Fedora Installation :: Trouble Installing Via Live CD

Sep 12, 2009

I boot it up using the live cd then try to install it to my hard drive. I want to dual boot Vista and Fedora, so I've created another partition. However I'm having trouble whilst installing. When I get to the stage to select where I want to install it I choose the "Custom" choice. It is then also obvious what partition to choose as one is much smaller. But no matter what options I pick for it, it brings up an error. >_<

I know this is probably a terrible and confusing explanation, but I'm a huge newb to linux and especially fedora. If you want a better explanation please ask and I will try to deliver.

Fedora :: Trouble In Installing Software

Nov 25, 2009

I'm having a tough time trying to wrap my head around the command line and any help would be greatly appreciated. I've downloaded and am trying to install mpg123. I'll tell you what I THINK I'm supposed to do and if someone could correct me where I'm going wrong I would appreciate it.The program is in my downloads folder. it looks unpacked to me because I can see all the separate files but I will assume that I'm wrong. so to unpack it:$ tar -jxvf mpg123-1.9.2.tar.bz

or do i need to unpack it to a certain place like: $ tar -jxvf mpg123-1.9.2.tar.bz ~/username/downloads/if thats the case I tried and it says no file or directory exists. IF I do get it unpacked the install instructions tell me:

1. New installation via GNU autotools

I dont understand because I can see it in the exact file path that it tells me doesnt exist. All I'm trying to do to install some software and its very frustrating because I dont know these simple commands that are the backbone of linux, which I really want to use. I realize that there are a ton of howto's out there but I havent found one that is easy enough to understand for someone who's never typed a command in his life or that isnt so broad and all encompassing that it blows my mind just look at the screen. Please help

Fedora :: Trouble Installing Flash

Jan 15, 2010

Everytime I try to install Adobe Flash, I have problems. I go the RPM route or the YUM route and still have problems. I've even tried yum a 2nd time and it says its already installed, but if I go to a website that requires Flash, it says pluggin missing. On the other hand, if I go and install JAVA it somehow installs the pluggins and everything works from there on. Can someone tell me what I'm missing on the original install ?

Fedora Installation :: If Installing From The Live CD - Must Have At Least Two Partitions Available ?

Jun 10, 2009

Due to a combination of factors, if installing from the Live CD, you must have at least two partitions available. One will be a small (around 200 MB) /boot partition. The / (root filesystem) partition must be formatted as ext4 while the /boot partition must be formatted as ext2 or ext3.

The normal installation CD set and DVDs don't have this issue.

If you choose to install the Live CD and don't follow this scheme (you can, of course, have additional partitions besides /boot and /), the LiveCD won't install.

Fedora Installation :: Options For Installing 14 From Live CD?

Feb 17, 2011

Been a while since I've been on here, but I was using Fedora 12 for the longest time and only recently started having problems. I kept getting errors and pop-up dialogs telling me to run yum-complete-transaction, which I tried as root many times. It would then give an error that it couldn't locate the repository and such. So, I looked through all my yum config files and changed a few things until I FINALLY got the command to do something, only it did all kinds of strange things as I was running low on EXT3 disk space and using old Windows' partition to store a lot of things on.

Now, I backed up all the /home directories and files as well as /root, just in case this didn't go smoothly and I still ran out of disk space. If I had the money, I'd buy a storage stick and just back up everything, but that's not an option at the moment. Now I have a crippled version of XP (pretty much useless from a trojan, even though I had McAfee AND Windows Defender running), and half of Fedora 12 with 2 different boot images! When I first did this, I used a 10G partition to install Fedora, which was plenty then. What's left of Win still resides on about 65G of space, but I have a lot of files there I want to keep. Fisrst thing I want to know is, should I look anywhere else on the Fedora disk to find files I may need, just in general? There's still a LITTLE space on the drive to back up stuff if I need to.

Second, while I still had enough to work with, I managed to download and burn a F14 Live CD, which is running now. I saw the option on the desktop to install it, and can get my config files and such from the backups if need be. I do NOT have a DVD burner, so if I have to I can use regular 700MB CDs, but only if they are available. The next thing I need to know is if I can install F14 from the web, without having to download any more ISOs, (again, assuming they are available). I know all my DSL settings so that's not a problem, I just need to find out if I can install it that way before I go clicking that icon. Anyone with experience with this would be helpful. I'm ready (MORE than ready) to go through with it, I just don't want to get "stuck" once I start the process. My download rate is around 200k/sec, so it's going to take some time no matter which way I (can) go.

Fedora Installation :: Installing - Live Cd Goes To Dark Screen

Feb 24, 2009

I'm kind of new to linux, but even I shouldn't have this much trouble, because I've been reading faqs like crazy and tutorials, but I just don't understand what's going on. I'm installing Linux Mint on my old machine now and it's installing good, but I try to install Fedora 10 and I've been having problems. It works fine in VMware, but when I try to load it from a live CD to install into the drive, on the initizialize process it say's "failed ata something something", then it goes to a bar and then it goes to a black screen and it hangs there. I did 5 md5check sums on the same iso, I'm not sure what's going on?

