My desktop has been running both windows and ubuntu for a couple of months via wubi. The plan is to eventually migrate fully to ubuntu though. Simple question, I hope, is it easy to effectively remove the windows side so that I don't have to make a new reinstall of ubuntu from scratch?

My startup currently shows me the options Windows 7 and Ubuntu.
Will I be able to have a partition on my computer to run Windows Vista and Ubuntu side-by-side?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been using Ubuntu Wubi for a few weeks now and am quite happy with it, and I am not missing Windows 7. This is not my first contact with Linux OS. In fact I have tinkled with Red Hat, SuSe and Fedora quite a few years back but never pursued them seriously as I found them difficult to use. Many people seem to be saying that "if you want to uninstall Ubuntu, just go to Windows Control Panel and uninstall Wubi like you would any other application and it will remove Wubi " But what if I wanted to uninstall Windows 7 and leave Ubuntu on the hard disk? Would I need to start from square one and re-install Ubuntu again?

I uninstalled via add/remove programs but the loader is still there. How do I get rid of that? It's not a big issue cause I just set Windows as the first boot whith a 3 second time so it loads right up. Just want to know how.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThe only options I get for loading Ubuntu 11.04 on my HP 2000-219DX Laptop is: 1. completely remove windows 7 and download Ubuntu, or 2. Manually partition the HD. I'm no computer wiz and am fairly new to GNU/Linux so I really don't know what the problem might be. I need the windows os for work but would prefer to run the Ubuntu distro for personal computing. I have the same problem with Ubuntu 10.10, so no Ubuntu for this laptop until I can get this problem solved.
View 9 Replies View RelatedJust to make this clear after I installed Ubuntu 10.10 I downloaded everything and updated everything but when I booted into my Windows side I was shocked that the boot time was so freaking fast but after logging in the start up programs took about 10 minutes and I was able to use my windows after total of 15 minutes I know this is a lot the reason as I think is the GRUB file is actually slowing my windows because it doesn't want to harm my hard drive this is just a guess.

have been trying to setup a dual boot system with ubuntu and XP running side by side on my Thinkpad T41.tried it a few times and always causes the same problem. i have 40 gig HDD, on which i create a 13 gig NTFS partition and leave the rest as free space. then install XP on the NTFS partition. no problems.
then i boot from the ubuntu disk (9.10 Karmic) and install using the "use free space" option at the partition section. ubuntu installs ok, and boots fine from GRUB 2.0. BUT when i select the XP option from GRUB's list, it starts to boot XP, i get the standard XP loading screen for three seconds and then it crashes to a blue screen critical problem, and restarts the system. when i then boot from the xp cd and go into recovery mode CHKDSK will not recognise the disk, and DISKPART shows one HDD at 35 gig which it cannot access.
this means i cant run FIXBOOT and get my xp install running again. every time i do this process it produces the same problem. tried at first with xp installed on whole HDD, and reducing the xp partition size. killed XP. then tried ubuntu first and xp second - but this caused the same inaccessible disk problem - xp would not recognise the partitions and would not install. so i slipstreamed my XP install disk to SP2 hoping this would make it recognise the partitions, but no luck there. so had to format all and repartition the 13 gig NTFS for xp. installed xp again without difficulty but ubuntu install killed my xp in the same way.
I'm wondering how much of my currently installed packages I can transfer to a new system...I have a HDD split in two. I have 10.4 on one half (/dev/sda6) - my working system for the last year or so since my last upgrade - and I have just installed 11.04 on the other half (/dev/sda. I wanted to check out the new version rather than upgrading. note I have my home folder and all stored data on other drives (zfs mirrored disks) - the boot disk is mostly OS related... I can overwrite /dev/sda8 with impunity as long as /dev/sda6 is intact....
What I want to do is capture the wide variety of packages I have installed on the old version and install them onto the new system - without using the dist-upgrade mechanism... I've had it fail too many times leaving me with a complete rebuild being required... is this (partially) possible or have too many core packages changed? I was especially thinking of something like [URL]

to reinstall:

another path would be to clone the entire /dev/sda6 onto /dev/sda8, boot into the duplicate and dist-upgrade that

