Fedora :: Want NumLock Key On Upon Booting?
Oct 16, 2010I recently installed Fedora 13 (64-bit). I am completely new to Linux. I want the NumLock key to be on upon booting into Fedora. I have tried turning that option on inside the BIOS but it appears that Fedora ignores it. Is there perhaps a way to do it within Fedora?

Looks to me like the installation media for i386 doesn't have an i386 kernel! I'm trying to install to an i586 CPU.

Mar 27, 2009I have just installed Fedora 8 off a magazine dvd I had but it won't boot...What I have done is I got Easeus' Partition Manager 3.0 Home Edition and created a 25 GB partition, then i rebooted the system with the Fedora 8 disk in to install it whic it did, no errors, (but I did say not to install the boot loader because i have Windows 2000 installed aswell) then after it has installed it boots straight to windows. It doesn't ask me to boot to Fedora, it goes straight to windows.I am totally stumped as why I can' boot to Fedora.

Jun 24, 2010i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup,when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because,again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then,instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing,once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup,then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process,once i finished i continued to the next part,the installation,but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data,after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot,appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line,since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]
Fedora Installation :: After Booting From The DVD PC Hangs?
Apr 20, 2009I want to install fedora 10 on my PC. But after booting from DVD a screen comes which tells me to:
" - to install or upgrade in graphical mode, press the <ENTER> key - use the function key listed below for more information [F1-Main] [F2-Options] [F3-General] [F4-Kernel] [F5-Rescue]"
when I press "Enter" nothing happens, even the function keys does not work & after some time PC restarts. The DVD is ok I have checked it in my friends PC, it works on his PC very well. My PC configuration is:
Precessor : Core 2 Duo 2.20 GHz
Ram : 1 GB
Hard Disk : SATA 160 GB maxtor
OS : Windows XP service pack 2
BIOS Version/Date:Intel Corp. NL94510J.86A.0010.2007.0523.1650, 5/23/2007
I have tried to install fedora 10 in "virtual box 2.1.4" but the result is same.
Fedora Installation :: Booting From Non-C: Drive
Jun 14, 2009I have installed F11 on a secondary partition on an external hard drive (secondary drive is M:, I have put F11 on X: )
I also said to put the MBR (or maybe it's the grub stuff) on that partition with F11. I used ext3 as my Linux file system type.
But when I boot from that drive or even boot normally, I come back to Windows automatically.
I don't want to mess with my C: drive at all plus I want to keep most of that M: drive away from Linux.

Sep 2, 2009I installed Fedora 11 in VirtualBox, and the initial installation went fine. I then did a system update, and the video driver is broken. When I enter GDM, I have a black and blue screen, with the Fedora logo replicated across the screen.
I don't enter the Grub screen when I boot, and I wonder if there's another way to boot into runlevel 3. At one point, I'm prompted to type "I" to enter interactive mode, but doing this repeatedly still boots me into the GUI.

Downloaded the Fedora 14 i686 Live ISO file Used the Fedora LiveUSB Creator on my USB with the Fedora 14 ISO
I changed my BIOS on my Dell Inspiron E1505 to boot from a USB, then CD-DVD ROM, then Internal HDD Had USB inserted, then turned on computer.

And then it sticks. I've found two other internet sites that have had this problem. One is in chinese, the other is in french. I know french, but the 'solution' was not clear.

Nov 10, 2010This is my first attempt at using Fedora (the only other distro i've used is Ubuntu), and I'm having trouble booting from a USB device created using the LiveUSB Creator utility, containing the Fedora-14-i686-Live-Desktop disc image. Feb 2, 2011I have now Bt4 on live envir. and i am about to make space for Bt4 using Gparted from Bt ( live env) 'resize & move' at Free space preceding & Free space following on a 500Gb drive,I gave it 101 MiB. I see it says MiB instead of Gb .. but i am confused as to before & after does the before mean actual space fedora will have or is it Mb space for the bootloader a 100Mb or is that 10Gb ?

Feb 2, 2011I was using Fedora 14 without any other OS installed. That was until i realised i need After Effects because AE 6.5 under wine does not cover my needs.
I installed win XP. Everything's OK so far. Next step, installed Fedora 14. Also, it went OK. I reboot`d the system and i was presented the "mini-shell GRUB Bootloader terminal". Since i don't know anything about GRUB nor i am an HDD Expert i did nothing. But, i used the "System Rescue CD" and chose the "Boot an existing LINUX 32-bit OS". Fedora did load and i'm writing this post from within fedora. The setup i used during Fedora installation is the following.

When i was presented with the bootloader options i chose to "install bootloader on first sector of boot partition" (something like this i don't remember it) and i did NOT choose "install on MBR" (again i dont remember the exact phrase).
The HDD partitions i created have these properties according to "disk utility".

