Ubuntu :: Get A Handle On Starting / Stopping And Managing Processes?
Sep 17, 2010I'm trying to get a handle on starting/stopping and managing processes. I was playing around with rcconf and things I disabled (or enabled there) didn't take effect. I found the initctl command, so that led me to believe I'm using Upstart instead of all the rc and init directories. Is there any way to tell? Could I be running both? I'm running an Ubuntu 10.04 server.

Mar 22, 2011I have 13.1 as a dual boot with xp on a 40G hd. There is a 500G hd where I keep all my files, in ntfs format, and I have usb sticks in fat32 and ntfs. When I installed 13.1 I chose read and write access for all users for all of these media. 13.1 will read from them, but will not write to them. How can I fix this?

I decided to merge them into one partition so I did this with cfdisk by deleting them creating and creating 1 large fat32 partition with the free space. When I boot my machine I am presented with:

I used the fedora cd to "rescue a broken system" and everything seems fine? I didn't touch any partition besides my extra fat32 partitions and my /boot partition is bootable. How do I tell this minimalistic grub to use my normal grub.conf?

Mar 22, 2009I have just recovered my desktop Ubuntu system, thanks to SuperGrub, and Larryfroot, who pointed me to it. It had crashed due to an incomplete install to a pen drive, but prior to this I had made some changes to my partition layout, and now if such moves could cause the problems I'm having now.I wanted to be able to access my pictures, music, and projects while testing different Linux distros from CD or pen drive (DreamLinux looks much like the Mac interface, which I like, it's rated for speed, gotta try), but I've not been able to do that from any which I've tried yet. I learned somewhere that replacing the unused bulk of the OS partition with a big FAT32, and moving your files to that drive should make them accessible to most systems. I just viewed my files from the DreamLinux distro CD, so it seems to be working. I knew the action on this type of partition would be slower, and it really is when I move files to it, so is there a better way to get what I want than this?I have since had the following annoyances from Ubuntu's Nautilus file browser, and am wondering if the drive changes had anything to do with the following:
1. I am getting error messages when I try to move files to this drive through the Nautilus GUI file browser, but then these errors are wierdly negated when the file transfer is performed anyway. Well, I should be happy that it does what I ask, but where are these false error messages coming from?
2. It gets even more strange - when viewing files on Fat32 through Nautilus, in my Ubuntu hard drive partition, the file window has a banner which states "These files are on a Picture CD". Huh??? I know where I moved my files to, and they are not on CD! What is a "Picture CD" anyway?
Can anyone find a logical explanation for these weird messages, or does it look as much to you like corruption damage?

I have 84GB free space on this hard drive and want to install another distro. Will I be able to create another / and /home partitions for the new distro?
OpenSUSE Install :: Mount FAT32 Partitions By UUID Fails?
Dec 27, 2009I have a mounting rack in which I try to plug in various HDDs. Now, all of them have vfat. Blkid returns something like:
/dev/sda7: UUID="4B16-F1E8" TYPE="vfat" The UUID looks abnormally short to me. I found no way to obtain a longer, typical UUID, and when I set Yast2 partitioner to mount by UUID, it sees and it successfully uses the short UUID. Yast2 even adds it to /etc/fstab like this: UUID=4B16-F1E8 /windows/C vfat users,gid=users,umask=0002,utf8=true 0 0 However, this short UUID is useless in /etc/fstab. It doesn't work at boot time and it doesn't work when I try to mount manually. xxxxx:~ # mount /windows/C mount: special device UUID=4B16-F1E8 does not exist. Also, one cannot find these short UUIDs in /dev/disk/by-id/.
For a billion reasons, I really want to mount these FAT32 partitions by UUID. Do I have any way to do it?

I was thinking on Fedora, Centos, Ubuntu, Debian, Gentoo, Slackware, OpenSuse, . Who can give me some advice how many partitions to create ? (what size and what filesystem) Can I share partitions between different distro's ? (to reduce the number of partitions to create).

Jun 15, 2011Is there a simple way to delete an existing Linux Distro install so you can install a new version or distro in the partitions where a current one resides? We have several laptops, all of which are at least dual boot with Windows and with a Linux Distro. A few have Windows and two Linux Distros.
What we want and need to do, without disturbing the Windows install is simply remove a current Linux install and replace it with another install, a simple way. We cannot find a simple Partition command of eliminate install or install over existing install. Since the movement in Linux community for four years now is "easy", "simple", and "user friendly" you would think Ubuntu project would by now have a simple, low risk way of doing this. The delete and expand specific partitions method is very risky (to the O/S installs one wished to keep intact) and requires more partition study than all but a few people have interest or time to invest in.
Anyone know of a simple way to replace an install. What puzzles us is why Ubuntu has not come up with a simple command that allows users to replace one Ubuntu version with another, or at least uninstall back to a previous install when a user finds the new version tanks his system and requires hours of study to figure out how to get his basic hardware up and running.
I realize that Linux community members tend to accept criticism about as gracefully as a Republican or a Democrat but progress cannot happen without constructive or well meaning criticism. For those so tempted, please spare me the "stupid", "its easy idiot", "Works fine on my PC" or "this is the best of all possible worlds" replies.

And then the only program that recognices the device is Clementine and it works quite fine. What I'd like to do is to make that automaticaly, so I wouldn't have to do it everytime i turn on my computer.

