i try to boot off the cd, it loads vmlinz and init.rd, anaconda starts loading.it mounts the temp filesystem and freezes. i can't choose how to install or anything. nothing comes up graphically.

I have tried the 4.7 GB DVD image, and the KDE Live CD, and both shows this. Also i tried UNetBootIn (is that what it's called?) and it's the same too.
I've been trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on my custom built AMD Athlon FX-53 system to use as a web server. I downloaded the AMD64 desktop version and whenever I boot to the CD it'll go through the loading screen, bring up the install background and then the mouse cursor will appear. After that the mouse cursor keeps switching between the loading one and the regular one and it never fully loads the installer.
The system specs are:
AMD Athlon FX-53 @ 2.4 GHz (Stock)
1 Gb OCZ PC-3200 ram (2x512)
PNY Verto FX5200
Western Digital 40 Gb IDE hard drive
based off an Asus SK8V motherboard (Skate 5 to me...)
I was able to install the 32-bit version and I've tried 2 burns, one on a CD-RW and one on a CD-R and the checksum is the correct one based on whats posted on the site.
I am trying to clean install Jessie 8.3.0 onto an old PC, where I already have wheezy 7.7 working. I am using the 3 DVD- i386, which passed the integrity check.
Installation goes on smoothly till completing the "Select and Install SW" stage from 1st and 2nd DVD. At this point I get the warning that "Installation step failed, ..", giving the choice to repeat.
When repeated, the process gets completed (without asking for 2nd DVD), the new installation boots normally, but the KDE desktop opens irregularly, with some basic applications missing, and some flaws during certain operations.
The APT does not show any missing/broken link. I tried and repeat the installation with different choices as for kernels and/or desktops, but got the same result. I cannot guess where the problem originates, nor whether it is a known bug of the installer.
I recently brought home an old Compaq server from work. I was told that it works fine. When I brought it home, I tried installing Ubuntu 9.10 server from a cd. While it's trying to install, I get the message "Installation step failed. An installation step failed. You can try to run the following item again from the menu, or skip it and choose something else. The failing step is: Load installer components from CD." I turned off the computer and tried it again several times. Each time the same message appears.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI know that there have been a lot of messages (with repo correction info posted) for yum updates after install; but I'm trying to do an internet install of F11 and I'm getting the same message. Obviously I can't change a yum.conf file for this -- but it does give one the option to edit the location.
The default location is: [URL].. There's one other big flaw with the internet install -- it writes HD partition changes to the disk right after you set up the partition scheme; shouldn't it wait until it knows it can connect to the repository?? I had to boot to a Ubuntu live dvd to get on here to post this. I'm definitely not saving time using the internet install option.
I got online last night and found some of the info. on the yum updates issue, with different mirrors or repositores. So what I tried changing for the default repo / metadata location, using the edit option is:
I changed the word metalink to mirrorlist. I changed https to http. I tried using http://mirror.liberty.edu/pub (etc) which is actually an rpm fusion mirror. I likewise tried http://mirrors.cat.pdx.edu (etc.) I gave up and went to bed, and this morning I just tried the http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/$releasever/Everything/$basearch/os/ (and I also tried the above redhat.com address substituting i386 for basearch and 11 for $releasever) -- no go with any of that. Same error message about cannot retrieve installer metadata.
All of the other messages I've seen on this issue have been about Yum updates; not installs. Hopefully the install DVD will show up in the next couple of hours; but I'd like to make this work if I can ??
I am doing a fresh install of Fedora 10 64bit on my PC. What I have done is, freshly installed Vista Home Premium 64 bit on the entire Hard Drive (680GB), then fired up the live CD and told the installer to resize sda1 (The windows partition) to about a 60:40 ratio. I intend to dual boot the system
Now the thing is, it's been running for half an hour now and there's no progress indicator on the installer so I don't know if its actually doing anything. Well there is a progress indicator but it's nonsensical, it just moves backward and forwards. The HDD indicator LED on my computer is flashing every now and again, but not constantly as I expect it to?

