Fedora :: Finding A File Recovery Software?

Nov 23, 2009

Can anyone recommend good file recovery software for Fedora? I accidentally deleted an iPlayer file (not critical) from an NTFS partition. I tried booting into Windows and using Recuva - it can find the file intact (I can see from the file size it's the correct one) but the directory structure is gone and the file is nameless. EDIT: got it back with Recuva in Windows, just needed to run Recuva as admin.

But I don't know how...

Fedora Security :: Finding The Source Of A Break In ?

Jul 16, 2010

I noticed a very very high cpu usage on my webserver. All four CPUs were running on 100%.

Top shows several perl processes from apache that run for a long time, with a high %CPU.

Since the server was fc10, I did a fresh installation to fc13, and the fresh installation didn't have this issue. Then I loaded back all the user-data, and it started again.

Several, 4, 6, 8, ... 100 perl processes from apache.

lsof -p with the pid of such a process

Code:

The estabilished connection is sometimes "proud2pirate.com" wich is a non-existing domain.

Fedora :: Finding The Repo An Installed Package Came From?

Is there some way using yum or rpm to find out which repo the installed package came from? I know Smart PM shows this info, but it has been hanging on Centos 5.5, for some strange reason, so that's not really an option for now.

Fedora :: Finding A List Of Renamed Packages?

Sep 1, 2011

I get annoyed sometimes that from one Fedora release to another, some programs get renamed or put into different packages. Examples:

* Gnome's volume control applet. Used to be provided by gnome-media, now it's moved to control-center. Worse, the command itself was renamed from gnome-volume-control-applet to gnome-sound-applet, so I couldn't even try a `yum provides` search to locate it.

* Gnome's Disk Usage Analyzer tool. Used to be in a package by itself, baobab. Now it's provided by gnome-utils.

Is there a wiki or something where the full list of all renamed/repackaged programs can be found? I'm not a Gnome desktop user, so, while I'm sure all the packages I like from Gnome are just there out-of-the-box for most users, it doesn't help me very much. The volume control applet for example is extremely useful for other desktop environments (and Gnome itself really doesn't have much need for it anyway, since they have their own built into the window shell).

Fedora :: Finding Lost /boot Partition On F12 X86_64

Dec 8, 2009

During attempted repair of damaged USB stick with fdisk and parted, an error appears to have changed the partition holding the /boot partition. At one point I possibly typed sda1 instead of sdb1 and appear to have lost my /boot partition.

This is on a HP Compaq Presario CQ50 228CA Portable running only Fedora (No multiboot).

I am able to reach most of the programs and data on the machine with the rescue mode from the F12 x86_64 DVD, chroot /mnt/sysimage command - so the main part of the system is still available. But when the machine starts up all I get is the 'grub:' prompt. In rescue mode I can cd /boot but there is nothing to list, and certainly there is no /boot/grub. fdisk /dev/sda1 p reports 255 heads 63 sectors/tracks 25 Cylinders Units=cylinders of 16065 x 512 = 8225280 Bytes Disk Identifier 0x0000000 - and then nothing under the headings Device, Boot, Start End etc...

Previously /boot was on /dev/sda1 a 194 m patition, with 39m used and 146m available (according to logwatch mail),

My questions:
Are there any commands in the grub program that would help my recovery - I doubt it, because grub is in place and running but I am not sure. Could I using fdisk recover the sda1 partition and it's contents? If so - how? If no, could I use the F12x86_64 to update and hence recover the /boot drive and retain the the LVM volumes both programs and content? If no, is my only option to reload F12 from the start, then rsync in my backup /home directory?

Since there had been a fair amount of customization done on the previous F11 which had been preupgraded to F12 I would prefer any option that would retain the customizations ...

Fedora Installation :: F12 Hangs - Finding Storage Devices

Dec 9, 2009

I'm installing F12 on a new HP ML-350 G6. The machine has 4 Gb memory, and a Smart Array P410i SAS controller. There are two 72 Gb disks set up as a RAID 1. I'm using a full install DVD. There are no other storage devices other than the RAID, a USB tape drive, and the DVD drive. When I try to install F12 it hangs after setting the keyboard type with "Finding Storage Devices". I've let it sit for an hour or more and it doesn't get beyond that.

F11 installs on the machine with no problem. I've used the F12 DVD on other machines with no problem (but not any other ML-350s). If I switch to a console session, dmesg shows the driver for the controller (HP CISS) has loaded and the RAID drive recognized. The appropriate devices (/dev/cciss/c0d0, /dev/ccss/c0d0p0, etc.) are all present in /dev.
