Fedora Installation :: F11 - Graphical Install Fails - Text Install Has No Fdisk
Jun 28, 2009I have been using Redhat/Fedora for 11 years. I don't understand why Fedora 11, can't even do a vga graphical install, when Windows can.
I tried many parameters, including xdriver=vesa, and it cannot used graphical install.
So, I tried text install, which I have done many times in the past.
However, F11 seems crippled, in that it will NOT do the same install achievable from a graphical install.
It will NOT allow the use of fdisk, and it will NOT allow any selection of any packages.
What is the point of this option?
Even after trying all of this, for a dual boot install, and F11 claims to have installed, there is no grub or equivalent, and the computer just boots windows, just like Fedora 11 did absolutely nothing.
What are the options now? Why is text install so crippled and incomplete? Why is standard VGA mode so hard?

So I use text mode.I would like to have a very small installation with very few installed packages, so at package selection I uncheck everything. In text mode installation there is no option to customize installed packages down to package names. I can only check main themes.So I uncheck everything and installation starts. This method results over 400 packages to bo installed... This is too much with many unnecessary packages.If I use graphical interface and uncheck every package name at custom package selection then about 150 packages will be installed.Is there any good way to use textmode installation and don't install more than 400 packages?

Feb 1, 2009dose any one know the text string to enter to DISABLE ip v6 100% during the install?using the gui installer for fedora 5,6,7,8,9 i have been able to disable this ( uncheck a check box) then set the system up manually for ip4 .the reason is for some reason if ip6 is on during the install ( i have had this problem with all versions of fedora f5 through 9 and now 10)then fedora will never, never, NEVER ever connect to the net .the ip6 lookup kills my cable box, i boot into windows and it can not even connect until i unplug the box for 2 min and plug it back in and get a NEW/renewed ip address .so i do believe that i am going to need to do a text install and disable ip6. But the question is HOW ?

Jun 25, 2009I'm running a P4 system with Dual ATI Radeon 2900HD Graphics cards. When I try to install F11, the graphical interface fails to start and I end up in a text install. I've seen plenty of information on how to fix the problem post install, however I'm not nearly advanced enough to then continue the installation (the text install does not install much, particularly doesn't install the graphical interface). Is there a way to work around this (IE a more complete text install, or somehow getting it to install in graphical user interface?)

Apr 2, 2011I put a text file on my desktop and added a couple lines of text with gedit. File type shows text/plain. Double-click opens the file in gedit which is what I want. I'm using the file to temporarily hold some snips of code that I copy from file to file, but when I copy some html into the file and save it, now file properties show it's text/html and a double-click opens the file in firefox, which isn't what I want. Is there some way to keep the file type from changing itself?

2) Why isn't the output of the show-leaves plugin compatible with the output of "package-cleanup --leaves"?

Mar 4, 2009It seems I had no say in the matter. The installer automatically did text mode and it starts up in text mode now. I'm very new to Fedora, though I had Ubuntu installed recently but removed it because Fedora seemed a little more interesting to me. I'm on an HP Pavilion dv2807nr laptop if that helps.

Aug 27, 2009I tried installing Fedora 11 on my i386 using the 6 CD set that I downloaded. Since my system has only 128M of RAM, the text install mode was used. The 1st CD installation seemed to work OK. After 181 out of 181 packages were installed, the system rebooted and did not ask for me to insert the other CDs. now when my system comes up, it is always in text mode.
Q. Is there a command I can use to have the remaining CD's installed so I can install the graphics system?

I can load the Gnome with the command startx without problems, but how can I made that it loads the Gnome automatically?

Apr 20, 2009Trying to install FC10 on an older Dell GX150 machine, and I get to the point where the graphical install app loads, but I am not able to see any text on the screen, other than the back/next buttons, and when I click on next, I can see that it goes to a new screen where it looks like it's asking for some text input, but I can't decipher what it's asking for, and if I try to type in the box, nothing happens.
I think I read somewhere on here about using a different boot option to get FC10 to work in a Virtual PC, but not sure if it would apply here (and can't seem to find that thread anyway!) I am booting off the FC10 DVD, and can get to the menu to install/upgrade, rescue, boot locally, or test memory. If I hit TAB, I can edit the boot option - I just need to know what to put in there to get this to work!

Dec 27, 2009Since the kernel of F11 live-cd can't recognize my video card, I have to run it in text mode. I also have to run "liveinst" in text mode and the install progess seemed ok. But on the partitioning selection step, there is no "custom layout" option! I rembered that in the graphic mode there was such option. How can I find it in the text mode?

(Not a big deal).So I went and downloaded the F12 Live CD which did the same thing.., at some point just after install the screen would be black and reset is the only option.Got the full F12 32-bit DVD and during the installation I get: "X Startup Failed,Falling back to text mode."Finishing the install I get to a nice black log-in prompt so I can log-in as root.From there I cant do much as I am a n00d in Linux to some extent and my network doesn't work
My video card is a Geforce FX 5200 which installed and worked just fine under F11 (without me doing anything but basic install and Ubuntu 9.10)

Jan 14, 2009Im trying to install Fedora 10 on to my HP Pavilion a340a (full product specifications: [url] ), i boot from the cd and it says "Automatic boot in 10 seconds..." etc, i get past that screen and am then at a screen with 2 shades of blue and a white bar moving at the bottem of the screen towards the words "Fedora 10", on the next screen, the log on screen, all the text is jumbled up and distorted, and everything appears frozen, except that i can move the mouse. I am not sure what the problem is but i know its not the cd because after having problems with hp pc i decided to try it on my Acer Extensa 2300 laptop (1.5ghz, 1.2gb ram, 40gb hdd, 32mb intel integrated graphics) and that installed fine, without a problem. This has led me to beleive that Fedora may not be liking the intel graphics on my HP Pavilion, and i dont know why. i really want to use Fedora 10 on my desktop. I should mention that i want to dual boot Windows XP and Fedora 10 on Pavilion, windows is already installed.

2. edited the line to: "vmlinuz0 initrd=initrd0.img text"
3. Pressed enter and started to boot
4. A few seconds late a error message appears saying: "empty root argument"
5. also tryied various modification of "root=" option and of course GOOGLE but only the error message changed: "dont know how to handle root=@cdrom, root=@initrd0.img etc"

Feb 16, 2009just built a computer and wanted to try out some linux.
First off I burned the Fedora 10 x86_64 disk image (using disk utility on my mac at 4x speed then verified it) to a dvd. I start the install. "x startup fails to load, falling back to text mode" comes up. I use the text install then. It gets to the actual installation of the different packages then a black screen shows up with white text that's highlighted red (sometimes it's blue). It then freezes and I reboot. Sometimes it freezes at different points and with different messages, but the description above is what happens most often.
I try writing it at 1x speed and verifying. same thing.I try the Live CD. It freezes.Then I tried Fedora 9. same thing.
Next I go to Ubuntu 8.10.I try the regular install, but the orange loading bar freezes.I try the Live CD-like install. It runs!...but when i go to install, when it gets to the partitioning part, it freezes and becomes unresponsive.
Each time it froze I let it sit for about 10 minutes, just to make sure it is in fact frozen. I've tried these installs numerous times.
