Ubuntu :: Slim Login Manager Preventing Computer From Booting To Login Screen
Aug 4, 2011yesterday i installed slim login manager on my computer (eee pc 1018p, ubuntu 11.04), and now it cannot get passed the ubuntu loading screen (with orange dots underneath) when booting. i tried booting into recovery mode and that didn't work either. i also left the computer trying to boot overnight and that didn't work.
basically, during this loading screen that should eventually bring you to the login screen, i can alt+tab to see the progress of the load. the progress is stuck on
Is there anything I can do from grub to remove slim?or, is there any way I can access my ubuntu partition and save all my files?
Debian Installation :: Xorg Trouble In Sqeeze / Screen Goes Black
Dec 31, 2010I'm trying to install Xorg manually in Squeeze on my IBM X30 Thinkpad with intel graphics (it works in Lenny). I used aptitude and installed "xorg" and "fluxbox", but when I restart my computer I get a blank screen, instead of the console login request that I was expecting. (Note: I did not install any login managers). So exactly what happens is that the screen goes black (just backlight on)during boot process. Once I'm at the black screen doing CTRL+ALT+Backspac, Ctrl+Alt+Del or Ctrl+Alt+F[1-7] will not result in anything.
I tried booting with the single user mode, but same result, so the only way I could acess my log-files was by using a systemrescue-CD. What I find odd about this is that I cant find any configuration files at all. No xorg.conf anywhere in /etc, /etc/X11, nor in /home. I don't even have a /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d folder.Am I expected to write these by myself? And if Xorg is the source of my troubles, why is it starting by itself, without any installed login managers? Xorg not working is one thing, but not even being able to access the console, or log in to my computer makes it rather difficult to search for errors.

May 27, 2011downloaded Fedora 15 Live CD and made a booting live CD with it , everything went Okbut after the first screen " automaticlly boot after 10 s " everything just went creepy and the contrast of my screen has become very very low , I was able to see that unity booted but I barely could see the icons without being able to see anything esle , just dark*darkthe same happened with the usb live version .Im having a " Mageia RC " installed in dual-boot with windows 7 and I have the same problem with it . which means, the distro is there but cannot be used cuz the contrast is very very low

Jul 10, 2010I been trying all day to boot debian on a lvm partition on a raid1. I have found some howtos but they only show how to do it for one or the other not both at the same time. Using those howtos I think I have grub2 setup right the problem is my kernel. It has support for both LVM and Raid built-in. I setup the raid and lvm partitions while running that kernel. But when I use it to boot up the system on the lvm/raid it gives a kernel panic.
The OS is by itself on an old disk sda1. The raid1 is on two other disks sdb1 & sdc1. It is divided into 2 logical partition vg-root & vg-media. I just copied the OS onto vg-root. Then tolled grub to boot to it. The grub entry is like so..I tried setting root=(md0) but that didn't work either. I'm pretty sure the problem is with the kernel but I don't see why since it can it can see the raid and lvm partitions once it is booted up and both the raid & lvm options are built into the kernel so it should be able to see them at boot time.

Sep 10, 2009Tried to install Fedora 11 from CD Live, CD, DVD, USB. In all cases installation (actaully, the boot) hangs up with the screen suddenly frozen and getting into weird greenish-bluish-whitish colors (see screenshots attached). The laptop is Cameron Maxmedia with AMD PCS.

Mar 11, 2010I am not sure what is wrong I am dual booting with windows 7 I have partitioned correctly when I boot from the CD The first screen comes up where it says automatically boots in 10 seconds. when it finishes counting down it pauses and then goes straight to a black screen I also tried to load Ubuntu and the same thing happened. Feb 24, 2011I've now tried several times to install a fresh copy Fedora 13 i386 on my old Dell laptop, but each time I reboot the laptop I get the first-time welcome screen which asks you to create a user. When I re-enter my user info, it tells me that there's already a folder created for that user. After rebooting, I'm back to that screen. Does anyone know what's going on here?

Sep 12, 2009I boot it up using the live cd then try to install it to my hard drive. I want to dual boot Vista and Fedora, so I've created another partition.However I'm having trouble whilst installing. When I get to the stage to select where I want to install it I choose the "Custom" choice. It is then also obvious what partition to choose as one is much smaller. But no matter what options I pick for it, it brings up an error. >_<
I know this is probably a terrible and confusing explanation, but I'm a huge newb to linux and especially fedora.If you want a better explanation please ask and I will try to deliver.

