View 1 RepliesEver need to provide access to multiple PC's and did not have a router only a hub. Maybe this isn't original thinking, but then again maybe you didn't think of doing it this way (which i am sure there are many ways to do it) So I have 2 Ubuntu Servers, 1 Windows Box and a Hub - All 3 with internet access off of single ip and single Ethernet port.
While searching for a backup method today I came across Clonezilla. I was wondering if this was the right thing for me and since I needed to backup my roommates PC for a reformat and install of Windows I decided I would give it a try, but only if it would work. I didn't want the hassle of going into the main part of the house and finding out what cord was what as there is a cable modem connected into a switch (4 static IP's with internet) and one port of the switch hooked to a router) Anyways, didn't work he was on the router I was on the switch)
But this got me thinking. When I setup my server to do this, during one of the setup scripts it said it was setting up Internet access for client machines and that it was assigning them IP addresses threw a DHCP server that it had installed.
So, I dug up the hub connected the internet cable to hub up link and Server 1 on port 1 Server 2 on port 2 and Windows on port 3 The main server gets the internet provided IP address and routes it to the hub via a virtual interface. Server 2 is configured for DHCP and the windows box, It was set to get info automatically but it didn't fill the DNS info so I had to manually do that (just a heads up) I decided to use OpenDNS Servers (208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220) but im sure putting in the gateway IP address would have worked too.
So, by now if you need this I am sure you are excited and want to get to it. Like i said there are probably other ways of doing it, ways that don't involve you installing clonezilla and DRBL, maybe even just DRBL is needed, maybe one of them installed whats needed as a dependency- all I know is it works, if you know - elaborate so people know, but hey- this way not only do you have internet access on all PC's you can deploy custom images to them as well.
I am wanting to setup an office network consisting of three computers and one server. We already have the equipment ready with Vista Business pre-installed on the computers. I want to be able to create a network which allows users to use any machine as this will reduce downtime should a machine break. Also I would like user's files to be held centrally on the server which makes backups easier.
The most important element here is data backup. As like most businesses we are moving away from paper and using the computers to store important records such as customer information. If this data were to be lost, the business would come to a complete halt.
I have been looking at the idea of installing a Microsoft Small Business Server as it would be nice to have centralised control of the machines. However the cost would be over 800 which can not be justified for three machines and five users. Therefore I am turning to Linux for a alternative solution. I have previously used CentOS and Ubuntu for home use but never really gained much knowledge or experience of either.
It is my understanding that Samba can act as a Primary Domain Controller, which if I'm not mistaken is where it handles the network logins and profiles. Is this correct? I have come across many samba tutorials online but whats confusing is they are all different. Some of the tutorials involve using Kerberos and OpenLDAP. Do I need to learn about either of these? What do they do and what benefit will they bring?
Finally, I see Samba 4 is in development and is likely to bring a lot of new features which aren't available in Samba 3. Is this worth waiting for because I don't want to be upgrading everything again 6 months down the road?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am unable to open my webmail on my small business computers (all ubuntu 10.04 LTS using a Billion router) but am able to access it from my home computers (also ubuntu 10.04 LTS but with a different router).
The most likely problem is obviously that the firewall in the router is blocking access. I know how to open ports in the router's firewall, but how do I determine which port or ports need to be opened?
I have asked my email provider, and that have replied that the port can vary and I need to get my technical support people to do it. Obviously they struggle to understand the concept of 'small business"!
I am trying to run a minecraft server from my slackware machine, but i am having an issue.The port for minecraft (25565) is open on my router, but it is reported as closed by all the open port check tools. I noticed that the same was happening for my VNC server. the port reports itself as closed until i actually open the vnc server software. for examplei check the vnc port (5900) when the vnc software is not running, and it is reported as closed. nmap localhost gives the following:

I am trying to make my home server accessible to the whole web. I have installed Nginx on my Fedora 15 64-bit Linux machine, and it works with localhost but it doesn't work online or allow other computers on the network to access it via the IP address. It keeps coming back with: Could not connect

