Fedora Servers :: Create Exact Backup / Copy?

I want to backup my server that godaddy is hosting and install it on my linux system at home. In other words I want to have a clone of my server at home, like what timemachine does on mac (carries files and programs from one mac to another to make a clone).
How do I do that? I create an image file an iso file? or what? How?
I want to do this incase my server burns up over there. I don't want to reinstall all the programs and do the set ups manually again.

I currently have been using 10.10 on my new netbook. I've been an Arch user for a while, but recently come back to ubuntu for my new netbook since it's a lot simpler to get working from installation, imo (oh and I'm quite impressed with how far Ubuntu's come in the last year since I used it ). Anyway, I want to upgrade to a 128GB SSD but I also want to keep the current setup I'm running on my current 320GB HDD. Is there any good HDD imaging tools for Ubuntu/Linux (that's relatively easy to use), as I've never done this before?
Also, bear in mind, my current HDD has a three partition setup. 4.1GB swap, 8.2GB ext3 (/ directory), 308GB ext3 (/home directory) respectively. And also an additional question: As the new SSD has only 128GB (compared to my current 320GB), is it possible to shrink my /home partition but keep the other partitions at their current sizes? (as my /home partition has probably over 128GB free space anyway) Oh and also, how big do Ubuntu root partitions have to be in general? I think my 8.2GB / is a bit of an overkill, is it not?

Best way to do a scheduled backup of a server (PowerPC, Ubuntu 9.10), when an exact copy of the linux partition would be made on a disk of the same size? It seems there are several solution, but I have problems choosing the best.

Attempting to create a backup script to copy files from one file system to a remote file system.
When I try this I get:

I am in the process of cloning a HD. Before I wipe the original drive I was wondering if there was a tool to create something like a md5 hash of the entire drive to verify that I have an exact copy. It does not necessarily have to be an md5 hash and any command line BASH options would work for me as well.

I'm trying to clone a 2GB USB memory stick to another stick just like it (same size and brand). The src drive has three partitions, one fat, one ext2 and one encrypted (in that order). It also has an mbr. I create the clone using the following command:
dd if=/dev/xxx of=/dev/xxx bs=512k conv=noerror,notrunc
Once it's done the mbr, the ext2 and the encrypted partitions seem fine, but the fat one is slightly modified on the clone. Here is a hex dump of the (broken) clones fat partition followed by a dump of the original partition.

I did a search and came up with many different opinions and suggestions, and I could not find any similar threads for this (if there is I must apoligize in advance and did not look hard enough). I am trying to create a backup schedule for client computers and servers; and I would like your opinion on what I came up with. Here is network infrastrusture setup:
16 client computers
6 serevrs
- Primary and Secondary Web Server (RAID 1)
- Primary and Secondary Domain Controller (RAID 1)
- File/Print Server (RAID 5)
- Backup Server (RAID 1) with USB 2.0 1TB External Drive
Of course I will evetually upgrade to Tape Drives, but I am saving up for that. Anyways I want to backup ALL client computers, Primary Web and DC server, and File/Print Server. This will be done (of course) on the Backup Server) Here is the schedule:

Create a copy of the file above and call it commands.sorted. Use the vi command to manually sort this file. I.e. use yy to copy a line, P or p to paste a line, and dd delete a line. Order the commands with the two lines starting with double quotes first. Then list the rest of the command in alphabetical order.
Anyone have any ideas what he's talking about? Can I copy a file and rename it at the same time while copying it to the same exact directory again? Now sure what the two lines things means either. I have an email out to him but it usually takes a long time for him to answer me. I got alot of work to do so everytime I get hung up it kills me.

I want to copy all files with the name XYZ* into one folder. The problem is that the files are in different subfolders and that not even the depth of the folder structure is the same for all files. Luckily, at least each file has a unique name.
Of course, I thought about the cp command but I guess the depth of the folder structure needs to be the same for this to work.

I have installed Fedora 12 and am running it successfully. I have made a few stupid mistakes a couple of times and have had to start from scratch with a complete OS reinstall on a few occassions. I am happy with my current setup and am wondering is it possible for me to create a Live CD that has my exact configuration so that If I make a mess again, I can just stick in my backup DVD/CD's and roll back to my happy (Known to ne Working) sate. Something like System restore on Windows...... Is this possible?

Have been playing with Centos 5 and finally got it installed and have done most of the updates. Before I proceed much further it would be nice if I could create a backup/install disc of how it is now. No Data,just the setup and software used etc.Have a dvd rw on the server.I recall mondo rescue installed years ago on a linux server we used.

I'm trying to make an exact duplicate of just a folder (about 15 gigs) and I want to do it a "slow method" (basically I want to avoid any possibility of corrupting files. Is there something more useful than cp, I've been using that and I've noticed at least a few files have gotten corrupted.

I recently bought an host to have a personal website and would like to create a bash script to create make a mirror copy of it and then add it to crontab to run once a week. Essentially what I want to do is to get the website by using wget -m ftp://user***@ftp.host/mydir
Once this is done I'd like to have everything in an archive called mysite.date.tar.7z I've no experience at all of bash scripting but I guess this should be an easy task? How to make the user and password not visible ? Is there any other option better than wget? (maybe rsync it works better?)

