I am trying to do PXE boots for some servers w/o DVD/CD drives. I can do the PXE boot and load the installer boot image, but from there, I would like to have the installation media be from the internet, rather than a locally mounted disc. The boot installer will ask for the location (http or ftp), so is there one out there somewhere?

The 'Change device' button does nothing when I click on it during installation. I'd like to install the boot loader on my /boot partition. Is there some kind of bug that is preventing me from doing this?I am trying to install from the Fedora 12 386 DVD.

I just want to install server edition via network, from the host machine (my laptop, running ubuntu 9.10) with an ISO file (ubuntu 8.04 32-bit server edition). I managed to boot the client machine with pxe-netboot technique, but instead downloading all the files from internet, I need to do this process directly from ISO. To transfer ISO from host to client, I also installed Apache. I unpacked ISO file into /var/lib/tftpboot/server/. I created a link to the Apache root: /var/www

server folder is the place where I unpacked the ISO.
My dhcp3-server has this setup and it works well with netboot, but I don't know how to add Apache to the formula to transfer the iso file from host to client. Firewall is disabled. This is my edited /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf file.

When I pxe-boot the client, the process comes to a halt when tftp server is trying to access to pxelinux.0 file. I got thls error:
PXE-T00: Permission denied
PXE-E36: Error received from TFTP server
I have no experience with Apache... so I think there is a problem with my IP addresses.. Do I need to use 127.0.1.1 instead of 192.168.2.1 (my routers IP)?
If I wanted to upgrade multiple computers to 10.04 using a location on my local network rather than burn my broadband download quota at 700mb per install, where would I go to get the files or archive containing the upgrade?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhenever I'm dealing with large numbers of computers that need to have identical windows installations put on them, I love using Symantec/Norton Ghost to image the NTFS partition (just making the .gho file the size of the disk I've used, instead of the 160/320GB full volume size), and then uploading it automatically to a windows share.I'd love to be able replicate this exact process with Ubuntu. I have one computer that's ready to go, and a few dozen more that I'd like to quickly get that same image on.
I've heard that there's a command called dd that can make disk images, but I'd really like some sort of boot disk that can allow me to make an image, save it, then run the boot disk on another computer to allow me to reconnect to the server and dump that image on that computer. Ghost 4 Linux doesn't have a network/server component, I think.even if such solutions cost money, I'd love to know if they exist or not.
When I started off with fedora 12, I did not think I would be using more than 20GB for the file system. But recently I have been installing a lot of new games / software that have been using up that space. I however have the home directory on a separate partition. What I want to know is whether or not we can change the installation directory when using yum ? I know the other option (installing from source), but that would mean tedious handling of dependencies.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble installing Fedora 11 using the URL method. When I put in a F11 netinstall CD, or even Disc 1, I press tab on the first option and add "askmethod" to the end of the text. Each time I point the installer to my local FTP and press enter after typing in the FTP url, the installer just hangs there. I've even tried deleting ALL the files from the F11 folder on my FTP server and downloaded ALL the files at:
ftp://ftp.linux.ncsu.edu/pub/fedora/...edora/i386/os/
Still...the same thing.
When I pointed the installer to:
ftp://ftp.linux.ncsu.edu/pub/fedora/...edora/i386/os/
Everything worked fine, albeit slow as it was DL from the NCSU FTP server.
Am I doing something wrong with my FTP server? It is anon, so there is no authentication issues.
I have been windows using for over years and now after seeing Linux in couple of colleagues desk, I liked and have installed Linux in my home desktop (Fedora 14). After installing Fedora 14, I tried upgrading my browser Firefox from 3.6.17 (which came by default) to Firefox 4.0. I googled and got the procedure for upgrading tirefox. from this link [URL]. I followed the exact steps and while I tried to install I get the following error. I tried enough to get rid of this problem but all attempts in vain.
The Error that I get is:

I'm using yum install libxml2 and it says it's already installed. I need to configure php with the location of libxml2. Is there a yum command to show me where the libxml2 installation folder is? or any other package example apache ...etc.
View 2 Replies View RelatedGoing from Fedora 12 to 13. Got to the point where I have to reboot to install, system reboots to 12. This is a triple boot system with Open Suse and Mint, and the grub2 bootloader from Mint is the bootloader for the whole shebang. In the "how to use preupgrade" instructions there's a line that says "dentify the drive and partition of your Fedora /boot folder." How? If that sounds odd, consider that in my set up "computer" shows 4 partitions (and with just three operating systems..?). I can mount them, but have a problem telling which sytem is Fedora, Suse or Mint. And getting the FEDORA bootloader to find the PREUPGRADE kernel ... Momma said there'd be days like this.
cat /etc/fstab just returned /dev/sda1 on /boot. I installed Fedora first, before Suse or Mint, so being on the first drive or partition sounds right, but the multiple drives throws me, and "just guessing" doesn't seem like the way to go.
I am using Fedora 12 with VMWare Player 3. I want to install the vmware tools. To get them properly working i need the location of the kernel header files. In which directory are they usually stored?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI somehow recalled a rule re the location of the boot partitions with LILO being required to be in the first part of the drive (1024 cylinders, it seems) and I found it indeed in an old doc:
Boot Partition: Your boot partition ought to be a primary partition, not a logical partition. This will ease recovery in case of disaster, but it is not technically necessary. It must be of type 0x83 "Linux native". If you are using lilo, your boot partition must be contained within the first 1024 cylinders of the drive. (Typically, the boot partition need only contain the kernel image.) Is this still valid in GRUB, esp in Fedora 10?
I'm working with a program that uses Open Motif to create all of the widgets, including the Open File dialog box (obviously). However, Open Motif being kinda old-timey, 80's vintage, and for the most part now an abandoned project, it is quite clunky. So, actually what I need to do is to open some files located on my work server. I have already successfully connected to the relevant server directories with Samba, and with programs built with GTK+ (such as GIMP) I can open files across the network because I have created a bookmark in Nautilus, and those bookmarks appear in the Open File dialog box created by GTK+. Now, Open Motif is different: it doesn't see network locations, orNautilus shortcuts. When I type "smb://serveripyadayada" in the search folder, it really doesn't like it and complains. So, what do I do? Can I get somehow Open Motif to open a network location? Or can I do a run-around and place a shortcut in the file system that points to the network location?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI`m having a problem with upgrading my Fedora 11 to either Fedora 12 or Fedora 13. When i start preupgrade, it lists all packages that need to be upgraded, but then it ends with the message that none of the mirrors can be found. I`m seeing the messages in the console, and indeed all the mirrors return "HTTP Error 404: Not Found". Any idea how to change this and eventually do an upgrade?. I also downloaded the Fedora 13 DVD, and tried to upgrade that way, but it never showed me the window which must give me the option to upgrade instead of doing a fresh install. The explanation in the official website clearly shows that this window exist, but after several tries with the DVD I did not get it.

