Fedora Servers :: FC13 Web Server Won't Accept External IP's?

Jun 22, 2011

I have a web server configured on FC13 (will be upgrading to 14 soon. 15 doesn't support my video card, so that will have to wait).I have it configured with a "name" via dyndns.org, and I can get to it with this name if I am on my home network (192.168.x.x), however if I try to get to the same site from any other location (such as my iphone when not on wifi), it just times out.'ve checked the iptables, and everything seems OK. I know it's not an issue with httpd since the service starts and runs with no problems.Firewall is configured to allow port 80, and my hardware firewall will forward port 80 to my FC server.

Fedora Servers :: SSH Will Not Accept Connections After Trying To Get VNC Working With Gdm On 11

Aug 1, 2009

I tried to set up vnc following the steps of this webpage:

which did not work. I changed everything back the way it was, but when I tried to ssh in to my remote server, the connection timed out? It showed nothing in secure logs. I tried to ssh in through webmin, in asked for auth but did not connect. The logs said this:

Jul 30 12:05:10 server sshd[2829]: Did not receive identification string from 209.139.209.100

I tried to telnet port 22 through the shell in webmin and got this:

> telnet 209.139.209.100 22
Trying 209.139.209.100...
Connected to 209.139.209.100.

Connection closed by foreign host.

I tried reinstalling ssh, but got the same errors...It worked fine before the howto. I can't imagine how it changed something in ssh...

Ubuntu Servers :: Backing Up A Server To An External Drive?

Jul 17, 2010

I have an Ubuntu server running Lucid. I'd like to be able to back up the hard drive in the server to an external hard drive. I try to plug in a drive via a USB port and it doesn't appear to mount automatically, as it does on the desktop version. Questions: 1) What/where should I be looking for to see if the drive is mounted? (I've looked in /dev and /media; no dice.) 2) What's the mount command I should use to manually mount the external hard drive? 3) What backup commands or programs, other than rsync, are recommended? (Nothing against rsync.)

Ubuntu Servers :: Apache Server Not Accesible From External Computers

Dec 8, 2010

A week ago I purchased an VPS. The first few days I was having trouble to set up an outgoing connection on the VPS. Eventually it turned out to be some misconfiguration of the server where the VPS is hosted on.Since then I have installed the apache server, but I'm still not able to access the apache server from an external computer. I already have contacted the provider, but they haven't replied yet. To speed things up I was hoping someone could check my configuration to be sure nothing is wrong with it.To be sure I posted all configuration and information that I think would be important. Ubuntu Servers :: HTTPS - Cannot Accept Certificate Permanently

Oct 1, 2010

A few days ago I installed a new SVN server using ubuntu 10.04 server editiopn at our company and it runs almost flawlessly. Almost that is. The server uses a self-signed certificate so all communications go over https. The strange thing is this. When I run some svn command from my (windows) pc, like update I get asked whether or not I want to accept the certificate. Then I choose "accept permanently" end all goes well. In future command I don't get that question anymore. But when my colleague does the same from his pc, he also gets the same question. Now, when he chooses "accept temporary", all goes smooth. But when he chooses "accept permanently", like I did, he gets an error saying:

RA layer request failed
svn: OPTIONS of 'https://path_to_some_repo': Could not read status line: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine.

Of course I googled on this and could find two things: Server settings are wrong
there's something wrong with the firmware of the router. The first couldn't almost be the case since it works for me and I followed the manuals. The second one couldn't be it either because when I log in with my account on my colleague's pc, it works. This is also the case when he logs on to my pc. So the problem exists specifically when he is logged in on his own pc. The setup of this machine is exactly the same as mine.

Fedora Servers :: Set Up An External SMTP Relay Box?

Jun 29, 2011

I've tried googling this, and am having trouble finding something that doesn't end up being dizzying or confusing.

I was wondering if anybody could provide me with a concise, conclusive answer/guide.

