Have the following partitions, I've grown md1 from 3 drives to 4 drives with mdadm. It is now the size below of 531899712 from 354599292.

As you can see above however, the filesystem is not growing. What am I missing. I don't believe I need to do anything with the partitions. I should just resize my array as I have and xfs_grow and be finished.
I've already asked this in the mythbuntu and didn't get an answer there so I'm trying here. OK just added another 2Tb WD drive to my mdadm controled RAID5 array, and the reshape is finished:-

My fileserver initially had 3 1TB drives in RAID 5 configured with mdadm as /dev/md1. (System root is a mirrored raid on /dev/md0) I went to go add a 4th 1TB drive to /dev/md1 and grow the raid 5 accordingly. I was initially following this guide: [URL] but ran into issues on the 3rd and 4th commands. I've been trying a few things to remedy the issue since, but no luck. The drive seems to have been added to /dev/md1 properly, but I can't get the filesystem to resize to 3TB. I also am not entirely sure how /dev/md1p1 got created, but it appears to be the primary partition on the logical device /dev/md1.

The filesystem originated as ext3, I believe its showing up as ext2 in some of these results because I disabled the journal when doing some initial troubleshooting. Not sure what the issue is, but I didn't want to blindly perform operations on the filesystem and risk losing my data.
I'm trying to do a fresh Fedora 14 install from usb live stick. On installation got to partition program and since I want my old /home partition I pointed the partitions as they're supposed to be and apart from /home marked all partitions to be formatted to ext4. After the format or in the end of it came up a prompt I couldn't past. The following link shows a pic of that prompt:

I am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:

Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message
*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage
*Would you like to continue (y/n)
Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.
Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?
I want to be able to add a physical drive to an existing filesystem, and PRESTO! That filesystem has more storage and/or redundancy. When one of the physical drives eventually fail, no problem, Ive lost some redundancy, I just have to install a new drive before another one fails.Lets assume I have 4 physical drives.*What Is This Configuration? *[URL]...But I am unclear how to get a logical volume that is mirrored and linear.
The last time I tried software RAID 1 (dm-x) under lvm, it was very fragile. Systemd could not start it,and then an update to mdadm put a stake through its heart. So I know that does not work.
Vsftpd virtual users, when a user connects via of ftp they can view all files in the file system. Have a virtual web server and vsftpd working, each user's username is their domain name. FTP works, but not the way I wish for it to work. I only wish for a user to be able to view the files under their username, not the entire Fedora file system and limit changes to files ONLY under their domain name.

Setup: Thinkpad T23 (dual boot) upgrade from fc10 using DVD iso.checked with checksum and burnt by K3b.
History/actions taken:
Burnt iso to DVD and install/upgrade froze "creating File System " froze after approximately 10 minutes.
(completely froze and had to use the power button!)
Checked disk OK on laptop, tried again, same fault.
Bought another DVD.(different die) and tried again, same fault.
Tried another laptop HD, (full install not dual boot) , same fault.
Removed partitions with fdisk, but still no luck.
Tried disk on a spare HD on my PC and it works, I get into the window allowing software selection!
Tried a "Linux Format" fc 10 disk and that works, also tried a PCLinux LXF disk which also worked.
The laptop does not report any problems at bootup and I do not not what else to try

I'm a bit of a Linux newbie, but I did manage to set up the following RAID-5 system:1x 500GB system drive on ATA IDE4x 1TB SATA drives in software RAIDLinux = Fedora 13So here's what happened. I set up the system to send me an email every time the mdadm stat file changed, so it would send me emails when in periodically ran a self-test. I was away and noticed that the self-test was going incredibly slow (usually took 8 hours...was on course for taking 250 days!) A colleague decided to just reboot the system.Afterwards, the system would not boot and, while all 5 drives were connected, would stop at an endlessly scrolling error message of: Code: ata4.01: exception Emask 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0

I wanted to shrink my Windows NTFS partition to allow me to grow my extended partition which contains my Linux partitions, namely to grow my swap space and home directory some however it just fails at enlarging the extended partition. Is this a known problem because I know there were rewrites to the storeage backend of Anaconda.

I have seen this on a few occasions and thought nothing of it, I have let them complete in the past and was able to boot no problem, but recently that has changed, whether or not I let the checks complete I get the following error:

A maintenance shell will now be started.
Any thoughts on recovering this partition or at least gaining enough access to it to backup some data?
I have had a system crash and have no idea why - I have booted up through the cd and are runnign off that but i need to know how to get the information off the hard drive before I attemp to format and start again.

