F12 / Gnome 2.28.2 I'm just trying to share the /home/Public folder with my Mandriva laptop. The "manual" on Gnome's website doesn't give much info, other than clicking the option to share the folder and deciding whether to use a password or not. There has to be more to it, otherwise it'd work.
All I'm looking to do is copy files to and from the folder on the desktop machine from the laptop..
I have got 11.04 install on my dell system.The system has got 2 harddisk,all my data is store in the 2nd harddisk.How do I share the folder in the 2nd harddisk.Samba is already install in the system.

Since i like Debian now a lot (in past days it was a very hard system to handle, but there has been some progress i noticed), i have to change some things (want Debian as main system now) For Ubuntu i have: (was meant to be main system on Notebook) "/", "/home" and a "swap" partition, but since i am now going to use mainly Debian, i wanted to store my files all in the "/home"-folder of my extended Ubuntu partition (has much more space available) not in the "/home" folder of the Debian system. So i want both (Debian and Ubuntu) to use the same extended partition ("/home") which i created for Ubuntu to save their files like downloads, videos, and so on.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI am an old Ubuntu user and have just strted running F11 on my iBook. I always run system-config-samba on all my machines including my server and even on my work server which shares with windows, Linux and OSX and have found it to be perfect. I installed it straight away on the new Fedora system but It doesn't seem to be functioning the way i expected it to.
I installed system-config-samba and then set up one share folder "Public" with open read write privileges and then turned off the Fedora Firewall all together. But "public" did not become open until I entered the user password for the fedora machine. But, then I could see all folders on the Fedora machine. Even root on the fedora machine became write-able on the network. This was not the desired effect at all. I am assuming fedora is using a non system-config-samba file share system that I am unfamiliar with. what is it? and how does it work?
is it possible for two users to share a home folder? the idea is to allow for my home directory which is also my web server document root to be shared with another user on the FTP i currently have vsftpd which is set to allow local users to access their home directories but i dont want to give my password away, but i dont mind them having access to the files and folders

1. I cant share a folder on an external USB drive. (I have no problem doing so in UBUNTU)
2. I cannot seem to get Samba Swat to work.

I made sure that xinet was installed and started as well as smb and nmb. I can access other shares on the server just cant get samba swat to work nor can I set up a share on an External USB. I can access it from my side but not my Wifes side. I even made the root of the drive a share like so:

what am i missing or doing wrong? I have a simular set up on a server running UBUNTU 10.10 and it is sharing paths from a USB external. (note: I did not have to share the root of the drive in ubuntu.)
I know that Fedora is not UBUNTU nor GOD willing will it ever be. forgot to mention that firewall is off and i cannot access it even as root
In this post I will give a quick solution for a possible problem with sharing a folder in Fedora 15.I had to spend some time for research and frustration so, hopefully this post will save you from both. If you have Samba installed and configured to share certain folders on your Fedora machine for a Windows network but, they can't be accessed then following might solve the problem:
1. Go to Applications, Other and run FIREWALL
a). go to TRUSTED SERVICES and check SAMBA and SAMBA CLIENT that are located in the list of services
b). click APPLY
c). go to ICMP FILTER and check ECHO REPLY (PONG) and ECHO REQUEST (PING)

When doing some Googling all I could find were forum posts on how to manually configure samba with smb.conf (a place I refuse to go, its 2011 people), and gnome-user-share which only shares ~/Public and doesn't show up on my Windows computer.
I do know that at least in Ubuntu 10.10 with Gnome 2 all I had to do was right click on a folder at click Sharing. I'm looking for similar ease of use in Fedora.
I wan't whatever file/folder that ends up in the public folder to automaticly be open to whosoever access that folder. Right know I have to "chmod -R 777 file/folder.* "

View 2 Replies View RelatedSince I installed fedora on my desktop (there is no other OS on my desktop computer at the moment) I can't connect to my laptop which has Windows XP installed on it, although I can normally connect to internet from both computers. Here is the drawing to illustrate how everything is connected:
On the picture you can see that the phone line goes to the ADSL modem. The ADSL modem is connected to the Wireless modem with LAN cable. Wireless modem is connected to my desktop computer with LAN cable, and trough the wireless connection to the laptop. Internet is working fine for both computers, but desktop can't see laptop and vice versa. What do I need to do in order to see the laptop?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am unable to share a folder on my Ubuntu 9.10 desktop machine. Networking is working, I can see and be seen by windows machines and also my Ubuntu 9.10 laptop. The laptop is able to share folders with no problem. The error message I get when I try to set sharing on a folder is "'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare add: cannot convert name "Everyone" to a SID. Memory allocation error."
I know there has been a thread relating to this in the past, but the solution there did not work for me, and I have been beating my head against the wall for a couple of weeks on this problem, and have spent a bit of time with smb.conf. I would hate to have to do a new install to fix this, after all this is not MS windows!Can anyone point me in the right direction?

View 5 Replies View RelatedEvery time I share a folder (using Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop), the share is gone after I reboot. How can I make it a permanent share that persists?
Note: I used the gui to create the share (if that matters). Once I get the share permanent, the next thing I'll want to do is automatically mount it from another Ubuntu Desktop computer on the network.
Note: this will be a "peer to peer" network. I don't have Ubuntu Server and don't intend to get it. Just have two Ubuntu Desktop computers.

I do not have a file /etc/init.d/samba Has this been replaced by /etc/init.d/smbd ?
Also, I have a /var/lib/samba/usershares folder but it is empty. Is there supposed to be something inside?
I'm trying to figure out a good way to access a folder within a Windows share from an Ubuntu 10.04 computer. I work at a school which uses a Windows network. Each class has one login and a folder for their work. All the folders are in one Windows share called //fses/class$. Each class does not have access to //fses/class$ (otherwise a student from one class would be able to access another class's folder) - they only have access to their own folder e.g. //fses/class$/3b.
When I try to access a class's folder from an Ubuntu computer I get an error that //fses/class$ cannot be accessed. I've got around it for the moment by using a teacher's credentials, but that's not ideal because then the students have access to other classes' work. I also tried using the 'mount' command e.g.
sudo mount -t smbfs -o username=3b,password=**** //fses/class$/3b /media/3b
This did work (although I know it'd be better to use cifs and a credentials file), but only a 'superuser' can do it, and it mounts the folder for all users. I could also give the students superuser permission for the mount command, but this seems like giving them more permission than should really be necessary. Is there any way for a user who is not a superuser to access the folder? I'd like to use something like this.

View 6 Replies View RelatedLately when i open my computer i encountered failed in loading system. its goes like this. Unexpected error, run fsck manually...log in as root. I have to log in as root and type fsck try to fix bad blocks. the mandriva ask me to reboot so i reboot my computer. after loading system, in log in screen. I click my username then type my password and press enter. There is a message prompt on me. "Your home directory is listed as:'/home/Gonzalo' but it does not appear to exist. Do you want to log in with the / (root) directory? it is unlikely anything will work unless you use a failsafe session.
