Aug 31, 2010
I am more used to freebsd. I installed fedora in Virtual Box and tried to get on to the internet but it didn't work.
In the terminal, when issued ifconfig command, it shows eth0 and eth1..... I dont know if the wireless is installed or not.

Recently I have installed Fedora 14 on my other laptop. It's a dual boot with Windows 7. Everything worked perfectly fine, networking included, until my friend didn't accidently turned off the wireless by pressing a wireless button on the laptop. Since then the wireless on Fedora doesn't work. It does on Windows thought. I've tried restarting the laptop few times, but the wireless still doesn't want to work again.

I am an inexperienced Linux user, I have tried Knoppix and Ubuntu in the past. Since we use Fedora servers at work I have wanted to try Fedora for some time and I tried running it in a virtual machine. My virtual machine is Sun VirtualBox and my OS is Vista Ultimate. Everything worked well until it was time to decide where Fedora is to be installed.Alright, screenshot time yet? This is where I hit the wall, the screen where you select installation drive/partition. The field is greyed out as you can see.
I have prepared a partition, at first I formatted it in FAT32 but because I didn't see it in the installation screen I just re-formatted it in NTFS.Installing with virtual machine should be working? Why is the field grey? What to do? Is it because I have mounted the dowloaded disc image instead of burning it?
I have a 64-bit architecture AMD processor with 2GB RAM and have tried Ubuntu 64-bit in the past, is there a 64-bit version of Fedora and would that be better or worse for me than 32-bit version?

I'm running F15 -64. The latest program updates have somehow broken my VirtualBox (4.0.4, the one in the Fedora repository) installation. I have one virtual machine and trying to load it engenders the error message. Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908). The driver was loaded, I've been running the machine with (almost) no problems for a couple of weeks now. The suggestion for loading the driver doesn't work, it complains that it can't find any of the three programs vboxdrv, vboxnetflt and vboxnetadp. KPackageKit won't uninstall VirtualBox because it says there's a missing dependency. how I can unpick this to get back to either VM gone so I can reinstall it, or fixed?

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on an Acer Extensia lap top. Thinking about re-installing for two reasons:
1. I can't get the wireless connection to work. It did on the earlier version -- 9.
2. it kept all my previous installs even though I only asked them to save one other OS that I need. The second problem I could live with, though I wouldn't mind having the space that is used on these systems I don't want.
So, should I go back to an earlier version of Ubuntu? If I do re-install can I use the "specify partitions manually" option and get rid of the extra OSs? I'm not exactly a beginner, but neither am I an "expert." Don't want to get into highly technical fixes.
PS I think it may be a compatibility issue with Acer, as I use 10.04 on a dell and don't have the wireless problem. Do I need a driver?

I'm not exactly a newb (anymore), but I'm trying to get F11 to install in a virtual PC environment on Win7.
I'm installing on a tablet PC, so I want to do the virtual thing first, to see if Linux can handle the touch screen the way I need it to before I put only Linux on here. The problem I'm running into is that the install wants to default to "text mode", which isn't really a problem, but upon the first reboot, the graphics are all messed up, and I can't get the install to continue.
Is there a command line I can modify to use standard VGA settings during the install, but "redetect" the display settings when the install is complete and I'm ready to use F11?

My wireless network card, I think it's rtl8192ce, doesn't work anymore in Fedora 14. Following advices on this forum and elsewhere I've installed compat-wireless-next.
I've tried to install the driver myself (downloaded file 92ce_se_de_linux_mac80211_0003.0620.2011.tar.gz from the realtek web site), but get the following error message when running make:
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.35.13-92.fc14.i686.PAE/build: No such file or directory.
Even after installing development-tools as suggested in [URL] (though I installed them with sudo and not su - does that make a difference?).
Here's the output of lspci -nnk:
05:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device [10ec:8176] (rev 01)
Subsystem: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device [10ec:9196]
and of iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
I've also tried to check if the device is switched off using rfkill list, but that doesn't work:
Can't open RFKILL control device: No such file or directory.
The card used to work until yesterday.

Using x86_64 Fedora, with virt-manager, and trying to make a Fedora 15 virtual machine. Using Fedora-15-x86_64-netinst.iso to try to install it. When I boot the virtual machine, it gives the boot screen. If I choose the first install/upgrade option, I get console messages but it hangs when it gets to "Trying to unpack rootfs as initfs."

Error shown on screen is :
Building the shared folder support module [Failed]
I looked into /var/log/vboxadd-install.log, saw:
Error! Could not find module source directory.
Directory: /usr/src/vboxvfs-3.1.8 does not exist.
I check the path /usr/src/vboxfs-3.1.8 exist there right, so why do I get this kind of error?

I initially had W7 starter on this netbook, changed to linux mint 8 very quickly (as fedora seems to have bricked my old laptop ), and eventually decided to try fedora again. However, unlike on LM8, the touchpad and Wireless LAN do not work.
Netbook Model- Acer Aspire One D250-1515
Wireless Card- Atheros Communications Inc. AR928X Wireless Network Adapter
Touchpad- unknown (how can I find this out?)
These two issues kind of make the netbook rather useless as a mobile device.

i'm new to linux, and recently installed fedora 14 on an old hp pavillion dv2700. it originally had vista home premium, but the hard drive crashed and had to be replaced with a new one, which had no os on it. i installed fedora several days ago, and everything worked perfectly until a day ago when suddenly the wireless card wouldn't turn on anymore.
my sister was using the computer (just videos) and a few seconds after she handed it back to me, the wireless light turned from blue to amber, and it said wireless was diabled, even though i hadn't touched the switch. before the computer crashed, it had a problem of the light always being amber when it woke up from standby, but flipping the switch off and back on would fix it. now no amount of wiggling and flipping seems to do the trick.

My laptop is running Linux Mint 9 and I am trying to install Fedora 13 in a virtual machine within Virtualbox. However, it's not working. It takes forever to get past the initial white/blue loading bar when it first boots and then it just goes white, so I can't see anything. I've already tried modifying the bootline parameter of the live CD to include noprobe, noacpi, noapic, nousb, and nofirewire. However, the result is the same. Am I missing something? Is it possible to install this?