When I try to install wubi I get an error box immediately after clicking on the exe file that says pyrun.exe at the top of the box and the text says no disk in drive insert disk into drive deviceharddisk2dr2 I have to use the task manager to close that window in order to do anything else. I can't get past this error. I would love to use wubi to put ubuntu on my system.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm an experienced Ubuntu user and thus far avoided the need to ask too many questions, but this one's a bit of an odd one.. I want to run 10.04 on my XP pro SP2 box at work so I thought perhaps I could run it via Windows by using Wubi - usually I dual-boot or run independently. However due to several factors this isn't possible in this instance, so rather than intall VMWare and all that palava, I figured Wubi would do the trick. Not used it before tho
The installer starts ok, but once it starts to download the install files it interferes with my network connection to the point where all my connections suddenly drop, and the install fails. I don't know wtf it's actually doing at this stage, because my SSH sessions to other machines seem to persist but I can no longer browse the web, IM loses connection (both MSN and Skype) - which could indicate it's interfering with my DNS? Even after closing the installer I just can't do anything without having to reboot the machine.
I just grabbed the latest installer from the site and ran the install. I'm pretty sure I didn't do anything wrong - but for some reason this clearly does not work on this machine. Am I missing something before I give up and try another tactic? It's turning into an awful lot of effort just to use one piggin' app...
I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 using Wibu inside Windows and installation looks good without any problems but when I select Ubuntu in Boot POST menu after I see Ubuntu Desktop I see error it's saying that Root directory is not specified and there is OK button and if I press it I see same message. only way to get out is to click restart in top right corner. My Windows installation is on RAID0 SSDs and I actually tried to install it on same partition as windows and even tried to install on NEW unallocated and freshly formatted partition. Nothing works. I am thinking to install it from Live CD however in advance formatting on let's say 20gb of space what do i assign ? Like how do I partition it like root directory and swap and other partition i ll need. Like can you specify all I think 3 different partitions I'll need and how much space to allocate for each on let's say 20GB of space.
I remember I had a choice "Use all free space" and it was soo simple I could have windows and some unallocated space on hard drive and Ubuntu would of use it . Now I don't see this option. I see use entire disk ...or advanced where You have to create on unallocated space all parts of partitions needed that's

I just got a new pc without os on it... I wanted to install Ubuntu, but for some reason Ubuntu live cd wouldn't boot. So, i installed Windows 7 and then i installed ubuntu with wubi... My question is: Will i be able to use Ubuntu after Windows 7 30 day trial expires? When windows 7 trial expires will it only lock windows 7 or will it destroy boot file (I read that somewhere on the internet)?

Anyhow, I am running Kubuntu 9.04 and wish to switch to Ubuntu Karmic 9.10. I do still want to keep Kubuntu 9.04 as a boot up option temporarily in case I have major issues with Ubuntu. Ill also need to know how to get rid of Kubuntu after Im sure all is well with Ubuntu. Finally, there are a ton of boot options (different kernels Ive upgraded to) in Grub when Kubuntu boots up. First time Ubuntu user and looking to be a long one, too.Anyways, I used the "install side-by-side" on both machines, but my laptop, with Vista, has a weird side effect. At the boot screen, I chose Windows Vista and it booted the recovery tool (I forgot the exact name). I was worried at first, but when I chose the actual Windows Recovery option below it to attempt to fix it, it booted Vista. So it seems in the process of partitioning the HDD for Ubuntu I somehow switched what each partition boots. Is there a way to correct this?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI got the BSOD on Windows 7 and I was unable to fix it at all. But I had already installed Ubuntu on my computer a while ago with a wubi installation. I look and saw other form posts/ tutorials online and ever time I follow them the error I end up getting is hard drive already mounted. Is this because I am already on that hard drive by running Ubuntu or is it because of a bsod error. Also what will happen if I force unmount my hard drive? Basically I want my files from the windows portion so I can move them then too a portable hard drive and factory reset my whole computer.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently did a Wubi install of 9.10 on my netbook that initially ran Windows 7 Starter. I wanted to speed up the booting process so I went into Windows and set the OS selection list waiting time to be 0 and the default OS to be ubuntu. I did this assuming that there is a way to force OS selection list to be brought up during boot; I think I was wrong.So now, I'm stuck booting directly into 9.10 (not even a full install!). Is there a way to either modify the Windows boot file to reset the selection list timer or to force the list to be brought back out?
EDIT: I should note that editing the grub files within the wubi install would only make changes to the GRUB loader, which has no effect on the actual Windows loader.
I had Ubuntu installed in Windows XP (with Wubi). One day my motherboard, let's just say stopped working. So, I had to replace my motherboard..., well I bought a new PC, but with the Hard Drive of the old one. When I first started it i got the same boot screen letting me choose between Ubuntu and Windows XP. Well, you can pretty much figure out that none of them worked. So, I installed Windows 7 (as the new configuration is pretty powerful). So, from the boot menu Windows XP was replaced by Windows 7 but still Ubuntu stays there and I can't figure out how to delete it.
