Fedora Installation :: Prompt To Upgrade From F10 To F11?
Oct 20, 2009
Im running fedora10 and have installed quite a few extra apps etc that are not from yum. Things like vmware workstation, Lotus notes, crossover etc. Every now an then I get a popup asking to upgrade to fedora 11. I do want to move onto 11 but does this way of upgrading work well or is there a better way to upgrade. I was thinking of making an image on my laptop first but have not found a good image tool that allows me to save and restore an image to a network.

After upgrade to 10.10, I only get the command prompt. Fortunately, all my XP Pro machines are running, and I am using one of them to access this Forum. I suspect that nVidia graphics driver did not load correctly. running startx at the command line gives numerous lines of text apparently understandable xorg gurus. It looks like nvidia_drv.so did not load and module "nvidia" did not load [loader failed, 7] and next line says no drivers loaded.

I installed 10.04 clean on the PC.Not other operating system. It booted to Ubuntu fine after the install and all appeared to be working fine.Used the upgrade manager to install the upgrades to the basic system.I had not yet loaded in any non-ubuntu or medibuntu repositories so this was the first, basic upgrade. After the upgrade,I can no longer boot to Ubuntu but boot to a grub prompt instead.I presume this is a recover prompt. How do I "recover" and continue booting to Ubuntu?

I'm running Ubuntu within VMWare on a Macbook. I followed these steps [URL]... Recommended) to upgrade form 10.04 to 11.04, which actually upgraded to 10.10 first, and then a graphical upgrade brought me to the 11.04 upgrade, but then i ran into the problem where a grub> prompt appears when i start up the machine... nothing else happens. I found this thread [URL] which seemed similar to my problem, but the suggestions didn't work.
Code:
grub> ls
(hd0) (hd0,5) (hd0,1) (fd0)
grub> boot
error: no loaded kernel.
grub> linux
error: no kernel specified.
that's what I see. any way to resolve this without having to download the CD and start from scratch? It's grub 1.98, if that's important to know.

I decided to upgrade my FC installation to the latest version - FC itself offered the upgrade when I turned the machine on, so it appeared that it was nicely packaged to make the upgrade easy. After a long download of packages, the machine rebooted and then started taking me through configuration options (timezone, disks to use for the installation etc) but then it crashed trying to write to disk and now leaves me at a grub prompt whenever I boot.Is there any way to "get at" the installation files and get back into trying to install or do I now need to download an ISO and burn a DVD and start all over again?

I'm trying to install F11 in my new laptop [URL] and I'm unfortunately about to give up, but I want to give this option. What I want to do is use the live cd (on a usb stick) to boot on a text-only session. Supposedly the way to do that is type "linux text" on the boot prompt but the problem is that I can't even get there. After booting I get the grub menu with two options: boot, and verify and boot. Hitting esc doesn't bring me to the boot prompt. I can get to the grub menu, but I'm not sure what to do from there. And I can edit the boot and kernel options, but I'm not sure whether that will allow me to log in a text-only session.

Just tried to install a minimal F13 from the first CD. Picked minimal as the choice and it still asked for CD #1 and #2. I'll have to doublecheck if that can be averted by manually unchecking everything. However, a bit more disturbing--though that's annoying enough--was the fact that I, on a VM at least, couldn't get to a bash prompt during the anaconda installation. Is that normal now? Can anyone confirm or correct that on an actual hardware install, vs. a VM?
One used to be able to, with F5, or maybe F1, IIRC, get to, during a Fedora installation, a shell prompt, the way the vast majority of distributions do. I'm wondering if this is just an oddity due to the VM and possibly Fkeys not working properly, or something else that they've taken away from from Anaconda.

I finally got my system to boot to a console prompt. This is a fresh installation of fc10 that I have struggled to get working with my old Adaptec 2940 scsi hardware. I am a little fuzzy on the whole gtk, gdm, gnome thing. So how do I go from this console prompt to configuring the new installation with desktop? So let's say I am logged on as root on the console.

It disappears too fast! I'm using the netinstall spin of the Fedora 13 x64 disk. As far as I know, I still need to tell it to load Anaconda from the network. Is that correct? Anaconda loads from the CD, but I would prefer to use the downloaded image. Should I just let Anaconda go through its paces then tell it where I downloaded the image to on my network?
The documentation is woefully inadequate when it comes to using the netinst spin (yes, I am already thinking about providing help on the install docs based upon my experiences).

