Fedora Servers :: Change RAID On Fedora Startup?

Feb 2, 2009

Im having a hard time trying to change my raid configuration. Here is my situation:

A have two HDs that I configured in instalation time to work as raid squid proxy-cache. they are both 40GB. 40+40=80GB. So, I want to change it to two of 160GB. 160+160=320GB.

I have:
sdc1=40GB
sdd1=40GB

im adding / want:
sda1=160GB
sdb1=160GB

I want to remove the two 40GB and use only the two 160GB for my proxy. The thing is that when I remove the two 40GB, the system crashes at startup telling me that the raid cant be done then file system check fales too. Im wondering if there is a file a have to edit to change to point it to /dev/sda1 intead of /dev/sdc1 for example, so my system would start up looking for sda1(160GB) and sdb1(160GB) intead of sdc1(40GB) and sdd1(40GB).

Fedora Servers :: Upgrade Fedora Release Keeping Raid 1 And Lvm?

Nov 13, 2010

I hope this is the right section, it looks like though. I have a small nas ( via artigo a2000 ) with 2 sata hd 1tb each with raid 1 and lvm on top configured and working great.

sda1 and sdb1 ==> md0 raid1 for /boot
sda2 and sdb2 ==> md1 raid1 for swap
sda3 and sdb3 ==> md2 raid1 as physical volume then volume group and lvs on top ( / is a logial volume of these )

I wish to upgrade the current fedora 12 32bit installation I have on it doing a fresh install. But because I have a lot of data on md2 ( 600GB worth ) which I don't want to copy across somewhere else first, I need to know how ( i am pretty sure i can ) to mount md2 during the installation. This way I can use the data I already have on it.

Fedora Servers :: Installing 11 On RAID 10?

Should I be experiencing any issues with anything that any of you have come across? I did a checksum check on the iso files and those were good. Also, someone sent me this link..

Fedora X86/64bit :: Use Fedora / Linux Raid Program To Manage Raid Array?

Jun 24, 2009

I've tried to install Fedora 11, both 32 and 64 on my main machine.It could not install as it stops on the first install window. I've already filed a bug but really haven't seen any feed back yet.The bug has something to do with Anaconda and the Raid array but I really can't tell.

I have an Intel Board (see signature). I am running intel raid software under W7 currently.It works fine. But, I'm wondering, when I attempt to install F!!, is my current raid set-up causing problems? Do I need to get rid of the intel raid software and use a Fedor/Linux raid program to manage the raid array??

Fedora Servers :: Raid 0 Went Into Read Only Mode

Apr 16, 2011

I am using Fedora 14 64 bit with two 1T drives. There is a Raid 1 for the important information and I use a Raid 0 for cached files that can be generated on the fly. Yesterday my Raid 0 went into read only mode.

Here are a couple of tests:

What caused the Raid 0 drive from /dev/md1 to get removed? Is there a way to get it back to active sync?

I have tried:

But it can not open /dev/sda2: Device or resource busy.

Fedora Servers :: Remove RAID Flag From Disc?

Apr 17, 2011

I would like to mount a disc that was previously used in the Intel Software Matrix RAID array (fake-raid). If I try to mount it I get:

mount: /dev/sdd1 already mounted or tempb busy

I think my dmraid is refusing to mount it beause of some RAID "flag". I would like to get rid of it, but unfortunately I cant do that on my system (theres no such RAID):

[root@ox mnt]# dmraid -r /dev/sdd
ERROR: isw: Could not find disk /dev/sdd in the metadata
no raid disks and with names: "/dev/sdd"

There are several posts recommending to uninstall dmraid completely from the system. Isnt there smarter solution in removing such a flag?

Fedora Servers :: Setup RAID On DELL Server With F10 64Bit OS?

Jan 22, 2009

I have had no problem installing Fedora OS on any of my Dell servers prior to this post. Anyway, I wouldn't call this a problem but recently, we bought another DELL server with Quad Core, 4GB, etc... AND this model has 2 swappable SAS Harddrives.

I wouldn't call myself an expert but then again I am not a newbie too. However, I have never setup any RAID before and now I am forced to setup RAID1 on this server. So, in a way, I am a newbie in setting up RAID

Would someone please point me in the right direction as I have no idea what I am supposed to do to setup the RAID. FYI, I will be installing Fedora 10 64bit on this server. I would appreciate if you can start from the very beginning, ie. partitioning, formatting the harddrives during OS installation, etc..

Fedora Servers :: Convert A Running System To RAID Level 1?

Sep 30, 2009

I was recently requested to try and convert a running system to RAID level 1. I did not succeed in this task. However, I am still interested in accomplishing this task in a test environment.What I did was create a RAID device with a device missing e.g.

mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 missing /dev/sdb2

Once the RAID was up and running I created the /etc/mdadm.conf file so that it would activate the RAID device on boot. Once the device was created I copied all the data from the running root filesystem to the /dev/md0 device. The only directory that I didn't copy was the /proc directory. When I rebooted the machine I had a kernel panic and the system couldn't find /dev/root. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could provide some information/tips regarding the problem.

