View 1 Replies View RelatedI have run into a problem with my desktop using roughly 50% RAM (w/o buffers or cache) while running a limited set of applications (fbterm, tmux, weechat, ncmpc, rtorrent) on the command line. This usage only increases roughly 5-10% when starting X (an addition of xcompmgr, awesome wm, zim, parcellite, 2x conky (one replacing root-tails functionality), plus firefox and other apps that may or may not be running from time to time). (h)top is reporting programs only using roughly .1-.2% per proccess and roughly 100 processes (current look at top shows 120 processes, only 32 of which are registering any usage over 0.0%) The RAM usage when in the console (which I will add is about 150MB after boot) is totally unreasonable and I need some direction on trying to find out what is using all of this RAM.

RAM: 2G
CPU: AMD 64 x2 4800+
HDD: 3x WD Black 750G (RAID 5 on partition 2 (swap) and 3 (root), RAID 1 on partition 1 (boot). LVM over root partition)

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have this happening on my vaio laptop and FC11- top shows /usr/share/scripts/shared/onlyservice or /usr/share/logwatch/scripts/shared/onlyservice running %100 of one core of my CPU. It takes 30 to 40 min to stop. Same thing happens when I go to a GUI log-viewer. This, of course wouldn't matter on a desktop, but with a laptop it's kinda expensive. On boot up after the grub I get error: Invalid TSD data!

I am using squid server to share internet on my network.Problem is: whenever an user trying to open a website through squid server, it opens too slow, but if same user tries to open same website by passing squid server, it opens 3 times faster. Downloading speed is same in both scenario. Only buffering speed is slow through squid.

I've always missed having full control and not having to contact my hosting company when I need to do some specific changes - and some changes they won't do for you at all.I've chosen the non-GUI Ubuntu Server with LAMP, and nothing more is installed really except for a couple of command line tools from the repository. The LAMP software has been locked down as good as I can by following some guides on the net and using common sense. Like Apache 2 don't have access to the file system except for the www folder, and setting the headers to Prod. MySQL has skip-networking and I've commented out the listen string to localhost. PHP has a truckload of functions that I've disabled in the php.ini, also by following some guides on the net, among some other security enhancing php.ini editing.
The only thing the server will serve is a well known PHP forum and some html docs, and that's all. Nothing advanced or complicated stuff, and I'm definitely not programming PHP myself or letting anyone do it for me.But I do want to sleep well at night knowing that my server is always on and sitting on the edge of my home network! And can I do that? I've heard that you don't need to be worried about getting your Linux server box hacked, but you should be worried about anyone getting root access to it. But is it really that simple? Ubuntu is shipped without root account and you must have the sudo password, right? What's the odds for anyone to get full access to my system?An issue: I've heard that Apache never must run as root. When I do a ps -ef, I see that there are several www-data processes running apache, but there's one root process running apache too. I just installed F14 on my thinkpad R61 notebook and I am not able to completely browse the web. By that I mean that I can connect and access and browse fedora.org (from firefox) and I can install software and updates but no general browsing. I can successfully ping [URL] in a terminal but I am blocked in a browser.
I tried both hardwired and wireless connections to my router, same issues with both and my desktop machine running F14 works just fine (hard line) on the same router.I also tried disabling the firewall and it does not change anything.
Is there a way by which i can improve my Internet speed. I have a 100Mbps connection but the download speed is only 100kbps. I know that my ISP has limited by connection speed, but i am curious to try as to how i can get the maximum speed.

Works fine the configuration is basic.lets name it to 1st PCeth0 - modem ip (public)eth1 - 172.16.1.1 (LAN)Then I've decided to change and add another Centos 5.5 for Firewall Service that is directly connected to the modem and then shares internet connection and some ports to 1st PC.

