I'm trying to do a fresh Fedora 14 install from usb live stick. On installation got to partition program and since I want my old /home partition I pointed the partitions as they're supposed to be and apart from /home marked all partitions to be formatted to ext4. After the format or in the end of it came up a prompt I couldn't past. The following link shows a pic of that prompt:
[URL]
What should I do to complete the install? I have partitions:
/
/home
/boot
/swap
Solution: Burned the image on CD and installed from it.
when I try to boot into Ubuntu 9.10 the first thing that happens is this:
Filesystem checks are in progress
I have seen this on a few occasions and thought nothing of it, I have let them complete in the past and was able to boot no problem, but recently that has changed, whether or not I let the checks complete I get the following error:
Mount of filesystem failed.43708f-0498-4699-9fd5-1f52df0bc181 A maintenance shell will now be started.
Any thoughts on recovering this partition or at least gaining enough access to it to backup some data?
I have had a system crash and have no idea why - I have booted up through the cd and are runnign off that but i need to know how to get the information off the hard drive before I attemp to format and start again.
Error msg:

I am using GRUB bootloader. I can boot into windows fine. But booting into linux gives me the error "kernel panic: unable to mount root fs on unknown block(0,0)I got LILO to load linux fine but GRUB always gives me this error regardless of the linux OS for this particular computer.
When I try to boot to OpenSUSE I get the following error during boot-up: unknown filesystem type 'reiserfs' could not mount root filesystem - exiting to /bin/sh$
This only started happening quite recently - before this I could boot to Linux quite happily.
I have a CIFS share mounted from the "Places" menu and it is accessible from the desktop.I am unable to find its location in the filesystem using "mount" Where does it get mounted to?
Running F12 on my compaq evo N410c. Did a system restart 4rm gnome logged in as root & now grub cant mount my root filesystem, it boots vista though. How do i rectify dis.
I'm trying to mount an external DVD +RW Drive so I can burn a directory from my Linux Server to disk. I think I've figured out how to mount the drive, but it only works when there's a disk with data in the drive. When I enter mount /dev/scd1 /mnt I'm able to read from the drive, no problem. When I try to do the same thing, however, with a blank disk I get the following message: "mount: you must specify a filesystem type" So I'm assuming I need to prepare the disk somehow. I've verified that the dvd+rw-tools package is installed on the RH server but I'm not sure what the next step is.
My Fedora 12 System was failed when booting. The message like that : mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/mapper/my_vol missing codepage or helper program, or other error. In some case, useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so Can't mount at root filesystem. [drm: drm_mode_rmfb ] *ERROR* tried to remove a fb that we didn't own. Boot has failed, sleep forever. I guess something wrong with my hard disk, so the bootloader can't recognize the filesystem type.
I've downloaded Fedora 12 and decided to try and install it on my old laptop which is currently running Ubuntu 9.10 with no problems.
When I boot from the live cd, it starts to load with the 3 bars on the bottom, one on top of the other, one is white, one is dark blue, the other is in between those colours in the spectrum somewhere....
Anyway, the load bars complete and "Fedora 12" turns white, then the following output populates:
mount: unknown filesystem type 'DM_Snapshot_Cow' (<----- repeated a bunch of times) can't mount root filesystem Boot has failed, sleeping forever.
i am trying to compile kernel 2.6.23 on Fedora 12 After fixing a few bugs (getline error, %dil ,etc) i was able to compile the kernel made initramfs img using dracut updated grub and then booted up the new kernel 2.6.23 but it fails to boot with following error mount: unknown filesystem type 'ext4'
I installed Ubuntu Server 9.10 in a virtual machine, and I'm trying to install the VMware Tools but I can't mount the installer CD: $ sudo mount /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom mount: unknown filesystem type 'iso9660'
I am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:
*/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced it then goes on to say..
*An error occured during the file system check. Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot when you leave the shell. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message
*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage *Would you like to continue (y/n)
Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.
Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?
Have the following partitions, I've grown md1 from 3 drives to 4 drives with mdadm. It is now the size below of 531899712 from 354599292.
[Code].....
As you can see above however, the filesystem is not growing. What am I missing. I don't believe I need to do anything with the partitions. I should just resize my array as I have and xfs_grow and be finished.
I want to be able to add a physical drive to an existing filesystem, and PRESTO! That filesystem has more storage and/or redundancy. When one of the physical drives eventually fail, no problem, Ive lost some redundancy, I just have to install a new drive before another one fails.Lets assume I have 4 physical drives.*What Is This Configuration? *[URL]...But I am unclear how to get a logical volume that is mirrored and linear.
The last time I tried software RAID 1 (dm-x) under lvm, it was very fragile. Systemd could not start it,and then an update to mdadm put a stake through its heart. So I know that does not work.
I cannot seem to get past the "creating File System.." window on a laptop upgrade
Setup: Thinkpad T23 (dual boot) upgrade from fc10 using DVD iso.checked with checksum and burnt by K3b.
History/actions taken:
Burnt iso to DVD and install/upgrade froze "creating File System " froze after approximately 10 minutes. (completely froze and had to use the power button!)
Checked disk OK on laptop, tried again, same fault.
Bought another DVD.(different die) and tried again, same fault.
Tried another laptop HD, (full install not dual boot) , same fault.
Removed partitions with fdisk, but still no luck.
Tried disk on a spare HD on my PC and it works, I get into the window allowing software selection!
Tried a "Linux Format" fc 10 disk and that works, also tried a PCLinux LXF disk which also worked.