Fedora Servers :: RAID 6-like Setup With Dissimilar Disk Sizes?

Jun 7, 2010

I'm looking to set up a bit of a home server, and am wondering about storage. What I'd like is something like RAID 6, which has good redundancy built-in, but with this being a home server, I'd prefer to start a little smaller and leave room to build it up in future. I'd been looking at commercial products like the 'drobo', which seems fairly ideal, but I'd really like to see if I can do it myself. I understand that throwing the RAID into an LVM will allow for some expansion, but the last time I checked, most RAID setups called for the same sized disks, or at least limited the array by the size of the smallest disk present.

What I'd like is the ability to build a basic framework with a few cheap disks, and then as things start filling up, to be able to add larger ones (perhaps eventually pulling out smaller ones as though they'd failed and replacing them with big ones)

Fedora Servers :: Recovering From Software RAID Failure (controller Died)

Jan 3, 2009

I had a RAID1 'device' build on two physical partitions on two drives. One of the disk controllers died and software RAID did the job - now I am working on the degraded array.

Now I want to put the old disk (sdb) back, and I am not sure what will happen. Both disks have 'raid auto' partitions. And sdb file structure from before of the failure. The raid code will find inconsistency between both partitions. What will it decide? Will it start coping from the currently running system (sda) all the data to the old one (sdb) at the boot time, as I wish?

I don't want to it to write from the old one to the new one, as some months passed and lots of changes happened to the data.

Ubuntu Servers :: RAID-5 Recovery (spare/active) / Degraded And Can't Create Raid ,auto Stop Raid [md1]?

Feb 1, 2011

Could any RAID gurus kindly assist me on the following RAID-5 issue?I have an mdadm-created RAID5 array consisting of 4 discs. One of the discs was dropping out, so I decided to replace it. Somehow, this went terribly wrong and I succeeded in marking two of the drives as faulty, and the re-adding them as spare.

Now the array is (logically) no longer able to start:

mdadm: Not enough devices to start the array.Degraded and can't create RAID ,auto stop RAID [md1]

I was able to examine the disks though:

Code:
root@127.0.0.1:/etc# mdadm --examine /dev/sdb2
/dev/sdb2:
Magic : a92b4efc
Version : 00.90.00
code....

Code:
mdadm --create --assume-clean --level=5 --raid-devices=4 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdc2 /dev/sdd2
As I don't want to ruin the maybe small chance I have left to rescue my data, I would like to hear the input of this wise community.

Ubuntu Servers :: Software Raid 5 Migration With A File System Change?

Jan 26, 2010

Everything is software raid using mdadm
3x320GB HDDs in raid 5
1x1.5TB HDDs in raid 1(don't ask)

The above are LVMed to create ~2TB of combined space using reiserFS. I'm not really happy with the performance so I'm moving to XFS while I'm at it.

I FINALLY got around to ordering 2 more 1.5TB HDDs. The end goal is.3x1.5TB HDD in raid 5 formatted to XFS for a total of around ~2.7GB of space.

1. Create raid 5 array using the new 2x1.5TB HDDs.(yes, very pointless at the moment, please continue reading)

2. Copy data from 2TB LVM to the new ~2.7TB raid 5. (will mdadm let me be an idiot? It apparently let me force create a single drive in a raid 1)

3. Move the original 1.5TB over to the new raid 5 to actually provide redundancy.

Ubuntu Servers :: Does Replacing Failed Disk On Raid5 Change Any Data On Other Disks In Raid

Jan 9, 2011

I've got a raid5 array of 4 disks with ubuntu 8.04 runing on it that is currently still working:

/dev/sda
/dev/sdb
/dev/sdc
/dev/sdd

Smartmontools for /dev/sdc tell that there are 9 sectors pending for reallocation:

Code:

197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 9
198 Offline_Uncorrectable 0x0010 100 100 000 Old_age Offline - 9
And /dev/sdd has increasing number of reallocated sectors (about 1 every couple of minutes):

Code:

5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 100 100 036 Pre-fail Always - 1735
/dev/sdc has failed a coulple of times this week (but I have always sucessfully readded it to raid5) . But the increasing number of reallocated sectores on /dev/sdd concerns me even more.

I'm affraid that during removal of /dev/sdd and adding new /devs/sdd disk, raid might fall appart. That's why I would try to do it in Ubuntu Live CD:If the raid falls appart (/dev/sdc fails) during the readding of new /dev/sdd disk, I might still remove the new /dev/sdd and return the previous one and assemble the raid with:

/dev/sda
/dev/sdb
/dev/sdd (old one that was previously removed)

Does assembling Raid in Ubuntu Live and adding new disk for /dev/sdd write anything on /dev/sda, /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc in the process of adding /dev/sdd into raid5?

