View 5 Replies View RelatedThe problem is when I boot from the lubuntu CD & select Try Lubuntu or Install Lubuntu the computer hangs. Xubuntu 10.04 was aready installed & I could easily boot to it. I thought may be some partition table error is causing that issue & I deleted all the existing partitions with Parted Magic Cd in Console Mode.
NB: When I tried to boot to the Parted Magic graphical session the PC hanged then too.I am totally confused. Cant understand what is going wrong here. I am now left with a broken system.
I tried to upgrade my Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 on my netbook. I choose the option to upgrade on the Update Manager. All packages had been downloaded, and the installer was busy to replace all the old packages.
During the update I noticed that my internet stopped working, so I disabled my wifi, so it couldn't interupt the upgrade. After a half an hour, I found out my internet worked again, so I pressed the wifi-button again on my laptop, so the wifi would turn on, but after that move my screen hanged, and the upgrade wasn't done yet. I pressed the powerbutton for 5 seconds, because there was nothing else I could do.. Everything just hanged, no mouse movement, no hard disk activities, just a frozen screen.
After this problem I rebooted, and I already knew what I was going to see, Ubuntu couldn't be loaded anymore (and it still can't).
Is there anybody who can help me to restore my laptop? There are really important things for college on the harddisk in the /home/ folder, but I was too stupid to forget to make a backup.. I mostly make backups of everything you can think of, but I thought it won't be neccessary.. damn..
I know that you can restore files using a live-usb (no cd, because it's a netbook), but I choose during the installation the option to 'encrypt' my documents.. So is it still possible to restore my documents, photo's etc. from the home-folder? I really need to get those things back..
When I try to boot all I get on my screen is the text (in Dutch): 'Disk partition / is not ready or is not found - Keep waiting or press S to cancel mounting, or press M to recover manually' The manual recovery doesn't do anything at all, and by the way, booting in the 'recovery mode' won't work either.
I was able to get Fedora 10 to run on VirtualBox. Since the system wouldn't let me set the resolution to anything bigger than 800 x 600, I decided to get the nVidia driver (I'm running the nVidia 8400m G). I did it through this guy's tutorial: [URL]... After rebooting, I see the loading bars and everything, but I get a blank screen with a cursor. After pressing ctrl+alt+F3, I was able to log in to the root and execute the "akmod builds the required kmod on bootup" under the "For GeForce 8 series" [URL]... After a reboot, I still get the same thing. Will I have to reinstall Fedora 10 and just not update the nVidia graphics drivers? I have a 20" monitor that has a resolution of 1600 x 1050 and I would really like to take advantage of that.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 12 and it won't reboot from hard drive. It boots only from installation CD. I have motherboard MS 6163 and graphic card Nvidia TNT2 pro. Do I have to change something in BIOS setup? If I need to install another driver for NvidiaAnd, please tell me if some other Linux package is better for my hardware.
View 11 Replies View RelatedJust got done installing F14 64 and all went well however when I rebooted the machine it boots straight into windows, where is my GRUB boot loader? Only one drive in this machine (sda) and I remember going through the GRUB settings during the install. How to get a bootloader working now because in my linux experience (since RH5) it has always just installed the bootloader and worked. Apparently ext4 is bunk for me and when using LVM settings. I am up and running and grub is working.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI don't follow why the Suspend option is there and the Reboot and Shutdown is not. Can anyone guide me to the code needed to add the selections. I know I can use a Terminal to shutdown or reboot but a simpler solution would be nice. I expect there are methods to fix most of what I don't like about Gnome 3 but I haven't found them yet. Is there a central place for the solutions needed to deminimalize Gnome 3? I really prefer one click control.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just got an update that installed, and after a reboot I've got one core at 100%. The "you need to restart" icon in the notification tray said "glibc glibc glibc glibc nscd". Now that I look at it, It's switching between both cored. This behavior is consistent over multiple full reboots as well as kexec reboots.
Edit: Strange, just when I finished, the CPU load settled out and now everything is fine. I wonder what was going on. I'm rebooting right now to double check. Edit2: Yep, same issue 100% usage on one core. And it probably will level out soon. I'm not sure what could be causing this. I assume that glibc could be the issue.