I'm running into a problem where my system is running out of disk space on the root partition, but I can't figure out where the runaway usage is. I've had a stable system for a couple of years now, and it just ran out of space. I cleaned some files up to get the system workable again, but can't find the big usage area, and I'm getting conflicting results.For example, when I do a df it says I'm using 44GB out of 58 GB:

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been using Wheezy for two years, and everything was OK, so I decided to upgrade to Jessie. In fact i decided to perform a clean install of jessie, so I formatted the partition where Wheezy was installed, and the /boot partition, and I installed jessie in those partitions.
As I had done with Wheezy, I installed jessie in an encrypted LVM, and the installation was ok (well, almost everything was OK, because grub and plymouth were not working, but I will open another topic about it).
First thing I did after installing Jessie was editting sources.list in order to download a few programs (plymouth, firmware linux non free, libdvdcss2, gufw, menulibre). Moreover, I downloaded a few progrmas from the Debian install DVD (flashplugin, VLC, chromium, clamav). i did not perform a dist upgrade because i was not at home, and where I was I did not have a Wifi connection (so I was using my mobile connecion -USB ethernet with an android phone-. BTW I had just performed a hard reset I had not installed any apps after that, so that mobile phone was "clean").
After that, I created a desktop user account, and I rebooted the laptop . When i rebooted, I started to tweak my user account: I edited dconf, and the gnome shell theme; and I started my mobile connection to download three extensions for gnome shell (window list, simple dock and activities configurator. I had used those extensions with Wheezy, and I had never had any problems). Ten minutes after I started the mentioned mobile connection, I reveived a SMS as I had used over 300 MB. Gnome monitor showed that I have downloaded 300 MB, and the android native data usage app showed the same. I did not download any video or music neither watch any videos on youtube, dailymotion..., I did not visit any suspicious web
I had a look at the apt logs and I din not find anything significant (I was using a no sudo user account, so i was not able to perform a dist.upgrade), I had a look at the download, video, music, picture folders and i din not find anything. I tried to check the iceweasel cache folder, but there were so many subfolders I could not check everything.
Is there something which can act as a fully fledged proxy (exactly like squid) but which can also monitor data usage?
At the moment what I do is I log data usage of IP addresses (allocated by DHCP) by using IPFM. Obviously getting a new IP address from a DHCP server isn't hard and this could be abused.
So I was thinking if I require proxy authentication and log usage that way, there is no way for anyone to abuse the system.
Does anyone know of a proxy server capable of logging data usage?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm on Comcast (insert vomit sound here) and they have a 250GB monthly limit. I don't think I'm remotely close to this on a normal month and want to figure out if I could perhaps squeak by with the 5GB limit imposed by Verizon's 3G wireless broadband.
I'm ideally looking for a quick easy-to-use GUI application, rather than something that's done via the command line.
I thought perhaps I could look in my Account and find a nice "You've used X percent of 250 GB thus far" window. Then I called, but Comcast couldn't tell me. They just borked me off to some Windoze application 3rd party which I'm supposed to install.
I run Skype and occasionally download Fedora iso images and so on. Rarely am I doing more than surfing the web, chatting, and sending emails. I doubt I'm even close to 250GBs but I'm guessing that 5GB will end up being problematic.
Are there any programs that will keep track of how much bandwidth I'm using? It'd be great to have an application that runs there in the taskbar and just shows a graph of how much I've used thus far.
I need applet which shows the total data usage (In+out) (of the current session or since the uptime) on the panel.I searched a lot, but everytime I had to click somewhere to see my data usage. I don't want that. I want my data usage displayed regularly on the panel.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am connecting from this Ubuntu 9.10 computer to a WRT54G running dd-wrt, over WPA2 AES. Normally, everything works fine and I get very satisfactory download speeds; usually 1.5+ Mbps. Sometimes though, usually after restarting networking a lot, i.e. /etc/init.d/networking restart, the download speed seems to be limited to around 64-70 kbps. It also happened recently when I disconnected from a vpn with vpnc. It's really strange because it has nothing to do with changing any settings.
The only things I can think of are POSSIBLY wpa_supplicant causing problems because that's the only thing besides networking that's restarted. It could be related to my router config but I can't imagine what because it runs so fast normally. Rebooting the router doesn't fix it. Restarting the network, manually killing wpa_supplicant, rebooting the router. None of these seem to fix it. The only way I've found is to just reboot. Obviously, something breaks at some point that isn't affected again by anything but a reboot.
