Nov 27, 2009I'd like to run a script as root at boot. So far, I've tried that : [URL]...ript-boot.html , but it did not worked. By the way, I'm not even sure that it is the good way to do.

Fedora :: Kernel - Cant Boot Into Root ?
Dec 11, 2009I saw the Bugzzila Strobe Light Icon was active and it said that it has found a kernel problem. After clicking the icon, the unexpected happend, my system crash completley.
After rebooting, here is what im getting.
Can't mount root fulesystem
Boot has failed, Sleeping forere.

Jul 29, 2009I am new to Fedora. I know my top probably already been posted somewhere but I just could not find it. I just installed Fedora 11. But my root password does not work (I guess was my fault to type wrong in the first place or some type of short term memory lost). I looked at the root password recovery procedure which involves select single user at GRUB page when booting. But for some reasons, Fedora 11 does not boot into GRUB. I tried Alt+CTRL+F1, F1 or Shift, none of those gives me Grub screen.

Nov 6, 2010UPDATE: This is a bug: [URL] Evidently the problem is with plymouth because a workaround is to add "rd_NO_PLYMOUTH" to the kernel boot options. I don't get a prompt for my disk encyrption pass phrase---just a flashing cursor---but that's a small price to pay for being able to run fsck when the root filesystem wasn't umounted properly.
I have fully updated f13 (as of today) on a laptop with all ext2 file systems (It has nothing but flash memory.) If it's shut down without unmounting all file systems, it drops to a shell and asks for the root password to run fsck when it's rebooted. Every key press is treated as though it were <enter>, with a response to the effect that the password is incorrect.

May 20, 2010I have installed Fedora 12 on my HP laptop which has got a NVIDIA graphics card. I have got latest F12 kernel 2.6.32 as well as default kernel 2.6.31.I have installed Nvidia Proprietary Drivers and modified grub.conf file for 2.6.32 kernel saying blacklist nouvaue so that it can load NVIDIA drivers ...After that I am able to successfully boot into 2.6.32 kernel with Nvidia Proprietary Drivers.Everything seems to be fine .. But suddenly today when I tried to boot into F12 2.6.32 kernel I got the following error

Jan 12, 2010My Fedora 12 System was failed when booting.The message like that : mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/mapper/my_vol missing codepage or helper program, or other error. In some case, useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so Can't mount at root filesystem. [drm: drm_mode_rmfb ] *ERROR* tried to remove a fb that we didn't own. Boot has failed, sleep forever. I guess something wrong with my hard disk, so the bootloader can't recognize the filesystem type.

Jun 1, 2010I'm a long time Linux user. Finally got around to upgrading my Fedora 11 system to Fedora 12 by using the 'preupgrade' tool. The upgrade appeared to go well (downloaded packages, rebooted into installer, etc). However, now that the upgrade is complete, I'm unable to boot my system.
Here's my configuration:
/dev/sda (80Gb)
200Mb /boot partition (ext3)
52Gb / partition (ext4 - managed as logical volume)
2Gb swap partition (managed as logical volume)
20Gb /spare partition (ext3 - managed as logical volume) .....
All worked fine under Fedora 11 for the last few months. Grub now presents me with 'Fedora' and 'Windows XP' boot options. The /boot/grub/menu.lst file is essentially the same as it was for Fedora 11, except for the different kernel versions, etc. The boot sequence shows the Fedora bubble (??) and gets about 80% full when the screen goes black and the message displayed is:
No root device found
Boot has failed, sleeping forever
If I boot Windows, all works fine.
Am able to boot using a SystemRescueCD disk. The disks all look okay and I can mount/modify all partitions, etc. The grub menu.lst file read as follows (sorry, typed in, not copied):

timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
hiddenmenu
title Fedora (2.6.32.11-99.fc12.i686.PAE)

Aug 18, 2010Having just installed fc13 and downloaded the KDE package I attempted to log out as user and back in as root, but I keep getting a message about the wrong password. This is odd as the same password works in terminal if I try to become a SuperUser. I have tried turning off SELinux to no avail. I cannot log in from cold as root,only as user.

Nov 21, 2010I have 2 Debian OS's and wanted to put Fedora next to it.
Install went ok, but after rebooting it says: "No root device found. Boot has failed, sleeping forever."
During install from the live CD I didn't "v" the boot (efi or something?) because I thought Grub would take care of everything.
Should I just reinstall again and choose the Fedora bootloader? Won't it mess up Grub?

