Fedora Installation :: Could Not Alllocate Partitions Installing F14 With Win7

Apr 16, 2011

I'm trying to dual boot F14 along side of Win7 and I'm running into partitioning errors - "Could not allocate requested partitions: not enough free space on disks" I used the Win7 Disk Management to shrink the C: drive by 100G, and the Disk Utility in F14 shows the unallocated space. Here is what the current layout looks like:

--210Mb bootable (sda1)
--168Gb (sda2) --Win7
--105Gb unallocated -- Future home to F14
--31Gb extended (sda 3) -- not sure what this is used for
--31Gb (sda 5) -- Lenovo drivers
--16Gb (sda 4) -- Lenovo restore

Am I running into the partition limit I have been reading about? If so, is there a way to get around this? I really don't want to delete the partitions yet.

Fedora Installation :: If Installing From The Live CD - Must Have At Least Two Partitions Available ?

Jun 10, 2009

Due to a combination of factors, if installing from the Live CD, you must have at least two partitions available. One will be a small (around 200 MB) /boot partition. The / (root filesystem) partition must be formatted as ext4 while the /boot partition must be formatted as ext2 or ext3.

The normal installation CD set and DVDs don't have this issue.

If you choose to install the Live CD and don't follow this scheme (you can, of course, have additional partitions besides /boot and /), the LiveCD won't install.

Ubuntu Installation :: Moving / Resizing Partitions Win7?

Aug 29, 2010

I have 1 HD with the following OSes, each on his own partition:

p1 WinXP
p2 Win7
p3 Ubuntu
p4 Ubuntu Studio
p5 Unallocated (not actually a partition)

I intended to create a 5th partition, formatted as NTFS, for data. That's when I found out that Windows only supports 4 partitions per disk (yeah, I know, should've looked it up first). On Win7 Disk Management applet, they're all listed as "Primary Partition".

I've come up with a few possible solutions: s1. Move partitions p3 & p4 down towards the end of the HD, and add half of the available space to partition p2 (Win7) and the other half to partition p4 (Ubuntu Studio).

s2. Move partitions p3 & p4 to the end of the HD, and add all available space to partition p2 (Win7).

s3. Increase partition p4 (Ubuntu Studio) to take up all the available space.

My questions:

q1. Win7 Disk Management applet gives me no option to move or resize (other than shrink) the partitions. Does this mean I'll have to use another partition manager (e.g., gparted)?

q2. If I move the partitions p3 & p4 (both Ubuntu), will there be any impact on grub?

q3. Is there any way to turn partition p4 to extended instead of primary? If so, what are the consequences?

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Split HDD Into 2 Partitions (Dual Boot With Win7)

Oct 4, 2010

I'm completely new to Ubuntu, and haven't actually installed it yet, so my questions aren't concerned about how I use it, but rather the problems of installment and more importantly how to get started. The first thing I got a little question for is how to split my HDD into two partitions in order to install Ubuntu, as I will be dual-booting it with Windows 7. The second thing I want to ask about is how big the risk of corrupting my HDD is when installing Ubuntu, and whether I can take some precautions in order to reduce the risk of said thing. The third thing I'm gonna ask about is how to get drivers for my graphics and that alike. And fourth and last: Is it going to make a difference that I'm running it on a laptop?

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot Win7 After Installing 10.10

Dec 25, 2010

I had win 7 installed, decided to install ubuntu on this desktop computer. I had a windows partition, and a few other partitions, one with a wubi install of windows that I never used, so I decided to delete it, while installing ubuntu 10.10. I had free unallocated space for installing ubuntu, which was contiguous to the partition of the wubi install of ubuntu, so I decided to merge them, I did all this in gparted while installing ubuntu 10.10, 2gb swap, then 15gb root and all that remained to home.

Everything worked out fine (of course I never touched the win7 partition). After reboot grub doesn't show win 7, so I thought I'll just add it to grub, followed a few tutorials on this forum, but nothing worked. Then I remembered that the partition which I deleted to merge with the ubuntu partition, was an Active partition, and soon found out that my win7 partition was not active! (this is probably because I installed win 7 while I had still win vista, so that active partition was where vista was).

