Fedora :: Way To Easily Manipulate Photos And Scans

Jul 17, 2010

I own Fedora Core 12 and an HP scanner. I want to make digital copies of all the pictures I took a few years ago. I have a lot so I tried scanning five at a time thinking I could cut and paste into smaller images like with MS Paint on Windows. HPLIP 3.9.12 wouldn't let me modify the scans so I tried GIMP 2.6.10. GIMP 2.6.10 is a nightmare! When I opened my scan of five pictures I had trouble opening a new image. Then I had to specify the size of the new image. The when I cut and pasted I couldn't rotate. Then when I figured out how to rotate my image was too small.

Then I tried scanning just one picture but HPLIP left a lot of blank space. I tried cropping out the blank space with GIMP but the image size was the same with the blank space. I don't want to post photos to Flickr that are mostly empty space.I wish I could show you examples but the forum won't let me post them.Any ideas or suggestions for a program for Fedora Core 12 that's got the functions and features of MS Paint?

Fedora :: Using Sed To Manipulate A Line In A File?

Nov 16, 2009

My latest rpm package building project is a ham radio program called rmsgw. The source code tarball is a "make" and "make install" affair. It's Debian style Linux format fails badly on a Fedora install, so some tweaking of a configuration file is needed.I presume sed is the right tool for this job. I have no experience with sed and I don't want to spend a week or more in 'info sed' and doing endless trial and error if I can avoid it. I need to change one line in a text file named rmsgw.mk with a command(s) in the spec file. The original line:

Code:
PKG_LIBS := -lwl2k -lrms -lmysqlclient -lxml2
The line as it needs to be for 'make' to succeed to build the binaries:

[code]...

Fedora Security :: Faking OS Fingerprint Scans (defeat Nmap)?

Oct 4, 2010

Are there any possible options to archive this w/ the 2.6.34 kernel? I know windows can do this w/ a button and BSD can drop packets when connected to closed ports...is IP personality usable in 2.6? Do I need work-arounds? any more options??Currently I've managed to @%#$ my OS fingerprints so results won't show as Linux.4/2.6...etc, but the problem is.. instead it's got the word "Redhat" in it (which is well... worse... because now.. if someone looks at my machine he/she'll know I am on either RHEL/Fedora )

Fedora :: Scan 35mm Negatives With HP 3310 - Get Higher Quality Scans?

Feb 21, 2010

I have a HP 3310 multifunction unit. Using HPLIP system it will print quite happily (though oddly the printer has to be on before the computer has booted for the networking to work! Now I'm trying to get the hang of scanning 35mm negatives using it + Fedora 12 (32bit). xsane seems to be the way forward, I can get a poor scan back but seem unable to find a way to tell the software I am scanning negatives and so to only scan the areas containing the film strip (HP provide a negative holder taht fixes the strip in right place on glass) to get higher quality scans. Anyone with any experience of scanning 35mm negs using HPLIPs/xsane/HP3310 ?

Fedora :: Use Blank DVD RW As Easily Accessible Writeable Media

Jan 4, 2010

I've used dvd+rw-format -format=full /dev/sr0 and K3B to format a blank DVD RW.I reinsert the disk and it's not seen or auto-mounted as writeable media. In the past, I've written one file to a blank DVD RW in Windows XP, insert the disk back into Linux and I can use Dolphin to read and write to the disk as though it had been auto mounted as a removable storage media device in KDE4.Is there a solution to use a blank DVD RW as an easily accessible, writeable media in Linux?

Fedora Installation :: Format A Windows Partition So Can Easily Access It?

Jan 22, 2011

My old computer came with two disks, with Windows XP on one. I installed Fredora on the other.
I also resized the c: partition on the first disk and added a second partition which I formatted as fat32.
I then mounted that partition with its entry in /etc/fstab such that I could write to it as myself.

I have a new computer, 64 bit and running Windows 7, which I want to organize roughly the same way. I will install Fedora 14 on its seond disk. I've shrunk the c: partition under Windows using Disk Management. I want to create a 100 Gb D: partition on the same drive in the remaining space, and I want to be able to access both c: and D: for reading and writing by root and I want to be able to access the d: drive for reading and writing also by myself. Since it is a 64 bit machine, my choices for formatting the d: drive are HTFS or exFAT. Does it matter which I choose so that I can do what I want? How does Fedora treat exFAT?

