Fedora :: Use The SSH Tunnel Option In Vinagre?
Jun 13, 2011
I've set up a machine with VNC through SSH. And it works just great when I first create the tunnel using:Quote:ssh -L 5902:10.0.0.250:5902 jk@10.0.0.250and then open localhost::5902 in vinagre (if I input localhost:2 it auto chnges to localhost::5902 for some reason).I would however like to have one less window (gnome-terminal) open and use the "Use host _ as SSH tunnel" in vinagre. But for the life of me I can't get it to work. Anyone here that can help me figure out what to input in vinagre to get it to work (without having gnome-terminal open in the background) ?

I have just completed a rebuild of my desktop PC Ubuntu install - switched from Lucid 64 bit to Lucid 32 bit. I connected to another PC with Vinagre (remote desktop viewer) and allowed it to save the connection as some name it created. Later after I noticed this I created a bookmark to the same PC with a name which I wanted. Now I cannot delete the original bookmark.
I have read about some bugs re. dealing with bookmarks in Vinagre. However, I have found no work arounds. Here is what I have tried:
1 - I did a complete uninstall of Vinagre and reinstalled
2 - Deleted .recently-used.xbel
The Vinagre bookmarks remained. Can someone tell me where Vinagre bookmarks are stored and perhaps how to delete one? If I cannot remove a single one I will zap all by brute force. Yes, I have everything backed up.

I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 on a home server. I can connect to it using vinagre from another computer just fine. However, if I restart the server I can no longer vnc to it because I need to log in (start a gnome session). Is there a way to do this using just vinagre? Do I need to install another vnc server on my home server? The problem is that I don't want to carry a monitor from another room just so I can log in and start a gdm session if the home server gets restarted.

I'm playing around with trying to access a Fedora 13 system from a Ubuntu 10.04 system. Both are relatively new vanilla installations.I went into System - Preferences - Remote Desktop on the Fedora system and enabled Remote Desktop. When I connect with the Ubuntu system (ssh), I can login, but all I see is an ssh terminal session. I was expecting the desktop environment (GNOME right?) to come up.

I've set up a low cost box with Ubuntu Lucid Lynx at home behind a router, and managed to get remote access running. My goal is to be able to host a small website and work on it remotely, so I isntalled ftp (vsftpd). When I tried to edit the vsftpd.conf file in Vinagre from work, I could only open it read-only, no surprise. When I tried 'sudo gedit' or 'sudo gedit /etc/vsftpd.conf' from terminal in Vinagre, I received the prompt for the password to elevate privileges (again, expected); however, after I hit Enter, nothing happens. I've tried a bunch of different things, but I can't get it to work. I can stop & start my ftp service with 'sudo service vsftpd stop/start' and it seems to work fine.

When trying to connect to another Ubuntu machine running remote desktop using vinagre, I get a black screen on the client machine. Annoyed, I went upstairs to check the host machine, and it is waiting for me to authenticate my keyring. Why would the host need to authenticate for me to access it remotely?

I have a headless server, running Fedora 13. I want to make a ssh tunnel to that server from laptop that is also running Fedora 13. Logging into that server over ssh works well, X11 forwarding also works, but I can't establish a ssh tunnel.
At the moment I was trying to connect two small python tcp sample programs, that communicate through port 8000. Running them both on my laptop works well.
What I am trying to do is that I am making two seperate ssh connections to my server, let's say it's address is myserver.com.
1) I make a 'standard' ssh connection to it
Code:
And run the server program
2) I open another terminal window and make the tunnel
Code:
3) I open 3rd terminal window and try to run the client program, that is trying to connect to localhost:8000.
If I understand it correctly, the client should now connect to localhost:8000, ssh would discover that and send that data to myserver.com port 8000. Then the server program on myserver.com is listening on that port and should get that data and send "hello world" string back to the client. Then the client should get that, print it to stdout and exit.
Unfortunatly all what it does is that it just hangs for about ten seconds and then says "connection lost" (timeout?)
I have tried other programs, they also timout.
By passing the -v argument to ssh it outputs:
Code:
When I try to connect the client it prints four more lines:
Code:
So as you see, it says that the connection times out..Also can anybody tell what the "Unspecified GSS failure." means? The possible break in attempt is caused by connecting to the server using the myserver.com address while being in the same local network with the server. If I connect using server's local ip address (ie. 192.168.1.xxx), the message dissappears.

I'm trying to set up an ssh tunnel so that I can use an internal dev apache server inside a network. The machine is at 192.168.0.10. If I'm ON the machine and type "http://localhost:80" the Apache test page serves up fine. If I'm inside the network and type: "http://192.168.0.10:80" the Apache test page serves up fine.
However, if I use the IP address and the following:
ssh -L 8888:192.168.0.10:80 me(at)xxx.yyy.zzz.ip
and then type "http://localhost:8888" I get a blank white page, no errors, and a note
"channel 3: open failed: administratively prohibited" appearing in the Xterm where I've opened the tunnel.
A similar command:
ssh -L 8888:my.ip.at.home:5900 me(at)my.ip.at.home opens up a tunnel just fine, through which I run VNC. I've checked the firewall on the apache server, and it's offering up port 80. I've checked that "PermitTunnel yes" is in the config. The router allows ssh on port 22, both tcp and udp.