I have a set of servers which require redundant SMTP relay. The first two of their SMTP relays are their own SMTP servers, and as such, are not dependable in the event that their network/servers go down. Their monitoring software runs on their machines as well, and uses the SMTP servers they themselves host.

I need to set up an external SMTP relay box that they can use to relay their monitoring alerts/admin notices in the case that their mailservers go down.

I have a company exchange server with pop/imap support @ my disposal but, unfortunately, that box runs Windows and does not permit any changes to services or additional software to add for the purposes of relaying clients.

So now, I need to create a dedicated linux box that can act as a relay to send email coming from the monitoring/admin/alert software in case their first two smtp servers have gone down.

Fedora Servers :: Postfix Does Not Receive External Email

Jan 14, 2010

I have been running an email server on a Red Hat 9 system for 5 years, and wanting to upgrade it to the latest Fedora OS. A few days ago it crashed. The server is running Fedora 11 (up-to-date). Clients are Fedora 11 and Windows XP machines using Thunderbird for accessing email. The server is running Postfix and Dovecot. Within my local network I can send and receive emails. I can also send email to addresses outside of my local network. The only problem is that I cannot receive any email from outside the local network. I cannot think of anything aside from my firewall (iptables) or postfix config that could be causing the problem.

Below are my iptables file, and the postfix main.cf changes that I have made.

Server :: External SMTP Server With PHP / Send An Email Using An External Server?

Feb 9, 2011

I'm rather (VERY) inexperienced when it comes to Linux, but Fedora 14 is the environment I have to use on my laptop at work, so please forgive any dumb that comes out of me.

How do I tell php to send an email with mail() using an external mail server?

The situation: I've got apache/php running a webserver on my local machine. It's for dev purposes only, and the website files I'm using are checked out from our SVN. This lets me make changes to our website while not actually changing our website.

I've come across an issue I'm fixing where I need to verify that an email is successfully getting sent out, and unfortunately, this email is sent out using php's mail(), and not our website's usual $mail object. Unfortunately, I don't have the authority to change how this sends out right now, just when it sends out.

I've been running everything fine on my machine for a month now, and haven't needed the mail stuff until now. How do I tell php to send an email using an external server?

Ubuntu :: Getting Openssh Server To Accept Connections In 10.04?

Jul 13, 2010

I'm having problems getting openssh server to accept connections in Ubuntu 10.04.Here's what I've done (twice): Installed Ubuntu 10.04 on USB drive with pendrive installer. This creates a default user "ubuntu" and you don't get the chance to choose a password for it. Started a keyring for network access and selected password. Works.Enabled VNC and selected password. Works fine with VNC client on local network. Logs in as "ubuntu" user and asks for the VNC password, then connects. Note: the client doesn't know the "ubuntu" user password, and neither do I! However, it works.Installed openssh client and server from Ubuntu s/w center.

$ ssh localhost OR $ ssh ubuntu@localhost try to connect, but asks for password, which I don't know (see step one, above) so, then I created a new user, with known password, logged in as new user in Ubuntu, works.however, $ ssh newuser@localhost still fails, even when correct password for <newuser> is supplied. Rejects the password three times, then gets the usual error about keys.I also tried connecting with an SSH terminal app from my iPad, again using <newuser>. It gets essentially the same error, "failure to authenticate".

All this is still on my own LAN, haven't gotten to going outside the router yet. What I want to do in the end is use VNC over SSH from a client on my iPad to talk securely to Ubuntu while I'm traveling.

Server :: Install Of Phpmyadmin On Ubuntu 11.04 Won't Accept Log In

Jun 11, 2011

I seem to have a working install of Ubuntu Server 11.04 (Samba running without issue on same machine). The lamp stack seems to be running fine as well. (Apache index.html page works, phpinfo() works, mysql works from the mysql command line.) I have installed phpmyadmin. After install I had to reboot the server (restarting Apache still said error in PHP and couldn't start). After reboot, the welcome screen comes up, but using root with password doesn't work. Using an admin user that I created with privileges in *.* doesn't work either. There are no errors on the screen, it just simply loops back to the beginning screen.

