View 10 Replies View RelatedI've been an ubuntu user for several years and just installed kubuntu 11.4 this morning. Nice desktop and feel. Easily navigable. I like. But i can't download any packages!
When i try "check for new updates" in KPackageKit i get:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
Over the years i've used [url] to update my system but i get no joy this time.
I'm using kubuntu 11.4 on a fujitsu-siemens amillo pi2530. I've enable the natty universe and multiverse repositries.
I finished installing Debian 6.0 GNU/Linux at 4:00 this morning. I have a friend who is quite good with Debian Linux (he's been using it for years), but he was unable to help me. Over four hours of searching-around on the internet, typing gibberish into the terminal, etc. has done nothing but frustrate me. Even more frustrating: it worked at 5:00 this morning, before I went to sleep. Does anyone have any advice for me on how to fix this crippling issue? My NIC is integrated, having come with the computer, and is the RealTek Family Fast Ethernet
View 12 Replies View RelatedWe've had a headless server running Ubuntu for a few weeks now and it's been fantastic - we've been able to access it from all of our computers and it's making life so much easier having one central box to put everything in. Until yesterday, where we noticed that some directories on the 1TB HDD were empty that were previously full of files. Restarted and the directories are gone, leaving only the root directories. Restarted again and Ubuntu doesn't even recognise the disk.
We have Ubuntu installed on a 250GB HDD with the 1TB hard drive mounted on (as?) /srv and all of the data is on there. Before Ubuntu stopped recognising the disk it would appear in Disk Utility saying that the file system was corrupted and that there was an issue with the superblock - I've found some ways of attempting to fix that but none are working now that Ubuntu isn't able to find the disk. I've checked the physical connections and they all appear to be working fine. I can hear/feel the hard disk spinning. Some users haven't backed up the files they put on the server so I'd prefer to try anything non-destructive first and save their work. I'm hoping that the HDD hasn't totally died... but now that Ubuntu can't see it I'm concerned that that might be the case.
I want to share my /home/myname/Public/ directory with other users on my system. The problem I am having is that it seems impossible to do so. I can't use a hard link because it's a directory and I can't use a soft link because the target directory can't be found by anyone unable to read my home directory.
So far, the only solutions I can see are:
1) To move everything from my Public directory to one lower on the directory tree (something like /home/Public) and then symlink to that as /home/myname/Public and allow everyone else to do the same.
2) To use something like samba to share the folder, even if only locally.
is doable because /home and /home/myname are on the same volume but there are times on my system when that is not true (I have users with their home directories on thumbdrives and external HDDs for instance and keeping their public files on a separate volume really isn't an option).
I am not new to linux, but brand new to wireless. I partined in Win 7, loaded Ubuntu 10.4 and seemingly on boot I am connected wireless as I am in Win 7. However the moment I open Firefox I am no longer on line. Its not important to discussion, but I am not a avid windows fan and at 80 Linux is my hobby having experienced 8-10 distros. So I hope someone out there has the patience to advise me. Thank you so much for reading my tale of woe

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble getting sound working under a brand new install of OpenSUSE 11.3. I am new to both SUSE and anything that's not Debian based, so please understand if I'm not able to comprehend a lot of what you say quickly. After a successful install, I attempted to play an MP3 file. This did not work in Amarok, and installation of it would also not work. So I went to this site, openSUSE 11.3 | SUSE Linux | Beginner's guide to multimedia codecs MP3 DVD 3D nvidia ati wireless and installed the multimedia codecs and all that. While I was there I also installed the ATI driver for my ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 onboard chip. After booting back up, x would not start, so I fixed that with a command. After finally getting into X, sound wouldn't work, and I con not figure out why. I know if it installed something the affects my audio.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed fedora and enjoying learning what it can do. One of the things that I wanted to do was play DVDs. I installed vlc and the libvdreader package but am unable to play DVDs. I even used "movie player", and the program said, fedora does not have the right codecs to play the DVD. Does anybody know what I need to do? And what codecs that I need to download if any?

Fedora is a distro that is focused only on free and open source software. This means that Fedora doesn't distribute any proprietary or patent encumbred software, so they'll not be present in the official Fedora releases and repositories. This does not mean that they cannot be instaled in a Fedora distro. Because there are many users who want to run some of that software, the community has been providing, since a long time ago, alternative ways to acomplish that. This is very important when a new release is distributed, because it attracts many first time users and not all of them are aware of the above mentioned, and every six months, the same questions are placed in the forums, regarding that.
To help new users to install the non free and proprietary stuff mentioned in the titlle, I decided to leave here a fast summary, chosed among many of the available options.

Each time I connect to a Mumble server, this appears:Quote: Unable to find matching CELT codecs with other clients. You will not be able to talk to all users. Apparently that is the cause for not being able to hold a conversation on mumble. Nobody can hear me, though I can't specify if I can hear others at the moment. Some googling has led me to this:
Gentoo Bug #293300
media-sound/mumble-1.2.0_beta1 tries to load media-libs/celt-0.7.0 as
"libcelt.so.0.7.0", but the actually installed library is named
"libcelt.so.0.0.0". Thus CELT support in Mumble is supposedly missing, but can
be restored by symlinking libcelt.so.0.7.0 to libcelt.so.0.0.0.

I just installed F15 new, and I wonder what packages do I need to install to play movies with restricted codecs? I thought I have everything what I installed last time with F14 but I can't play my movies in Kaffeine. I have rmpfusion and the packages gstreamer-plugins-bad-free gstreamer-ffmpeg gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-ugly, and all other gstreamer-* packages.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've tried to use the GUI tool for update system in Fedora 10. It listed all of the available updates successfully, but it have not any response when i click the 'Update System' button~
View 2 Replies View RelatedFedora (2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64) I installed that update, during the installation process it said that it had to remove three packages, one of them was kmod nvidia for the old kernel (Fedora (2.6.33.8-149.fc13.x86_64))After the update finished installing the new kernel, I restarted the system and Nvidia did not load. (I assume because Update manager removed the old nvidia? But I also assumed that a new version would be installed automatically?)I received the following Boot messages:
Code:
Entering non-interactive startup
Starting monitoring for VG vg_user1: 3 logical volume(s) in volume group "vg_user1" monitored
[code]....
I'm confused, if Update Manager removed kmod nvidia, then why does yum say it is installed? And why doesn't the new kernel update work with that version? Or should I install a driver version for that particular kernel? I've read while searching that I need to install a kmod-nvidia for that particual kernel version and that I should login to my previous kernel until that happens, is that the problem I'm having?
Why don't rpmfusion and fedoraproject release the kmod-nvidia and kernel updates at the same time to avoid problems such as this? Does anyone know how long does it usually take for rpmfusion to release the new kmod-nvidia driver for the latest kernel?
How do I update from FC10 to Fedora 12 from the command line.

I'd like to confirm if the latest updates of a couple of rpms is causing me a problem. I'd like to downgrade these rpms to an intermediate version (greater than the original F11 versions, but less than the latest version). I've looked on a few mirrors, and all I can find is the latest update. Are intermediate versions of an rpm discarded when they're replaced with new versions? Are these intermediate versions available some place?
The two rpms I'm interested in are:

gstreamer-plugins-base-0.10.25-1.fc11.i586
