Fedora :: Is Konsole Most Feature Rich Terminal?
Jun 16, 2011
I've been looking for a alternative terminal to work in while using F15. I've done some Googleing and came across Konsole as being the most feature rich terminal. I'd like a terminal that provides a lot of features so I could possibly increase my efficiency. If something is KDE like Konsole does that mean I have to install the whole KDE environment? If so is there any Fedora terminal alternatives?

Could you suggest feature-rich disk-based personal backup program for Linux (and I've seen a few)?
I want to do nightly backups of the whole system and be able to rollback to any of last 7 days. And, it must be incremental backups. What tool should I use? The tutorials I've read about rsync tell only how to store latest incremental backup and I need last 7.

I notice that in 11.4 when I try to autocomplete (Tab Key) to /etc or /etc/init.d/ it auto completes differently than the way it did in other 11.x openSUSE versions. i.e.
Code:
sudo /et
Then hit tab; it auto completes to /etc (space on the end of it)
Also,
Code:
sudo /etc/init.
Then hit tab; it auto completes to /etc/init.d (space on the end of it)
If I simply try:
Code:
/et
Then hit tab; it auto completes properly to /etc/

Does anyone know what happened to the Multiseat feature that had been in the feature list at one point? To briefly summarise, a single machine with multiple graphics cards, sound cards, keyboards & mice provides multiple seats for users. Each user gets their own monitor, keyboard, mouse & perhaps audio. The rest of the machine resources are then shared.
The last I saw on the topic was this discussion, although I have a recollection that there was going to be support in a newer version of X.Org. I've googled around quite a bit, but can't seem to find anything.
Anybody know anything? It would be a great feature to have and it's frustrating to have had such an omission since F8 :-o

At yesterday night i run a slackpkg update and then slackpkg upgrade-all. i deselect all kernel related entries, and all others ( dont remeber precisely, but approx 15 - 20 packages, i e kde related) i get to update.
After that i shut system down and going to sleep. today i start my eeepc 900 with slackware 13.0 after that update and see i cannot run "Terminal" link on desktop. ok, go to "start", "system", "konsole terminal". from first look in konsole window i see whatever not ok - window background is grey, not black as usual.
when i run mc in this window, look like a monitor contrast is set to minimum, and brightness to maximum - very hard to see files, etc. all is very much light and small contrast.
I check kde windows - all its ok, brightness and contrast in konkueror windows and overall is ok -as same as previously times. i switch to ctrl-alt-f6 to native console - again, all is ok - background is black, all is ok.
i e problem is only with Konsole-Terminal under KDE. looks for configfiles / etc - nothing faund. no man entry for terminal nur console.

I know this is strictly a KDE problem, but I don't want to create another account anywhere and get the KDE spam, etc.
But if anybody who reads this list has the ear of (or is) a KDE person, a minor bitch with KDE in 13.0 and 13.1 is that if you were using Konsole terminals at the time of shutting down KDE, when next you start KDE, it replaces them with Terminal Emulators.

When I open a terminal or konsole window, output (either STDOUT or STDERR) sometimes contains funny characters instead of something meaningful. Can someone explain how I might correct this situation?
ANALYSIS:
One very repeatable example involves using the manual page command
Code:
man set... man page output ...upstart - event-based init daemon
In my copy of the output, there are several problems in the very first screen. In the synopsis section, there is "{ value | ?value? ..." Replace the '?' with a lower-case-a-under-a-carat character (a-hat).
I suspect the garble character might be apostrophe in real life.
In other places, I see var?/able or how?/ever or trans?/action where the '?' is again a-hat and the '/' represents end of line or newline. I suspect the garble character might be a hyphen in real life.
All of this suggests that there is a conflict between the character stream written to STDOUT by the man command and the character-display settings (is that "code page" or similar?) of the specific terminal or konsole in use.
In specific, I use konsole v1.6.6 from KDE v3.5.10. In general, I'm running Ubuntu Hardy (v8.04.3 LTS).

