Fedora Installation :: Netbook - Fails To Boot From SDHC

Jun 18, 2009

Anyone succeed with f11 install on netbook (/ on SDHC, /boot on primary SSD/HDD drive)?
My netbook (AAO) works just fine with f11 Live-on-usb-sick (created with live-usb-creator), but fails to boot fedora from SDHC.

Fedora Hardware :: Aspire One (A110) Suspend Fails With SDHC Card In LH Slot.

Dec 25, 2009

F12 on my aspire one (A110, the original 8Gb SSD model) works well with only one significant problem.

Suspend fails; the screen fades to black, backlight stays on, macine stops responding to keyboard/mouse/powerswitch and just hangs (for at least an hour... longest I left it). Only thing that works is a 5 second click of death on the powerswitch. Plus an FSCK on at least one occasion after reboot. I have not been able to check if SSH and shutdown possible (on vacation) plus have logs go to a tmpfs (to save my SSD) so no log info. Similarly I cannot confirm if this affects hibernate because I run without a swapfile (SSD again, i.5Gb ram installed and I have never come even close to running out of memory).

But I think I have the culprit anyway:[url]

As described there; shutdown fails if there is a mounted card in the cardreader slot (/dev/mmcblk0) My system has a 4Gb SDHC card in the LH slot with a single XFS filesystem; which has my homedir on it; if I unmount that filesystem (but do not remove the card) shutdown and restore appear to work properly. But if the filesytem is mounted I get the bsod. Linked bug suggests this is restricted to large filesystems (?SDHC?) but I have not fully confirmed, although that matches my situation.

Posting here to see if anyone has any further info/workarounds, to ensure the fedora crew are aware that this appears to affect F12 (and is a regression, F11 suspended fine) and make sure it is documented somewhere. The linked bug also states similar bad suspend activity on other netbooks.

I'll try some other variations (and see if it also happens with USB sticks/RH cardrader, and report back here.

Fedora Installation :: Using A SDHC Card For The /home Partition ?

Jul 16, 2009

When installing Fedora 11 (Gnome, from live CD), is it possible to use a SDHC card for the /home partition?

The reason I'm asking: having heard that Fedora 11 should support the EeePC 701, I decided to try the installation, following this guide. I created the partitions as in the guide, with the exception that in the place of a 16 gb secondary SSD I have a 16 gb SDHC card. The installation ends in an unhandled exception.

I tried various different partitioning systems, always however putting the /home partition on the SDHC card, because if I select only the machine's 4 gb SSD to be used in the installation, I'm told that there is insufficient space. Whatever I try, I always get the unhandled exception error. So, I'm wondering if this is due to trying to use the SDHC card for the /home partition.

I'm afraid I didn't save the error message details, and since installed OpenSUSE on the eeePC, but this started bugging me.

Fedora Installation :: Booting From Memory Card SDHC ?

Oct 24, 2009

I would like to install fedora onto a memory card 16Gb kingstone SDHC that I use in a ACER aspire one

I followed the instruction on the website and I found the following problem:

The wireless and Ethernet hardware where either not found or, if they were found, they did't work and there were no possibilities to make it work.

The strange thing is that almost every time after I attempted to boot form the memory when booting window as usual, the Ethernet hardware was not found anymore also under window!

Fedora Installation :: F11-install From External DVD Using Boot.img CD Fails?

Jul 24, 2009

I have sevral older machines that cannot boot from usb. Until now I have installed fedora using the provided boot.iso on a CD and an external USB dvd drive with the full install DVD.

With Fedora 11, this fails. It gets as far as "finding storage devices" and fails, telling me that an unhandled exception has occured. It offers to save the details, but freezes looking for a suitable location. I have no such problems with the same DVD/external rw drive on systems that can boot directly from usb.

Fedora Installation :: Preupgrades Fails If /boot Full?

