Installed Server 11.04 Beta 2/i386 on one of my HP DL/380 G3's. Install went fine, until first boot.Then the monitor showed the "not supported display mode".No GUI installed.Machine is up, as I can ssh into it just fine.. Not that I really need a console anyway..I know this has to do with Grub's display mode.. but it's apparently not detecting correctly.
View 1 RepliesI've just tried to install X on my new debian system which had a nasty side effect.
I can see the bootcycle up to "Waiting for /dev to be fully populated." and then the screen switches into a display mode unsupported by my display. I've had problems like this many times before because the display returns it's capabable of resolutions like 2048x1536, which it just isnt. I've had to disable autodetection whenever using this display. One thing to note thought is that it's NOT X that's messing up the display. It's setting the wrong display mode even before the filesystems are mounted. And I've already uninstalled X with no change either. Also recovery(single user) mode has no proper display output either.
what is setting my display to the wrong mode?
I'd like to report an issue I've had with Ubuntu server ISO. I downloaded ubuntu-9.10-server-i386.iso by HTTP on ubuntu's website and burned it on a CD. It doesn't work well. I got an error in udevadm sys/devices/pci0000 etc. it was a problem with the hardware, but it seems that it's the ISO that is corrupted. I checked the MD5 checksum and it's not good. Then I download the same ISO a second time (by HTTP) and same problem.
So it seems to me that the ubuntu-9.10-server-i386.iso that we can download by HTTP is not the same as the torrent one. Maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, if I'm right I hope this information will be useful for administrators.

But when it came to restarting my computer to finish the install, it would not display anything and just displayed "Mode Not Supported" on my screen (Samsung LE26R87). I did a bit of looking around and tried to see if I could find anything to help, but as I'm new to Ubuntu I could not find anything which I could understand.

After coming home one evening I found my server was turned off. My suspicions lead me to believe we had a storm and the power went off, then the UPS went off and finally at that point the server went off too. I think my server was set to allow security updates. After it turned of and restarted it seems it made a change to Grub and upgraded it to Grub2. In doing so I now get the following message:
Error 13: Invalid or un supported executable format

i started to look into upgrading my LTS ubuntu server instances to Lucid. one the notable things that i have discovered is the lack of support for Webmin; it seems that Debian is no longer supporting packages required by Webmin. But it also appears that ubuntu team believes that Webmin may actually cause problems as it works in a different way than that presumed by Ubuntu. so i am now left with no way to manage my 10+ instances of ubuntu server that i used for studying and research. it seems that i am left with cluster-ssh as an alternative. but are there other alternatives, ideally similar to webmin?

If I start for instance firefox via ssh from my laptop to have the browser showing up on the screen attached to the computer I ssh to? The computer i ssh to is better in handling graphics so I want to connect it to the TV and use my laptop as remote-control.

I use ubuntu server as a virtualbox instance, bridged networking enabled. if the server would display the IP with which I can connect to it after boot. In that way I don't have to login as root and run ifconfig.

"The display server has restarted 6 times in the past 90 seconds. This indicates that something bad is happening."
I want to display the associated host name with each address.
I've found the /var/lib/dhcp3/dhcpd.leases file, but it appears to have an entry for every time a lease was issued so it's hard to tell which ones are currently active.
I just performed a fresh install of 11.04 Server. The installation went smoothly and as expected. As soon as I leave the BIOS and Ubuntu boots, however, I lose my display (my monitor says "Cannot display this video mode"). I am able to ssh into the machine just fine, so I know it is booting up fine; I just don't have a local console.
Other threads related to this topic suggest adding something like "vga=771" to the boot options in grub/menu.lst, but I don't see that file anywhere in my 11.04 server install. Where can I configure display settings now?