I'm running F14 on an Intel i5 processor with a NVidia GT340 graphics card. Installation works great. Compiz Fusion runs too. At this point, the panels are a little unpredictable, in the sense that some items on the panels disappear and appear as they please; changes only come during startup. The userswitcher is usually absent (but not always). The show desktop icon is sometimes absent, and on a very rare occasion, the desktop switcher is invisible. For all of these items, space is reserved in the panel, and when manually added to the panels, that space is left blank; I can not move anything into that space. It remains reserved for the item that isn't shown.
Then I install conky. First installation works fine, shows all things that are called upon in the .conkyrc file nicely. It works fine until I click anything - even on blank space - on the desktop. Conky then disappears. The process continues to run, but it's no longer displayed. Upon reboot, all of my panels disappear, and I have no idea how to get them back. When I uninstall conky everything works again as before (the userswitcher being the least predictable item on my panels). When I reinstall conky, and add it to my startup items, it shows for a couple of seconds after log-in after which it disappears. I assume - but don't know how to check as I have no panels left so how can I run the system monitor - that the process keeps running, but it isn't displayed.
When preupgrade reboots, what's supposed to happen, and in what amount of time? I've tried it twice, trying to upgrade my desktop from F14 to F15 (Gnome). Both times, the download took about 40 minutes, but the reboot just sat there, with the cursor blinking in the upper left corner - no GRUB, nothing. When I then restart with Ctrl+Alt+Del, I can use the BIOS boot menu to pick the disk with F14, and it starts normally with no clue that anything has changed. Is something wrong here that I can fix?

The process took quite long and when it was about to finish the screen started blinking and the keyboard was not responding. I rebooted but couldn't restart, the process stucks when the progress bar becomes white! I later tried the live CD and found out that coreutils have been removed too, so I installed them but nothing changed.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Laptop ( Samsung R510 Driton (Aura Series) with Win XP installed, and wanted to install fedora 10, too, as i really want to test a few things in linux and get a little knowledge there....
I Installed fedora with his guide: [url]
And as for Dual boot i also read this guide: [url]
I created root, home, swap (8 gb), usr, var all in all about 100 gb (i know its much, but i have enough space :)
After the installation, fedora wanted to restart my laptop, i let it restart and GRUB came up, i chose "fedora 10" pressed enter and the laptop just restarted....did the same thign again, andn ow fedora was about 2 secs in the loading screen and then restarted again....i've chosen windows and the laptop isj ust restarting...i tried windows again and windows is loading ....but i dont get in fedora 10....
Here are the specification of my laptop:

I tried to install F12 on my new IDE-HDD. The installation completed without any errors. But, when rebooting my PC I got a dark screen with error message: reboot and select proper boot device.
No BIOS boot up issue, since booting up using other hard disk running windows has no problem at all. I have set the hardisk jumper to master/primary, tried to re-install F12 a couples of time, but didn't make any difference.
I have laptop ASUS X51RL with Intel pentium dual core inside processor. As mentioned here:I tried to install i386 FC12 on it. When the instalation was completed, there was a message to reboot. So did I, and while the BIOS was still loading, of course, removed the DVD in order not to repeat the instalation. Fedora started loading with the three varioants of the blue color bars and suddenly on the screenappeared a long message finishing with the words: "kernel panic - not syncing: fatal exception in interrupt " and that was all - the system stopped untillo there and never loaded For the last 2 days this is about my 12th attempt to get linux. Before I had tried about over 6 times with ubuntu, finishing the same way after the first reboot, 1 time knoppix and 2 times Debian. Only debian succeeded to load succesfully after its instaltion was complete, but I didnt linke it and a friend of mine strongly recommended me FC12. So what am I supposed to do??? I guarentee, my hard disc is not corruted as I read 1 hundred times on google, I had benn running windows 7 before I started trying to get linux and everything was OK... the install DVD is also OK, I tested it in the same beginning of the instalation and the test was successfull.