Nov 22, 2010

I started preupgrade with a 200M /boot partition 50% full. According to the instructions, it is supposed to give me the option of downloading the stage2 installer later. It doesn't, and crashes horribly (see below). This worked from FC12 to FC13. Reparititioning will take a day because the FC12 kindly made the root file system LVM and nothing will resize it. (I tried this with FC11 -> 12 and ended up losing everything and rebuilding the 1T disk).

Code:
$ sudo preupgrade

Fedora Installation :: Installing On A SDHC Card - Installer Appears To Want To Install To Both SD Card And Also USB Stick

Jul 21, 2010

I have an EeePC 4g netbook which only has a 4Gb hard drive and I thought I would like to install Fedora 13 on an 8 Gb SDHC card and use it to boot the netbook.

As neither the netbook nor I have an optical drive, I made a bootable USB memory stick using Unetbootin which boots the netbook and could be used like a live CD to install Fedora.

On booting with the live USB stick, with the blank SD card in place, and clicking on the install icon, the installation starts but then there are 2 problems; the first is that the installer appears to want to install to both the SD card and also the USB stick. There is a tick in the box beside the USB stick which I can't remove.

I decided to ignore that and put a tick in the box beside the SD card but when it got to the point where it creates partitions it said "Could not find enough free space for automatic partitioning. Please use another partitioning method"

Surely 8 GB is more than enough space for partitioning, so where am I going wrong and why does it want to install on the USB stick as well?

Fedora Installation :: Kernel Update Fails Due To 10MB Boot Partition

Feb 23, 2010

Finally updates are broken - I've been able to use my upgraded F12 system for some time, faithfully keeping up with f10, then f11. Just yesterday it finally broke:

Test Transaction Errors: installing package kernel-2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.i686 needs 10MB on the /boot filesystem

It would appear that the most recent kernel update has broken the 10MB barrier initially set by the version I first installed (for the boot partition). Needless to say, I have quite an investment in this machine, and of course no time to back it all up and do a fresh F12 install. I am hoping someone out there can give me a bulletproof way to steal some space and expand the boot partition...

Ubuntu Installation :: Xp And - Netbook Dual Boot - Error - Windows Boot Failed

Jul 8, 2010

I have a netbook running Windows XP as standard. There is also a recovery partition which came from the factory.

In the past I installed Ubuntu (I think 9.something) from USB key and all worked fine. However my XP became corrupted and I needed to do a repair on it. After this, Ubuntu became removed from the boot select menu.

Since then, Ubuntu has become updated to 10.04, which I now cannot install.

The Live CD tells me there is a "file IO error" and simply stops installation at around 70%.

I did manage to get into Ubuntu from a Live USB using Wubi. However when I chose to install Ubuntu to a Harddrive, the option to "install side by side" was missing.

After reading on the forums, I did a chkdsk /f on Windows and tried again. Now my liveUSB does not show a boot menu!

When I select to boot from USB stick, the screen goes blank with a flashing cursor. Ctrl+alt+dlt reboots.

I'm really lost here! It seems when I fix one problem, another problem arises!

Also when trying to instal Ubuntu within Windows, the process goes through to 100% and asks me to reboot. When I do so, the option for Ubuntu does show in the boot menu. However when I select it, I get an error "Windows boot failed: file wubildr.mbr and status: 0xc00000f - something is corrupt".

Fedora Installation :: FC11 X64 Dell T5400 Dual Nvidia Quadro FX 1700 Fails To Graphically Boot

Sep 4, 2009

I'm running into this issue after installing Fedora Core 11 off DVD. Anaconda install the first part of the installation, then after reboot it goes into run level 3 (I think, where you have to login as root) I noticed that it said xserver failed to load before it actually boots Anaconda.

