed Wine and iTunesSetup.exe.When I installed iTunes it said it couldn't import or burn cds.It also said that maybe playback could be a problem.None of this is an issue for me as I only want to use it to load my ipod. When I plug in my ipod it doesnt show up in the left hand menu bar as I'm told it should. How do I load my ipod?---------- Post added at 05:53 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:54 PM ----------After installing the 293 updates available to F14 I found that an ipod icon appeared on my desktop. Can I just copy mp3 files to here. There are a few folders, where would I copy them to?It would be good if I could transfer files without Wine. Lately I've been alergic to all things Microsoft.---------- Post added at 06:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:53 PM ---------- iTunes wont even start up from the desktop icon

I have recently bough a 2GB iPod Shuffle 3rd Generation. I have loaded music into it via rhythmbox, and I can listen to it in the computer. The problem is that, when I unplug the iPod it tells me to "Please use iTunes to sync music". The music IS IN the iPod, I don't know what's happening.

I am trying to connect my 2nd Gen Ipod to Xubuntu and import my music collection onto the Ipod. I am having real problems with this. Rhythm Box does not recognise the Ipod with the plug-in, I have tried Amarok, but each time I tried to open it, it just crashed, tried sending a bug report but that did not want to work. I have also tried Exaile with the Ipod plug-in but when you go to the device manager you can click on the Ipod but nothing happens. I have tried looking at the Exaile forums but this seems to be a problem for others as well. The Ipod mounts ok, now a bit stuck.

Its a dell e510 with about a gig of ram. I'm struggling to get my ipod touch working with the gtkpod ipod manager. At this point my ipod shows on my desktop when i connect it via usb. I cannot set up the repository for it in gtkpod because i dont know the location its mounting to. if its mounting at all. so my question is. how can i tell where my ipod is being mounted? I dont have a clue what to look for in the terminal results for "df -a"
But this is what i get:
Code:
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 152357444 65577992 79040140 46% /
proc 0 0 0 - /proc
none 0 0 0 - /sys
[Code]...
Edit : Itouch = first generation 8gb Edit 2: I would like to create a sticky thread that helps new users answer questions about ipods. Will a moderator please let me know what i should include in their opinion? ex. using wine to run itunes, gtkpod and how to set it up, using mm players like banshee and songbird... what version of ubuntu works best with the ipods.

I'm not too experienced on Ubuntu, but I'm trying to get a Delta 1010LT working on Ubuntu 10.04 minimal install (no gnome, only console).I can see the board detected using lspci, but looking at dmesg output I get the following:
Code:
[ 31.116668] ICE1712 0000:05:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 21 (level, low) -> IRQ 21
[ 31.116709] ice1712: Using board model M Audio Delta 1010LT
[ 31.135560] invalid CS8427 signature 0x0: let me try again...
[code].....
if a change the model to delta1010 the driver is loaded correctly, but I assume there are major differences between the two boards so I don't get audio out, even if I unmute everything using alsamixer.Motherboard is an Intel D510MO with onboard audio disabled.

I'm looking for the best iTunes alternative that has almost these features:
- being able to edit the track's name/album (songs in the iPod)
- adjusting volume of tracks
I'm currently using Rhythmbox. I have tried Exaile and Amarok just doesn't work for me. I can't recall what made me turn away from Banshee, too. I'm not really into Wine so installing iTunes itself is not viable.

I have ubuntu on my laptop, i haven't updated it to 10.4 yet but i've only had it on here for a couple weeks. Anyways, i plugged my ipod into the computer and had it working with rhythmbox just fine. However, when i unplugged my ipod, i looked at it and there are no songs, absolutely nothing. When i plug it back in, it shows on rhythmbox that i have all my songs back...but the second i take it out there are no songs. I don't know what this problem is, but basically i just want itunes back :[ I guess theres something about getting a virtual machine to be able to run itunes with? that sounds nice...but is it super complicated?