When I click okay, I expected a prompt to put in my password, but everything just closes.
After I do a fresh install of Fedora 10 and reboot the computer, nothing happens. All I get is a blinking cursor at the top of the screen. It's like Grub is messed up and won't load. Grub is installed on the Master Boot Record of the drive I need to boot from.
I have an ASUS P4C800 motherboard with one SATA drive that Fedora 10 is installed on. I also have a HighPoint RocketRaid 1740 SATA RAID controller card. When I take the RocketRaid card out, everything boots like normal, but when it is installed all I get is a blinking cursor at the top of the screen. I need the RocketRaid card because it houses my RAID5 array with all my documents. The reason I got the RocketRaid card is because it has linux support and my motherboard was listed on their compatibility chart. I had this exact same setup running Windows XP and everything worked fine. I did not load any drivers for the RocketRaid card and was going to do that after the system was setup. I don't know if that is the problem since the installer does not see the raid array on the RocketRaid during install. I was thinking that maybe Grub is seeing another disk and doesn't know what to do and sits there with a blinking cursor.
I don't know where to go from here and I am a linux newbie. On a side note. If anyone knows of a good linux book (specifically Fedora), please let me know.
So, I currently have Ubuntu on my laptop and would like to install F12 instead.I burned a copy of the F12 .iso and set my BIOS to boot from CDROM drive, but Ubuntu continues to load and I can't seem to get the OS to load for a clean install (from the .iso, even after extraction).Unfortunatly, the BIOS will not let me boot from USB otherwise I would try that.Any ideas on what might get this off the ground?

I have installed ubuntu 9.10, but when I try to boot it from hard drive, it would stop loading a bit after the logo appears. The screen would turn off while the system is still running. Live version of Ubuntu works after reports of errors. I tried to search for the problem all over the forum, and could not find a good lead to figure out the problem.
So far to figure out the problem, I verified if cd is corrupted. No issues there. Googled the problem, and seems like other users were able to install 7.04 (old posts).
Its so weird though that live version works and the installed version does not.

I have laptop ASUS X51RL with Intel pentium dual core inside processor. As mentioned here:I tried to install i386 FC12 on it. When the instalation was completed, there was a message to reboot. So did I, and while the BIOS was still loading, of course, removed the DVD in order not to repeat the instalation. Fedora started loading with the three varioants of the blue color bars and suddenly on the screenappeared a long message finishing with the words: "kernel panic - not syncing: fatal exception in interrupt " and that was all - the system stopped untillo there and never loaded For the last 2 days this is about my 12th attempt to get linux. Before I had tried about over 6 times with ubuntu, finishing the same way after the first reboot, 1 time knoppix and 2 times Debian. Only debian succeeded to load succesfully after its instaltion was complete, but I didnt linke it and a friend of mine strongly recommended me FC12. So what am I supposed to do??? I guarentee, my hard disc is not corruted as I read 1 hundred times on google, I had benn running windows 7 before I started trying to get linux and everything was OK... the install DVD is also OK, I tested it in the same beginning of the instalation and the test was successfull.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have an EeePC 4g netbook which only has a 4Gb hard drive and I thought I would like to install Fedora 13 on an 8 Gb SDHC card and use it to boot the netbook.
As neither the netbook nor I have an optical drive, I made a bootable USB memory stick using Unetbootin which boots the netbook and could be used like a live CD to install Fedora.
On booting with the live USB stick, with the blank SD card in place, and clicking on the install icon, the installation starts but then there are 2 problems; the first is that the installer appears to want to install to both the SD card and also the USB stick. There is a tick in the box beside the USB stick which I can't remove.
I decided to ignore that and put a tick in the box beside the SD card but when it got to the point where it creates partitions it said "Could not find enough free space for automatic partitioning. Please use another partitioning method"
Surely 8 GB is more than enough space for partitioning, so where am I going wrong and why does it want to install on the USB stick as well?
I had Fedora 7 and Windows Vista dual booting on my computer. I just installed Fedora 10. When the live CD asked me where to install it, I chose "Remove all Linux Partitions and create default layout" The installation went perfectly, but now when reboot my computer, it boots directly into Fedora; GRUB does not load to ask me which OS I want to load. I know I did not overwrite Vista because I can still view my Vista files through Fedora. Here is my grub.conf file:

I have found that APACHE or 'httpd' is installed in my machine. But the problem is I can start or stop the httpd but whenever I load the url http://localhost in Mozilla it shows a page load error.I have done this ,

