Ubuntu Installation :: "Download Package Files Only" For Upgrade?

May 12, 2010

I want to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04, and Update Manager is telling me that it will take several hours to download 1.5GB of updated packages on my relatively slow connection. Because of the use of the machine, I don't really want to leave it downloading and updating for several hours.

Is there a way that I can download the required packages to a cache, maybe over several sessions, and then separately kick off the installation process once everything is available?

Synaptic has a tickbox to "Download package files only" which does a similar thing to my request for normal package upgrades, but I don't see a tickbox like that in Update Manager when doing a major version upgrade.

Ubuntu Installation :: Failed To Download Package Files

I just recently installed Ubuntu on my laptop and was attempting to install Wine on it this morning. I went through the proper procedure listed on the site, but once I get back to the Software Center and hit "install" it gives me an error a second later saying "Failed to Download Package Files. Check your Internet connection."

Fedora Installation :: Full Install F11 From Upgrade Files Download

Jul 29, 2009

I was happily running F10 and against my better judgement when it offered to upgrade me to F11 I decided to give it a try. The F11 install hung at 893 of 1626 packages installed. Some SE Linux package was in process of install. On the next boot the installer fails to upgrade for a corrupted root. It says I can backtrack and do a full install, but crashes with a bug when I choose backtrack.

So here is my question - Can i edit the command line and tell the installer to full install rather than upgrade? Or am I stuck with downloading a DVD ISO and doing a full install that way. I've done F8, F9 and F10 so full install from DVD doesn't bother me.

OpenSUSE :: Download Package Dependencies For Offline Installation?

Oct 25, 2009

is there a way to get urls of the packages that have been updated and then download them in another computer? like this feature of ubuntu HOWTO: Download package dependencies for offline installation - Ubuntu Forums

its a simple feature and its present in smart and synaptic, yet its not in yast (or i havent found it yet.

i would use smart package manager but in my home connection for checking for updates ,yast is better ( smart downloads filelist.xml.gz that is very way biger than what yast downloads (though it enables smart to show filelist of package BEFORE installing) .so at home i can check for package update with yast ,buy downloading them is very hard. (my connectioon is very bad (i live in iran) and yast mirrors are NOT the best of servers ,so yast gets interrupted in middle downloading a rpm and the whole process is waiting for me to press retry ,so i cant do updates and installs overnight.btw is there some way to tell it to retry always or a number of times automatically? )

i need the url links of rpms so i download them separately and install them.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.4 Upgrade Download Crash Can't Boot 9.10

May 1, 2010

Was running the upgrade through the manager this morning and the download got about 3/4 of the way and froze up making the system unresponsive I left this for an hour to see if it would resolve its self but no luck so as the installation hadn't begun I hit the power button. BIG mistake now when I try boot to 9.10 it hits a black screen with white ubuntu logo much like 9.10 but no loading bar. it just hangs at this now. I am currently posting this from a live usb I made from an ISO of 10.4 i downloaded on my girl friends windows machine. Is it possible to either fix the 9.10 installation or update the files on the 9.10 installation to 10.4 from the live disk(I have the option to make a 9.10 live disk if needed)?

Ubuntu Installation :: Synaptic Package Upgrade ?

Feb 23, 2010

I am trying to get Ubuntu up and running on my Dell XPS 400 desktop. I verified the checksum of the iso (ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso) I downloaded, and I ran the cd check before installing. I also ran a memtest for 16 hours with no errors.

So I install Ubuntu, and everything seems ok. Now, I try to update my software packages, and the upgrade always fails after all the packages are downloaded (sometime during actual installation). So, I have to reboot, and the file system will not mount. I run fsck and reboot, and now I cannot even boot normally or to a shell... This has happened to me twice in row.

What is the best plan of attack when a package fails to install midway? I want to use Ubuntu, but this is making it pretty hard.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade 9.10 To 10.04 - Package Command Is Broken?

May 30, 2010

I've only been using Linux for a few days (Specifically - I installed Ubuntu 9.10 last week on my laptop for learning the OS and updated to 10.04 over the weekend). I have searched Google (and found answers) for every problem now except for this new one. I apologise in advance for the length but I wanted to include my own troubleshooting as well.

When I installed and setup Ubuntu Karmic - I added my work software. Autopackage wasn't installed by default so I used terminal's package install <filename> command for the first file - and double clicked on the rest to install. With the OS change I wanted to check to see if these packages would have problems installing on 10.04 (mostly to double check).First I checked my Manage 3rd Party Software to remove them - but all my entries here are blank. (I should have quite a few actually - I've done a lot of installing and downloading in the last few days).I double clicked to re-run them but that failed saying there was a problem with the packages. So I swapped to Terminal and found the following:

When I try to install a software package:

sudo package install "SMART Product Drivers 10.package"
Reply: package: can't open config file /home/test/.mailagent
If I type in just

[code].....

What's interesting, is checking my Fedora and Debian builds (I've done a lot of learning for only a few days! But I know a ton about grub 1 and 2 now) - I can't see a /home/test/.mailagent file or folder to copy either. The only thing I can think of is I have never setup an email account on my system (I've only been using it for a few days) and maybe the blank Manage 3rd Party Software tab is indicating a different problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Controlling Upgrade Package Selection?

Sep 19, 2010

I'm looking into upgrading my laptop from 9.10 to 10.04, but before I do I wanted to find out if I can limit the number of packages the system must install for this purpose. I began the process to upgrade, and the wizard informed me that on top of package upgrades, 288 packages needed to be downloaded, for a total well over 1GB of downloading. While my internet connection can support this, I don't feel the need to install 288 packages, most of which I'm certain I will not be using, nor will most of these be dependencies for things I do use.

In short: can I pick and choose what gets downloaded and installed in the upgrade? I've asked this question before, and somebody said the answer was 'yes', however I see nowhere to control this. No buttons, no config files.

Ubuntu Installation :: Excluding A Package When Dist-upgrade'ing?

Feb 6, 2011

Is there a way of excluding a software package when issuing the 'apt-get dist-upgrade'command? For example the newer 'pm-utils' packs are incompatible with my hardware and my laptop starts to glitch. What I do is I uninstall and replace the package every time I run 'sudo apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade'. Which is kind of annoying. I know that you can hide updates from the update manager, but what about the terminal? I'm sure there are codes like "dist-upgrade [except pm-utils]"

Fedora :: Download And Install A Package (zip Package)

Wich tool and how can i do it? c Well, i am in position to say that i had downloaded from Internet or located the package in the Cd or DVD that comes with the magazine.

But now comes the big question. How can i put this package ( install) on my distro ???

Do i have to be a normal user or should it be root or su (superuser) ?

The packages that come with the distro is easy, because i select them and everything is done

As i told before, maybe this is a silly question, but i simple don't know how to install them and i need some of them to leave MS for good.

Ubuntu Installation :: Computer Freezes When Hit 'upgrade' On Package Manager

I seem to have a small problem. Since september, i hooked up an old Acer laptop (with just 560 RAM and a 16 mib graphical card) to a computer screen, a keyboard and a mouse, so that i had an extra 'computer' for my mother to use. Old people prefer bigger screens to ponder upon.

But anyways, each time i want to update or upgrade the 9.04 Ubuntu distribution, it freezes. This is quite annoying since i really want it to upgrade to 9.10, for possible faster results.