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm fairly sure that this is an Ubuntu issue, as I've tried this on my windows computer with success.I'm running a minecraft server on my laptop, previously over a wireless connection but the data rates were too slow. On a wired connection, however, the server starts up and runs like normal but the port is not open when accessing from the network's public IP. I tested this with canyouseeme(.)org. I can get to it from other computers within the network by using a local IP, which to me seems a little strange as it seems to indicate that the port is open on the PC but somewhere in the router it gets confused due to being wired(?). Obviously I've forwarded the ports on the router (BTHomehub 2.0) with both TCP and UCP (it worked over wireless!). Any suggestions as to what might be causing this? I'm stumped.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIm having a frustrating issue with my two machine cluster I setup using Conga. Everything was working great except now when lucci starts mysql the port (3306) is never opened to outside machines. I can do a "ps -ef | grep mysql" and see it running as well as login to mysql on the node it is running on - but an nmap of the machine does not show the 3306 port and I cannot login to mysql remotely and yes I turned off all iptables(iptables,ip6tables) and SElinux is disabled.What am I missing here? If I start mysql on my own (and it is using the same my.cnf as lucci is) it does show the port open and works perfect,t for some reason when lucci starts it, no dice

I run (trying to/have to) multiple TOMCAT servers.
I am trying to have each tomcat instance listen to on separate IP address for example:
What i am trying to do is to redirect

And so on.
I know that it has to be possible.
I do have just eth0/
Is is it possible. Do I have to create "vittual interfaces"? eth0:1, .......... and do redirection ?
"Server" has got just single interface - just 1 ethernet calbe goes to that server. I am planning to have 10-15 tomcat's on that server (I have to unfortunatley) and each has to run on port 80
Is it possible to "grant" permissions to normal users to run app on port 80 - that would solve me lots of problems if impossible to redirect.
I tried to setcap 'cap_net_bind_service=+ep' /path/to/tomcat ...... but no luck
how do i use 2 computers to host 1 website? i have one of them running fine, and i just got the other one to use as well. one of them is completely configured without any problems(I have been hosing a website for about 2 strait years with it).also, I have a dynamic IP because the idiot ISP's wont give me a static. Is there a way to know if the terminal computer (which is connected to my linux server) is using WinSCP to connect (on a Windows platform) or a linux system? It seems they are using the same port (22) and I think the exact same protocol (SSH / SFTP), is there a way to differentiate between the two though? And going farther there, is it possible to limit the connections only to linux terminal computers and reject requests coming from Windows computers?

View 4 Replies View RelatedThis is my first attempt at a server, and I running Ubuntu 10.04 server. I had to reconfigure my network, so now I am attempting to use it as a server. I have a Linksys WRT54G2 connecting various machines-- Windows XP, Ubuntu builds, and LinuxMint 10 Julia.
The long and the short of it is that the server connects to the Internet-- I can get updates and install programs via terminal. The server also connects to the router, as tested by pings. The client computers all ping back and forth nicely, and I can access the file share via FTP from the local side and externally (this is part of a larger network).
How can I get it so that my client computers can access the Internet through the router and server?
When I try to use Nautilus to connect to another computer on my network, and I attempt to connect using the name of the Windows XP computer I am connecting to, I get the following error; Could not display "smb://computername/". Error: Failed to retrieve share list from server Please select another viewer and try again. However when I attempt to connect using the IP address on the network, it connects instantly. smb://192.168.1.101/ Why doesn't it connect using the computer's name? What am I doing wrong?

It's looking like we're going with LDAP - this decision may be out of my control (but if there's an alternative that would be REALLY better, do let me know). My question is we don't really have a domain name, so when all the tutorials say cn=example,cn=com, I can't mimic this exactly. I've been trying to get away with just one, like cn=researchlab. Will LDAP work with just one, or do I need to invent a second also? On the flipside, will it work with more? Our server can be reached by

A week ago I purchased an VPS. The first few days I was having trouble to set up an outgoing connection on the VPS. Eventually it turned out to be some misconfiguration of the server where the VPS is hosted on.Since then I have installed the apache server, but I'm still not able to access the apache server from an external computer. I already have contacted the provider, but they haven't replied yet. To speed things up I was hoping someone could check my configuration to be sure nothing is wrong with it.To be sure I posted all configuration and information that I think would be important. I would like to restrict access to the server to a few systems (access is restricted to select computers, not users). I first thought of using ssh key, but the key can be copied to another system hence that alone is not sufficient. I am having a dynamic IP, so simple IP based firewall blocking is also not possible. I was thinking about the possibility of using both SSH Key and IP based access. Is it possible to update the firewall rule whenever my ip gets changed?

The third never did and would not find the shared printer. After all rebooted, none show up. All three can access the internet and can display a valid internal network ip address using ifconfig.
