Fedora Servers :: Importing XP Machine Fails
Oct 18, 2010
We are trying to consolidate some servers to run as virtual machines on our F13 host. After booting into SystemRescueCD, we take a dd of /dev/sda (we initially did a dd of sda1 before realizing our error)We transferred this image (EDI.img) to our F13 VM host. and created a new virtual machine using the graphical Virtual Machine Manager using "import an existing disk image" and the same EDI.img file as the storage volume.
Unable to boot, I've done much googling to find the registry entries of MigrateIDE.reg - which I've manually added to the image's registry via chntpw -e /mnt/windows/WINDOWS/system32/config/system.Another forum's posting advised to boot from the XP iso and allow this installation process to "repair" the existing installation. I'm still sitting at a blank screen with minimal CPU activity. Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to migrate a physical XP machine to be a virtual machine running under F13?

Tonight i had the bright idea to upgrade from the previous LTS release to 10.04 LTS on my physical collocate in texas.
Ran do-release-upgrade --proposed per the ubuntu LTS upgrade guide, everything went smoothly, few random package issues with spamassasin and my apache configs but nothing that made me weep. Rand a apt-get -u dist-upgrade after to make sure nothing was missed and all was right in the world.
....Until i rebooted. Now my machine fails to boot and falls through to a (initramfs) prompt.
everything was hosted off this box and i'm desperate to get it back up. After hours of googling all i can find is info for DomU's with the same issue....but that has to due with the ubunut developers making 10.04 incompatible with older dom0's or something....and again this is a phyiscal machine.
My hosting provider has me booted into a RIPlinux rescue disk to work on this
Here is my fstab
Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
#/dev/sda2

I have couple of users in one machine. I can access the /etc/passwd,/etc/shadow and /etc/group files in this box. I have another box. I want to create some user accounts in the second box by just looking in the passwd, shadow and group files in the first box. I would just copy over the corresponding lines into the corresponding for whichever accounts I want to create as new and also change the lines for which I want to update the account information. Is this possible and will also the passwords work fine? Please also let me know there is any good tool for automatically doing this kind of stuff. Both the boxes that I have are Ubuntu machines though one is running Ubuntu 8.04 and the other is 10.04.

I am using swig framework to invoke certain C APIs in a C Library from a python program. Unfortunately the python software needs to run on a 64 bit virtualization platform, whereas the C library is 32 bit (its a 3rd party library whose 64 bit version is not available). Lets say the name of the swig generated shared library is _my_swig.so. When the python wrapper makes "import _my_swig" call, i see the following error
ImportError: -snipsnip-/_my_swig.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32
which probably means I am trying to import a 32 bit library from 64 bit python. Can anybody suggest any workaround?

I completed the installation of VMWare Server 2.0.2 onto a CentOS 5.4 64-bit distribution. There is a VMware virtual machine file on the server in question, and I want to activate it through the application console.
I did not see anything readily apparent that would facilitate the importing of the virtual machine file. Does anyone have a procedure that can accomplish this task?

I am struggling with what might be a minor problem. I have a home computer which I would like to setup as a webserver and hence give it a static IP address. It is connected to by wire to a router that is connected to the WAN via PPPOE. If I enable the network card on DHCP it works fine in browsing the web. If I now set it to static IP address it does not brown. Essentially I use the command setup to run the static IP setup. I then set my IP address to 192.168.254.X , the subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and the default gateway to 192.168.254.1 (this is the router connected to the WAN). I am able to ping the router, however when I try and browse on static it does not work. Your help will be most appreciated as this has taken way too long to solve and I have Googled as much without success.

I'm trying to move an existing webserver from an old machine to a machine with Fedora 12 installed on it. ThSince the version available in the repository is version 2.X I downloaded the source from apache.org and tried to compile it. I ran configure using the default options and it an without any warnings or errors. However when I run make it fails with the following error:
gcc -c -I../os/unix -I../include -DLINUX=22 -DHAVE_SET_DUMPABLE -DUSE_HSREGEX -DNO_DL_NEEDED `../apaci` htpasswd.c

what the problem and more importantly the solution to this problem is?

Ejabberd fails to start in f-12. ejabberd-2.0.5-9.fc12.i686. This ran fine in f-10 and f-11. Getting a large number of strange error messages from the ejabberd log code...
Looks like it may be a permissions problem.
Anybody from the ejabberd community here that has gotten ejabberd to work on f-12?

I'm completely stumped by a problem with httpd in Fedora 13. It fails to start on boot: I can see: Starting htpd: FAILED, in /var/log/boot.log, but I can't find anything else in messages, audit.log or anywhere else that gives me any clue why. The weird thing is that running:
run_init service httpd start
after boot _works_ and the server runs fine, but even when it's running OK,
service httpd status
reports
httpd dead but subsys locked
I'm guessing that the problem somehow relates to selinux, but I can't find anything in the audit logs that gives me a clue. How to turn on more logging so that I can get closer to the problem. I finally discovered the cause. This system was originally configured to use network services directly, without NetworkManager. It had been upgraded a number of times since installation. It seems that over time, if you have turned off NetworkManager, the defaults have changed. Used to be that the network services was 'enabled' by default (hence started at run time). Now, the default is 'disabled'. Httpd couldn't start because there was no network to start on. Enabling network services at boot time fixed this. I guess I should have noticed this. But one might think that httpd failing to start because of the lack of a network might at least give a warning message in the logs about the reason.

