Fedora :: Wireless LAN At Runlevel 3/ No Gui

Mar 28, 2010

I boot by default into Runlevel 3 on my F12 Server. If I need GUI apps then I run startx. The server I'm using (eeeBox eb1501) has a wired and a wireless LAN interfaces. I run two networks and want to be able to connect to the wirelss one without having to start Gnome or KDE just to get the WLAN to connect.IS this someting to do with the NetworkManager or just the gnome-keyring?The wired interface comes up at boot but the Wireless one won't until I start the GUI.

General :: Getting A Text Console Runlevel In Kubuntu 10.04 (Changing Runlevel Won't Work)?

Sep 4, 2010

runlevels 2 -5 are identical in Ubuntu. /etc/init/rc-sysinit.conf is used instead of /etc/inittab for changing the runlevel. But there's no point doing that since the runlevels are identical. The default runlevel is 2, so I tried to find some service I could disable in /etc/rc2.d. I didn't find anything I could work with.

OpenSUSE :: Knetwork Manager - Does Runlevel 3 Allow Wireless Connections To Work

Jun 20, 2011

I understand that the K (KDE) network manager is a KDE app but does it actually function in runlevel 3? By that I mean does it allow wireless connections to work? I've been trying to do this but can't. I have a need to while in KDE to sometime init 3 and while in runlevel 3 I need my wireless to work. I havent figured out if Knetwork manager still functions outside of KDE or if I need to just use ifup traditional.

I did search the forum for threads related to knetwork manager and did not see anything related to this so I hope someone can assist me. Also if I do need to use ifup traditional method, is there anything specail I need to do so that it works without issues such as, uninstall knetwork manager or something else? I ask this because my previous attempts at using ifup (by switching to it from YAST) end up making my wireless not work. I can scan and find my network but after entering my creds it doesnt do anything. I managed to get it to work once somehow but after a shutdown and reboot it no longer worked. Just incase you need to know, I'm running Suse11.4 KDE 4.6, my wireless module I believe is a iwlagn or something like that. My laptop which Suse is running on is a Toshiba A665-S6086 core i3, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD.

Fedora Installation :: Booting Into Runlevel 3 ?

Sep 2, 2009

I installed Fedora 11 in VirtualBox, and the initial installation went fine. I then did a system update, and the video driver is broken. When I enter GDM, I have a black and blue screen, with the Fedora logo replicated across the screen.

I don't enter the Grub screen when I boot, and I wonder if there's another way to boot into runlevel 3. At one point, I'm prompted to type "I" to enter interactive mode, but doing this repeatedly still boots me into the GUI.

Fedora :: Cannot Get Back Automatically To Runlevel 5

Feb 3, 2010

Running 64-bit Fedora 10 with original installation runlevel being 5.

So, there was this need for working with runlevel 3 for some days, then I've edited "/etc/inittab", changing line

id:5:initdefault:

for line

id:3:initdefault:

And the system went well, restarting automatically on runlevel 3.

Now it needs to restore its original runlevel, that is 5.

I've edited "/etc/inittab" to its original state but the system keeps starting on runlevel 3.

Also, I've tried

# init 5

and

# telinit 5

Both commands load X and the login screen but then when it restarts, it gets back to runlevel 3.

What can be done to get this system back to runlevel 5, automatically, during its INIT process?

Fedora :: Runlevel 3 Video Modes

I am running a mainframe emulator on an old HP server in runlevel 3 text only. I have googled a bit but found no information on controlling the text video mode in runlevel 3. When I boot my Fedora 12 system chooses the highest resolution it can meaning my c3270 terminal emulator program (80x25) is in tiny font occupying a fraction of the upper left corner of the screen. I have looked everywhere but can find no mode setting commands for runlevel 3 text only.

Fedora :: Can't Start Directly In Runlevel 5 ?

Nov 18, 2010

I am using Fedora 13. If I boot directly to runlevel 5, the Fedora progress bar goes all the way across and then just stays at 100% and X never loads. I have to hard-restart the machine. However, if I press 'a' to append the kernel arguments and append the '3' to start in runlevel 3, login at the terminal that is displayed, and then type 'startx', everything works perfectly.

