Fedora Servers :: Migrating To Another Machine?

Apr 17, 2009

I have Fedora Core 6 on a IBM X3400 System. It is live ftp server with Static IP.

Now can I move that server to a machine with Pentium D Dual Core, 1 GB DDR2 without having to install anything.

If I do need to install a new version, can I atleast move all System / Network Configuration from old to new server ?

Ubuntu Servers :: Migrating A Site From One VPS To Another

Jul 19, 2010

I'm migrating a site from one VPS to another, and I'm having trouble understanding what I need to do with DNS. I haven't even gotten to the nitty-gritty of it: I don't understand it at a very high level. My host sent me this email explaining what I need to do, and I don't even know what questions to ask.

Quote:

Your registrar has MyHost's nameservers listed for your domain name.

All DNS-related info for mysite.com and everything inside that zone is defined in your zone file which is currently on your VPS "myserver1" and is being rsynced to [our] servers.

I'm suggesting that if you don't want to spend any of your migration time setting up a DNS server then you may wish to just make the changes in that file, since that is the method that is currently working.

I've come up with two possible interpretations of this situation, and perhaps neither is correct.I need to set my new VPS to be its own nameserver, and have my registrar point mysite.com to my VPS. I need to set up a DNS server to somehow interact with MyHost's nameservers (something about a zone file). Do either/both of these sound plausible? I thought DNS made a server into a nameserver, is that not right?

Ubuntu Servers :: Loosing Uid And Gid Migrating From CentOs To 11.04?

May 22, 2011

I'm migrating a server form CentOs to Ubuntu 11.04. I migrated the users, moving the config files and gaining the access prompt for all the users just when I modified adduser.conf and login.defs, changing valid uid and gid to start from 500 instead of 1000. When I try to copy the files from old server to the new one, either with rsync or cp -br, the system set to 0 uid and gid. If I explore the mount point, connected with sshfs, I can see the correct configuration, either as names or as numeric data.

Ubuntu Servers :: Migrating From LVM To Normal Partitions - Boot Not Complete

Feb 20, 2010

I have an Ubuntu 9.10/64 Server configured with LVM in a 1Tb sata disk in my home server. For a simple server, LVM adds complexity if you need to recover your system, so I decided to migrate from LVM to normal partitions. I have another 1Tb disk to copy my system disk. In the backup disk, i have created same size partitions and trasfered files from /boot and root volumes with rsync, presenving perms etc... and excluding /dev /proc /sys etc... I have then modified /etc/fstab to mount new UUID's and reinstaled grub via live CD and chroot.

At this point, when I replace my system disk with backup one, the boot process start as usual, but when it starts loading services the boot process does not continue. The system is not "frozen". If I press intro, there is a line feed on screen. If I mount the backup disk in another system, there is nothing writed to /var/log/syslog or dmesg files during the boot process. I can change terminal with <alt>F2 but there is no login. In console, with backup disk I get:

In theory, would it be possible to open an ssh connection that reads and writes to a file, and then make a cgi script that writes commands to the file and formats the output to html?

Fedora Servers :: NX And Virtual Machine Manager

I have an F12 installation on which I have installed NoMachine's NX server. I can remote in nicely when needed (try to do as much as possible via SSH) while not having to boot into and stay on Gnome on the server and run VNC.I noted that when I try to start the Virtual Machine Manager from an NX session, I get an error that VMM is "unable to open a connection to the libvirt management daemon". libvirtd is running, however. And, when I startx on the server and try there, VMM works fine.Is this an inherent problem with the use of VMM, or something correctable?

Fedora Servers :: Importing XP Machine Fails

Oct 18, 2010

We are trying to consolidate some servers to run as virtual machines on our F13 host. After booting into SystemRescueCD, we take a dd of /dev/sda (we initially did a dd of sda1 before realizing our error)We transferred this image (EDI.img) to our F13 VM host. and created a new virtual machine using the graphical Virtual Machine Manager using "import an existing disk image" and the same EDI.img file as the storage volume.