I have a desktop running on Fedora 14. I installed LAMP by using scripts for package installation. That works fine. Also, I have a virtual environment (Virtual Machine Manager), in which I installed Fedora 14 as well. I tried to install LAMP by the same scripts and the same packages as on my desktop, but strangely - it does not work.
I figured out that in both cases two instances of httpd.conf are installed, one residing in /etc/httpd/conf/, the other one in /usr/local/apache2/conf. The first one seems to belong to the server that is by default installed together with Fedora 14. The second one is the result from the package installation.
For a reason unknown to me, the second one (/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf) is always activated on my desktop, while the first one (/usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf) is activated by default in my virtual computer. I have been able to change the DocumentRoot with succes.
I know how to install LAMP with yum, I have a second virtual computer with LAMP installed by yum, and the whole question is not an urgent one, but... I am just curious... what could have caused the difference? And what would I have to do whenever I would like to use the package installation or vice versa?

I have an ssh server running at home and I'd like to be able to connect to it from an internet cafe that wont let me run putty or java applets. Is there any way to ssh into my home machine through a browser? The only solutions I could find where java based.
In theory, would it be possible to open an ssh connection that reads and writes to a file, and then make a cgi script that writes commands to the file and formats the output to html?

I have an F12 installation on which I have installed NoMachine's NX server. I can remote in nicely when needed (try to do as much as possible via SSH) while not having to boot into and stay on Gnome on the server and run VNC.I noted that when I try to start the Virtual Machine Manager from an NX session, I get an error that VMM is "unable to open a connection to the libvirt management daemon". libvirtd is running, however. And, when I startx on the server and try there, VMM works fine.Is this an inherent problem with the use of VMM, or something correctable?

I have the Samba server & users configured, I can access between Linux/Windows shares and both SMB & NMB services are set to be enabled at boot.Everything working. But when I restart the computer, I notice in services configuration that "This service is dead." for NMB. Therefore I have to enable it manually upon boot so that it works.I'm using Fedora 10, fresh installed and updated. I've noticed through search that others have had this issue as well throughout other versions of Fedora, yet I have not found a conclusive solution to this.

Trying to setup Samba for the first time and am unable to connect to the share from my Windows machine. It is a very basic setup, just trying to setup a single share to use a backup location for my windows files.
I've done the following:
1. Fresh install if fedora 15
2. installed samba
rpm -qa | grep samba
gives the following:
[Code].....
3. Used samba server configuration to setup the share and create the samba users
4. When I tried to connect from my windows machine I get the error that the server is not accessible, you might not have permission to use this network resource or I get the error "windows cannot access server, check spelling and try again.
Both computers can ping each other. I opened samba ports in the linux firewall and tried to connect again: same error Disabled firewall all together and have the same error. Here is the output from the testparm command

I've searched a number of forum posts and have seen similar issues but the specifics are different and I haven't yet found a solution. I'm running Gnome on Fedora 13 and clicked "Install Updates." About 513 packages were set to be installed, but I get an error midway through:
Quote: The GPG keys listed for the "RPM Fusion for Fedora Rawhide - Free" repository are already installed but they are not correct for this package. Check that the correct key URLs are configured for this repository.
I've tried installing RPM Fusion keys and get an error saying they require "system >=15" (Fedora 15, I'm guessing?) and I don't recall ever adding these keys manually myself. Or if so, I can't recall what I did to get them in there.
I've read that some people can solve this by using a "--nogpgcheck" at the command line, but I don't know what the command line equivalent will be for this update. Ideally, I'd like to continue using the GUI updater since it offers all the info about the packages. So my hope would be to:
1. Identify the problem gpg keys
2. Install the right ones
3. Run the installer again and see everything work.

I'm running Fedora 11 (2.6.30.10-105.2.4.fc11.i686.PAE) 8 GB memory on a AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor, 4 core server I just built. The problem I have run into is any virtual machine that has >1024 MB memory assigned to it will not boot. As along as it has 1024 MB or less it boots fine. The symptom you see is a very quick message "Booting from hard disk" the screen then goes blank, you can't login through SSH, and can't ping the network address so I know it's not some crazy video problem hiding the boot process. The attachment are messages from a failed boot attempt.

I'm running some vm's in FC12 with kvm-qemu and using virt machine manager. I'd like to have some ports automatically forward on startup and be able to add redirections on the fly. Redirection on the fly is talked about here, but I am getting lost on what should be basic instructions.[URL]
As far as startup, In the past I just ran qemu from the cli and manually specified redirection with redir. I can't figure out how to do it with The virt machine manager which I am using to start my VM's now. I do not want the guests to see the host. From cli startup without virt machine manager, it looked like this: qemu -m 256 -hda vm.img -redir tcp:5555::80 -redir tcp:5556::445 &
