Fedora Security :: Become Root Without Root Password?

Oct 20, 2010

I found this on Bee's website. For more info on this exploit there are links there:[URl]..All you have to do in Fedora 13 is enter the following lines in a shell as normal user:

[Code]...

I don't think this can be considered solely an "upstream" problem, because I first tried it in Arch using the same version of glibc, and the final command causes both gnome-terminal and xterm windows to disappear.

Ubuntu Servers :: RAID Volume Won't Activate After Reboot During Sync?

Jul 24, 2010

I've got a file server with two RAID volumes. The one in question is 6 1TB SATA drives in a RAID6 configuration. I recently thought one drive was becoming faulty, so I removed it from the set. After running some stress tests, I determined my underlying problem hadn't cleared up. I added the disk back, which started the resync. Later on, the underlying problem caused another lock up. After a hard-reboot, the array will not start. I'm out of ideas on how to kick this over.

Code:
$ cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [linear] [multipath] [raid0] [raid1] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] [raid10]

Fedora Installation :: F14 Can't Activate The DSL

Dec 6, 2010

Successfully installed F14 X64 from commercial install disk (pure vanilla graphic desktop/install repo/customize later). Booted system, DSL connection not active. system => network configuration => devices => new => xDFSL connection reports "you have to install rp-pp0e. Not on installation disk. Without connection to my router, YUM can't be used; my windows 7 laptop does neither command line ssh or git in order to reach the fedora repository and of course Firefox can't (yet) do http access. Short of ordering the entire distro on DVDs, is there any way to activate my DSL link? (I have the entire 3.3 Gb .iso file and have been unsuccessful in creating a bootable DVD in Windows land.)

Ubuntu Installation :: Root Password For Software Installation?

Mar 19, 2010

I've recently had Ubuntu installed onto my Acer laptop after everything went haywire with it (a long story, which I won't bore you with). I've used ubuntu for about a year now, and never had this problem before:

I can install programs through the terminal, using sudo apt-get and my user password, but when I try to install anything through the Software Centre I get a message (see attached screenshot) asking for the root password for the 'superuser'. Now, I don't remember setting such a password, and if I did, I will have used on of my regular passwords (none of which work here). What's going on, and how can I solve the problem?

Fedora :: Can't Change The Root Password

Jul 30, 2009

I got during my last year of high school, and I recently installed Fedora 11. During the installation, I misunderstood one of the questions, and set my root password as what I wanted my account password. I want to go in and change it, because it's pretty easy to figure out and has me feeling really vulnerable, but it won't let me. I went to System-Administration-Root Password, entered my password, and put in a new one, but it won't let me click Change Root Password. The button is faded out and unclickable. I've tried several different passwords, and triple-checked each to make sure I typed it in correctly, but it won't work.

Red Hat / Fedora :: How To Verify The Root Password

May 26, 2010

I want to verify the root password. I am using rPath linux and my use case is like this: 1. There is screen in my application through which user can change the root user's password. He provides 2 information in the screen

i. existing password
ii. new password

2. I use a shell script in the back end that uses the "passwd" command to do it. And it doesn't ask for the existing password. But, my business use case is if user enters wrong existing password, I should not reset the password and throw some error message. How do I verify the existing root user's password? And also keep in mind that I am already in that linux box (logged in as root). Also let me now if there is any smarter way of doing it other than "passwd" command.