Can anyone remind me which packages I need to add in order to be able to read NTFS file systems from Fedora? Can I also write to such a file system as root?

Can I write to such a file system as myself if I mount it properly?

Fedora Networking :: Easily Share A Folder With A Windows Computer In 15?

Jun 18, 2011

Was trying out Fedora 15 but could figure out something: How do I share a folder?

When doing some Googling all I could find were forum posts on how to manually configure samba with smb.conf (a place I refuse to go, its 2011 people), and gnome-user-share which only shares ~/Public and doesn't show up on my Windows computer.

I do know that at least in Ubuntu 10.10 with Gnome 2 all I had to do was right click on a folder at click Sharing. I'm looking for similar ease of use in Fedora.

Fedora :: Import Digital Photos Via USB?

Sep 12, 2009

I'm running GNOME on Fedora 11. My daughter is shortly due to take possession of a digital SLR camera - a Canon EOS 400D. Apparently it comes with a USB cable. I know very little of photography, or of image stuff on Linux, so I have a few questions: Will I be able to connect it to my Linux box and import the images? Is gthumb-importer the appropriate application for this? Is there better? Are the images jpegs, or something else? I only need to copy the images to the laptop and to be able to view them - I don't need to edit them or any such.

Ubuntu :: How To Manipulate Iso Files

Jan 17, 2010

What we want to do: be able to see the contents of an iso image (what files exist in the iso image) as well as being able to add data to the iso file or remove them.In order to be able to see the contents of an iso image we have to follow a process similar of that like mounting a device. In order to do so let us assume that we have the file: example.iso, under /home folder. In order to do so, we have to install the program isomaster (go to synaptic package manager and type isomaster and the program will be displayed) and then open it (via applications->sound&video). Then, browse to where the iso image exists and with the options: remove, extract, e.t.c. do the necessary steps you want. In order to save this "new" iso image with the additions you have made, you have to save it as an iso file. Go to file, save as and your new iso file is ready to be burned.

Security :: Bypassing ISP Using SSH / Manipulate SSH Packets Between Two Computers?

Sep 1, 2010

I setup a SSH server on my computer on a very high port, so that my brother could surf the web through my computer from Iran, since the majority of websites are filtered there.

Today, he told me he cannot connect to my computer. That's why, I got suspicious that they are doing packet based filtering instead of port. Then I decided to change the port to 433 for https, but one of my friend told me that they just banned https in Iran as well.

I was wondering if there's any way I can manipulate SSH packets between two computers so that my brother's ISP won't figure out he's exchanging SSH packets?

Security :: Take A Closer Look Once The Scans Stepped Up A Notch?

Nov 1, 2010

It was recommended that I post the results of a service scan performed against a remote machine. However, before I get flamed for lack of proper etiquette, I asked for advice prior to posting. So, here goes. I have a been getting scanned repeatedly by the same group of addresses for well over 2 months. I decided to take a closer look once the scans stepped up a notch. By "stepped up a notch" I mean more specific. All the originating HOST are using either port 12200 or port 6000. All with one exception, appear to be located in China. The scans are blatant. Over and over again. I noticed some timing between scans that seemed to match up with a European location as well.

The first question would be if I could get in trouble for the remote host actions. I mean, I have noticed pings directed past the router to the internal network now in my linux logs. Could the attacker/scanner be using me as a bounce for other stuff? The scans, as stated before, never stop.

I ran a scan against one of the host out of curiosity. You can check it out at http://pastebin.com/5qcKSgC0. It appeared to be a school in china. Should I report it? IF so, how would aI report it to some guy in china, I don't speak or write Chinese.

Debian Configuration :: Samba Shows In Port Scans

Sep 2, 2010

I just noticed after installing a new server with samba that a portscan will show the samba used ports. This server has two interfaces, a world address eth0 and an intranet eth1. The samba ports show in scanning either interface, even after I changed samba to listen only to the intranet (192.168.x) address.

I am concerned especially about the 139 and 445 ports, which could attract a lot of garbage traffic. This is Debian 5.05 default samba installation.Otherwise similarly installed Ubuntu box with two interfaces does not show samba at all, even though smbd is running and working just fine.
