Ubuntu Networking :: How To Setup Wired Internet Connection
Jun 2, 2010I have BIG troubles trying to set up wired internet connection in Ubuntu! To be able to connect to the internet I have to enter my MAC address, 2 IPs, netmask and 2 DNS address. When I try to edit the default internet connection eth0 with my correct information, the minute I enter my MAC address and save the changes the network manager creates new internet connection with wrong data and use it instead! I can't select the correct internet connection from the top bar where the internet icon is, because it is just not there. The only connection that I can choice is the new default one with the wrong data! If I try to create new separate internet connection with my correct data the same thing happens! The moment I enter my MAC address and save it, the internet connection disapears from the list of internet connections in the internet area in the top bar and I can't select it. I tried googling it, but with no luck I think that if I set up my connection trough the terminal everything will be ok

Jan 11, 2011I am running Ubuntu server 10.10 ( i think )i set it up as a LAMP.. apache mysql and php 5.My problem is, when i first set ubuntu up i set it up as dhcp internet and everything worked fine.Now i just upgraded my internet service because my last connection was only 4 mbps.And now i have a static ip. I bought a router, configured the router, and my windows 7 pc works like a charm, but i have no earthly idea how to re-setup the ubuntu server with a new internet connection, the only thing i did notice is the preferred DNS and alternate DNS were loaded onto ubuntu.

Mar 22, 2009I am trying to setup a wireless connection between F10 and a HP J6480. I dnloaded the linux driver hplip-3.9.2, disabled the SELinux and ran the install. When I choose method of connecting - wireless it would not discover the device. The only way was to enable the USB descovery. Doing so, the computer found the printer and all is fine. What am I missing trying to enable the wireless connection. Note, that during this process, the USB was not connected. Also, I dual boot with Vista and I can run the printer wireless.

Its weird because in the livecd I was in "try ubuntu" and it auto connected to my internet... I deleted "auto eth0" to see if it fixed but it didn't I want to know how to connect to my wired internet adsl?

Jan 16, 2011I just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.
Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

I filled in the details such as IP, Netmask, Gateway and even DNS servers. In the services also I ensured that the network manager services is on. However even though my computer cannot connect to the internet. I then tried the ping test of the modem from the address 192.168.1.1 and found that the ping test is successful. Then i tried the network administrator and there I noticed something unusual.
There are two options in the devices eth0 and eth1 thats ok but the unusual; thing is that the Activate (green button), Deactivate (red button) and even the delete buttons are in the background and I cannot select them. Isthis the problem for the network connectivity.

Feb 17, 2009I am a windows user with no linux experience prior to Friday. Im setting up a music server (SqueezeCenter) running Fedora 10.
With the help of posts of this site Ive made good progress with complicated stuffnamely getting Samba and VNC working. My Fedora machine and my windows machines now see each others shared files, and I can control my Fedora machine from my windows machine. (The Fedora machine will ultimately be headless.)
But Im having trouble with a seemingly simple issue setting up my Fedora box with a static IP address. With DHCP enabled on my network Ethernet adapter, all works fine. I then used the System>Administration>Network menu to disable DHCP and to assign the same IP address that DHCP chose. When I do this, two cases need to be distinguished:
1. If I keep the box checked for Controlled by Network Manager, the Network Manager Applet reports a network connection, I nevertheless cannot access the internet, but my Fedora machine is able to communicate with my Squeezebox music player (connected to my network via my DSL modem Ethernet connections, and with a fixed IP address). 2. If I uncheck the box Controlled by Network Manger, then the Network Manager Applet reports no network connection and my Fedora machine is not able to communicate with my Squeezebox music player (and I of course have no internet connectivity).
Ive seen references on other posts suggesting that the Network Manager service be disabled. But I see no way to manually configure the network.

It ran with ndiswrapper.1.51.
Yesterday I installed the live-CD Fedora 10 on a new partition in another hard drive and so I have Fedora 10 but WITHOUT Internet connection.
I tried to install Ndiswrapper but the 'make' command doesn't exist in my Fedora 10 !
What are all the things I need to download from Internet to ensure the several commands like 'make uninstall', 'make', 'make install'... and to ensure installing Ndiswrapper ?

My Intended Setup is as follows;
The Problem: So far I've not been able to get an internet connection from any computer connected to the HUB. I currenty have Fedora 13 on PC1 but have also tried with both Ubuntu 10.04 & Debian Lenny. I am open to using any Linux based distro on PC1 as long it has a Gnome Desktop. eth0 on PC1 can be Static or Dhcp, but I would prefer to set Static IPs on eth1 & all of the Client PCs
To the best of my knowledge I have enabled ipv4 forwarding in sysctl.conf (& some other changes);

All changes I made to the Firewall (all other Firewall settings are still at default, no custom rules added yet);
Router is set up to assign dhcp from 192.168.xxx.100 & 192.168.xxx.200
At the moment I have only 1 PC attached to the HUB. It's Ubuntu 10.04 (PC2)

ip 192.168.xxx.103
netmask255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.xxx.101
Thus Far I can't ping 192.168.XXX.103 from PC1 & I can't ping 192.168.XXX.101 from PC2. (unreachable) I have an internet connection on PC1 (of course)
Fedora Networking :: F13 Dropping Internet Connection And Not Reconnecting
Sep 26, 2010I am running F13 on my Desktop (with a Ralink RT2870 wireless card) and also on my Laptop (Acer Aspire 5738Z) and am connecting to the internet via a NetGear router. On my Laptop I can connect to the internet fine with no problems. However on my Desktop when I turn my computer on it connects to the internet fine, and works, however after some time (maybe 5-10 minutes) it disconnects and the box asking for the password reappears, then I click connect but no joy.
The connection box just keeps reappearing and it won't connect again until I restart the computer (although sometimes it takes more than 1 restart!). This is not a signal issue, as my Desktop also has a Windows partition and that connects to the internet fine and does not drop off. I have installed the RT2870 driver through rpmfusion, which didn't fix the problem, although uninstalling the driver didn't stop the card from working.