Maybe I should pull a graphic's card? I have logged in as root after the base install and did a lspci, and you can see the two Nvidia Quadro FX1700's and you can tell it is an intel board with the Intel Corp 6311ESB/6321ESB PCI Express ports. Also you can navigate through the linux directories via ls \. I tried YUM to find/install the graphics drivers but it says something about metadata not being configured. I checked the IP address with ifconfig and had to manually assign an ip.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot-up 10.10 Netbook

Dec 6, 2010

I was playing an online game and my netbook, previously running XP, somehow got a virus. The next morning when I turned on my netbook, the screen showed the normal Toshiba BIOS screen, and then went black, only showing a blinking white cursor in the top left corner of the screen.

Right now I'm on my netbook running on a thumb with 10.10 on it. When I try to install 10.10, after rebooting (and setting the BIOS settings back to the hard drive instead of the thumb), the screen goes black like before. If I boot from the thumb drive though and instead of installing, I select the "try ubuntu" option, I'm able to run my netbook as I am now. In the top left corner I have the "install ubuntu-netbook 10.10" option available.

I ran the boot info script and here's what I've got:

Code:

Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010
============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================
=> Syslinux is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda
=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb and looks on the same drive in

Ubuntu Installation :: Netbook 10.10 Doesn't Boot Up?

Dec 11, 2010

I just downloaded Ubuntu Netbook 10.10 and created a boot usb stick.

My netbook runs ok from the stick (i.e. "Live CD" mode) and all seemed OK, so I went for an installation.

The install process appeared to complete ok, but when I restart the machine without the usb stick nothing happens - after inputting my power-on password, nothing at all: no disk activity or anything, just blank screen.

The netbook is an Acer Aspire One, the solid-state disk version, no hard-disk (110Ab ZG5)

I previously had the EasyPeasy implementation of Ubuntu NBR 10.04 running without problem (and NBR Karmic before that)

How do I begin to trouble-shoot this?

Fedora :: Reading SDHC Camera Card - Most Of The Image Is A Grey Block

Sep 29, 2010

I have tried putting the SDHC card in before switching on laptop, after, unmounting and remounting several times... on the odd occasion (1/10?) it reads fine, but more often than not, i can see thumbnails of all the images but on opening the file it comes out wrong...either most of the image is a grey block - so can see a tiny bit of sky then its as if it hasn't rendered the whole image...or, the image is striped horizontally, with as if a film negative has been shredded and then misaligned with the colours going wrong...is there an update, something to install to fix this? ETA: - its not the card which works perfect on other laptops and its not the card reader it opens fine in windows 7 on the same computer.

Debian Installation :: 2.6.32-5-amd64 Boot Fails - How To Make It Boot

May 27, 2011

My old computer started randomly rebooting so I went out yesterday and bought a new one. It's a standard Intel 64 architecture with 2gb ram etc.The old computer was running Lenny however I'm happy to upgrade, so I just went to the main Debian download site and downloaded:debian-6.0.1a-ia64.netinst.iso (this didn't work, apparently ia64 is for itanium and my machine is definitely not that), so I downloaded: debian-6.0.1a-amd64-netinst.iso, burnt the CD and ran the install. First time through I had a power failure.

Second time through (a complete fresh start - new partition and everything) it went all the way through to completion and reboot.Clicked 'Continue' to reboot and the machine reset as it would normally and the Grub loader started okay, prompted for the "Debian amd64" standard boot image, selected that and the first 6 lines appeared normal, then the messages wizzed by so fast that only superman could read them. Then they stop - here is some of the content...

[3.816673] Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to killl init!
Call trace:
get_empty_filp
panic

[code].....

Running it again I get similar stack stuff but it's a different place: [3.541816], [3.427502] And sometimes if I wait for a minute or two it will continue on further but appear to crash again. Hardware details (everything is onboard - no added cards):

G41M-S3
Intel G41 + ICH7 chipsets
CPU: LGA 775 for Intel Core 2 Extreme

[code]......

Is the amd64 the wrong image? Should I try i386? Is it a blip and I should just rerun the entire install again?

I am not getting the option of installing them side by side, choose between them each startup! Which is what I want to do... I am only getting the option of erase and use entire drive, and specify partitions manually.