OpenSUSE Install :: Trouble Installing On New Laptop

Apr 19, 2011

got a new laptop (well, it's 2nd hand) but it's a laptop which is the model up from mine i use suse on already. i have a HP compaq 6720s, and the new one is a HPS 6735s. i've downloaded and burned the 11.4 iso as an image but it just won't load. thought it was maybe corrupt but it works on my laptop which is already running suse. checked in the BIOS and it doesn't seem to mention boot from dvd drive, though it does say cd drive (but it's definitely a dvd drive).

is it possible to install from a usb pen drive? if so, how? fat32 won't take it, as it's too big a file, and will just putting the .iso file on there mean it'll work? what file system should i use? ntfs, ext3/4?

Software :: Having Trouble Installing ATI Proprietary Driver

Nov 20, 2010

I'm having a teensy problem with installing something. About time, too, everything was going so smoothly. Anyway, I'm trying to install the ATI Proprietary Linux Drivers so this new video card (well, I say "new" though it's actually a rather old card, a Radeon x300, but still better than my embedded gpu) that I have will be stable whenever I play some games, and I get one particular problem I'm having trouble getting around..

I really don't know how to fix this. Completely clueless, in fact, except for maybe reinstalling XFree86 or changing the PATH env variable to something else, but I don't know what to change it to. Hm...

General :: Grub Freeze And Trouble Installing / Resolve This?

Feb 23, 2011

I just bought a Intel D525MW ITX board, a PicoPSU and a stick of 2GB ram.
I burned the new stable debian netinst to a disk and booted it up from a usb cdburner. At this point I had a usb keyboard and a usb kingston pen drive (temporary / ) connected. The computer would freeze whenever I chose a menu item. I rebooted a couple of times, same thing. I disconnected the usb pen and were finally able to start a graphical install. I quickly reconnected the pen and the install went fine as far as I could see.
Now. When I boot from the pen it just freezes showing "GRUB lading. Welcome to GRUB!" and a blinking underscore.

I were able to boot the usb pen on my Alienware laptop just fine - although it wanted a reboot after it ran a fsck.

Debian Installation :: Installing Live USB - What ISO Files To Download

Jan 8, 2015

I have a USB which I want to use for a 'live' debian OS. I have debian 7.7 on hard disk and will be using Unetbootin to transfer the .iso file onto the USB.

However, when I go the debian archive there are so many iso files for the particular debian pkg [URL] .... There's iso, iso.contents, iso.log, iso.packages and iso.zsync. Do I download all of these iso files?

I'll be doing a Code: Select allsha256sums <iso-filename> to make sure the downloads aren't corrupted. But when I use Unetbootin and get it to write the main .iso file onto USB, do I then repeat this process with all the other iso files for the OS?

CentOS 5 :: 5.3 On Pre-unibody Macbook Pro Installation Trouble

Sep 11, 2009

Big fan of the CentOS and have been using it on my renderfarms and workstations for a long time so naturally it's my linux of choice now that I've finally decided to dual boot my macbook pro. My macbook is the last model before they went with the unibody design so I think it's the 4.1 version (or some such designation). I can run Kubuntu and Fedora's live CDs, and I can get to the Suse installer as well. The problem with CentOS is a mystery to me because its hanging before getting to the installer. The last thing it reports is that it's running the loader and then it sits. I get the same results if I choose the text installer and the only difference the noapic option produces is an extra message that it's "Disabling IRQ #11".

Fedora :: Bootup Failure Trouble

May 15, 2011

I am facing bootup issue in Fedora 14.I troubleshoot the bootup issue i m facing probably because I have done change the name of volumes from disk utiltiy. I read somewhere that it should be done from another place (administration option, the last menu of fedora and there is some volume/disk management..like thing that give rod like blue/red picture of disk=>System-config-lvm) rather then disk utility under system tools. I think that my LVM path is not setup..due to rename of volume..it is mismatched somewhere...that includes path...finally using rescue disk i enter in shell prompt and mounted my system using chroot /mnt/sysimage
then found that my /home is empty, so done some readings and found that using mount /dev/vg_brs/home /home
i am able to get my home fixed that now appeared my user and whole data.

but that is till i m in shell prompt. Don't know where and how to fix/add this line so that boot loader of fedora will take this instead of something other that it is taking and not founding resulting in failure to boot with message (in between lines)

Debian Installation :: Xorg Trouble In Sqeeze / Screen Goes Black

Dec 31, 2010

I'm trying to install Xorg manually in Squeeze on my IBM X30 Thinkpad with intel graphics (it works in Lenny). I used aptitude and installed "xorg" and "fluxbox", but when I restart my computer I get a blank screen, instead of the console login request that I was expecting. (Note: I did not install any login managers). So exactly what happens is that the screen goes black (just backlight on)during boot process. Once I'm at the black screen doing CTRL+ALT+Backspac, Ctrl+Alt+Del or Ctrl+Alt+F[1-7] will not result in anything.

I tried booting with the single user mode, but same result, so the only way I could acess my log-files was by using a systemrescue-CD. What I find odd about this is that I cant find any configuration files at all. No xorg.conf anywhere in /etc, /etc/X11, nor in /home. I don't even have a /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d folder.Am I expected to write these by myself? And if Xorg is the source of my troubles, why is it starting by itself, without any installed login managers? Xorg not working is one thing, but not even being able to access the console, or log in to my computer makes it rather difficult to search for errors.