I have a scheduled backup to run on our server at work and since the 7/12/09 it has be making 592k files instead of 10Mb files, In mysql-admin (the GUI tool) I have a stored connection for the user 'backup', the user has select and lock rights on the databases being backed up. I have a backup profile called 'backup_regular' and in the third tab along its scheduled to backup at 2 in the morning every week day. If I look at one of the small backup files generated I see the following:

It seems that MySQL can open and write to the file fine, it just can't dump

Does anyone know of any decent enterprise level backup solutions for Linux? I need to backup a few servers and a bunch of desktops onto one backup server. Using rsync/tar.gz won't cut it. I need like bi-monthly full HDD backups, and things such as that, with a nice GUI interface to add/remove systems from the backup list. I need basically something similar to CommVault or Veritas. Veritas I've used before but it has its issues, such as leaving 30GB cache files. CommVault, I have no idea how much it is, and if it supports backing up to a hard drive rather than tape.

I'm going to be launching my website soon, and I found a company to host it on one of their dedicated servers. I think I'm going to go with fedora as to OS, and well my problem is I'm having trouble finding a company to backup up my files, that both supports fedora and well is reasonably priced.

I have several machines that I'd like to backup various folders through the linux box onto DVD-RW media.I want to keep log files of what was written and when to dvd on one machine and have it automagically assign a unique serial number that I can print on the dvd in case I need to recover.I'd like a user friendly UI that I can point and click to schedule the backup and it's type.Is there a good Fedora backup application (read easy to use/understand and configure) I can use to backup machines across a network and across multiple dvd's (if needed)? The host machine is a F11 box.These are a mix of Win server 2008, win 7, win XP and several Fedora boxes.Speaking of dvd media is this a good idea and how many erase/write cycles are they good for?

I need to install a backup server in my work environment.We have a Windows 2008 server and an old DELL PowerEdge 1750 server that has no OS on it yet.I would like to install Fedora on it and then backup the Windows Server data on the Fedora server using rsync or something else to do the backups.Do you think it's a good idea ? If not what would you use to backup the Windows server data, preferably on a linux system.

I want to backup my apache website using tar. I want to make sure all the permissions and such stay the same so that if I restore a website, it's ready to go exactly as it had been.I am using the following command and would like to know if there is anything else I should neeed to do?
tar --xattrs cvzf backup.tgz /path-to-webserver-files
Now my other question is since tar doesn't store absolute paths, when I run the restore I have to be in the root directory? In another words if I run the command in a user directory will tar do something retarded like encode the paths as ../path-to-webserver or will it just be path-to-webserver so that when I run the restore from the / folder it will automatically go into the right place?

I am attempting to copy files from one server to an external USB drive on a second server. Both servers are running custom RedHat Linux, kernel 2.6. Both are setup as Check Point SecurePlatform (one is a log server and the other a management server). I am trying to archive files from one (HP DL380 G5) to the second (HP DL380 G6). I am not able to archive directly to the external usb drive when connected to the HP DL380 G5 (data gets corrupted and switches to read-only access). The external USB drive has no issues when connected to the HP DL380 G6 server, thus my reason for trying to copy the files across servers.
When I attempt to use scp to copy files between the server, I am prompted for the password. Once entered the debug shows the authentication is successful, but then no files are copied (see log below). I have tried searching for potential answers, but none have panned out. Unfortunately I can't yet post the actual scp debug log output as some of the text is viewed as a URL and not yet allowed for me. I have changed all the atsign symbols to '(a)' to avoid the URL inference.

As root, I use crontab to run mirrordir to backup directories. Everything gets copied over properly, but owner information isn't preserved and root is the owner of all the backed up files. I can deal with that, but crontab reports tons and tons of chown/chgrp errors for mirrordir every time I do back ups--which is every day--and the multiple emails to root of thousands of chown/chgrp errors is very annoying. The error is "Operation not permitted," but that doesn't make sense to me because the job runs as root (right?) and clearly the job is permitted to create the backup files, so why would it fail to chown and chgrp?
I've had the exact same setup on another server for years, and crontab has always run mirrordir without error. Any suggestions how to clear the errors on my new server?

I export a folder via NFS service.I able to mount this NFS share in another Linux machine.The folder has many files.The ownership of these files aren't belong to single user. There are more than 10 different users' files in the folder.I am trying to migrate all these files to another folder. When I use "cp -a", the new files' ownership are all reset to the logon user.
Both NFS server and client machine has exactly same copy of users/groups as these 2 machines refer to same LDAP directory service. When use "ls -al" to list the NFS share in client, I can see the files ownership is exactly the same as the NFS server.Is that possible to preserve the ownership of files while doing such migration? The "cp -a" fail to deliver the job.

I back up all my digital photos to a couple of places. I've been using the cp command, but--given the personal value--have started to wonder if there's a more reliable way. I'm no stranger to Linux, Bash, Perl, etc., so I could write something to copy and compare md5 hashes, but I was wondering if something already exists (reinvention, wheels and what-not).
Most of my googling for copy and (verify|valid|check|hash|confirm) turns up rsync. However, as far as I can tell, rsync only uses hashes to see if a file needs to be updated. It doesn't perform a hash comparison afterward. For this use, specifically, the files are binary and typically 8-10MB.

Every time I install ubuntu I have to reinstall all the software from the software center and so. Now I already installed all software I need for this moment. Is there a way to take source files of those (installed) packages and save them some where else in order to reinstall them if i needed next time without need to INTERNET connection ???
Another question I wanna know about: How can I take a backup of my system as whole in order to get back to it if some problem happened. I used to use Acronis True Image and its alternatives to make a disk image. Is there is some thing similar in linux ?? is there better options ??