There is an error in apache2 error.log saying that it can't find the page [URL] which seems strange because you can bring up the welcome page, you just can't log into phpmyadmin with any of the created users that I made from the mysql commandline. I don't see any php errors in syslog (which is where the php errors are being directed) except a notice that CRON is running for some purpose for PHP.

Networking :: Ubuntu Server Does Not Accept Incoming Network Connections Like SSH?

Feb 25, 2011

I have a bunch of Ubuntu boxes on one subnet, 192.168.1.0. I have a Windows 7 box on another subnet, 192.168.2.0. I am able to ping and SSH to all servers on the .1 subnet except for one server, which I will call PITA. I will attempt to SSH to PITA, and it won't respond, nor does it respond to pings. I will the SSH to PITA from another of the test servers, successfully connect, and then when I SSH from my Windows 7 machine I can connect successfully. If I first connect via console to PITA and send some pings out (to anywhere, like 4.2.2.2), I can also connect from my Windows 7 machine. I've never seen anything like this.

One of the weird things is that I used PITA to create an image that I then used to create many of the other test servers, and they work fine, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I've checked /var/log/messages and syslog and there's nothing in them that indicates a problem. I've rebooted this server, restarted SSH, changed the IP in case it was conflicting with something else, forced an ARP update in case it was cached (since I had bonded the interfaces), cleared the ARP cache on my own machine, verified Network Manager is not installed...and I still have this issue.

Here are some network-related config:

Fedora Installation :: Software Update - Fedora (2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64) - Nvidia Driver Doesn't Work

Sep 1, 2010

Fedora (2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64) I installed that update, during the installation process it said that it had to remove three packages, one of them was kmod nvidia for the old kernel (Fedora (2.6.33.8-149.fc13.x86_64))After the update finished installing the new kernel, I restarted the system and Nvidia did not load. (I assume because Update manager removed the old nvidia? But I also assumed that a new version would be installed automatically?)I received the following Boot messages:

Code:

Entering non-interactive startup
Starting monitoring for VG vg_user1: 3 logical volume(s) in volume group "vg_user1" monitored

[code]....

I'm confused, if Update Manager removed kmod nvidia, then why does yum say it is installed? And why doesn't the new kernel update work with that version? Or should I install a driver version for that particular kernel? I've read while searching that I need to install a kmod-nvidia for that particual kernel version and that I should login to my previous kernel until that happens, is that the problem I'm having?

Why don't rpmfusion and fedoraproject release the kmod-nvidia and kernel updates at the same time to avoid problems such as this? Does anyone know how long does it usually take for rpmfusion to release the new kmod-nvidia driver for the latest kernel?

Programming :: Socket Server Using Pthread Doesn't Wait For Accept() Properly?

Apr 19, 2010

I'm building a simple(?) socket server using threads to serve up a few requests. The spec is such that I have to listen to three ports at once, so I decided to use pthread to create three separate threads that would wait for connections, then spawn new threads to handle them.

The problem is that when I do this, for some reason the program never enters the wait loop and instead terminates (All three threads did get created since the messages get printed properly.) It gets to the line which prints "???", but not the line after the accept() call.I don't see an open port when I check for one either so I'm 99% sure they're terminating.Basically I have a main() method which has three calls to pthread_create, which should result in three threads being run that all wait for connections (listenOnPort). After each thread creation I print some info to make sure it's actually being created.

By the way, when I just run listenOnPortwithout threading, the server appears to enter the loop correctly and seems to be waiting for requests. It's only when I run the functions as threads that the problem seems to happen. The source is attached below. Any help will be appreciated. Much of the code is borrowed from a website (I can't post it because I am new here.) You need not worry about the handler_ methods because those are just methods that are run by the threads themselves.

Also--the original source was in C and I changed it to C++. Should I just use C?
