Fedora :: Change Installation Location ?
Dec 27, 2009
When I started off with fedora 12, I did not think I would be using more than 20GB for the file system. But recently I have been installing a lot of new games / software that have been using up that space. I however have the home directory on a separate partition. What I want to know is whether or not we can change the installation directory when using yum ? I know the other option (installing from source), but that would mean tedious handling of dependencies.

I am unable to change the installation location for the boot loader when installing Fedora 12 in the graphical installation mode. The 'Change device' button does nothing when I click on it during installation. I'd like to install the boot loader on my /boot partition. Is there some kind of bug that is preventing me from doing this?I am trying to install from the Fedora 12 386 DVD.

In gnome-network-properties I've set up two proxy locations: default and remote.
It's a bit of a fag having to change between them via the gui depending on where I am. Can the proxy be changed by command line because then I can set up a script to use the right proxy automatically? - e.g. use remote proxy if my mobile is connected via usb.
Had a google but don't think gnome-network-properties has command line options so I might be approaching this from the wrong tack.

Going from Fedora 12 to 13. Got to the point where I have to reboot to install, system reboots to 12. This is a triple boot system with Open Suse and Mint, and the grub2 bootloader from Mint is the bootloader for the whole shebang. In the "how to use preupgrade" instructions there's a line that says "dentify the drive and partition of your Fedora /boot folder." How? If that sounds odd, consider that in my set up "computer" shows 4 partitions (and with just three operating systems..?). I can mount them, but have a problem telling which sytem is Fedora, Suse or Mint. And getting the FEDORA bootloader to find the PREUPGRADE kernel ... Momma said there'd be days like this.
cat /etc/fstab just returned /dev/sda1 on /boot. I installed Fedora first, before Suse or Mint, so being on the first drive or partition sounds right, but the multiple drives throws me, and "just guessing" doesn't seem like the way to go.

I am trying to do PXE boots for some servers w/o DVD/CD drives. I can do the PXE boot and load the installer boot image, but from there, I would like to have the installation media be from the internet, rather than a locally mounted disc. The boot installer will ask for the location (http or ftp), so is there one out there somewhere?

i try install fedora 10 from cd live. But i can't. the partitions are unable to mount. i recive a message:
Quote:
DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error. No Reply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
And from windows boot, and works. why no mount if the live-cd did this?

Is there a way to change the location that notify OSD uses when it displays a new notification? I have some large dual monitors at work which is great, but I typically do browsing/development work on the left display and leave email and other less used things on the right display. Because notifications are displayed on the right monitor, I often miss the notifications because there are outside of my peripheral vision. I generally notice them within a minute or two because the mail icon in the panel is blue instead of black, but I would rather get the notifications as they occur.
When running 10.10 there was no panel at the top of the right monitor, so all notifications showed up on my left monitor. Since I upgraded to 11.04, Unity seems to display a panel on both monitors and thus, all notifications wind up on the right monitor. I would like them to appear on the left monitor instead.
See attached screenshot for more info. Sorry it's not the best quality -- but the idea is that I ran notify-send "test" in the terminal and you can see the bubble on the right monitor instead of the left one.
So...can the location of the notify OSD be controlled somewhere?

I somehow recalled a rule re the location of the boot partitions with LILO being required to be in the first part of the drive (1024 cylinders, it seems) and I found it indeed in an old doc:
Boot Partition: Your boot partition ought to be a primary partition, not a logical partition. This will ease recovery in case of disaster, but it is not technically necessary. It must be of type 0x83 "Linux native". If you are using lilo, your boot partition must be contained within the first 1024 cylinders of the drive. (Typically, the boot partition need only contain the kernel image.) Is this still valid in GRUB, esp in Fedora 10?

I found out where Ubuntu One downloads music from the music store. /home/user/.local/share/ubuntuone/Purchased from Ubuntu One/ I would like to change this folder to: home/user/Music/ Is this done in RhythmBox or Ubuntu One? Also, I moved the MP3s from the default location and they disappeared from my cloud storage, is it possible to turn this off? With a custom or default location? When does the sync take place? I know its after the purchase but it seems to take a while to start.

I tried to change the sys_call_address to another location in memory. The result was an OOPS!
sys_call_address is of course not exported, so I found it using:
Quote:
grep sys_call_table /boot/System.map-2.6.31-14-generic
c0577150 R sys_call_table
My kernel prog looks like:
Code:
#include <linux/string.h>
#include <linux/smp_lock.h>
#include <linux/init.h>
#include <linux/module.h>
[Code].....

Is there a way to change the mail spool location from /var/mail/ to some other place? I'm thinking of users own home directory or $HOME/.mail.
This is because system partition is not big enough to keep all mail from the company and /home is in a different one.
Creating another partition to keep /var or /var/mail seems too much just to keep emails.
Solution: checking /usr/doc/procmail-x.xx/examples/advanced

We have setup a separate partition to keep our audit files, but I am at a loss to figure out how to redirect the log files to be stored there instead of the default.
I am sure it is a simple matter but I have been unable to locate the information.