Unable to boot, I've done much googling to find the registry entries of MigrateIDE.reg - which I've manually added to the image's registry via chntpw -e /mnt/windows/WINDOWS/system32/config/system.Another forum's posting advised to boot from the XP iso and allow this installation process to "repair" the existing installation. I'm still sitting at a blank screen with minimal CPU activity. Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to migrate a physical XP machine to be a virtual machine running under F13?

3. Used samba server configuration to setup the share and create the samba users
4. When I tried to connect from my windows machine I get the error that the server is not accessible, you might not have permission to use this network resource or I get the error "windows cannot access server, check spelling and try again.

Both computers can ping each other. I opened samba ports in the linux firewall and tried to connect again: same error Disabled firewall all together and have the same error. Here is the output from the testparm command

Fedora Servers :: Virtual Machine Manager Won't Allow Memory Allocation Over 1024

As along as it has 1024 MB or less it boots fine. The symptom you see is a very quick message "Booting from hard disk" the screen then goes blank, you can't login through SSH, and can't ping the network address so I know it's not some crazy video problem hiding the boot process. The attachment are messages from a failed boot attempt.

Fedora Installation :: Migrating Away From Gnome

Apr 13, 2011

I've been looking at Gnome 3 and the Gnome Shell and I don't like what I see. The Gnome devs are taking things in a direction I don't like, giving us new ways to do things that don't interest me and making them mandatory. AFAICT, in the long run there's no real way to configure things to work the way I've been doing things for the last fifteen years. This is not a rant, not (mostly) a complaint, merely an observation. Clearly, I'm not part of their target demographic and I doubt that I'd want to be under the circumstances.

To me, that means it's time for me to move on and try something different. After some careful research, I've migrated my laptop to XFCE and am very happy with it. Now, I'm about to do the same to my desktop. This leaves me with an interesting question: what's the best way to remove Gnome from my two machines without removing any support needed for various programs that I'm accustomed to using and expect to continue using?

Ubuntu Servers :: Multiple FTP Servers On One Machine?

May 20, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu Server 10.04 and have a secure (SSL/TLS) FTP server on it. However, I'd like to use this FTP server to update programs I made using Microsoft Visual Studio. Unfortunately, in Microsoft's infinite wisdom, secure FTP servers cannot be used. Rather than use an insecure FTP server, I want to set up my secure FTP server to be able to access whatever I need to on the machine, and then add an insecure FTP server that only has access to the directory where I put my update files. I am currently using vsftpd as my FTP server. Is there any way that I can set up two FTP servers on this single machine?

Fedora Networking :: Getting A Machine To Update Its Machine Name In The DNS ServerSounds Doesn't?

Feb 20, 2011

I have an issue with the manner in which Network Manager is configuring the network and short of ditching Network Manager I can see no solution. The issue : Getting a machine to update its machine name in the DNS serverSounds simple doesn't it I operate a FreeBSD based firewall / DHCP / DNS server, using a default Network Manager DHCP configuration the Fedora clients do not register their names with the DNS server when they obtain an address.

I have traced the communications with Wireshark and the Fedora clients are NOT supplying the PC's hostname as part of the exchange so this is NOT a DNS server configuration issue. If I uncheck the option 'Automatically obtain DNS information from provider' under the DHCP settings the Fedora clients DO register the hostname that is put into the Hostname (optional) databox. They do NOT however store the DNS server IP address or any other records defined by the DNS server.

Is there some hidden settings or is this a bug because it isn't acceptable 'DHCP' behaviour if it isn't possible to automatically set DNS server IP addresses and at the same time register the hostname during the DHCP negotiation. Before it is said I know I can use a fixed DNS IP address but am not prepared to long term, I am also not prepared to define the Fedora clients with a 'static' IP. I am similarly not interested in playing around with scripts or any other such 'frigs' to achieve what should be a standard activity - registering a host with DNS during the DHCP negotiation.