Jun 2, 2011I made a live-usb with Fedora 15. During installation the progress bar goes almost until its end and then it hangs up. I don't even get a login screen. The only responsible key is Esc which shows a console with two errors from nouvaeu, but i already figured it out that they are harmlessI tried gnome live-iso and kde live-iso - the result is the same. I installed Fedora 14 in the past on the same computer and no problems there.Ant ideas what i can do or check? I really want fresh install of Fedora 15 and Gnome 3

Mar 23, 2009Previously I have a hard disk running OpenSUSE partitioned as follows:

/dev/sda1 = swap
/dev/sda2 = /
/dev/sda3 = /home
I redid the default partitioning scheme that Fedora tries to use (no LVM crap). Basically told it to make the above layout and to format swap and slash, but NOT to format /home because I want that data. I had it go ahead and install grub on the MBR of this HD as well. The install seems to have went ok and it rebooted. That is when the first problem comes up. I never see grub. I just get a black screen then a bar at the bottom that progressively turns blue, which I assume is Fedora loading.
This is all well and good, then it gets to the login screen (GDM) and I try to log in as root and it tells me "can't authenticate user" hangs for a bit, then goes back to the log in box. I try to get a virtual console (Ctrl+Alt+F#) and nothing. So I guess I have 3 problems in order of significance:
- Why no grub?
- Why no virtual console?
- Why root can't log in?
Normally I would edit kernel option line at the grub prompt to boot into single user mode and fix the problem, but can't. I was able to use the "rescue mode" on the Fedora DVD to accomplish this, but have not had a chance to figure things out any further. I don't think having a /home created by another OS would prevent root from logging in since root "home dir" is /root.
Fedora Installation :: Gnome 3 - No Login Screen / Solve This?
May 28, 2011I have recently upgraded my System from F13 to F15.
I use an ATOM Board with an Intel N10 graphic chip. It worked without any issue with F13.
F15 boots up, I can see the blue screen with the Fedora Logo. Then it changes to the background picture of gnome and thats is. No login screen. I checked the logs but I am unable to find any hint, why gnome does not boot up completley.
btw: With TigerVNC I am able to login.
What can I do, to solve this problem?

I upgraded yesterday to Fedora 12 and now every time I boot up, the fedora logo screen comes up, the "f" is filled up and after that the screen goes hazy. I was expecting the login screen but nothing comes - the system freezes sort of.

Jul 21, 2010I received the Ubuntu CD by mail the other day and tried to install a dual boot with it. I first tried it out by running from the CD and the first problem I had was the screen froze after the splash screen. So I lurked around for a bit and found out that I can press any key on the screen with the keyboard and person to get to a different screen. At this screen I entered "F6" and then entered "nomodeset", this allowed me to pass the splash screen.
Next, I got into Unbuntu but I found out that the keyboard and mouse weren't working, so I lurked again and found out that I have to enter "noacpi" (sorry if I got that wrong, I forgot the name ). I ran by CD once more and everything worked, so I decided to finally install it next to my Vista. However, after installing it goes straight to the splash screen, and the freezing happens again. The screen where the keyboard and the person are not showing up so I have no idea how add the "nomodeset" and "noacpi". So my question is, how do I get to the screen where I can add both those things? Also, is there a way to add it permanently so I don't have to keep pressing F6?

Nov 3, 2010I downloaded Fedora-14-i686-Live-Desktop.iso and used the Fedora liveusb-creator to put this on a 2GB USB stick. Everything seemed to have gone well and it said complete; however, when I try to boot from the USB stick, I get a black screen with a linux copyright notice at the top and it just stays at that screen forever. I tried this on two computers with the same results.
I'd previously tried with Ubuntu and had a similar issue, it would go to a purple (if I remember correctly) Ubuntu screen and it sat that forever.

Nov 22, 2009Fedora 12 randomly crashes after a fresh install.Everything is left at its default during the installation except I install KDE and not Gnome.When I try to boot I hit esc at the splash screen to see where it hangs, but it never hangs at the same spot twice. Sometimes it hangs and sometimes it restarts. Its crashed everywhere from starting udev to the login screen.
I've been using kubuntu for the past year because I have the same problem with F10 and F11.
I dual boot with Windows 7 for games.
System specs:
Motherboard: MSI P45 Platinum
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500
Video Card: Radeon HD4850
Memory: 4GB (2x2GB) Patriot

Ubuntu Installation :: Unplanned Visits To Login Window - Taken To Login Screen Three Times
Aug 18, 2010I have used Ubuntu since 7-4; I now have 10.4. However, in the last week I have been taken to the login screen three times. This could be potentially calamitous. Ctrl+Alt +Backspace have by default been disable since 9-4. There is no way I am pressing atl+Prtscr +K. I wonder if there is a new zap command in 10.4, and if so, how to disable it. I have never found the need to go back back to the login window. I am generally using the command line when doing this.