Jan 9, 2010I've downloaded Fedora 12 and decided to try and install it on my old laptop which is currently running Ubuntu 9.10 with no problems.
When I boot from the live cd, it starts to load with the 3 bars on the bottom, one on top of the other, one is white, one is dark blue, the other is in between those colours in the spectrum somewhere....
Anyway, the load bars complete and "Fedora 12" turns white, then the following output populates:
mount: unknown filesystem type 'DM_Snapshot_Cow' (<----- repeated a bunch of times) can't mount root filesystem Boot has failed, sleeping forever.

May 7, 2010I have a Feadora 12 Live CD. It booted up fine on my 700 Mhz computer. I've since then put a new HDD in with which I intended to install Fedora on. But now i get this message

Jul 14, 2011I've started to get emails that would typically come from [URL] as [URL]. These emails come from services that send out emails (backup programs) directly, or from cronjobs. I've logged in as the non-root account and either sudo su - or su - to root and the restart the service at one point or another. If I login directly as root and bounce the service or cron the emails come across as from root. I don't see anything in my environment variables after I su to indicate what would cause this. I'm not sure where else to look? A pam setting? This seems to have happened between Fedora 10 and 14 (did a bunch of overdue upgrades recently) I've only got Fedora so I don't have anything to compare to. In Fedora 10 I did not have this problem.

Jun 24, 2010I'm new to OpenSuse and also fairly new to Linux in general. I installed OpenSuse 11.2 on a secondary machine and I really like it. However, during booting it stops somewhere half way, giving me only a black page but with a functioning cursor arrow. I can't do anything with it though. I re-booted in recovery mood and managed to boot up as root using the command 'startx'. How can I get back to "my own" log-in from here, with my own settings etc? There's obviously something missing during boot-up but where do I look?

May 19, 2011I just did a fresh install of 11.4 and I LOVE IT!!! One of the little issues I am having though, is that there is no login screen. No matter what settings I change it still auto-logs me in.
I am using GRUB and the Boot Loader Location has both "Boot from MBR" and "Boot from Root Partition". Is this right? I would think that I should just boot from the MBR.

Jul 15, 2010I installed Debian 5.0.2 about a year ago, my first encounter with Debian and first serious look at Linux. I never got it right. Some software wouldn't work after installing. This week I decided to just start all over. I installed Debian 5.0.5 on a second disk. I seems to be better. Software that failed before works now!
Problem 1:
I ended up with two possible boot up choices in GRUB, but they both run 5.0.5 w/ Gnome. Why two? How do I know which to keep and how do I get rid of the other?
Problem 2:
Previously, I could boot into a command console by interrupting the normal boot. I don't get that chance now. It goes right to Gnome. I can't boot as root in Gnome. How do I get on as root?

Aug 21, 2010I installed ubuntu 10.04 from the CD (downloaded from ubuntu website), all worked very well. until today that I decided to run the software updater. It installed all the updates correctly, I restarted ok, but i experienced a mini locks, for example when i was with firefox, firefox had mini hangs for about 15 seconds then run normally. Then all OS got unstable, windows showing no thing, for example when i tried to restart using the button, it didnot do anything. Well i reset my computer and BOOM!, im stuck after Grub showing me this:

mount : mounting /sys on /root/sys failed : No such file or directory
mount : mounting /proc on /root/proc failed : No such file or directory

I'm able to reproduce this. I installed a fresh 10.4 again, then installed propietary drivers (nvidia), restart, all working flawless here, then updating all packages using the update-manager, restart, here not all working well (same sympthoms) so i decided to restart, then BOOM AGAIN.. I did the process 3 times and, the same, so I think something is BROKEN. So im able to reproduce it but don't know what the hell is causing it.

Dec 9, 2010I installed Debain Lenny as a dual boot with ubuntu 10.10. Chose not to install Grub legacy in the mbr or in any partition because I thought grub2 could handle it. All went well, updated grub2 in ubuntu and it found Debian, but when I try to boot into Debain it hangs at - waiting for root filesystem. I've searched, but can't fathom why this is happening, much less how to fix it without just reinstalling it.

Feb 1, 2010this is a strange one. running 11.2 pae 32 bit kernel with all the most recent updates and gnome. This is a fresh install. I built the machine, and then installed all my repositories and software, and used the machine for about 2 days, and now when I log in it hangs on logging into gnome. it's strange because the wireless notification about available wireless networks is in the top left corner of the screen, and nothing else happens. I can log in as root.I also had this issue before I formatted the machine (that's why I formatted)
