I tried to upgrade my Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 on my netbook. I choose the option to upgrade on the Update Manager. All packages had been downloaded, and the installer was busy to replace all the old packages.
During the update I noticed that my internet stopped working, so I disabled my wifi, so it couldn't interupt the upgrade. After a half an hour, I found out my internet worked again, so I pressed the wifi-button again on my laptop, so the wifi would turn on, but after that move my screen hanged, and the upgrade wasn't done yet. I pressed the powerbutton for 5 seconds, because there was nothing else I could do.. Everything just hanged, no mouse movement, no hard disk activities, just a frozen screen.
After this problem I rebooted, and I already knew what I was going to see, Ubuntu couldn't be loaded anymore (and it still can't).
Is there anybody who can help me to restore my laptop? There are really important things for college on the harddisk in the /home/ folder, but I was too stupid to forget to make a backup.. I mostly make backups of everything you can think of, but I thought it won't be neccessary.. damn..
I know that you can restore files using a live-usb (no cd, because it's a netbook), but I choose during the installation the option to 'encrypt' my documents.. So is it still possible to restore my documents, photo's etc. from the home-folder? I really need to get those things back..
When I try to boot all I get on my screen is the text (in Dutch): 'Disk partition / is not ready or is not found - Keep waiting or press S to cancel mounting, or press M to recover manually' The manual recovery doesn't do anything at all, and by the way, booting in the 'recovery mode' won't work either.
I am using CentOS 5.3. output of "uname -a" Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.18-92.el5 #1 SMP Tue Jun 10 18:49:47 EDT 2008 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
My kernal version is kernel-2.6.18-92.el5
Whenver i try to copy files from my centos to pendrive ( 2gb, kingston datatraveller) my system is gettin hanged leaving no option then to reboot. i tried from the terminal also, and as a diffrent user also. but same results. sometimes i can copy files of small size. but when i go above 5 mb..system hangs..
I installed a slack 13.7 on an old laptop. KDE was set as default desktop. then I login and run startx and I saw KDE first screen display. after that I saw blank screen with a mouse on it. Then it stayed there and it seems try read some in my harddisk since the persistent harddisk light.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was updating grub and for some reason the system hanged. Going to a tty did not solve any problems. At the end I had to do a hard reboot and came up with the following on the grub boot
reloc offset is out of segment Entering rescue mode grub rescue >
Googling for the above I landed on this page.

While I'm going to try the later part, is there anything else I need to know about ?
Didn't have to do much, took the the Squeeze 6.10.a DVD, asked it to run into rescue mode and then did grub-install giving the MBR (hd0) as the place to be. Things worked nice after that.
Upon booting had to run
dpkg --configure -a
and it updated grub to 1.99-5 among other updates. Did not know that Squeeze had a rescue method as well (just like Ubuntu live CDs have). Now just have to wait for Debian to get Live CD/DVD as default
When i join my ubuntu 11.04 Desktop into video conference (about 30 minutes), it hanged and could not carry out any operation, keyboard hanged too

Just installed CentOS 5.5 in text mode because the GUI mode keeps hanging midway installation. The text mode installation worked sucessfully but when the installation finished and rebooted the system i got the localhost login thing which i typed root and provided my password, logged in successfully but then the cursor was just blinking waiting for the next command, i then typed startx but immidiatelythe screen goes blank and hangs. I guess the problem has to do with vga but i'm newbie and don't knw what next to do.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThe problem is when I boot from the lubuntu CD & select Try Lubuntu or Install Lubuntu the computer hangs. Xubuntu 10.04 was aready installed & I could easily boot to it. I thought may be some partition table error is causing that issue & I deleted all the existing partitions with Parted Magic Cd in Console Mode.
NB: When I tried to boot to the Parted Magic graphical session the PC hanged then too.I am totally confused. Cant understand what is going wrong here. I am now left with a broken system.
I have an intel DP35DP motherboard - ICH9 southbridge - set to AHCI mode. Working fine under 5.2. Yesterday I updated to centos 5.3, and got kernel 2.6.18-128.1.16 and now it can't boot. It hangs trying to read sata1 with DRDY errors and exceptions. So then I installed 5.3 from a DVD onto a new drive, and got kernel 2.6.18-128. This worked, most of the time, but occasionally gave me this error. I then updated my BIOS, and the error went away. Then I updated this new working drive to the latest kernel (yum update again) and got kernel 2.6.18-128.1.16, and now it wont boot again, with the same message.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have encountered the same problem as indicated in this post: "udev hang after upgrade from 5.3 to 5.4"[URL]... I'm testing the upgrade path to centos 5.4 on several virtual machines prior to upgrading our production systems. I have upgraded centos 5.2 --> centos 5.4 and centos 5.3 to centos 5.4. In both cases udev hangs after the upgrade. The following message is displayed on the console: "Starting udev: Wait timeout. Will continue in the background [FAILED]"
I found another related post: "udev hangs on boot for a long time, suspect pam_console_apply"[URL]..So, I booted by VMs using the "udevdebug" option to grub and received the same error message - "udevd-event [###]: run_program: Waiting ## seconds for output of '/sbin/pam_console_apply /dev/..."
In my /etc/ldap.conf file "bind_policy hard" is commented out. I added a line "bind_policy soft" as described in the post and my VMs booted fine. NOTE: This problem is not encountered with a fresh install of CentOS 5.4 and the "bind_policy hard" option in the /etc/ldap.conf is commented out as in the upgraded systems. What is really causing this problem and how do I get it addressed? I have a couple hundred systems to update from various releases of CentOS 5 to the latest current version 5.4. It would be nice to get this bug squashed..

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been living too long in apt-land, that's for sure. One of my servers is for an application the vendor indicates "isn't supported under 5.3". Nevertheless, I'm urged to upgrade from 5.2 with 178 packages ready to go when I log in. And for most hosts, that would be a fine thing.
However, for this particular host, I don't want to do that. I do want to upgrade any essential packages (i.e., security), of course, because I don't have a choice there, really. I can certainly look at the security emails from the project, and just upgrade those. Is there an easier way to do this?
What is the best way to upgrade to PHP 5.2? I am currently using PHP 5.1. Is the only way to use the testing repositories?

The developers have asked me (the SysAdmin) to upgrade the server to 5.3 -- but not all the way to 5.4, as they haven't tested the app on 5.4 yet.I believe a simple `yum upgrade` will move me all the way to 5.4 -- at least, `yum check-update` shows a whole bunch of 5.4 packages.