Jun 5, 2010I have just did an upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. I am planning to go to 10.04 . After the upgrade everything was ok but I noticed the GRUB was still legacy. So I updated my GRUB to GRUB2. Now when I boot, after entering my logon-id and password, it just brings me back to the login-id screen (to logon on). Any indication of what is wrong and how I should fix this ?
I have no encryptions. [added comments] Currently reading thread about login loop bug with 9.10 Followed instructions about possible missing pre-release update but even if it did do updates, I am still login screen looping. Doing additional researches until someone answers with the fix.

Fedora :: F13 Not Booting To Graphical Login?
Jul 19, 2010I recently installed fedora 13, everything was going great, now when my computer boots it shows the slash screen and then a blank screen and nothing. its been doing it the past few days, after a few reboots it'll work but i'm unable to figure out what is causing it and today it won't show the graphical login screen at all. after the Fedora slash screen the screen goes black the power button shuts it down as normal. ctrl - alt - F2 works and lets me login text wise but I can't get the graphical login to work. nor can I boot to KDE or gnome.I do have Nvidia drivers installed, normall it'll show the nvidia slash screen before the graphical login prompt comes up and that doesn't happen. I did try init 5 and it says Nvidia drivers are loaded. 3d was working just fine I haven't done anything that I can think of to provoke this.

Jan 19, 2010A few months ago my monitor broke and began using an old one that does not have EDID.Since then i havent been able to configure my computer with a stable video configuration.I`ve tried a thousand times to edit xorg.conf and i actually got it let me use resolutions higher then 800x600, but when i reboot my computer my usuall setting 1024x768 gets switched back to a lower one - its a pain... my icons get scrambled, the gnome panels, etc.Do I need to edit any other file then xorg.conf?
And another thing I noticed today is that the gnome display manager does not recognise the higher resolution of nvidia-settings. Does it have a seperate settings file?

I suspect that it may have to do with my ati radeon 9800 graphics card. give me some boot options or some such thing so that I could install fedora on my computer. Also some other specs

Mar 7, 2011This problem started within the last few minutes. I run a program in my browser that uploads data from my machine (ubuntu) to another machine (Fedora 13), for manipulation and then spits back the data that does not match our standardised information.
When I tried to run it a few minutes ago, it seemed to take a long time to make the connection. I went back and checked the machine, everything was connected and fine. I decided to reboot the machine from within KDE and then try again. Same result. I went to the machine again and tried to login through KDE, the screen goes black for a few seconds and then returns me to the login screen. I switched over to a virtual terminal and was able to login using the same credentials. I checked the .xsessions-errors file and this is what I am seeing:

Ubuntu :: Login To Xfce The Screen Goes Black - Flickers A Few Times Then It Brings Back To The Login Screen
Apr 12, 2011My last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.
Fedora :: Pre-F10 Booting Screen?
Aug 18, 2009I went directly from F9 to F11, and so "Plymouth" came as a very unpleasant surprise. I read the thread,

about getting the graphical animation, but it didn't address the root problem. Whether you see the animation, the bubble in the middle of the screen filling up with white, or the three-color bar at the bottom of the page, Plymouth seems to be completely useless.
I tried an experiment. I disconnected the eth0 cable and rebooted. Absolutely nothing appeared on the screen to show that there was a problem, much less what it was. With the old system, the progress bar would be immediately replaced with the "details" to show that eth0 "failed" to be started. If one wanted, which I often did, one could manually switch to see the "details" (all the processes and demons started) throughout the whole boot.
I just can't understand removing such an important feature of the boot process. Where do people get ideas like this? Being able to get into the real goings-on of an OS has always been the hallmark of UNIX/Linux systems. I hope I'm wrong, but it seems the new Fedora philosophy is more and more like Microsoft's.
But here's my question: Is there any way I can restore the way the boot screen worked under F9?
Ubuntu Installation :: Black Screen When Booting Into 10.10
Nov 8, 2010I have been trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 64bit on my Windows7 64bit machine. I created the Ubuntu installation on a USB stick and when I run it live from the stick, it works fine. Under Windows7, I created a partition for Ubuntu, and after reboot run the installation off the USB stick. During installation, I pointed the installer to the partition I just created, and told it to use it as "/" (root - this is the part where I think I could have screwed up, but I am not sure). I want to have both Win7 and Ubuntu on that machine. I did not create the SWAP file as I don't think I'd need it (this is a 8Gb RAM 3Ghz i7 machine). The installation goes without any problem, but then I reboot...
When I restart after installation, and any time after that, I get to the grub screen that allows me to pick the system I want - and when I chose Win7, everything's fine. When I want to pick Ubuntu, or Ubuntu in recovery mode, the screen goes black, and after a short while it seems the monitor itself stops receiving any input from the computer, as it goes into standby. There is no error message, no restart of the computer, no message after I select Ubuntu and click enter. Nothing, just total blackness and despair, and a monitor in standby mode.