May 24, 2011I just narrowly passed another exam on UNIX Academy. Their DVDs are incredible. While I made some mistakes here and there.I was really stumbled upon a question that was formulated something like "SNMP for managing Linux machines remotely".I can't remember the exact definition. I'm not sure what it was about.I was under impression that SNMP it is a carrier protocol for commands like "ping" and "traceroute". I was trying to read about it online but it is way too broad and technical, they're loosing me on very first page. I suspect there's some kind of product or technology that uses SNMP in some way to handle Linux, I'm not sure.

The problem is that the language list is huge, what makes switching between the languages difficult. There are more than 20 types of English spelling and 3 Duch spellings (see the screen-shot).

General :: Fat32 Vs NTFS For Shared Partition
Jun 19, 2010I dual boot, in the process of installing Windows 7 & Fedora 13 on a new drive. Back in the day when it was risky for the newbie to read/write NTFS, I created a "shared" FAT32 partition. Even though the later Fedoras could read/write NTFS fresh out of the box, I have kept the "shared" partition for my important files (email, documents, digital camera pics).
Now that I'm installing Win7 and Fedora 13 on a new hard drive and I'm partitioning my disk, I'm scratching my head trying to decide how I should format this partition. I was considering the FAT32 again, but I'd like 50GB, not just 32. At the same time, I'm thinking of making the size sacrifice because, and maybe this is just carryover from the olden days and groundless, I have an irrational worry about using NTFS for my most important files.Maybe someone could assuage my fears. Is it just as safe, at this point, for files to be on a NTFS partition and run under Fedora as they are under FAT32?

I'm on a netbook, and i want to delete Fedora and install BAckTrack instead. and without a CD/DVD drive or really much free money, i gotta use my iPod to do this.

Dec 15, 2010Lubuntu is nice - but it seems the LXDE version is not as up to date as Fedora LXDE Spin or even Debian squeeze with LXDE installed. I do like Chromium on Lubuntu though... its faster and a nice touch. I am looking for a lightweight 64-bit distribution for my main laptop (it is by no means "old" or "low spec" but I like that Lubuntu starts up in like 2 secs).
LXDE version seems not to be recent (esp in 10.04 version which seems to work more stably for me - with Nvidia drivers etc)64 bit install is currently a pain - requires first install of minimal CD or alternate CD both of which required wired Ethernet, then install of lubuntu from PPA. Native 64-bit support would be nice. Linux Mint LXDE, for example, is also only 32-bit.

At the moment it opens with files only being readable and writable by the user but I would like other uses to be able to read and to write to files (i.e. I use Apache to serve a site from the stick for development purposes).If it matters I am running Jolicloud on a netbook.

Jan 29, 2010Since last last week i've installed Windows 7 and OpenSuSe 11.2 linux several time in my laptop. Each time i do something and Linux boot menu disappears and i again install both operating system. I have installed linux for the first time 6 days before in my life.
I am trying to live without windows. I know i can't for more few months as there is problem in every step for me.
Now i have both os running perfectly and boot menu appearing perfectly.
There are 3 partitions in FAT32 created while installing linux for Windows files. Now i want to change it in to NTFS. All drive are empty.
##1 Is it ok if i reformat it in windows 7 and change to NTFS?
##2 Does it creates problem in GRUB boot menu?
##3 Is there any way to do this from Linux without any problem?
##4 Is there any way to change FAT32 into NTFS without affecting GRUB?
I'm tired by installing again and again. I don't want any more trouble for next 1 month.
General :: Lower-casing Filenames On Fat32 External Drive
Jan 6, 2010I have an external harddrive which is fat32 (which was filled when I was on a windows system) with a lot of files on (> 200gb) which have mixed case filenames. I wanted to write a script to rename them all to lowercase however when I did I got an error saying that the filenames are the same (which I guess is true as FAT is case-insensitive). My issue is that I'm mounting this from a linux box now so it would make it a lot easier if things were lower case! I've already run a script to replace all spaces with underscores.
I know I could do this by first going through and renaming everything with a prefix and then renaming it back again (ie, rename File.Jpg to xFile.Jpg and then a second rename to strip that x off and rename lowercase to file.jpg) however I find this approach a bit messy and would prefer to do it all in one pass. Other than that, could I change the drive to ext4 without losing any files on it? The drive has a hell of a lot of stuff on there which is an archive of many years of files - I'd be absolutely gutted if I lost everything.

Jan 21, 2010I loaded Ubuntu 8.4 on a data drive (second drive no OS) from a Windows XP-SP3 system. I MEANT to load it on the main XP OS drive. Bottom line I formatted a FAT-32 with Ubuntu 8.4. Can I (freeware hopefully) roll back the Ubuntu formatted drive to FAT-32 so I can recover my data?

Rather than hook the external USB drive up to my PC and manually copy it all across the network, can I just plug it in to one of my USB ports on the server and rsync it?I know how to do the rsync, I just don't know how to get the USB drive to show up when I do a df -h and how to properly remove it before unplugging it from the server. this is a live server, so I can't go playing around and possibly mess something up.

My process has been to work through errors that occur due to missing packages, then remove the distribution and build it again to uncover what happens.One thing I notice is different sets of warnings within each iteration of making a new build. From the document here (URl...it states, "A typical warning involves a variable being used before its value has been set."
So my question: is there a way to verify that the issue throwing the warning has been resolved by the end of the make build?And, is running make build again an option or could this cause problems within the build directories or image?