I can start my webservers sometimes, but not at everytime. After restarting the system, again I can start my web server as usual. Whether it is a problem of fedora9 or web servers?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running a modified version of OpenSUSE 11.1 from the susestudio builder. I've run across a weird issue whereby gparted is unable to create anything more than an hfs filesystem.
It seems that the package libparted simply doesn't exist in any of the repositories I'm using. I am figuring this would affect what gparted is able to do, although I'm unsure since the program itself runs fine.
I am using GRUB bootloader. I can boot into windows fine. But booting into linux gives me the error "kernel panic: unable to mount root fs on unknown block(0,0)I got LILO to load linux fine but GRUB always gives me this error regardless of the linux OS for this particular computer.

Attached is an eSATA multi-bay with four hotswap disks.Since these disks are rotating on a daily basis I'm looking for the best filesystem for hot swapping purposes. If there is no choice I'll just stick to ext4 with safe unmount. But if its possible I'd like something so I could pull the disk out without damage. In my case it would be safe to assume that the disk hasn't been written to in the last 5 minutes before rotating.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI want the users of the other machines, which have accounts in my server, to mount their home directories in the server. I managed to do everything, except that for the moment I can only mount their home directories by being the superuser of the server, a privilege that I don't want to give to the users. Also, I don't want their home directories to be mounted automatically. Thus, from a "normal" filesystem share, I want to: 1-The home directories of user in other machines be mountable in the user areas of the server (I can do that already).
2-I want that the users be able to mount by hand their directories, so that the directories are not permanently mounted. Currently, I can only mount and umount being the superuser of the server. I don't want to give superuser privileges to all server users.
3-I don't want their directories to be mounted on startup (otherwise I could simply add the mounts to /etc/fstab). Thus, does anyone knows how can I give the users the privilege only to mount a specific filesystem?
I installed netatalk for Linux in Fedora 10. I managed to get the service starting correctly at every boot and from Linux side everything looks good. I even manged to tweak avahi-daemon to advertise my server on the network so would show in Finder sidebar (with a snazy tux icon). But when I try to connect to the server it asks me for username and password (as it should), but my password doesn't work. I changed my password, I even gave it a simple one to rule out possibility of "fat-finger"-ing. No success.

I have recently Installed Fedora 11. I have installed postgres like yum install postgresql but I wonder there is no user created for postgres when I tried su postgres system says, no identity for user postgres. even when I tried to connect postgres server using psql then it says

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and am having a major issue with it not booting. My PC worked fine yesterday but when I tried to boot this morning I get the error "error: unknown filesystem" and under that I get the "grub rescue>" prompt.
At first I thought this was just a problem with Grub that would be easy fixed so I put in my Ubuntu USB and loaded it up in live mode. But when I try to look at my file system from within the live environment I can't seem to see any of my files.
I have looked at the drive in GParted and my main file system (/dev/sda1) shows up as 'unknown', while the swap partition (/dev/sda5) shows up as it should. I have also looked at the drive with the Disk Utility and the SMART Status says the disk is healthy.
I am really concerned about this as currently the system is totally unable to load, not only that but I am also unable to recover my data from the drive which is my main concern as I havent done a backup for quite some time and I have a lot of python code that I have been working on that I really need to get back.
Has anyone got any idea of what to do and how I might be able to sort this out or at the very least recover all my data. I can't understand why this has happened I have not made any changes to the system recently other than installing the updates that came through yesterday. This is a really urgent issue for me and any help will be very appreciated.
i have a question about the best choice for a filesystem: We have in our company a productive webserver running debian with nginx webserver to serve images. The number is about 15 million, they are around 2kb or 3kb of size each and they are stored under some subdir in /home with a hashed subdirectory tree which is 2 leves deep. the images are copied with nfs from some other machine time to time. We get high load when this copying is running. Currently we are using ext3, and considering moving to jfs, cause its relativly low load impact, but i am still courios about the performance. I think serving lots of images is often practiced thing, so i would be interested what others are using as filesystem in this scenario, or if someone could make a recommendation for our case.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm currently running a small server using 9.10 and I wondered if using groups was a possible route in order to keep users away from the bulk of the file system and keep them in locked their home directories.
What I planned to do is use a group named 'allowsystemfiles' to be added to admin accounts, then to set parts of the file system to that group, along with the permissions 0760 to keep non-admin users out.
Is is a good idea or will this hose my system?
