I know this might seem stupid, but I can't seem to connect my 2 PCs to share a folder (directory)
The both have Fedora 11 and they are connected through a Linksys WRT54G (one on LAN and the other on WiFi)
I can't share my /var/www folder on this machine - it worked fine on my Desktop, it just asked me to install the samba windows something.
What's going wrong with this.

If I go to system - preferences - personal file sharing, I cannot select "share files over the network." The panel is greyed out and the message "This feature cannot be enabled because the required packages are not installed on your computer" is shown
It ever so usefully doesn't tell me what those packages are though! - It'd be nice to have more useful error messages or the ability to click to install them...
Anyway, what do I have to do to get this going again?! I've installed everything to do with samba, webdav that I can find but still no cigar...
I am used to Ubuntus simple sharing with samba. Just install it, reboot and then share the files.Then do I klick on network folder and see all the shared files on the computers in the network.
How do I install it so I only need to go into network folder and see the other computers shared files.Then, how do I share files?

I have a server with Fedora 13 with which I would like to get NFS working. I have looked up multiple howto's and tutorials, but I'm having a problem not addressed by any of them.Official how-to, another how-to, and another how-to.I have verified that nfs-utils, nfs-utils-lib, portmap, and system-config-nfs are installed and running. I have verified that I have, in fact, shared the directory that I want to share, and that the proper permissions are set.
I had to go through some gyrations to get the Belkin wireless N router to allow my server to have a static IP. However, I can ping the server from the nfs client (a toshiba satellite running mint 8), and vice versa. I have (for now) disabled firewalls on both computers. I've just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and Samba 3.4. I've shared a folder and have accessed the share from a Windows 7 client. However, I've struggled to configure the share and folder so that the Win7 client can create files and/or folders in the share. Kept getting Permission Denied errors. Finally, (using Webmin) I set the permissions on the file folder so that "Other" had write access. I don't understand why this was necessary (and how unsecure this is). I already had the write access checkbox ticked for "User" but it wasn't enough.

I have Ubuntu 10.04.1 installed alongside Windows Home premium 7 on a Compaq CQ5110f with 2 dual processors, 320 GB HDD, 4 gb Ram, less than a year old/ It is giving me some error messages. It is wanting to lock the drive or various programs after being left unused for a few minutes, I have not found where I can disable this. I do not need passwords, really. I am the only user. I reinstalled it once, on top of itself (Ubuntu) and it worked fine briefly, then started doing it all again.
I use to sometimes install Ubuntu as a windows app. on a previous version, maybe 9.04 - 9.10, but think I can not do it on this version?
So, Can I install as WIndows app on this version of Ubuntu? CAn I install Ubuntu on one drive alone, and windows on the other drive alone, install both in same computer and get dual booting? I think before, to do that I had to reset boot drives in BIOS to whichever I had the OS I wanted to use?
Or MUST they be installed on same drive for dual booting to be available?
I am attaching screen shots of the messages I get, etc. I have tried to share files and folders, but it does not allow me to select Share this folder as some security thing is not installed, And the time I am required to enter password to use comp[iter after being idle a few minutes, seems to be tied to my folder, which is JOHN. I may have to think about removing Ubuntu from this drive, add a SATA drive and use two, one for Windows and one for Ubuntu.
I install Fedora 11 for file sharing from windows client Win 95/98, Win xp & xp home. I can login from win xp & xp home to access folder but I can't login from win 95/98 to access folder. I made sure that xinet was installed and started as well as smb and nmb. I can access other shares on the server just cant get samba swat to work nor can I set up a share on an External USB. I can access it from my side but not my Wifes side. I even made the root of the drive a share like so:

1. Go to Applications, Other and run FIREWALL
a). go to TRUSTED SERVICES and check SAMBA and SAMBA CLIENT that are located in the list of services

When doing some Googling all I could find were forum posts on how to manually configure samba with smb.conf (a place I refuse to go, its 2011 people), and gnome-user-share which only shares ~/Public and doesn't show up on my Windows computer.
I do know that at least in Ubuntu 10.10 with Gnome 2 all I had to do was right click on a folder at click Sharing. I'm looking for similar ease of use in Fedora.
I am an old Ubuntu user and have just strted running F11 on my iBook. I always run system-config-samba on all my machines including my server and even on my work server which shares with windows, Linux and OSX and have found it to be perfect. I installed it straight away on the new Fedora system but It doesn't seem to be functioning the way i expected it to.
I installed system-config-samba and then set up one share folder "Public" with open read write privileges and then turned off the Fedora Firewall all together. But "public" did not become open until I entered the user password for the fedora machine. But, then I could see all folders on the Fedora machine. Even root on the fedora machine became write-able on the network. This was not the desired effect at all. I am assuming fedora is using a non system-config-samba file share system that I am unfamiliar with. what is it? and how does it work?
F12 / Gnome 2.28.2 I'm just trying to share the /home/Public folder with my Mandriva laptop. The "manual" on Gnome's website doesn't give much info, other than clicking the option to share the folder and deciding whether to use a password or not. There has to be more to it, otherwise it'd work.

Folder on Win7 machine is set to allow access to everyone.In Fedora, I have SELinux disable, I've made sure samba is allowed in the firewall, and that the smb service is running. There's no password on the Win7 computer, so in the Windows Share setting on Fedora I just put the username and left the pass field blank.
I've seen some things say all you have to do is go the the "Network" place...but somehow that seems to have become non-existent and I don't know how to get it back.Also, trying to connect to smb://WinShare/Share results in it saying that the server has timed out.

I followed mjmwired's setup instructions of samba and it WAS working. Saw the share and the printer on the linux box. Move files from the linux machine to Vista machine without problems. I can get the share on my linux box using the linux machine.

I am trying to both access files shared by Windows machines on my network, and I also want to share files on my Fedora 15 box. In Nautilus, if I choose the 'Browse Network' option on the left toolbar, I am shown a Windows Network icon. If I try to double click this, I am given an "Unable to mount location" error. Does anyone know why this is and how to fix it? Further, where is the GNOME 3 option to right click and choose to share a folder? Both KDE 4.5/4.6 and older versions of GNOME (at least on Ubuntu) had this. Is there a way to share files this way, and if not, is there some workaround?