I am trying to install Fedora 12 using the x86-64 DVD. My problem is everytime I try to install with the normal settings or basic video deriver setting it says "X failed to load" and so Anaconda never loads. How do i fix this problem. I have an Nvidia 7800GTX.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI backed up all my Wubi-files + the boot.ini etc. I reinstalled my Windows OS, then put my Wubi-files on a new partition D: . Put the wubildr.mdr file + wubildr in the C: dir. Changed the boot.ini to C:wubildr.mdr = "Ubuntu" . But when I select Ubuntu in the boot manager I get an error message (Couldn't load Windows, ntoskrnl corrupt - or something).What do I do wrong? Can't I just install a new Wubi using the installer and then replace the disk-file by the old one?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI had to re-install both win XP pro and Fedora 13 (dual boot) after Windows crashed so badly that I had a "read error" at boot, unrecoverable (at last for me) by running the distribution DVD in recovery mode.Now everything seems to work fine, but the software installer: it does his job resolving dependencies and downloading, but does not install. It simply stops without any message, leaving me without three programs that I badly need. yum from the console does exactly the same. It reports an error, as below, but it seems ecovered by using another mirror:

I am trying to upgrade RH9 to F10. I have downloaded dvd iso image i386. The SHA1 integrity check passes. The installer fails media check due to "errors". I did an independent verification of the DVD and zero errors found. Download was from Fedora's own torrent, so files should be verified anyway. If I bypass the media check I get the message : Running anaconda 11.4.1.62 the Fedora system installer - please wait.....

I'd like to do a fresh install of newly released Jessie with only Xfce in a graphical installer. When I come to the point where i have to select the DE to install, there are options: Debian desktop environment, and then ...GNOME, ...Xfce, ...Lxde etc.
I guess that with the first option, it's like in Wheezy - it installs the default, which is gnome. But if i choose the ...xfce option, do i have to keep the 'debian desktop environment' option checked, or will that just install gnome alongside Xfce? Do i have to check only Xfce as an option?
I'm trying to install Debian 8.1 LXDE 64bit on a Toshiba Chromebook cb30 from usb. When I select 'install' the laptop restarts and gets me back to the installer menu. I removed 'quiet' from the boot options and it seems that the reboot happens after initrd.gz is read. I previously installed the 32bit version on the chromebook and the installation process worked pretty much without any issues. I might have added 'mem=1024m' to the boot options, though even if I did, this doesn't do anything to my current attempt.
The chromebook processor according to `uname -a` is x86_64 Intel Celeron 2955U. how I could install the image or start debugging the issue?
I haven't used linux for a long time, after this break i wanted to install ubuntu and give it a shot but altough that i have a 10gb free space and another seperate 2gb free space for a possible linux setup, installer can't seem to recognize them.

1st trial: 10.04 installer recognized the last largest logical drive for system installation, but installer truncated the extended partition, and created the "terrible" 5th primary partition at the end of the HDD. GParted and other utilities cannot access to this 5th primary partition. (So, I restored the lost partition table on the HDD manually by MBM. But several OS were broken.)
2nd trial: To avoid making this "terrible" 5th primary partition, I located the largest logical drive for installation at not of the end.10.04 installer recognized this logical drive, but failed again.I tried GParted. but also failed to formating to ext4.Maybe, 10.04 installer failed at this formating step. Logical drives are not supported in 10.04 ?

Debian 8 installer does not detect the hard drive during installation
I've recently tried to installed Debian 8. The problem is that the partition menu gives me these 3 options:
1. Configure iSCSI volumes
2. Undo changes to partitions
3. Finish partitioning and write changes to disk
There are no options for defining partitions or any hard drive during installation. After searching the internet i found that the problem because the solid state disk SSD cache. How I install a Debian 8 with computer which has a hard disk drive and a solid state disk cache.

I have a laptop which has Xubuntu on a Wubi install. I have no way to connect my laptop to the internet, as I have dial-up on my desktop and my laptop doesn't have a dial-up modem. I need to install "libc6" as a dependency for libc6-dev, but when I double click the .deb (which I transferred using an sd card using my desktop, which has Vista) It shows the window for a couple seconds, and then closes. I already have libc6 installed, but it is an older version.
