Fedora :: Open With Software Install Option?

Sep 6, 2011

When I right-click on a rpm I download, I am given the option to "Open With Software Install". It starts the software install process but errors out on authentication. Why bother to have it as a right-click menu choice if it doesn't work? I used "yum install" from terminal to install Opera, but I would prefer to just right-click on the file in my Downloads folder and install from there. I understand that root's password may be required, but why am I not prompted for it?

OpenSUSE Install :: Should There Be Option To Download ISO Option For CD Installation

Jul 18, 2010

when I go to download 11.3 I am presented with the installation medium for a DVD installation with a button that says download DVD. Should there be an option to download an ISO option for a CD installation on this page along with the DVD version? Some of our older machines can only read CD's with a max size of 500+ megs.

Fedora Installation :: Get System Restore Option For XP After Install

Jan 31, 2009

probably did something stupid.. just haven't figured out what yet.. hope someone can point me in the right direction. daughters computer broke, maybe virus, so i did clean reinstall of xp. decided to give her a couple of linux distros, thinking maybe they are safer for when she is surfing..

Used gparted to repartition hd:

Partition table entries are not in disk order

Installed Ubuntu 8.04. was then able to boot into either ubuntu or xp. next installed fedora 10. new menu.lst did not show ubuntu, only fedora and xp. had some lockups in fedora, and had to pull plug to reboot 2 or 3 times. replaced power supply. added ubuntu into menu.lst. boots into fedora and ubuntu fine. tried to boot xp, and get "Preparing System Recovery Option", then PC Angel appears, and it wants me to use the system restore option for xp.

Is there something i can do to recover xp without having to wipe the hd and reinstall xp, then reinstall ubuntu and fedora (and if i do all that, how can i be sure i don't end up with the same problem?

Fedora Installation :: Blank Screen After Install Option Set

Nov 21, 2010

I am trying to use a F14 network install CD to upgrade on an old HP Pavilion 9695C (Athalon 850MHz, nVidia NV5 RIVA TNT2/TNT2 Pro AGP) with F12 on it. This same disk successfully upgraded a HP Omnibook 6000 with F12. I boot with the network install CD and get the initial menu to select to install/upgrade, install using basic video driver, etc. After selecting either upgrade or basic video driver install, I see the CD being read, then nothing, just a blank screen. I had a similar problem with F12 network install on this machine. So I tried adding "vga=0x318 nomodeset" to the upgrade boot options. The only difference is a quick flash on the screen, then a blinking "underscore character" cursor. The "install using basic video driver" has the same result.

Have also tried:linux nofb
vga=791 [nomodeset]
vga=1 [nomodeset]
xdriver=nv nomodeset
xdriver=vesa nomodeset

However, I always end up with a blank screen or blank screen with blinking underscore cursor. I know this particular AGP has problems with the nouveau driver. On F12 I had to force it to use the nv driver. I submitted a bug but there was no interest on it as this was F12 and F13 was the latest at the time. I did try to upgrade to F13, but ran into this same problem. I was hoping F14 would be better.

Fedora Installation :: Partition Size After F14 Install With Resize Option

Apr 11, 2011

I've just installed Fedora 14 over an old Ubuntu (heron, I think). The old install used a single partition for both / and /home; and I wanted to try to avoid reinstalling /home if possible (but yes, I did back it up). I chose the anaconda option to shrink the old Ubuntu /, and created a new LVM for the Fedora /. This seemed to work perfectly. I mounted the old / on '/host' (an old naming habit), and then mounted individual home dirs into /home using autofs. All seemed fine. However, on my first reboot after the autofs mounts fsck failed. The current situation is as follows:

# fsck /dev/sda6
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.18
e2fsck 1.41.12 (17-May-2010)
The filesystem size (according to the superblock) is 15360000 blocks
The physical size of the device is 15359895 blocks
Either the superblock or the partition table is likely to be corrupt!
Abort<y>? yes

# dumpe2fs /dev/sda6 | grep 'Block count'
dumpe2fs 1.41.12 (17-May-2010)
Block count: 15360000
# dumpe2fs -o superblock=32768 /dev/sda6 | grep 'Block count'
dumpe2fs 1.41.12 (17-May-2010)
Block count: 15360000
Same thing for all the other backup superblocks I've tried.
# echo '15360000 4 * p' | dc
61440000
# fdisk -s /dev/sda6
61439583

Resize2fs tells me to run fsck, and complains of a short read if I try to force. Fsck seems to run fine if I say 'no' to the abort prompt, but doesn't change the problem. Filesystem is ext3. Started with debugfs. First used icheck and ncheck to work out which file(s) had been written to the non-existent blocks past the partition size. Fortunately, there was only one. Deleted that file (can restore it from backup later). Quit debugfs. Now resize2fs -p -f worked perfectly. fsck after resizing was clean. Reboot seems happy. As for the origin of the problem, I would guess there's a rounding bug in the code anaconda uses to shrink partitions.

Ubuntu :: How To Remove Option (Open With Microsoft Office)

Feb 9, 2010

I was checking out wine and installed ms office 2007 in it. But I ended up deciding (for the Windows programs that I needed to use, and the context in which I need them) to just install XP in a VirtualBox machine and use all my Windows programs there (not very many). So, I uninstalled wine and I did all of this that is recommended in the wine faq (to completely remove everything):

rm -rf $HOME/.wine
rm -f $HOME/.config/menus/applications-merged/wine*
rm -rf $HOME/.local/share/applications/wine
rm -f $HOME/.local/share/desktop-directories/wine*
rm -f $HOME/.local/share/icons/????_*.xpm

However, I now have an annoying issue. Microsoft office programs are the default opener of office documents. And since the programs no longer exist, this causes a problem. How can I remove the option to "Open With Microsoft Office ..." so that OpenOffice is the default?

Software :: FF3 Won't Give The Option To "open" A PDF File From Email?

Jun 22, 2009

...it only gives the option to Save the file. I don't want to save it. I get a PDF file nightly, which contains the next day's work orders for my job.I'd like to just open the file. It's always attached to an email and opened using Yahoo mail.As it stands right now, I must always save it to the Desktop, then delete the previous day's file. Any idea how to change this? I've set the option to "Always Ask" in Edit --> Preferences --> Applications --> PDF Document.What else can I do? I seem to recall a fix where you'd delete a file containing all the preferences. I'd prefer not to do that, as I have them all set the way I want.Plus...and this is weird...it'll occasionally ask me to choose between opening the file or saving it