The laptop does not report any problems at bootup and I do not not what else to try
I'm a bit of a Linux newbie, but I did manage to set up the following RAID-5 system:1x 500GB system drive on ATA IDE4x 1TB SATA drives in software RAIDLinux = Fedora 13So here's what happened. I set up the system to send me an email every time the mdadm stat file changed, so it would send me emails when in periodically ran a self-test. I was away and noticed that the self-test was going incredibly slow (usually took 8 hours...was on course for taking 250 days!) A colleague decided to just reboot the system.Afterwards, the system would not boot and, while all 5 drives were connected, would stop at an endlessly scrolling error message of: Code: ata4.01: exception Emask 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0
ata4.01: BMDMA stay 0x64 ata4.01: failed command: READ DMA ata4.01: (a bunch of hex numbers)
The problem of such standing Fedora 12-i686, with all the latest updates, the next time (do not remember what he's updated), restarted the computer ... after as soon as he began to load line (Grub boot norms) wrote many times that the Mount: You Must specify the filesystem type from the LiveCD tried all said that there was no public Linux systems, tried a single mode w that crusty file system ... tell me how best to restore the data from the HDD ...
I'm having some trouble with my Ubuntu 10.04. It had been working normally, and now my startup isn't occurring normally. The bootloader shows my Windows install and two different revisions of Ubuntu. Upon letting it load Ubuntu, however, it goes to BusyBox v1.13.3 and says "built in shell (ash)" and presents me with a functioning command line.
I'm comfortable with working on the command line, but does anyone know where to start with this?
I have installed debian recently and not able to mount any other volume except FileSystem. It says -You are not privileged to mount this volume.I have tried everything including raising the permissions of the user and changing the group to root but in vain.??
Something very strange happened. Firefox was acting a little strange, so I decided to restart my system. When ubuntu started to boot it showed an error that said filesystem failed to mount. It gave me an "emergency" command line and told me ctrl-D would retry the mount. Why would this happen? I haven't modified any system files for a very long time. It told me to run fsck (I think thats what it was) and that seemed to fix the problem. Just curious as to what could have happened. Anyone else have this problem? Anything I should try to fix so this won't happen in the future?
I have ubuntu and windows installed on my computer, and sometimes I would need something from the folders I have on windows and I would mount the main hard drive. But now it's telling me "Not Authorized"
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 on a dell desktop from idk when, its fairly old but regardless it was all running fine until about a week ago I got the infamous:
Mount of filesystem failed. A maintenance shell will now be started. Control-D will terminate this shell and start a new one. admin@ or whatever it is you get the point.
I've been trying all the possible solutions I could find and nothing seems to work. I just want to be able to use this computer. I don't care if I lose files, or have to re-install Ubuntu or any of that, if I can just get the thing running again. I've tried re-installing, and booting from the disc etc. none of which have worked. Basically, I just want to erase Ubuntu and re-install it.
For some reason I get the following error when trying to mount a partition in my hard drive:Quote:Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:ount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda7,missing codepage or helper program, or other errorIn some cases useful info is found in syslog - trydmesg | tail or soSome more help from dmesg | tail:Quote:

I could not bootup a system as during the bootup procedure, it was throwing a ton of seg faults, so I removed the SATA hard drive from the system, put the drive in a USB hard drive dock, and attached that drive to another linux system. I want to mount the filesystem to /mnt/external and poke around however I'm not sure how to mount the filesystem. The /boot drive on the USB drive (/dev/sdb1) was automounted on my desktop by CentOS, but the root filesystem (/dev/sdb2) was not.
Here's what I tried: Code: [root@localhost ~]# mount /dev/sdb2 /mnt/external/ mount: you must specify the filesystem type
I already have an existing LVM system on the system the disk is attached to so I don't want the USB drive to conflict with that. Both systems were installed using the same method and the internal disk (/dev/sda) in the working system is the same size as the USB disk (/dev/sdb), 500GB. I think there might be a naming conflict as the same default names for the volgroups/logical volumes were the same, so I think I have to rename something on the USB drive?
Code: [root@localhost ~]# fdisk -l Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes .....
I've just updated to f12 from f11 and I can no longer mount 4 of my hard drives. The hard drives used to be in a raid array on a highpoint raid card, I removed this partitioned and formatted the hard drives and have been using them for about the past year without a problem. I am using a Asus P5E-VM motherboard. All hard drives are running ext4. The only thing I've really tried is noprobing the effected hard drives to no success.
p.s. I don't want to repartition/format these as they have some data on which I'd prefer not to loose.
# uname -r 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686.PAE # mount /dev/sdb1 mount: special device /dev/sdb1 does not exist #blkid /dev/sdc: TYPE="highpoint_raid_member"
after the latest 157mb of updates i have made on fedora 12 i cant mount any media (CD/DVD/USB etc). I keep getting this error "Failed to execute child process "gnome-mount" (No such file or directory)"
shall explain my problem step by step! so that you all can understand!
1. Out of 120gb hardisk, i created an 100mb in the first cylinder of the harddisk and installed the "symantec boot magic" for dual boot option after switching on the system.
2. Next 70gb is for windows and installed the same.
3. Rest were for "Linux" !! In which i created on 100mb for "/boot" loader files, then one 1gb for "swap" area and the rest of the memory for "/" mounting point.
4. After all, i installed the "VMWARE" in windows, and while selecting the mount of linux, i selected the respective linux portion, and did the other settings.
5. Once done with this, i powered on the machine in vmware, but it was saying "BTMAGIC" not able to find, install again..
6. Cant we not mount the linux via "vmware" which is installed in windows, as i had used "symantec boot magic" for mounting windows/linux??
