Ubuntu :: 10.04 And Win7 With Virtual Box - Mouse Not Working
May 24, 2010
I am running windows 7 with virtualbox and ubuntu 10.04 as the guestos and the mouse used to work, but now it doesn't. I don't have guest additions and I can't get it because I can't login. Virtual box says the mouse is captured but it isn't working. I have the latest version of virtualbox.

I've been using Windows (7) a little, and I just noticed that the mouse movement is simply infinite times better than Ubuntu's. On Windows I was able to actually "draw" things using the mouse, and it's amazingly comfortable. You actually feel on control of it. On Ubuntu I've tried to reduce the mouse polling rate to 2ms, and a number of different speed and acceleration combinations, but It seems impossible to achieve the same quality (or at least something acceptable after trying Windows).
Now that I'm used to Windows' mouse movement, I feel extremely uncomfortable and have difficult even to target links on webpages. Is there a way to increase the movement quality? My mouse is a Microsoft Basic Mouse. I'm attaching a file of a circle drawn with mouse on Windows and an attempt to reproduce it on Ubuntu.

I'm not exactly a newb (anymore), but I'm trying to get F11 to install in a virtual PC environment on Win7.
I'm installing on a tablet PC, so I want to do the virtual thing first, to see if Linux can handle the touch screen the way I need it to before I put only Linux on here. The problem I'm running into is that the install wants to default to "text mode", which isn't really a problem, but upon the first reboot, the graphics are all messed up, and I can't get the install to continue.
Is there a command line I can modify to use standard VGA settings during the install, but "redetect" the display settings when the install is complete and I'm ready to use F11?

I'm running Virtualbox on Windows Vista.I have a Microsoft USB mouse (it says "Comfort Optical Mouse 3000") with left and right buttons, and a mousewheel in the middle. If I press down on the wheel, it pretty obviously makes a "click".I'm running Debian inside Virtualbox, and it's working great, but middle-mouse-click does nothing.Left and right click, and scrolling with the wheel, work fine.Is there any way to get middle-mouse-click to work in my virtual machine?

How do I add a win7 hard drive to a ubuntu 10.4 machine already running ubuntu, for dual boot? I really don't want to reinstall either one, so how do I fix grub to give Me a choice of OS's to boot up without using f12 key to choose boot order everytime ? , which works ok right now. I've done dual boots before, with both hdd's installed by installing winXp first then ubuntu, works fine in this order(winXp 1st then ubuntu ) because windows rewrites the boot order leaving ubuntu out of the mix. And even on the same hdd with partitions ,but can I add a hdd?. I removed linux hdd first then installed another hdd, installed win7, then replaced linux hdd. Both boot ok,but only by using the F12 key at start up and choosing a hdd to boot first.

Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 onto my new netbook from a USB stick. The laptop came with Win7 Starter, which I kept on a small partition. Installation was apparently successful, but when I start up the computer, it will go straight to Win7 and GRUB doesn't appear.

I had vista installed, then I installed Win7 on a dif. partition. Then I installed Ubuntu 11.4 over the vista partition (formatted first), and now I can't get into Win7. I'm really at a loss. I've tried the Win7 disk, and it doesn't detect the Win7 installation. I've also tried sudo update-grub, and it doesn't seem to detect the win7 install either. I've tried making the Win7 partition bootable using gpart as well. I'd like to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu, however I need to do that.

I have an asus 1215b laptop. For some reason, when I plug my mouse into any of the USB 2.0 ports it doesnt work. However, these same ports work perfectly to coppy files onto pendrives or external hdd. However, the USB 3.0 works perfectly for everything. The last thing I expected was the newer 3.0 to work and not the older 2.0. btw, my mouse is a generic, brandless laser mouse (it is an inhouse brand of PC CITY stores: PC LINE). I have never had any problems with it before.

This is the first time I have run into issues mounting windows shares but I really can't figure this out. Can someone put me out of my windows misery please.
First off, last week I rebuilt my work PC fromWIN7 32bit to WIN7 64bit since then I can no longer mount the window share on my ubuntu server:
I recreated my windows share called "Linux" and used the properties, advanced sharing and added everyone, full access and my domain account full access.
If I browse to \ipaddress I can see my share and access it. From a XP machine I can see the share and access it.
From linux I use the same mount point as before, /linux I use the same fstab and it fails
Code:
I try this manually now:
Code:
Next I try to mount it:
Code:
I looked at my firewall rules and they seem ok.
Next test was connecting to my 2nd pc on windows XP no probs mounted first time.
What is wrong with my new Win 7 setup?

I have read no fixes anywhere, oddly. This problem happened in 9.10 and seems to be back in 10.04. The fix on Ubuntu-Geek, which was re-posted various places, does not work either. However, I do know this is not a hardware issue... or think. I have a dual-boot with Windows 7 and it is not affected by this. Also, if I install anything 9.04 or earlier, this does not happen. Oddly, my netbook had 9.10 and now 10.04 but not this issue. Sadly I feel I must try other distros as this appears to be a Ubuntu specific error.

I've been facing this problem since months before I decided to find an answer. I downloaded a cursor theme from gnome-look.org and then installed it by dragging the tarball to the themes window. It said theme is installed. But the effects are not visible yet. I then shoot up firefox to see the new pointer working but not outside firefox. I even noticed the new pointer theme works in nautilus for all except pointing (it works while resizing, selecting text, loading but not the regular pointing).
I searched the forums and found a similar problem: [URL]
the solution doesn't work because there is no "cursor theme" option in ccsm. i've attached a screenshot too.
Is it a bug? do i need to disable compiz to "have my own desktop"? Is there a solution?

So my computer was slow with Karmic Koala, so I tried upgrading my build to Lucid Lynx 10.04.
Now I can't login because neither my keyboard nor mouse (and touch-pad) work. However, I can access the command mode (terminal?) though through the grub boot menu.
how I can get my mouse (and touch-pad) and keyboard to work with Ubuntu 10.04? My machine is an Acer Aspire 4730Z. I dual boot with Windows 7, and I'd prefer not to have to clear out the partition for Linux and reinstall.

I messed up my xorg.conf and tried to put in a clean one, but it doesn't seem to work. I'm not sure what went wrong. When X loads, the mouse cursor is not responding and my keyboard is dead too. I can't toggle to text mode either (Alt-Ctrl-F1).Hope the following files might explain what's wrong./var/log/Xorg.0.log
Code:
[ 26.835] (II) config/udev: Adding input device Power Button (/dev/input/event2)
[ 26.840] (II) No input driver/identifier specified (ignoring)

Usually I get a login prompt on Ctrl+Alt+F[1-6], but now I just see a blinking cursor in all of them, along with some boot messages in the first virtual terminal.
Code:
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.6
init: bootchart main process (462) terminated with status 2
init: bootchart post-stop process (474) terminated with status 127
/dev/sda2: clean, (integer)/(integer) files, (integer)/(integer) blocks
init: ureadahead-other main process (870) terminated with status 4
What's even weirder about this is that I uninstalled bootchart a few months ago. Whether that's related or not is beyond me, but the virtual terminals did stop working somewhere around that time. I solved this by reverting to my original /etc/network/interfaces file. Without the loopback "lo" device, the runlevel was never set, and virtual terminals never loaded.
This should be somewhere in the interfaces file:
Code:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