So now a ~100mb apparently unallocated partition was the active partition (win 7 hidden boot partition?), and trying the Startup repair of win 7 cd doesn't work, tried bootrec /fixboot, successfully, but bootrec /rebuildbcd can't find any Windows installation, even after setting the win7 partition as active with DiskPart. This is almost entirely a windows problem, but I just wanted to have Ubuntu working alongside Windows (I use a lot adobe's sw, which runs sadly only on windows, otherwise I would use only ubuntu).

Fedora :: Multiboot - Installing F12 With XP / Win7 And Ubuntu?

May 14, 2010

I'd like to install xp, win7, fedora, ubuntu. I installed xp then I used gparted to create a partition before xp and installed w7 both can dual boot fine. I installed fedora 12 in grub I can see fedora and windows bootloader. I can get to win7 and login fine. When I go into grub, then win bootloader, then xp, I can get to the login screen, but I can't login. I enter my pw, it takes several seconds, seems to login, then quickly logs out. I see "closing network connections", then I'm back to the xp login screen again. I'm not sure why I can't login to the xp partition. Fedora and win7 work fine. Win7 & xp worked fine before fedora. Grub menu.lst looks ok. After fixing this, I'd like to next install ubuntu

hd0,0 - sda1 - w7
hd0,1 - sda2 - xp
hd0,2 - sda3 - extended
hd0,4 - sda5 - fat32 (data)
hd0,5 - sda6 - /boot fedora

Ran Wubi from the CD. Selected "Install inside Windows". Waited for the Ubuntu installer to finish and then rebooted. Selected Ubuntu. Ubuntu starts to load and all. Then it ask me to pick which partition where to install Ubuntu. I don't want to create a partition to install Ubuntu. I want it inside Windows.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing 11.04 As Dual Boot With Win7 / Stops After Setting Partition Size

May 5, 2011

I have Windows 7 on my laptop and am attempting to install Ubuntu 11.04 from CD.I boot from the disk drive, follow the prompts and eventually get to the screen where I can set how much space I want to give to the Ubuntu partition vs the Windows partition. My hard disk is 250GB, so I reduce the Windows one to 100GB (currently has 80GB of files on it) and set the Ubuntu one to 130GB (the other 20GB is split between the two hidden Windows 7 partitions).

I then click to continue and the progress bar for the install starts up but doesn't move, it just sits at 0%. I realised that the dialogue box underneath the progress bar can still be expanded and asks me to test using -n and -s, but when I type either of these into the box and hit return, nothing happens. I have checked my download of the .iso I used using WinMD5Sum and the hash matches up. I have already tried installing from USB but this threw an error, hence using CD. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1546 running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit Processor: AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-75 2.20GHz

Ubuntu Installation :: Recommendation For Installing When There Are Already 4 Partitions?

Mar 15, 2011

I got a laptop that I'd like to install Ubuntu on (I've done this numerous times before). But this one already has 4 partitions on it, and the Ubuntu installer complained that you can't have more than four. I know you can make a logical or whatever partition that holds others sub-partitions, but I'm not sure the best way to do it without destroying data from the other partitions.

The existing partitions include: a recovery partition, the primary windows partition (large size), a small boot partition, and a special partition for hp software that can run without booting windows. Can I convert the windows partition into a logical partition or something like that which can be divided up, without wiping out the windows files and data there?

And yes I know I can use the wubi installer, but I prefer a more permanent solution (Ubuntu is my primary OS, but I don't want to wipe out Windows at this point).

Ubuntu :: Size Of Partitions On A Win7 Box?

Nov 22, 2010

I would like to triple partition for win7, ubuntu, and all other files-data, music, etc. And I understand this can be easily be done via the disk management feature. Obviously a 2TB HD is huge for me and I probably will never come close to filling it. I will eventually copy all my files from my old pc, but that totals about only 10GB.

My issue is what should be the actual size of the win7 and the ubuntu partitions? How many GB for win7 and how many GB for ubuntu?

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing Over Existing LUKS+LVM Partitions

Sep 2, 2010

I installed on LUKS+LVM, and I want to preserve my /home without moving the data to any external media (I don't have any). My partition layout is as follows:

sda1: /boot
sda2: encrypted volume (sda2_crypt)
sda2_crypt: LVM volume group, with /, swap and /home.