Fedora :: 14 Runlevel 3, Logout From X Does't Work?

Dec 24, 2010

i performed an upgrade from fedora 13 to 14 on my test fedora virtual machine (vmware player 3) and i have this incredible problem: I normally boot in runlevel 3 and i start X only when needed with the startx command. When I want to exit from the X environment I use the "log out <username>" command on the System menu (gnome is the desktop manager). After upgrading to fedora 14 and applying all the available upgrade, this won't work anymore! I'm able to start the X environment but when I try to logout the window/desktop manager got killed but X remain active, the background image is visible on the screen, no mouse or keyboard interaction is possible.

The system is stiil alive, i can login through ssh, but i was not able to do anything. manually switching the runlevel from 3 to 5 and viceversa with telinit doesn't solve the situation: switching to runlevel 5 cause the login screen to be visualized and i' can login in the gnome desktop environment but when i logout o when a try to switch to runlevel 3 I always obtain the same result: X remain active and unusable, it's impossible to go back to a text console. what can i do ? any of you has experienced a similar issue ?

I tried to install the Catalyst 9.9 driver on Fedora 11 64bit. Only when I was finished with the guide, I read the comments that said it wouldn't work on 2.6.30 kernel.I've written over my old xorg.conf, blacklisted radeon and radeonhd, restarted my machine. When i restarted my machine X wouldn't work ofcourse and all I got is some red coulor in the top of the screen, and no access to terminal via ALT+F2->F6. only way to get access is to add "telinit 1" to the startup line in GRUB

I've tried

Code:

X -configure

and

Code:

system-config-display --reconfig

The first dosen't work and the last dosen't seem to be installed....since i'm on wireless the network has problems to connect....I can pull a cable but not right now.....

I have yet to try:

Code:

Fedora :: Runlevel 3 - Larger Console Fonts Or Increase Size

Aug 1, 2010

I have fedora 13 set up on a HP6715S laptop. Runlevel 3 is a problem, because the capital letters are the size of full stops. Reading a little, I can try a grub vga setting, but I am not keen as my screen is 1200x800 and X cannot set it otherwise, so I doubt grub could. There's KMS for radeon cards, and the kernel can do what it likes. The biggest font supplied with fedora is sun12x22, which doesn't even have a euro sign. I gather I can go to a height of 32. Anyone know of larger consolefonts, or a wheeze to double the size of one of the others, e.g. lat9w-16? setfont-h32 increases height, but not zoom, so it's like a double spaced console.

Slackware :: Start The Various DE's From Runlevel 3 ?

Mar 19, 2010

I normally boot into runlevel 3. KDE is my default DE. I use

Code:

To open KDE. I would like to give the other DE's (full install of Slackware current) a fair try, but I am having trouble starting the other DE's from the command line. They all work from runlevel 4 using the kdm chooser, but that's just a hassle and in all honesty will likely irritate my lazy-bone to the point of not using them on a regular basis.

Booting into runlevel 4 isn't a good option because I am frequently experimenting and booting to the command line makes troubleshooting easier. What do I need to do to be able to start the other DE's in runlevel 3?

Ubuntu :: Runlevel 3 And Graphics Driver?

Sep 16, 2010

This post is basically an addendum to my other post located at this link: [URL]... The "new" video problem I'm having is that now I can't get the resolution back to the regular 1200x1600. So what I did is download the latest driver and the previous one to try as well. When I tried to install them it said I can't because I had an X server running. I ran an init 3 to change my run level and then did a >runlevel command, which reported "3 3". I'm assuming that confirms I am in fact running at level 3. I then ran the following command:

>sudo sh ./NVIDIA..yada yada yada (driver info) It tried to install it but said I'm STILL running an X server. What am I missing? Also, I did the init 3 command and confirmed it was "3 3" and then tried to run >startx from the command line. It said "fatal server error: Server is already active for display 0. If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again."