It's a bit of a fag having to change between them via the gui depending on where I am. Can the proxy be changed by command line because then I can set up a script to use the right proxy automatically? - e.g. use remote proxy if my mobile is connected via usb.
Had a google but don't think gnome-network-properties has command line options so I might be approaching this from the wrong tack.
We've just taken delivery of a new CD/DVD-less Acer PC. I need to install Fedora 12 on it.I've created a bootable usb drive using netinst.iso and it begins the installation. I was expecting it to ask me where to find the installation media on the network (I have a local repository on an intranet server with a copy of the F12 orginal DVD package set and a mirror of the updates repo).Instead, I get an error saying that it cannot find the installation, yet it never asks where to look.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi'm doing a fresh network install of f15 from a usb stick. the installation has now been stuck on the "retrieving installation information for fedora 15 - i386" stage for over an hour. on previous releases this stage has only taken a few mins. i can see from my router that there have been thousands of packets sent and received from the laptop. i've searched all the normal places but can't find anyone else reporting this. does anyone know if this is a known bug (and if there is a fix) or if this stage takes significantly longer in f15 to any previous release ? cheers.

finally got to the next stage after nearly two hours. no idea why it took so long.
I've been looking for the last few days for a good how to on setting up a home server using Ubuntu 10.10. I have found several and looked them over and have installed the server on to a system and started to get it setup. Now though I cannot access anything via http, even the php info. I want to start from scratch on this but finding the best tutorial on how to do this. The idea on what I plan to do is set it up to be able to hold mp3's on and allow them to be downloaded or played on other computers on the home network. Also will be looking to setup to have other items done as well such as a database that can accessed. I would like to be able to use both Http and Ftp on this if possible.

It's been on various distros over the last decade and I've read articles that say it's available although horribly difficult to find but I really would like to pin this one down. In Maverick Meerkat 10.10 we can apparently only chose between putting it in the MBR and the Ubuntu boot partition but I can't work out how.It's for an Ubuntu installation after Windows and I want to put Grub in the Ubuntu boot directory Not on the MBR because I am going to use a Windows based boot manager and it would avoid any boot loaders walking over each other to take over the MBR.

I have created a netinstall image based on CentOS 5.6 with kickstart which works great while pointing to the HTTP / NFS repository in isolinux.cfg like this:Code:label publisherkernel vmlinuz append initrd=initrd.imgks=http://192.168.0.198/kickstart/ks.cfg cdncontentpublisherThe problem however is that the location of the kickstart file and repository/ies might vary and I don't want to create a separate ISO for each and every location.
View 5 Replies View RelatedSo 1 year ago I installed Lenny, but in the process of installation during the splitting of the drive I have mistakenly set a seperate parition for "/var/logs" instead of "/var/log". Is there any way to redirect all the logs to this seperate partition (var/logs) or it's better to go through the whole trouble* of installing Lenny again? *the trouble because it was hell of a problem to fix grub that didn't recognize SmartArray RAID (cciss driver), the problem is that I don't really remember how I fixed it. Symbolic link won't help since physically it will still be on the other partition. Do I have any other option?

If we keep the installation file on other drive and just keep the link of that file/folder on root directory (/usr /bin /usr/sahre) then we can save our space of root directory. I found several times that my root partition is full after installing some applications. It is so painful to shrink or reallocation of root partition. Maybe this procedure of software installation will be helpful for the people who are already created low spaced root partition.

Sorry. An error occurred and it was not possible to install the bootloader at the specified location.
(Here I get to choose either if I want to choose a different place to put the bootloader on. Or if I want to continue without a bootloader or if I would want to cancel the installation.) I am currently writing from the live CD. And If I try to boot without the CD. The computer tells me that there is no bootable device. I have tried to reinstall Grub. I have also tried to reinstall the whole Ubuntu 10.10. I have also tried to install Ubuntu 10.04. Both with the original CD.