Having many previous (sad) experiences with completely borked experiments and data loss, I've decided to try the trick in VirtualBox first. I've installed Debian (testing, netinst, Dec 2009) with encrypted LVM, and touch'd a file in my $HOME so that I'd know if the contents were preserved. Then proceeded to install Ubuntu 10.04.1 from the alternative CD. After the installer started and loaded some of the basic components (but before it entered the partitioner) I've switched to a shell and read a scroll of identification:

Code:

$ cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda2 sda2_crypt
[entered the passphrase]
$ lvm vgscan
$ lvm lvscan

* Another concern; after the installation, I've noticed that the contents of my $HOME were overwritten by Ubuntu's default skeleton (pictures, desktop, music, templates, and other crap). The control file I've touch'd after installing Debian wasn't there.

How do I know which instance of Ubuntu is used for each partition I selected when I reboot the box?

There are two different versions displayed and I always select the newer one but how do I know if I remove the right one or not?

Also, when I restart in Win7, the BIOS/OS wants to check the disk everytime and now I've started skipping this check (it takes several mins).

Installation :: Can't Boot Into Windows XP After Installing Ubuntu After Messing With Partitions?

Oct 30, 2010

I played a bit with partitions. I'm not an experienced Ubuntu user, neither I have solid understanding of partitioning. And I hardly remember exact actions that led to this problem. I remember that I saw a warning in GParted that said that the partition was out of bounds or something.. But I followed some solution that I found on ubuntuforums and used fdisk to fix that. So, after installation of Ubuntu I couldn't boot into WindowsXP (after choosing Windows entry in grub2 menu I see only blinking cursor on black screen). But what's more important that I can easily mount Windows partition from Ubuntu. Also I tried to boot from Windows repair console and used FIXBOOT command, and copied[url].... and [url].... files to no avail..Here is the summary of what I got now:

sudo fdisk -l

Ubuntu :: Gparted Can't See Ntfs Partitions Of New Win7 Install

Nov 11, 2010

i installed win7 ultimate on a 2TB HD and was hoping to dual-boot it with meerkat, i did a standard install and shrunk the partition using win7 disk management to leave 500GB for ubuntu.problem is ubuntu can't detect the existing win7 install, when selecting advanced setup it just shows one big unallocated partition.

i went back into win7 and extended the partition again, then booted into ubuntu live cd to see if maybe gparted would do the trick. gparted also cannot detect the existing win7 install and just displays unallocated 1.82TB.in terminal if i do 'sudo parted /dev/sda print' i get this message:

Warning: /dev/sda contains GPT signatures, indicating that it has a GPT table.However, it does not have a valid fake msdos partition table, as it should.Perhaps it was corrupted -- possibly by a program that doesn't understand GPT partition tables. Or perhaps you deleted the GPT table, and are now using an msdos partition table. Is this a GPT partition table? Yes/No? ^C

General :: Upsize Partitions On New HDD - Dual Boot (11.04 On Win7 With Grub)

Aug 12, 2011

I have been an MCSA for the last 20 years, but recently I have been very impressed indeed with Ubuntu 11.04, having dabbled with and then discarded Susi Linux some five years ago. My problem may be summarised as outlined below: Using the downloadable ISO I installed Ubuntu 11.04 as a dual boot on a Win7 100GB HDD on my Lenovo T61 laptop. No problem they both rock and I'm very impressed. During the installation procedure I selected the largest partition sizes available from the Ubuntu installer wizard being 25GB Extended split into 18GB Ext4, and 3.2GB and 3.2 GB swaps (I couldn't suss out any way of manually increasing them any further).

I found that the 11.04 Startup Manager application didn't work at all, so I downloaded and installed Grub Customizer 2.1..and that did work after a fashion.. certainly enough to actually effect changes in the grub configuration settings. Everything worked so well on the 100GB HDD that I decided to transpose the entire disk image to a new 500GB WD Scorpio and make the dual boot my main working disk. Using Acronis I imaged off the 100GB installation selecting the partition by partition, and retain disk signature options. I then recovered the image to the new 500GB HDD and everything works beautifully on the new HDD.

Except of course all the partitions are still the same size. I won't waste your reading time recounting everything that I have done using Acronis Disk Director (V Good) and Gparted (not so good), but needless to say whatever I do Grub won't have it, and I have lost count of the times that I have re-recovered the good image. Basically I want to increase the partion sizes to apportion larger partitions to both Win 7 and 11.04 and obviously I'm missing something somewhere.

Fdisk -l -u produces..
Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders, total 976773168 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