I am a casual user of Ubuntu, which is installed in a vmware virtual machine. After upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04, and after the reboot, it just booted up to a grub prompt.
I found a useful post about resolving this problem here: [URL]
The sequence of grub shell commands to be entered are these: set root=(hdX,Y) linux /vmlinuz root=/dev/sdZ ro initrd /initrd.img bootwhere the X, Y, and Z are replaced with appropriate letters/numbers.
The problem that I am having is that TAB is not completing the commands at the grub shell, thus I have no idea what the letters/numbers to use.
My installation is completely generic - I have not customized it in any way. check their vmware/Ubuntu system and let me know what letters/numbers to use.

building an install cd or dvd media that will automatically install the Linux software on a client pc. There is no network connectivity so the client can only be loaded with Linux from CD or DVD media. The crux of the matter is that I can not automatically install the Linux software on client WITHOUT typing linux ks=cdrom:/ks.cfg at the boot prompt.
I want to avoid any user prompts and just have the software install with the RPMS that I need for this client pc at the boot prompt. Actually, when the boot prompt commences, I would like the software install to start with no user intervention. I've tried several different methods in isolinux.cfg, but the OS always wants boot prompt for the cdrom. Can the boot prompt information be read automatically from the isolinux.cfg with out user intervention? I'm looking for the same behavior as a LIVE CD that kicks off with no boot prompts after a few seconds. Here's a copy of my isolinux.cfg
default linux
prompt 1
timeout 600
display boot.msg
F1 boot.msg
F2 options.msg
F3 general.msg
F4 param.msg
[Code]....

Is there any other way to do this besides downloading the DVD and installing?

I'm running Red Hat Linux 5.4 on HP DL580 server with 16 processors and 64 GB of RAM. I'm connecting to the server remotely through SSH. after entering the password, it takes time to return the command line, if I click ctrl+c during this time, I'll have the command line prompt but not the correct bash prompt (I have to run bash to pass to my correct prompt).I tried to install Apache on the server, ./configure took 4 hours to finish instead of 1 or two minutes, Oracle installation same behavior. Server Disks are mirrored using RAID controller.

I've tried to upgrade my FC8 on Presario F700 series laptop to FC 10 and facing some issues. I've a live CD (i386). Initially i tried upgrading FC 8 to FC 10 and installation was stuck around 30% completion saying its unable to fins libdbi-0.8.3-1.fc9.i386.rpm. Then I tried to install FC 10 from scratch as system went to inconsistent state and faced two issues with two different setup options -
1) when i selected necessary software to be installed for office use and development, it failed after installing 20% saying libgnomeui-devel-2.24.0-2.fc10.i386.rpm
2) i then opted for for software to be installed for office use (default option) then it failed after installing around 50% saying libXrandr-1.2.3-1.fc10.i386.rpm
im trying to understand if this is a problem due to my laptop configuration (AMD Athlon 64 X2 Duel Core) or due to issue with the live CD.

I was wondering if there was an easy way to do a fresh install from an old Fedora without using any media ? Maybe there is a possibility to boot the netinstall.iso from grub ?Or tweaking preupgrade to do an installation instead of an upgrade..

I keep getting the following msg as I try to upgrade from 10.04 -> 10.10 ... "Could not calculate the upgrade An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages. This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report." I don't think any of the issues above apply - can anyone offer advice on how to get around or "force " the upgrade

I again followed the instructions below (actually, I started with Step 6), and this time after the initrd.img was downloaded, the installer jumped into its graphical mode where I was prompted if I wanted to perform a fresh installation of F10 or an upgrade. Of course, I chose the latter. Now the installer is "starting the install process".
I attempted to upgrade my F9 system this evening to F10 using a Network Install (aka Media-less Install), but without success. I followed these instructions (which I pieced together):
Code:
Instructions: [URL]
FTP site: [URL]
1. Download vmlinuz and initrd.img from FTP site listed above
2. Rename vmlinuz to /boot/vmlinuz-install
3. Rename initrd.img /boot/initrd.img-install
4. Edit /boot/grub/grub.conf to contain:
[code]....

About installation, I run into a problem every time I try to upgrade from Fed 10 to Fed 11 using the DVD (at the point when the installer examines the system for HD configuration).
How can one upgrade from Fedora 10 to Fedora 11 using the DVD as a source (i.e. local repository) ? I tried Googling for this, but almost all of them mention upgrade using pre-upgrade through the Internet. Using DVD will also save me considerable bandwidth and time.

I'd like to upgrade from F11 to F12 using the upgrade DVD. I'm a little shell shocked from my F11 upgrade though. I've upgraded in the past with no problems, but, I don't know if I misintrepreted the instructions or what, but, I wound up losing all my existing files. I know it's good practice to have multiple partitions, but, I'd prefer not to make new partitions. I'm not dual booting with Windows or anything, strictly Fedora.

Yesterday I used preupgrade to upgrade my computer from Fedora 13 to 15. It got caught in the install with the openjpeg-devel issue(URL...) and had to install a new kernel manually to get the system to boot. After that, the system booted fine, to a graphical interface, Gnome 3. I switched gnome 3 to fallback mode, and then ran a package-cleanup -cleandupes, due to the hiccup in the install, most of the fedora 13 packages were still around as duplicates. After that I restarted.
Thinking that the problem was possibly with the nouveau driver, I installed the nvidia drivers.Other than flashing the "nvidia" logo, I got the same result.I finally uninstalled nvidia, blacklisted nouveau, and configured X to run with vesa, again with the same result. Without any error messages to search for, I don't know what else to try.
