Fedora :: Time Conflicts In Dual Boot Setup (F12 / WinXP)

Nov 24, 2009

The time in my Fedora 12 x64 installation is 5 hours behind what it should be. When I change it to the correct time, Windows XP x64 is now 5 hours ahead! (Dual boot setup). How I can sync the times on both os's. Both are set to GMT-5.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Remix With WinXP Now WinXP BSOD On Boot?

Sep 12, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu Remix 10.04 on my wifes MSI U100 netbook. I did a dual boot just in case she had to get into Windows for something. I let the install automatically partion (did the side by side option). Anyway, Ubuntu works fine and imported all her documents and stuff. Problem is Windows XP won't boot. The first time I tried to boot Windows XP I got a message saying the hardware had changed and I had to select safe mode, normal boot, last known good, etc... I booted normally. I got the splash screen followed by a quick flash of BSOD and a reboot. I does this no matter how I try to boot Windows (safe, command prompt, etc). Anyone have any idea what the problem is?

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot 10.10 With WinXP - RAID Got Corrupted

Oct 21, 2010

I originally wanted to dual install 10.10 64 Ubuntu with Windows 7 64 RAID 1 HP PC, but RAID got corrupted and I could find no fix online except using fakeraid unsupported software. The whole thing blew my muind. I gave up after 4 or so reinstalls of windows 7 to fix RAID. So I decided to install a dual boot 10.10 Ubuntu i86 with my old WinXP i86. I kept getting these errors at boot up: unknown filesystem, file not found, out of disk, no such partion and so on. I tried just about every grub reinstall I could find, including article here: "Recovering Ubuntu after Installing Windows."

After a number of tries my friend installed Ubuntu successfully, but then when I installed windows xp I am stuck here, again. I did do the Reload grub tutorials again as well. I may just give up on WinXP and have my friend reinstall Ubuntu for me.

Ubuntu :: Running Dual Boot 10.10 And Winxp On A MSI P4M900 Motherboard

Dec 6, 2010

Was running dual boot 10.10 and winxp on a MSI P4M900 motherboard. Have two HDs - one with OSs and some storage and the other purely backup for storage and Ubuntu home. Motherboard died and going to be replaced by Gigabyte G31 board. I will be using the same video, audio PCI cards and memory from old board. Should I look to a clean install of 10.10 and then bring back to life from my backup files (bookmarks, email etc) or could I plug in hard drives and boot normally? There is conflicting advice when I google - some say its OK just to boot, the kernel will sort out the new mboard drivers, others say you need a clean install.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Mint8/XP - WinXP Loading As A Read Only

Feb 22, 2010

WinXP Partition loading as a read only and can't fix it with PYSDM (storage device manager) Let me provide some history as to how everything was installed: From my old WIN XP hard drive I used clonezilla to clone the drive to a partition on my new hard drive for Linux. Windows is on SDA4 which is the last partition of the drive, it is mounted at sda4/windows using ntfs. I then loaded Mint 8 gnome on the 2nd partition sda2 using ext3 mounted at /, sda1 is my Linux swap, and sda3 is mounted at /home using ext3. While installing I selected to mount Linux ext3 at /

When I choose to load winXP from the grub boot loader I get dev/sda4 no such device 10CDR36778638F73. Also when I try to unmount from disk utility I get the following error: Error unmounting: umount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: umount: only root can unmount UUID=10CDF36778638F73 from /windows Seemslike I need to rename the drive but it won't let me in disk utility.

My Problem is that within PYSDM (storage device manager) I uncheck Mount file system (sda4/windows) as a read only but it will not stay unchecked. I have unchecked it hit unmount and mount and it still is checked to mount as a read only. This is the code in options for sda4 in PYSDM (storage device manager) nls=utf8,umask=007,gid=46

General :: Dual Boot Missing Hal.dll File - Winxp Works But Not Ubuntu

Jan 8, 2011

I have tried searching for the same problem but can't find it. Close but not exact. I have a dell optiplex I use for internet surfing. I do a reformat every few months to get the junk off it.I do a reformat to clean the drive and load XP PRO then load ubuntu 7. or 8. It gives me the option to use either at start up.

I did it a few weeks ago and it has been running fine until I did updates of both XP and ubuntu. When I it fired it up Win XP worked fine but when I choose ubuntu I would get the corrupted or missing hal.dll error and it wouldnt go any further. Several reboots with the same result XP works but not ubuntu.I did a reinstall of the hal.dll file using XP disk for repair according to britec on ..... (but I didn' t do the second step yet). Now I still get the corrupted or missing hal.dll error when I try to get into ubuntu and if I choose XP it freezes. I try going into safe mode and it loads but (wireless) mouse/keyboard won't work.

Fedora Installation :: Dual Boot Setup - Resize 20gb Partition Through The 11 Installer

Nov 28, 2009

I have a computer with windows xp on it, and i want to dual boot with fedora 11. I have 2 hard drives in it, 1 500gb HD and 1 350gb HD. the 350 isnt much concern b/c its just sitting there all free and unpartitioned right now. Now my 500gb is split into 3 partitions, a 20gb(with xp installed on it) a 105 gb with pretty much nothing on it and a 350gb with all my data.

