Fedora :: Where's Free "Desktop Panel" - Recreate?
Jan 26, 2010
I've done three Fedora 12 installs recently. Two were from the complete DVD. generic and KDE versions. In both cases, KDE desktop was by default graced with nice translucent panel where the icons for Firefox & etc. could frolic and play and exhibit single-click behavior. The third system started out as a Vista laptop that got a rootkit. Booted to a Live CD, backed up my data, did an install. It took a bit to get all the required KDE packages installed, but even so I didn't get that desktop panel. I found the "add panel" control, and I can add widgets to it, but I can't figure out how to recreate that desktop panel.

way to recreate /boot partition for Fedora 13.
For some reason my system crash yesterday and I had to power down the machine (the only bit of information I still remember it mentioned CPU2 stop for few seconds). The next day my system only shows grub console. I tried to mount the partition but failed. here's what i tried
Code:
# mount -t ext4 /dev/dm-1 /mnt/oldboot
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/mapper/XXXXXX,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try

So I just updated my IdeaPad to Natty and played around with Unity. The performane was absolutely unbearable so I installed Unity2D from the software center. Now when I start the session everything seems to be fine at first. Whenever I move the mouse over the panel though it seems to switch to my old gnome-panel from the "Classic" session (with some missing icons). When I move the mouse over that panel again it switches back to the Unity panel style. What is going on? Can I fix this somehow? I will have to use the classic session until I get a working consistent behavior

Although I am new to Fedora/Linux I hope to contribute to the community once I'm on my feet with the OS.I am trying to update the graphics driver (Intel), so I downloaded the file, realized I needed to update libdrm, downloaded that, too, and am now on the step of installing libdrm 2.4.23.I am at the step of typing 'make install' on the command line, and get this error message:libtool: Version mismatch eror. This is libtool 2.2.6b Debian Debian-2.2.6b-2, but the definition of this LT_INIT comes from libtool 2.2.10. You should recreate aclocal.m4 with macros from libtool 2.2.6b Debian-2.2.6b-2 and run autoconf again. It appears that I have a newer version of libtools than is needed. How do I recreate aclocal.m4 with macros from an older libtool version, specifically 2.2.6b Debian-2.2.6b-2? Or is the problem with LT_INIT?

On FC14/gnome I created a panel on the bottom of the desktop. After reboot the panel shows up on the top of the desktop. The panel cannot be moved to the bottom. Can go into panel "properties" and under "Orientation" selecting "Bottom" but after a second the botton switches back to "Top" without moving the panel.
The workaround was to create a new panel on the bottom, set it up, then delete the old panel from the top. When the machine is rebooted the panel goes back to the top. Seems like a basic gnome panel bug.

This morning I update two packages:
Packages Altered:
Updated less-436-6.fc13.i686
Update 436-8.fc13.i686
Updated mingetty-1.08-4.fc12.i686
Update 1.08-6.fc13.i686
I can't explain how, but my desktop panel went blank, and is overloading the system to the point that I cant run other applications. I was able to run a Term session and confirm that the gnome-panel ps is using more than 65% of the cpu and 3.5 on RAM. I create a temp user to verify that is a user environment problem.

I'm using Fedora 15 in fallback mode.
Is it possible to remove the desktop switcher applet from the bottom panel? Or autohide or even delete a panel? That is, is there software I can install to do these things in Gnome 3?

Is there a way to remove the Computer, Trash, and Home folder from the desktop and have them just in the panel? I like a clean desktop with no icons, and would like to use the top panel as a "dock" of sorts.

I'm frequently running out of disk space and would like to add a notification as to how much disk space I have to the panel. All I need is basically a little area, stating 1.5GB or 375.5MB on one of the panels.

After a fresh install of Fedora 12 I'm delivered to the image on the attachment. Well aside from not being able to see icons on the left, or go to the any terminal and not seeing anything and be forced to blind type and hope for the best there are some other issues. Enabling panel transparency shows video artefacts on the panel.nouveau doesn't enable 3D(I use a NVidia GeForce 9600 GT 512MB and my monitor is a ACER LCD X223W)) kind and point me to resources about the nouveau driver and how to configure it so it starts to work?

How do I recreate an LVM raid 1 partition, without destroying data on the discs? I have a 650GB data partition which is a raid 1 array with ext3. Two days ago, the system (Ubuntu 9.04) started to refuse to write to it, claiming no space left on device - even if there is ca. 102GB free left, if the disk is 85% full (according to df)! Interestingly, removing a couple of GB did not help, after reboot the disk was again full..
I did the "tune2fs -m 0" trick and then forced file check on next reboot by "sudo touch /forcefsck" .. and the result is that the raid partition is gone. I have the two physical drives /dev/sd*, unmounted, but the /dev/md1 is no longer there. What can I do to re-create it, without losing the data? I realized that I ran tune2fs on the physical partitions /dev/sd* - was I supposed to run it on /dev/md1?

I reformatted a ntfs drive to fat32, meaning to only reformat one partition on the drive. Because the partition table is overwritten I cannot simply restore the old partition table. Any thoughts on tools that I can use to manually re-create the partitions and save the data?

I rebuilt a server and am now trying to recover my large data arrays. The server was ubuntu 10.04lts before. I decided to rebuild it with CentOS simply because I am more familiar with it. I had 2 raid-5 arrays on the old server:4 x 1tb -> md0 5 x 2tb -> md1 The newly built server does not know about these arrays yet. How can I reassemble the arrays without loosing my data? I know the data can still be accessed because booting the server with a live-cd mounts and shows the arrays just fine. Should I boot with a live cd and copy the mdadm config file?

One of our servers crashed due to hard drive problems. We were able restore data from backups; however the only info on the samba PDC portion of the server we have are the local and domain SIDs. Armed with only this info; is there a way to recreate the previous domain so the users and machine accounts could recognize it?

I am running Open Suse 11.2 and did an update this weekend to get the latest patches and after a required reboot I no longer have a desktop panel or access to the computer menus, etc. I get to a login screen and I can see the panel at that point, but after I login I just get a desktop background. I can see the system is booting up and the "connect to wireless network succesful" comes up too, I just can't see the desktop panel. Anything I can try to get it back?I am running this on an IBM T42p laptop and the xgl graphics are sweet but seems to have stopped as well.

I recently made the switch to Ubuntu 10.10 desktop version, I have been running the OS smoothly for about 2 weeks now. However, when I turned on my laptop this morning my wallpaper is now plain white, my desktop items have disappeared and my top panel has been removed. (I replaced the panel at the bottom of the screen with a docky dock, which appears to be working fine).