Ubuntu :: Software Raid Does Not Mount On Startup?

Jul 18, 2010

I am running 64bit ubuntu 10.04. I have an nvidia software raid formatted with ntfs. The raid only mounts about every 10-15 boots. It is completely random on when it will mount. I even have included "force" in the ntfs-3g mount options.

Also, possibly related, many times ubuntu will not even load unless I load windows first and then restart. I run Ubuntu on its own partition using ext3, so this makes no sense.... It makes me scared to run a computer with only Ubuntu because it seems Ubuntu cannot load unless window loads before it! I could understand this if Ubuntu was formatted as NTFS, but the only NTFS drive Ubuntu sees is the raid, which is not mounting anyways, so why is it dropping to the command prompt?

Fedora :: Downgrade F12 To F10 - RAID And LVM

Jun 30, 2010

As I have not been able to resolve the problems with BackupPC after the upgrade (see post [URL]) it seems that my best option is to restore my system to the state when it was working OK and then do an upgrade to F13. I did a clean install when I upgraded to F12 and took the opportunity to reconfigure the disks to include some new drives into the RAID and LVM.

This means that the disks and partitions are not the same as when I was last running F10. I have the dumps taken at that time so I propose to install F10 from the DVD into the new structure and then restore the partitions from the dumps under single user. The new partitions are formatted ext4 and previously they were ext3, not sure if F10 supported ext4.

I know that there will be some directories and files which I must not overwrite:
/etc/fstab
/dev
some parts of /boot
I can do this with restore -i.

Fedora Installation :: 12 Won't Find RAID?

Nov 18, 2009

I just tried to install Fedora 12 x_64 on a machine that is currently running Fedora 11 x_64. It's a new machine for use as a server and is running a Phenom II 4 core on a gigabyte M/B - 4GB RAM, onboard ATI graphics, an Adaptec 5405Z RAID Controller that is in the 16 lane PCIe slot, and 3 SSD SATA dives in a RAID 0.I installed Fedora 11 x_64 on this machine just last week and it went perfectly smooth. The install recognized the video hardware, controller card and the RAID, installed correctly, boots fine, runs solid.When I attempt to install Fedora 12 x_64 on the same machine, it does NOT recognize the controller, nor the RAID and doesn't seem to like the video hardware. I stuck on a floppy drive and made a driver disk from the Adaptec provided Linux drivers, but the install fails to mount the floppy when I try to add the driver during boot from DVD - although it tries. (It's possible that my floppy drive and/or disks are too old to be useful. Seriously, loading drivers from a FLOPPY? Most computers don't even HAVE one any more.Sheesh...). The video also seems squirrelly and works better using the "simple" video drivers.

Anyone got any clues on this. It seems odd that the newer version works less well than the previous one.Maybe I'll try a different .iso - CDs or a live version or something just to check - and maybe try an install on a different machine. Yes, I put the install DVD through the self-test and it passed. I have tried 2 different copies and both fail.LATER - tried with live CD - boots OK, splash screen is OK, after bootup finishes it looks like maybe it's trying to start a different video driver - then the screen goes black and stays that way. Tomorrow I may stick in a discrete video card and see if that makes any difference.

Still Later: I have tried discrete video card, tried moving the RAID controller to the 4 lane slot, tried to install a driver from floppy (still no go) and have tried noprobe on boot command line. Although the "noprobe" got the video to keep going (albeit at a low resolution) it STILL refuses to see the RAID controller. The LED indicators on the RAID card SEEM to be indicating that the card locks up during Fedora 12 boot, but I haven't checked on that just yet. Fedora 11 continues to boot and run fine on the same machine - I'm running it right now. as I type this.Later yet: Ubuntu 9.10 86_64 that was released a couple weeks ago DOES, IN FACT see the controller and the RAID when I run the install process. Looks like Fedora 12 is badly broken after all. (Damn those even numbered releases anyway.....{;>D)=) Guess I'm going to be "stuck" with either Ubuntu or Fedora 11 unless a solution appears pretty soon. I have sent an inquiry to Adaptec, but I'm guessing they are going to say, "we don't support Fedora linux except Fedora 5 and Fedora 6" as those are the only drivers they seem to have available

Friday 11/20 - I've attached a SATA drive to the same computer. By using the "basic" video driver from the install DVD I am able to install F12 to the SATA drive without issue - it installs fine, boots fine, runs fine. However, it still will NOT see the RAID controller. I tried installing the driver .rpm from the disk that came from Adaptec, but the vanilla linux driver doesn't seem to be effective. So far, Fedora 12 continues to be a big FAIL! as far as this particular machine goes.