I have an sshd server up and running (F13 64bit) I'd like to connect to a pc that's behind a firewall using ssh tunnelling, so I have something like
ssh -R 1234:127.0.0.1:22 myuser@mypc
then from mypc I can succesfully login to the remote pc. I have just une question. How can I list the ssh active connections and the forwarded ports ?
I've only got to
netstat -tunva
but this returns only (filtered)
tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:1234 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
tcp 0 0 ::ffff:172.16.0.XXX:22 ::ffff:172.16.1.XXX:60744 ESTABLISHED
Now I know that the first is the tunnel end but how can I connect the two lines if I don't know the port number (ie: someone else estabilieshes another tunnel)

i have been struggling with setting up a VNC connection between my Ubuntu laptop and my Vista desktop. I am trying to remotely access the Vista desktop using my Ubuntu laptop. I have forwarded port 5900 to my Vista desktop, and attempted connecting to (VistaLocalAddress):5900 using Vinagre. Sadly enough, it instantly returns "Connection Closed."
I have tried setting up some sort of remote access in a similar manner about 3 times in the past, finally i just made a forum account and created this thread in a plea for help.
PS: I forgot to mention that the Vista desktop has allow remote connections ENABLED.

when I go to download 11.3 I am presented with the installation medium for a DVD installation with a button that says download DVD. Should there be an option to download an ISO option for a CD installation on this page along with the DVD version? Some of our older machines can only read CD's with a max size of 500+ megs.

Fedora 15 with Gnome 3 is turning out to be dream for me. I am loving it, except few of the old things are gone. I don't care about the not so important stuff but I do care about the Extract here menu option, that I used to have before. I did checked I have latest unrar installed but still I don't see in Nautilus 3.0.2 context menu Extract Here option to unrar compressed files. So, I have to use the Archive manager which I want to avoid. Other feature I am missing is status bar in desktop (bottom bar) any idea how to get that back on gnome 3.

Installed fc8 about a year ago. Had to use text mode because of nvidia video card, but got everything working fine. Dual boot with separate physical drives. (XP on 250G, sda; fc8 on 80 G, sdb). Now trying to replace fc8 with fc10 and hope it will work just as good (still have to use text installation) . However, I have some specific questions as I go:
#1. When I try to use the upgrade existing system option, I get an error that says: "Error mounting device / dev/VolGroup001/.Log Vol100 as /: mount: Special device /dev/ dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 does not exist." Does this mean I need to do a fresh install of fc10, instead of upgrade?
#2 (Backed up and started fresh install). Made the selection to only re-partition and use the 80G (sdb) drive. (leaving the 250G, sda disk alone)..However, the partition table that produces shows values for the sda (250G)disk partitions that will be somewhat different (maybe not significantly) than those I observed in XP's disk manager tool. (For instance Windows says my ntfs partition is 206GB, yet the partition table in the fc10 installer (text mode) says ntfs partition will be 211GB). Is this normal? A 5GB difference? (This is where I aborted the install).
#3 I just want to replace fc8 with fc10, and have it work just like before. One more thing: If I go ahead with fresh installation of fc10 will it give me the option of leaving Grub as it is? (on sdb1 and chainload to XP?) Am hooked on Fedora, but need my 250G drive just as it is.

I'm completely new to Fedora, though not to Linux (I'm switching from Ubuntu 9.10, now) and am having a few problems getting it installed. I followed the installation instructions, torrented the i386 DVD image, and put it on a 4gb USB drive using UNetbootin.
This is where my problems started. I restarted the computer, figured out which F key I needed to press to select the boot source, and then there wasn't a USB boot option. I've looked all over the place (using Google) and can't find out how to get the BIOS to have a USB option there-- I'm using a Toshiba Satellite A10, and that doesn't come with the USB boot option.
Now I'm trying to either figure out how to add the USB boot option or find another way to install. Burning a DVD (or CDs) doesn't work, as I don't have the resources to do so. I've seen somewhere that there's a way to install from a hard drive partition, but no instructions on how to do so (if someone could point me to a way to do that, it seems to be my best option right now-- if it even exists).

I'm working remotely at the minute, but have several 'incoming' automatic reverse shells connecting to a dedicated server. This dedicated server does not have X, but several of the 'incoming' shell servers do. Basically, take three machines, laptop, server, client. Laptop and client have X, server does not. All three machines have password-less logins to each other (laptop > server, server > client) and can password-lessly establish a shell.
I've tried ssh -X user@server "ssh -X user@client gui-application" and, no suprise, I'm getting 'Cannot open Display" messages. Does anyone know I nice one-liner for this kind of tunnelling?

I'm trying to set up a secure web tunnel at home I have an Ubuntu box (desktop), a Mac, and a Windows 7 box. I use all of them for different reasons. I want to be able to route traffic from my browser through my Ubuntu box. I have done this before with proxy servers abroad, but I want to do it using ssh and my box at home so I don't have to pay for a service i.e (Secure Tunnel)etc.
I followed the instructions at http://bit.ly/hAnp6u. However, using my Win7 box, after I set the browser part per the instructions, I get no connection from the browser.

Is it possible to chain together multiple SSH tunnel hops in a single `ssh -L` command on the client side? I have two gateways I need to get through in order to access a remote host. For a normal SSH client connection, it's simple enough chain this all together by simply appending the additional SSH connection commands to the first one:Code: ssh gateway.1 ssh gateway.2 ssh remote.host.
