Fedora :: Remove KDE And Gnome?

Sep 1, 2010

I have made the choice to go with the LXDE desktop and want to completely remove Gnome and KDE. I know that you can just pick which environment you want at login, but I want to remove Gnome and KDE because they are both quite large and I am trying to optimize my system's drive space and memory.

I have issued the following command to remove KDE, my question is. what packages do I really need? Is this process wiping files and apps that I need? See results below. What command do I use if I want to remove only some of the packages and keep the others?

[Code]...

Fedora :: Remove A Panel From GNOME In Terminal?

Jul 14, 2010

I created a new panel in Gnome (Fedora 12) and it wasn't showing up right. So I just told it to make another (with the same results), and finally one more. So with the two that are there by default, that's 5 total panels... None of the newly created panels where displaying at all. But after creating the last one the system froze up. Now when I try to boot into fedora my system locks up as it's trying to load GNOME...

Is there any way for me to remove those panels through BASH? So I can just boot to a prompt and get them removed. After that I imagine GNOME will load correctly again...

2) Enable sharing of my drives so I can put files from Laptop into this computer

Now I have successfully Installed Ubuntu Server (Finally) but then messed up cuz I installed the Gnome GUI and now cant find any place where I can type any sudo commands. vsftpd should work for me right?

CentOS 5 :: Want To Remove X/Gnome Completely?

Jan 18, 2010

I'm installing CentOS from the netinstall in Virtualbox now. I was about to post a different thread because Anaconda kept crashing on me. Whenever I would try to uncheck Gnome, clicking next would always fail. I really don't want Gnome, but I need to get the VM installed, so I just accepted the default software selection. (It's not an iso problem either because I originally tried the DVD as well.)I've been using Linux for several years, but I need to use a GUI-less server. I found some instructions on how to disable X by entering runlevel 3, but that's not what I want to do. Is there a meta-package that I can remove "yum remove" and it will remove all the GUI dependencies, or perhaps something like "yum groupremove"?

Ubuntu Servers :: Remove Gnome From Server?

Jul 9, 2010

It's my first experience with *nix OS. I needed server for following purposes:

Fileserver on samba
Internet gateway
VPN gateway
DNS

I installed ubuntu 10.04 server edition, but wasn't able to work without graphical environment. So I installed gnome. I installed and tweaked samba and bind9 and network manager and all works fine for now.
So I have a question. What will happen if I remove gnome? Especially with network manager? And what will I gain in performance. It's important because I have only an old Dell Optiplex 150 (933/512/10) serving as a server.

Ubuntu :: Remove Title Bar Completely In Gnome?

Jul 26, 2010

What I am trying to do is remove the title bar completely in gnome, it would be nice to be able to choose which applications had the bar and which did not, but I would be perfectly satisfied with just removing them from every window. I assume this is controlled by the window manager which would make it a metacity setting? Anyway, I have an 11in screen on my netbook and I cannot stand having such a big chunk of real estate wasted by such a useless feature, especially when I can perform all the window functions with keyboard shortcuts.

I assume Unity is doing it now, or maybe zeitgeist?I've grep'd through .local and .config, and checked Startup Applications but it still loads gnome-panel every session.