My problem is I'm trying to resize my 20gb partition through the fedora 11 installer and when I tell it to resize say to 10gb it starts and fails the resize. its a NTFS partition and the windows stuff on the partition is only about 8gb. any idea whats going on? the only error I get is "The resize has failed"

Red Hat / Fedora :: RHEL 5 Dual Networking - Ethx (0,1) Devices Are Brought Up Be Changed At Boot Time

Jun 3, 2010

I'm having an issue with dual networking on RHEL 5. My initial question is can the order the ethx (0,1) devices are brought up be changed at boot time, so I could bring up eth1 before eth0?

Some background: eth0 is DHCP'd and using DNS, basically this is my primary network. eth1 is an isolated subnet, with a manually configured IP which has no connection to eth0 or the outside world. When I bring up networking it first brings up eth0 and then eth1, what happens is eth1 becomes the 'primary' network of the host and I lose my connection to DNS/NFS/NIS and the outside world.

If I login and manually bring up eth1 first, then eth0 everyone is happy and connections work. So, I'm looking for a solution to either bring up eth1 before eth0 or somehow make eth0 my primary IP and not have it be clobbered by eth1.

Slackware :: Take Current Windows7 (x64) Setup And Make It Into A Dual-boot Setup With Slackware 13.0?

Jan 24, 2010

I'm trying to take my current windows7 (x64) setup and make it into a dual-boot setup with slackware 13.0 (x32) and am hitting a brickwall. I guess I would like to know if I can salvage the situation without formating my windows drive. I fully intend to, but I had hoped to not do it this month. I'd like to get dual boot going so I can master it and acquire all the files/drivers I'll want and then format and do it 100% right next time.

Currently I have windows setup on a 3x 500gb Raid0 onboard array which itself has been flawless. After I shrunk my current partition size to give me about 25gb of free space I proceeded to setup Linux, and I was unable to perform the cfdisk portion for partitioning the array for Linux.

I tried using cfdisk:
/dev/hdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)
/dev/sdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)

I even attempted to locate with: cat proc/partition and tried using cfdisk on every device it located. It always said it was either an unknown partition table and should I start at zero, or bad partition. I was of course too concerned over my windows setup (which has almost 1tb of stuff I have not backed up) to go any further into the unknown.

PS: I have used Slackware before, back at 8.1, 10, and even a very brief interlude at 12.0, this is my first attempt on this computer however with 13.0, it is currently running fine on my laptop and my PS3 (Laptop is even dual booting 7/Slack13. Albeit without raid)

Ubuntu :: Setup A Default OS With Dual Boot?

May 10, 2010

I recently installed Ubuntu and I am dual booting it with Windows 7. I showed it to my friend and he likes it. He wants me to dual boot his computer with Ubuntu, also.We were wondering if there was a way to configure GRUB and that stuff so that it doesn't go to the GRUB boot screen when you start your computer where you pick an OS. We were wondering if you could set a default OS that the computer automatically booted to, unless you press a button at startup, and then you could get to GRUB to pick a different OS.

The reason being is because his whole family uses the computer, and we don't want to confuse them with GRUB every time they start up the computer. We just want the computer to boot to Win7 by default, but being able to boot into Ubuntu if you press a button to get to GRUB when booting.

Ubuntu :: Setup Dual-boot On HP Mini?

Jul 2, 2011

I bought my wife an HP Mini [URL].. and want to get Ubuntu Netbook running on it. It comes with Windows 7 Starter, which we want to retain because Netflix won't run with Linux (gives you some BS error about "your browser is compatible, but your OS isn't"). So, I'd like to dual boot.

My desktop right now runs Kubuntu, and then I can boot in XP using VirtualBox OSE. Owing to the fact that the netbook is down on power relative to my desktop, doesn't seem like a good idea on the netbook, hence dual boot. I've seen a lot of "help, I just screwed this up!" threads, and since HP wasn't kind enough to send along a disc with Windows 7 on it, I need to get this right the first time. So, I'm going to post what I'm planning to do, let me know if I'm going to mess this up. I've compiled the below looking through a bunch of previous threads.

1) Defrag Windows drive
2) Use Windows 7 software to shrink the Windows partition
2b) Do NOT create a new partition using Windows software, just keep it unallocated
3) Boot off of USB key with Ubuntu in it, select unallocated space for install

Questions:

1) When I boot the computer up, I should get a GRUB screen asking which OS I want to boot into, correct?
2) I'm downloading 11.04 right now...anything to watch out for?

3) I couldn't find an install file for Ubuntu Netbook, do I make that selection during the install?

Slackware :: Boot Into Dual Monitor Setup ?

Jun 15, 2011

I created a dual monitor setup in Slack 13.37 using the KDE systemsettings -> Monitor Setup function. (Sadly I had to rebuild ~/.kde in the process, but that's a different story.)

I verify that ~/.kde/share/config/krandrrc contains the new monitor setup (both screens active). I have saved a startup session with krandrtray running. However, when I logon, the system always starts with both screens in clone mode. I always have to go into systemsettings or krandrtay and redo the dual monitor configuration.

Is there a better way? Do I have to create a suitable xorg.conf (which I will try when I get home) or is there another way to boot into the dual config automatically?