Clean install of 10.04 Server 32 bit.Only services OpenSSH Server and Print Server.Machine boots and can be accessed through ssh.Virtual terminals (cntl-alt-1,2,3,4,... do not result in video to the monitor (no sync) or a display.If I type blind, I can log in, ssh back to my other machine, and create a file. So the virtual terminal is there and listening to the keyboard and running, just not creating a display.
This machine has been working fine with 08.10 for quite time up until yesterday, so I don't believe it is a hardware problem.Any ideas why the video on the virtual terminals would not work?
Is there a way to select a second installed OS on a home server system without display and keyboard? I am putting together a home server (for mail, storage, media streaming) using an Atom-based Ubuntu Server 10.04 on a 4 GB intern flash drive and 2 hard drives for data storage, but no display or keyboard. I want to make periodic full backups of the system (flash) disk and use a second OS (installed on a partition on the hard drive) with a graphical interface (e.g. Xbuntu or PartImage) for maintenance purposes. I can connect remotely (from a Win7 or a Linux computer) to the X-display once the second system is running.
a) how can the second OS be booted on this server without keyboard? Is there a way to tell Grub2 to look at some hardware switch (or file) for the menu selection? The board has a serial and parallel port so I could wire up a switch to some pin of one of these. Also external USB connectors are available on front and back. Or can Grub2 read its default OS choise from some simple file, easily to change from a shell command of the eBox webbased system control internface?
b) I assume the second OS is needed to make a complete backup of the server OS on the flash disk. Can the backup be automated? (i.e. switch to second OS, backup, reboot first OS)
I am using Cygwin and Xming server to bring back the display from Linux server to a Windows machine.
I am following the below steps :-
1.Close down all X Servers
2.Run XMing - XLaunch
3.Select Multiple windows
4.Select Start no clients
5.Tick No Access Control box
6.Click Finish
7.X Server starts and you should see icon in tray
8.Run Putty/SSH in Cygwin
9.SSH to server you want to connect to
10.Enter: export DISPLAY=192.168.0.1:0.0 (replace 192.168.0.1 with your IP)
11.Run dbca.
On using similar steps I can bring back the display from some Linux servers, but not from others, can you please let me know what the problem is and what things I need to verify. I am not getting any error, some of the last lines from the message in the log states :-

When i open the Browser FireFox and enter the URL http://localhost/TemplateSystemCore/bin/index.php no PHP Errors will be displayed. If i do Right Click View Source Code it is total empty.
I am using Netbeans to edit a PHP Project. The Project is located in /home/martin/NetBeansProjects/TemplateSystemCore btw. /home/martin/NetBeansProjects/TemplateSystemCore/bin
The Project is usein a .htaccess file with Rewrite Rules.
I edited the php.ini and set all display errors to On.
I also edided the http.conf and set display errors On. But nothing helped. Have anyone a Idea why my Brwoser isnt printing any PHP Errors? At least a <html> Tag should be on the Source Code. But its also empty.

I'm new to Ubuntu and I'm remote from the server. I'm setting up an Ubuntu server 10.04 x64. My intention is to load Oracle 11g, however I know I will need to be able to export an X display back to my desktop (Solaris) to run the Oracle installer. What do I need to load to get X working enough to export the display back to myself. I need to provide additional information. Since I'm new I may not have adequately covered what's needed.
View 4 Replies View Relatedtrying to set up a very minimal X on my 10.04 64 bit version of Ubuntu running nothing but Open SSH and acting as a firewall/router, making a PPP connection. The reason, is that I want to set up KVM/Qemu and run a virtual machine. The virtual machine will have a graphical environment and will be connected to my TV so that I can watch movies, stream TV etc. using it. So far, I have done the following:
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-core miwm
When I try to run miwm the error message is:
(null): can't open display.
I have no DISPLAY variable set, but even when I set one myself using export DISPLAY=:0.0 it makes no difference.

It has multiple control files and want to know which file works best with ubuntu server. View 2 Replies View RelatedHi I am new to ubuntu and am having major problems setting my displays up. my setup is a hd TV to the Left of my pc monitor, i have managed to configure catalyst to let me have a main display with the second display being an extension of the first, the problem is i cannot seem to swap my primary display, at the minute my HDTV has all the taskbars and everything on it while my pc monitor is just a blank background, i would like it so i could start a film playing for my children, then drag it across to the HDTV while i can still use my pc in the background.