For some reason my gnome-terminal is starting in / when it should be ~ I have checked /etc/profile, ~/.bashrc and /etc/passwd and everything seems fine as far as i can tell Konsole and xterm are starting up with the working dir to my home dir (as set by /etc/passwd) But im at a loss to see where gnome-terminal is starting in / if i enter cd with no argumants in gnome-terminal it is switching to ~ fine, so i dont think its mistaking my home dir for /

I am trying to write a bash script that would save the current state of my konsole terminals and sessions. I'm using KDE3.X and for some reason the "profile" save does not save the current working directories... Anyway, I would like to know if there is an elegant way to obtain the current workdir of each terminal and session ? I've managed to do something with a clever use of DCOP extended functions, but it requires me to start every konsole with the --script option enabled, and I don't want to do that.

I noticed a few days ago, that history feature is not working on my ubuntu 10.10 notebook edition terminal. I mean I enter a bunch of commands today and then shut down. Come back again tomorrow and turn on the machine and open the terminal, but up and down arrows won't bring any old commands that I used today.

I noticed that if I have "exit" in a bash script file., e.g. script.sh,that when the word "exit" is reached, and the script file being executed is not in the PATH nvironment, i.e. ". script.sh", the whole konsole shell profile is exited! What gives here? Is there another command compatible to "exit" to prevent this, or will I just have the leave the "." part in the PATH enviroment, which is, to my understanding, is not recommended? I desire for a "goto" function in bash script files

socat - exec:'bash -li',pty,stderr,ctty -> bash: no job control in this shell
What options should I use to get fully fledged shell as I get with ssh/sshd? I want to be able to connect the shell to everything socat can handle (SOCKS 5, UDP, OpenSSL), but also to have a nice shell which correctly interprets all keys, various Ctrl+C/Ctrl+Z, tab completion, up/down keys (with remote history).
- Found "setsid" socat option. It fixes "no job control". Now trying to fix Ctrl+D.
- socat file:`tty`,raw,echo=0 exec:'bash -li', pty, stderr, setsid, sigint, sane. Not it handles Ctrl+D/Ctrl+Z/Ctrl+C well, I can start Vim inside it, remote history is OK.

How can rich text or HTML source code be obtained from the X clipboard? For example, if you copy some text from a web browser and paste it into kompozer, it pastes as HTML, with links etc. preserved. However, xclip -o for the same selection just outputs plain text. I'd like to pull the HTML out and into a text editor.

and found that most of relevant complaints was about
a bug in video card driver.
My problem is -
For some unknown reason, I can't resize the Konsole window horizontally while I can still resize vertically. This is bad as the corrent width of Konsole window fills the entire screen!

How do I have an auto completion feature for scp? I often need to 'scp ' a file to a remote server, then I type:
PHP Code:
scp someprogram paulga@pinherstforestrain.math.edu
I'd begin to type tab before or after the input of @. But the available choices are mainly:
@localhost6, @localhost.localdomain, @localhost, etc..
Which file records these hosts name? Second, to execute a program in current directory, I have to type ./program, how can I omit the prefix, or I could type it as I type "octave",etc.

I am trying to set up a simple script to automatically invoke streamripper to record my favourite radio shows. The script works fine in a terminal window (Konsole), but when scheduling this as a cron job (KCron via SystemSettings) a Konsole window pops up catching the streamripper output.
Now stramripper can behave with the --quiet option, and I set output redirects "> /dev/null 2>&1". Inside the script or on the command line of KCron.
Quote:
sh myscript.txt >/dev/null 2>&1
...or just as the script without the "sh" command. Same result. Still the same annoying Konsole terminal window pops up, now with no other content than what Cron obviously generates at the end of the script execution:
Quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
End of script execution. Type Enter or Ctrl+C to exit.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, the whole point of this cron scheduling was to avoid manual intervention and create the MP3 file of the radio show automatically. how to avoid the terminal window completely?
Using KDE 4.5.5 and Fedora 13, Kernel 2.6.34.8-68

I think a version control system should be integrated by default into the user's documents directory. Any time a file is saved, the app would check to see if there is another file by the same name, and if there is, make a hidden copy of the previous version with name such as ".filename.[datestamp]" . This would be similar to what gEdit already does, but at a broader level.
A more robust system would include controls for watching more directories. It would also show comparisons with previous versions of the document. Being file based, it wouldn't care if unneeded backup files are destroyed.
If file space is an issue, backup files would only contain the differences between the next and previous versions. This would mean, however, that back-up files would be useless if a few are irretrievable.
Obviously, users would be able to turn this app on or off, if they don't need/desire this feature.
