Debian :: How To Undo 'rm' Command

Aug 26, 2010

I suppose I have a very common problem. While working on my project, I accidentaly hit 'rm file.tex' instead of 'rm file.aux' in the terminal of my Debian and now all of my work is gone. Could you please tell me if it is possible to undo this command? If soI should add that I am just a beginner in using the Linux system and though I have found some advice on my problem on websites, I am unable to follow it on my own. In other words I desperately need somebody to guide my through that process.

Ubuntu :: All Folders Keep Executing Eclipse / "undo" This Custom Command?

Oct 26, 2010

Hey everybody, it seems I did something kinda stupid. So I tried right clicking on a folder and going to "Open With..." then under "Other Application..." I then selected custom command and typed in "eclipse." I thought I would just be able to open the folder as a project, but now it seems it's screwed up all of my folders. Now every time I try to open a folder in the GUI, Eclipse executes. I can still go through folders, delete files, etc. through the terminal, but I'd like to have GUI access as well. Does anyone know how to "undo" this custom command so Eclipse no longer executes?

Fedora :: Can't Undo Wrong Resolution In 10/Gnome?

Mar 28, 2009

setting a resolution that my monitor can't handle, and now I can't figure out how to get back to a setting that my monitor can handle. When I first made the bad setting, the screen went black except for an "Out of Range" message in the middle, and wouldn't let me see anything to put it back. I ended up going to a text screen with a <Ctrl-Alt-F1>, logging in as root, and rebooting. Now, I can use all of my other user IDs (root, KDE test, "email only," etc.) just fine, but if I log in to the one with the bad res. setting, it just blacks the screen and I have to reboot again. The xorg.conf file doesn't even have any options for setting resolutions any more, so there's no way to explicitly disallow the one I set, and "deleting" (renaming) xorg.conf didn't help.

Fedora :: Root Mail Going To My Boss / Undo It?

Jan 14, 2010

I just started a new SysAdmin job on Monday Jan 11, 2010. My predecessor left before I joined the company with NO documentation. All of the system mail (alerts, error messages, informative messages, etc.) that's going to root is being redirected to my boss. I checked .mailrc and /etc/aliases for an alias that would equate root with my boss, but couldn't find anything. My boss doesn't want to be receiving these emails. Where else can the previous SA could have done this operation. How can I sub my email address for that of my boss' to be receiving these alert messages.

Ubuntu :: Undo Encrypted Home Folder?

What if I want to switch distros down the road? What if I have to boot from a live cd to back up files? Is there a way to "undo" the encrypted home folder permanently? I don't mind having it on it's own partition, it's just the encryption that makes me worry.

General :: Undo Login Setting From Console

Dec 26, 2010

I'm brand new to ubuntu and very green when it comes to Linux in general.I have recently installed Ubuntu Desktop version 10.10 for my media pc (a friend of mine showed me xbmc, awesome!). I modified my install so that I don't have to enter a password when turning it on.The problem seems to be that when I did the install I chose to encrypt my home directory. Now, since I don't enter a password, the machine spews a few errors and does nothing. I finally got it to boot to a console window however I don't know how to undo what I did from the gui.I'm basically trying to get to System > Admin > Login Window > Security without the gui and "check the box" to require a password on login.Any clue as to which config file this setting is stored in?

Ubuntu :: Boot Stops At Splash Screen Waiting For Sdc1 10.04 / Undo It?

Jun 6, 2010

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04. I'm trying to become familiar with the file system. I noticed my MP3 player (USB) is not mounted automatically when I plug it into the USB cable. I searched Google to find out how to auto mount this device and it worked. However, I didn't give this enough thought to what I was doing I guess. Now if the MP3 player is not connected to the USB cable the boot process stops at the splash screen waiting for the device. The window on the screen states the following:

The disk drive for /media/sdc1/ is not ready or not present. Continue to wait or press S to skip mounting or M to manual recovery.

I don't remember what I did to start this whole mess so I don't know how to undo it? Could someone please help me undo this? I would like the device to auto mount ONLY if it's plugged in if this is possible.