I just got a new iphone (yay me) but later realised that as I have Ubuntu, it is very difficult to get itunes installed on it.
Having said that, I've got Wine installed and attempted to download itunes 7.something and even though the whole process worked, it appears that when I try to access itunes the whole screen goes black and then if I scroll across the screen with my mouse it lights up various bits of what's behind the black screen and then after a while it tells me that it cannot access itunes at all...
So I thought, perhaps I should uninstall itunes, but in doing that it still appeared in my wine folder, so I uninstalled wine, which still appeared in my Applications list, so I edited my applications list and then tried to re-install wine from scratch (I know I sound dumb already - but I was desperate ok!!!). So now wine is installed on my computer somewhere but it now doesn't show up in my Applications list at all and I can't seem to get it back on there - any suggestions there would also help...
But my main objective is to try and uninstall itunes properly (maybe from the terminal window - but I don't know how to even do that) and attempt to re-install it to see if it works again.
I need to do this in order to sync my iphone. Cannot seem to do it with Amarok as I don't have Installer.Apps on my iphone, and cannot get THAT without syncing it with itunes to begin with....

I was using the gnome-shell for a little bit to get accustomed to the coming change in march but I removed it. Shortly after, I decided to update my wine, and get the lastest itunes.exe. I save the exe, allowed executing permissions and ran the install. IT WORKED. I did not allow it to be my default player, and I did not allow autorun. whenever i open it says installation error but I hit ok and I am graced with itunes. I still can sync my iphone with it, I guess it can't recognize it.
occasional crashes when I get click happy but playback works most of the time. some times i have to logout in order to try it again. authorized itunes purchases work thru it.

What in your opinions are the best iTunes alternatives?
I plan on getting an iPod touch soon, and need to be able to...
-Change settings (maybe)
-Sync Music
-Sync Games (IMPORTANT)
-Sync Movies
-Be able to categorize videos into TV shows or movies and by season.
If there isnt something that cant do all of that, getting itunes 10 to work on Wine/PlayonLinux, Because it installs, but just looks very messed up when I open it.

I downloaded iTunes and am successfully running it though Wine. However, whenever I try to "Authorize Computer" or go to the iTunes store, iTunes won't connect to my network. I know it is not a network issue because I can surf Chrome at the same time iTunes says it can't connect. Is this fixable or is it not possible to "Authorize Computer"?

I cant seem to get iTunes to work no matter what I try, I installed WINE and various versions of iTunes, depending on what the guide that im following tells me to do. I usually get most of the way through and then something that i'm suppose to put into the terminal doesn't work. Itunes sometimes freezes the computer when i try and use it, and sometimes it gets to the point where it says something about not being able to work because qucktime wont work and i have to reinstall itunes, which i try to do, which does nothing.
I have a computer with a 64 bit processor, and an ipod touch. I am willing to go to whichever version of Ubuntu that works best with whichever version of itunes, i don't have anything important saved so going to a different version of the OS isn't a big deal. I have to have itunes because I have to back up my music onto something.
So, which version of Ubuntu is best with itunes (i have ubuntu 9.10) and has anyone used a guide that is proven to work recently? If their easer method of getting my music onto my computer, im open to that as well.

I got the XP 32 bit newest version of iTunes from the iTunes website. I got the newest version of Wine from the Ubuntu Software Center. I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10
So when I install iTunes it seems to work because it goes through the whole install process. But when I click the iTunes icon to launch it I Get a little box with this error message:
Apple Application Support was not found
Apple Application Support is required to run iTunes. Please uninstall iTunes, then install iTunes again.
Error 2 (Windows error 2)
So what can I do to fix this? I already uninstalled then re installed iTunes like the message says to do but I still keep getting the same error.

This isn't really an Ubuntu-specific question, I suppose, but I'd like to take the music (or at least the un-DRMed bits) out of my iTunes library and put them in RhythmBox on Ubuntu Lucid, and I'd like to do the same with my iPhoto library and possibly F-Spot, though I haven't decided. The potential pitfall is I don't think iPhoto or iTunes actually stores the information about each photo and music track in the file itself, but in an XML file somewhere else in the folder Are there utilities that can translate the iTunes and iPhoto libraries into something that I might be able to import into another program?
