Fedora :: Determine What Packages Depend On PackageKit Components

Mar 10, 2011

I tried to remove PackageKit from F15 the other day and it removed, amongst other things GDM. Kind of hosed and I re-installed. I want to remove two components in particular, the command-not-found one and the software updater, (the old add/remove programs). How do I determine what packages would be removed? I thought there was an option in yum, but it doesn't seem to be in the manual.

Fedora Installation :: Program Freezes After Loading Components / Mounting Partitions

Dec 29, 2009

I am trying to install Fedora 12 x64 on my 27" iMac 10,1. I have tried both the installation dvd and the gnome live cd (both x64 i did not try the x86). On the installation dvd I get as far as the menu giving me the boot/install options - I have tried to install both with a basic video driver and the regular install/upgrade option - both times it begins loading components for the installer program (/sbin/loader) etc. After it loads sbin/loader and mounts the partitions it freezes with half the screen being the terminal txt beforehand and the other half being just a standard fedora logo w/blue background. It is not much different when I try the live-cd the only different is it does the exact same thing when the timer for automatic login is done. Any possible command line arguments that I could use to stop the graphical corruption?

The Plasma Netbook Workspaces is alright, but I ended up returning to base KDE instead.

Ubuntu Installation :: Setup Default Boots To Main HDD With Windows 7

Mar 18, 2010

How can I set up my pc where it default boots to my main HDD with Windows 7, and a secondary HDD with ubuntu after pressing F12 or something? I was going to just do a dual boot, but I remembered I had this extra HDD sitting around (which I was 'borrowing' from walmart for something I can't remember and lost the receipt =s) so I figured I'd just install ubuntu to it and dual boot like that.

EDIT: Disregard that. Just installed Ubuntu to my second HDD and it booted to the grub loader, which had the Windows 7 option in it. However, I do have one more question: as I'm still using the Windows 7 RC (which expires pretty soon), will a clean install of Windows 7 overwrite the grub loader seen on startup? If so, how do I go about booting back into the second HDD to reinstall grub?

Fedora :: Knoppix Can't Access Main Partition?

Feb 28, 2010

I would like to try to install the nvidia drivers on my F12 box.fter two failed attempts, one of which required me to completely wipe F12 and reinstall (i.e. right royal pain), I would like to be more careful for the next attempt. The problem is that if I try to upgrade to nvidia drivers, and they don't work, I need a way of backing the installation. But, if the driver upgrade fails, then the OS won't boot. I tried going in with a Knoppix live DVD, but it could only access Fedora's /boot partition, not the main OS mounted on /. Therefore, I couldn't change undo the selection of the nvidia driver and back out.The output of mount is:

Code:
# mount
/dev/mapper/vg_machine-lv_root on / type ext4 (rw)

Fedora :: Postfix 2.7.0 Ignoring Main.cf Params

Aug 31, 2010

I've recently upgraded my home server from fc5 to fc13 which means installing the latest version of postfix (identified as 2.7.0 in the maillog). It is used to send mail from cron jobs and logwatch to a local mailbox (aliased) and my googlemail account so I can monitor when away from home. I finally got it working, but had to pull a trick that I feel bad about--it feels very hacky, and does not survive a reboot. The problem is no matter what I do, this version of Postfix ignores the settings for "masquerade_domains", "myhostname" and "mydomain" in main.cf, using instead whatever 127.0.0.1 (or :::1) is set to in /etc/hosts!!

To send mail to Internet locations, the "from" needs to be a valid domain. In an earlier version of Postfix (2.6.x) I just fudged this to a domain I own (that is parked) in main.cf using "masquerade_domains". Now I have to insert it in /etc/hosts instead of "localhost". I can't find anyone on the web who seems to be having this problem. Postfix is definitely reading main.cf as it is obviously picking up other setings such as debug_peer_level and proxy_interfaces.

As I said, it works, but I don't like my solution and /etc/hosts gets rewritten to ":::1 localhost6.localdomain6" when the system is rebooted, meaning I have to edit it to get Postfix working again as sendmail rejects "localhost6.localdomain6" as not found:

General :: Want To Build Desktop Computer With New Components?

Apr 25, 2010

I want to build a desktop computer. I will be running Linux Mint on it, probably the LXDE community edition. I use it for school (homework and studying), research on the net (general browsing and specific research on Linux stuff since I hope to one day open my own Linux computer store), and for listening to music and watching videos, things like that. I am not a power user, adn I don't plan to be one any time soon. But I am learning how to work in GNU/Linux, since I want to make a living that way.

Currently, though, I just need a good computer made out of new components, that will work correctly. So What kinds of components to get. I need a motherboard, a CPU (I prefer AMD), a hard drive (I will run SATA), and RAM. I have a DVD burner on my current computer, and I can use that in my new system. I plan to put my new computer together in the tower my current computer is using. I am just looking for some knowledgeable suggestions here for what to get to run my computer the best.

Fedora :: Change Gnome 'Main Menu' Icon?

Jun 13, 2009

The Gnome desktop environment in Fedora permits a range of themes to be used, including icon sets. Some themes will include an icon for the Gnome Main Menu that you may or may not like including the default Fedora "infinity" Main Menu icon. Most launchers, whether on the desktop or on a Gnome panel, will permit you to change the individual icon. The Gnome Main Menu offers no such facility. Whereas there have been several challenging methods suggested to change that icon on a system-wide basis, there is an easy and straightforward way to do it on a user account basis.

Note: the method described herein applies only to the single Main Menu icon usually added to a Gnome panel in place of the custom Menu Bar that Fedora creates by default. This method does not work with the default custom Menu Bar. To add the Main Menu to a Gnome panel, right-click a blank area of a panel and select Add to Panel, then select "Main Menu" from the box that appears. Move the Main Menu icon to your desired location by right-clicking it and selecting Move. Remove the original custom Menu Bar by right-clicking it and selecting Remove From Panel.Install Gnome Configuration EditorInstall the Gnome configuration editor program using either System > Administration > Add/Remove Software or the command line (as root):

Code:
yum install gconf-editor
With this program installed, each user can tweak the Gnome desktop to the extent that the