Apr 10, 2011I am using a Macbook Pro 5,5 , and I want to have Fedora and OS X dual boot. I have created free space using the disk utility from the Snow Leopard install CD. I now have 50 GBytes of free unformatted and unallocated space. So I enter the 64 bit Live CD of Fedora 14 inside, and it works flawlessly in boot. I click on "Install to Hard Drive" option and then of all the installation options I select the "Use Free Space" one. I then use the default settings:
It creates a 500M boot partition (/dev/sda3) and an LVM partition (/dev/sda4). ext4 and swap are allocated by default into the LVM Volume Groups. It then asks me for the location to install the boot loader providing me with 2 options: In the Master Boot Record (MBR - /dev/sda) or in the first sector of the boot partition (/dev/sda3). I go with the second option.
Installation proceeds as planned. While rebooting, I enter OS X and I install rEFIt. In the rEFIt menu, I select the Linux icon, which results in a black screen saying that "no bootable device" or something like that. I restart my Mac, and then select the rEFIt partitioning tool that says that my MBR needs to be updated. I let it sync my MBR, and I restart the computer. I click on the Linux icon again, and then I am presented with the penguin logo on a gray background... and that's about it.
I can't do anything from there. No system is booting, nothing is loading. Booting to my OS X partition works just fine, but Fedora refuses to boot. It is stuck in this logo screen.
Fedora Installation :: F14 And 15 Booting To Grub?
Aug 27, 2011I have tried and failed to install F14 and 15 on my system for a while now and I have been running Ubuntu in the mean time as it installs and runs fine as does Mint, and Suze.
My Pc is getting a little old now but is still very capable, however the Primary master Sata port seems to have a fault on it so I don't use that anymore as it ends up corrupting my hard drive after a few weeks.
I am running one hard disk on the secondary sata port which shows up as the primary slave in Bios.
When I install F14 or 15 all goes well till I restart then it boots to Grub with no errors.
I have tried assigning root in grub and it doesn't seem to think any hard disk exists from what I have tried, what am I missing?
Just to confirm I am running one hard disk on the second SATA port, Fedora detected it on install as sda1, and the rest of the linux partition as sda2.
I have tried this multiple times and the grub was installed to the MBR

Fedora Installation :: UUID Error While Booting
Apr 3, 2009I have 2 CPUs Which are Intel and AMD based. I used F9 before and didnt have any issues while I removed the hdd that I'd installed F9 on INTEL based and then put my hdd on my AMD based cpu. Well it booted and ran perfectly no issues came up.And then I've done the upgrade to F10 (clean install on INTEL). I do the same case above.But I got error msgs it said that the UUID cannot be found (I was using label on F9 fstab and worked fine).
I put back my hdd to intel based cpu and then try to edit my fstab and menu.lst (change UUID to LABEL). WOW I thought by changing UUID from fstab and menu.lst would resolve my problem but it doesnt solve anything. My devices (sda1/2/3, /boot, and /home) cannot be reconized.Well do you guys know how to change UUID to LABEL? and what exactly my problem?

Aug 16, 2009I am severely confused when it comes to partitioning. I have Fedora 11 on a liveCD now. I first tried to install that on to my Acer Aspire 1 netbook alongside another distro, but that failed due to my lack of partitioning knowledge. (It needed a /root device to install in I think).
Well, I would LOVE to have Fedora 11 with Vista (on my main laptop rig - acer aspire 7520) when I go back to college next week (go hokies). But I need Vista for work with my lab applications that uses windows. Can someone please provide me a noob-proof method to install Fedora without corrupting Vista? I really need Vista, but I really enjoy linux.

Jan 17, 2011I am shortly getting a new computer, It will arrive with Windows 7 on one disk and will have a second disk, on which I will install Fedora. In the past, when I've set up a dual boot system, I always used the standard configuration with the first part of grub put in the MBR. But this time I would like to put grub entirely in the Linux disk and then use Windows 7's boot loader to boot. I set up another computer that way where the disk originally came with Vista. But in that case, I set it up the standard way and then changed it afterwards to use the Vista boot loader.
This time, I want to set it up when installing Linux so grub is entirely on the second Linux disk. So until I manage to figure out how to get the Windows boot loader to do the job, I need a separate way to boot Linux, say from a CD with grub on it. But that CD should have the appropriate grub configuration on it. The easiest way I know to create such a CD is from Fedora, but there is the problem that I first need to get into Fedora to do it. I can think of several ways to approach that problem, i.e., using the installation disc in rescue mode or using some raw grub booter created from my old system. But I would like to keep things as simple and direct as possible, since otherwise I'm sure there will be false starts and a lot of fiddling.
So could someone direct me to some simple instructions to do what I want as quickly as possible. In particular, are there any options to do it in the installation process?

May 27, 2011downloaded Fedora 15 Live CD and made a booting live CD with it , everything went Okbut after the first screen " automaticlly boot after 10 s " everything just went creepy and the contrast of my screen has become very very low , I was able to see that unity booted but I barely could see the icons without being able to see anything esle , just dark*darkthe same happened with the usb live version .Im having a " Mageia RC " installed in dual-boot with windows 7 and I have the same problem with it . which means, the distro is there but cannot be used cuz the contrast is very very low

Jun 11, 2011I'm a former Ubuntu user who jumped ship to Linux Mint. I currently am dual booting Windows 7 and Linux Mint 11 using Grub 2. Is there a way to install Fedora last? Much of the reading I have done suggests Fedora needs to be installed before Mint/Ubuntu. By the way, I have searched the forums and it has been suggested to wipe out Ubuntu, install Fedora and then re-install Ubuntu. I would much rather shrink the Windows partition and install Fedora before Mint and update Grub.
