Debian Installation :: Which Kernel On The Mirror Site Should Use

Feb 13, 2010

I am just a newbie to debian/linux, and want to install debian lenny 5.0 with grub4dos. I have downloaded debian-5.03-CD-1-AMD64.iso and have read the installation-guide.pdf about debian 5.0 lenny. Then Go to "ftp2.de.debian.org/debian/dists/Debian5.0.4/main/installer-amd64" There are FOUR directories:

Ubuntu Installation :: 8.04.3 LTS Server - Cannot Find Any Mirror Site

Jan 27, 2010

My requirement is to install Ubuntu SERVER 8.04.3 LTS on a Dell 2550 machine.

Problem.
- Bug in ubuntu (desktop and server) stopping CD install on this hardware platform. It hangs half way through and is something to do with the SCSI CD drive. Lots of stuff on the net about it, but no fix as far as I can see, at least nothing that works for me.

- So, tried boot off CD and then used F6 and added a cdrom-detect/try-usb=true line together with putting a USB with the ISO burnt onto it in the USB port. Still hangs during install (can't see USB perhaps? USB not correctly burnt? Tried many many times though, and eventually gave up at 2am)

- Next tried PXE boot. Now getting somewhere. Ok I installed tftpd32 on my windows machine, and copied the netboot files from the ubuntu site to the tftpd directory. (I dont think this will help me install the server, just the desktop??) Anyway, it booted from the win tftp machine (wahey!), and went through install, BUT when it tried to find the mirror site it couldnt. In fact it couldnt find ANY mirror site. (Internet access from windows and all other PCs on the network is working fine).

So, to ensure I am installing the SERVER version, and to use PXE boot, and to NOT use the internet to download the files (i.e. load them up locally somewhere), what do I do?

Ubuntu Servers :: What Software Can Use So Can FTP My Site's Files To / Var / Www Directory?

May 31, 2011

Does anyone have any recommendations on what software I can use so I can FTP my site's files to the /var/www directory? I tried using vsftpd, but the software was terribly difficult to configure correctly. I tried telling it to make everything that was uploaded have "704" permissions, but everything I uploaded had strange permissions on them. When I used to use professional Linux hosting, that was never a problem, so I'd like a simple FTP server software so I can easily manage my site from a remote location.

Fedora Servers :: Mirror URL For Local Repository

Jan 30, 2009

I have been looking into setting up a local repository for updates etc as we have an increasing number of fedora clients/servers. Searching the web I found multiple how-to's on how to accomplish this little project. One thing that bothers me is that each how-to seems to refer to a "static URL" mirror for rsync to get the rpms.

Fedora Servers :: Site Works On F9 But Not F12?

May 3, 2010

I am running a website using a Fedora 9/ Apache 2 platform. I have added two new disks to the same server and installed Fedora 12 (I don't have both sets of disks in at the same time either the old ones with F9 or the new ones with F12). Having copied 'all' of the settings over to the new F12 installation it only serves pages on localhost not on the external IP as the F9 version does.

I have now installed F9 (got rid of F12) onto the new disks and copied the settings from the old installation onto the new disks and the server once again serves up pages. The only hardware changes are the disks being popped in and out between restarts as I swap between the old and new installations.

Hopefully there is some obvious (to someone) difference between F12 and F9 that would account for this.I have messed with settings for a while now and am almost at the point of paying for RHEL to see if that does the job.

Ubuntu Servers :: Access Web Site When Site's Domain Name / User's Local Server's Domain Name Are Same

Feb 18, 2010

In the office there is a local network with samba+openldap PDC. The local domain name is company.net. The company desided to create a corporate Website on a remote hosting and desided that the site's domain should be company.net which is same as local network's domain name. So now it is not possible to reach that corporate website from within the company's local network because, as I guess, bind9 which is installed on above menioned PDC looks for company.net on a local webserver. Is there a possibility to let people from this local network browse the remote site?

Fedora Servers :: Way To Specify Privoxy To Not Filter Specific Site

Nov 7, 2009

I am running a basic squid + privoxy combo for web caching/filtering proxy and it works fine. I'm basically running a stock config w/ a few minor edits to allow the relevant hosts access etc.now I am trying to find an easy way to specify privoxy to not filter a specific site (which it breaks). I have tried wading through the privoxy manual + google but I find the config file incredibly complicated. Are there any experts out there who can tell me: what is the easiest way to tell privoxy to 'pass through' a specific website?

Ubuntu :: Make A Mirror Image 'clone' Of Flash To Another?

Nov 6, 2010

In the end, with much gnashing of my teeth, I just started over and created a new 4gb flash. And, as one helper told me, it was truly easier a second go around. Not quick, mind you, but easier Now that I've got my flash somewhat stable, I'd like to know how to make a mirror image 'clone' of this flash to another, just like it. Between my Broadcom drivers, nVidea drivers, updates and flash/java, I've gotten pretty protective of this little flash drive! I've head 'dd' will do it, but, as a newb, is their an application or tool that might make the job easier.

Without unetbootin, how should we do to make a pendrive iso-cd/debian-503-i386-netinst-like bootable?

Ubuntu Servers :: How TO Upgrade Local Apt-mirror?

May 17, 2010

After digging around trying to figure out how to upgrade my local apt-mirror to 10.04, I figured I would share it here so anyone else who does this, can do it with ease. It requires a few steps, and editing a couple files, but the process is relatively painless. This assumes you have an apt-mirror already running on your server. Also it assumes you're using /var/www/ubuntu as your root where all your packages are stored.

The first step is to visit http://changelogs.ubuntu.com and download the meta-release packages. Create a new directory, /var/www/ubuntu/upgrade, and drop the files there. On the client's end, a single file needs to be edited, /etc/update-manager/meta-release. Change the URI's in that file to the URI of your apt-mirror and run your update manager. Your upgrade will start, only asking if you want to change your paths in your sources.list. Agree to it, and the packages will download and configure.

is there a way to move distributions in a local mirror? apt-move seems only capable of rearranging the packages in /var/cache/apt/archives/ .

Ubuntu Servers :: Ext USB Disk As Tertiary Offsite Mirror?

Jul 28, 2011

Looking for a few pointers here.I am trying to automate the adding and removal of two external usb disks to my linux raid mirror (md) that I use for an offsite copy of my data. This is what I currently do.Server has 2 x 500 gb internal disks setup with linux raid 1. (md)I connect 1 of the external usb disks, add it as a secondary mirror to the main array. After it rebuilds, I remove it from the array and take it home.I have two of these external drives so one of them is always offsite, and the other is either being rebuilt, or connected as a secondary mirror. At the moment, this involves running commands manually. I cannot seem to figure out how to automatically add these disks from and to the array with a script. It seems that every time it rebuilds on the external disk, it gives it a new UUID.
