Fedora :: How To Overburn CDs Or DVDs
Dec 28, 2010
I have both Brasero and GnomeBaker and none of them can overburn CDs or DVDs, even they cannot burn data DVDs if the folder which I want to burn has an amount of files of 4.4 Gb (when the DVD size is 4.7 Gb!). How can I overburn CDs or DVDs?

I need to burn tracks that total to 80-82 minutes on 80min CDs. However, Brasero stops the burning process right at the start complaining there is not enough space on the CD. I tried having Brasero create an image and burn it with k3b. However, Brasero creates a .cue and a .bin file, but when loading the .cue file, k3b says that it does not seem to be a valid image, even when selecting ".cue/.bin image" or "audio cue file" as the image type. k3b itself refuses to burn .mp3 files without manual conversion. what should I do to achieve my goal?

I'm running Fedora 13 on my Toshiba laptop and I cant play DVDs. If I try to play a DVD using VLC player nothing seems to happen. A similar thing happens if I try to watch it in the "Dragon Player" that came with Fedora, except it doesn't play any videos at all (that's why I downloaded VLC). How can I get DVDs to play?

I am looking for a way to batch convert from DVDs to avi - ideally choosing the resolution of my output device (for use on an Android/iPhone). I really want to do it automatically/via a script from the command line if possible.

I tried mounting a new CD, but nothing happened. I tried again, with a CD I'd used before with the same results. I tried a DVD in the same drive and it mounted OK, so it's not hardware. (I haven't had time until now to report this.) The box is running F 14 and is fully updated. Below is the results from /var/log/messages saved from June 28:

I have some problems reading dvds using either xine or totem
Here's the output from running xine dvd://
This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.6.

libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.10 for DVD access
libdvdread: Attempting to use device /dev/mapper/vg_inga-lv_root mounted on / for CSS authentication

I know that this issue has been addressed on the forum before, but I haven't found any threads that solves my problem.

After being puzzled why every guide saying to install the 'libdvdcss' package wasn't working, the package simply not being found; it turns out that in the shift to RPM Fusion, that libdvdcss was the only package that Livna was still going to carry due to RPM Fusion's refusal - in case you didn't know.
I've installed all of the gstreamer plugins, xine-extra-libs and libdvdcss, all of the ones that are suggested. Yet I still cannot play a DVD with VLC. I was wandering if you could help me diagnose why?

I downloaded 64-bit fedora12 iso DVD image and created a DVD. When I tried to boot, the CD does not boot. I checked the documentation to see whether book.iso or any other file needs to be copied along with. My question is:
- What are the files I need to copy to a DVD for the DVD to boot up straight up from the DVD...?
- If not, is there another way to get this fresh installation done.
I have 32-bit Fedora 11 installed in a machine, but need 64-Fedora to do some testing, before going with RH Linux.

I'm trying to install fedora 10 via dvd without a lot of success. i'm doing this on an old hp 8765c computer. it has a sansung sd-612 dvd-rom player. the dvd's i burned would not boot. so, i checked the dvd. sha1sum. check verify dvd when burned. check boot on system where the dvd burned. check dvd verify when bootedc check ok, lets check the dvd player. From i can see on the web, this player had issues about not playing dvds. some relate to driver issue when upgrading me to xp. and, some refer to updating firmware. lots of post about the dvd player not playing dvds. None with a succinct solution.
Well, if anyone has a solution for updating the firmware for a samsung sd-623 dvd player, it would be helpful. For now, installing from the internal dvd player isn't going to work for hardware reasons. Plan B lets try installing from the dvd using a network attached dvd server. sing the net install cd. use linux askmethod, use url to point to the dvd. the image in retreived, select all the defautl options, format the drive, does the package selection, does the package dependencies, but errors on the retriving packages. puts up the download retry message. then show message about not being able to retreive the authcong-gkt... rpm. just let the net install go. i get to the nic configuration, it errors out. probably network manager issue about trying to set a static ip address.........

I'm trying to find out which application will copy DVD discs (video and data) in raw mode. Something that works for DVDs like cdrdao works for CDs. I tried using cdrdao but it errors out because the DVD disc is too big for it. I tried looking at Brasero but I can't tell if it offers a raw option. I see that Brasero lets you copy a DVD to a RAW image, then burn the RAW image back to a DVD-R. If Brasero uses RAW mode to do a direct copy, this would essentially do the same thing, but I can't tell if that is what it does. But, I think this will work.

Prerequisites :
The GIMP.
Make sure you have the "Gutenprint Printer Drivers Package" and "GIMP plugin for gutenprint" installed (add/remove software, search for gutenprint). A printer that uses a tray loading mechanism for printing disc media.
Procedure :
Open/create the image with the GIMP. I find that an image size of 1394 x 1394 is ideal for normal size discs. To create a working area in the image, first create a white circle. To do this, use the circle selection tool and position the cursor at position 0,0 (top left). Then, while holding the shift key down, hold left click and drag the cursor to the bottom right position, which should be 1394,1394. Fill the selection with white colour. Depending on the hub size of your disc you need to also cut out an area in the centre of the white circle approximately 22 mm in diameter. Position the circle selection cursor 11mm above the centre of the image, and 11mm to the left of the centre of the image. Then hold Shift down, hold left click and drag the cursor until the selected area is 22mm x 22mm. Then cut the selection. Now create a new layer above the white circle and create your image, keeping inside the white circle and outside the centre "hole".
If you are using non full face discs, make the centre "hole" bigger accordingly. Create 2 new background layers, one black and one white. The black is so you can preview the image with the correct shape, and the white one is for use when exporting the final finished image for printing. Remember to make the white layer above the black layer, or make the black layer invisible when exporting the image. I have attached a template for your immediate use. Once your image is finished, you should have a white square image, with your graphics arranged within a circle. White is not printed, so you don't need transparency around the edges. Don't put graphics too close to the edges of the circle or you will get ink on the plastic which never dries. (at least not until you have smeared it on your fabulous artwork ! ) Save the file as the default GIMP xcf format to preserve the layers then export it to png.
To print the image onto the disc. With the image open in the GIMP, In File > Page Setup set the paper size to CD - 5 inch and apply. Then go to File > Print with Gutenprint. Use the option to set up printer and find your make and model. Once you have the correct printer selected, lots of extra options become available.
My Printer settings are:
Print Quality - Best
Media Type - Photo paper
Media Source - Print to CD
CD hub size - Normal
Ink Set - Epson Standard inks
Resolution - 720 dpi
Ink Type - 6 color photo
Page Size - CD - 5 inch
(All the other settings are left as default)
On the Output tab there are more options for adjusting the print quality. Just click "Adjust Output". If you have adjusted the output, close that window then click "Print and Save Settings", otherwise just click "Print and Save Settings". It should fire up straight away. These settings are based on my Epson R200, so you may have to tweak them for your printer model.

I recently installed fedora and enjoying learning what it can do. One of the things that I wanted to do was play DVDs. I installed vlc and the libvdreader package but am unable to play DVDs. I even used "movie player", and the program said, fedora does not have the right codecs to play the DVD. Does anybody know what I need to do? And what codecs that I need to download if any?

My DVD-ROM drive seems to have issues under Fedora 15.This is the "normal" spin with GNOME3, all updates have been installed.First off, the drive seems to get "stuck" will not eject any media once inserted.Occaisionally, if I just keep pressing the eject button, the media tray will jump out, but then will immediately pull itself back in without any interaction from me.Second issue: video DVDs do not mount. It does not seem to matter if libdvdcss is installed or not. When a DVD video disc is inserted, the DVD drive completely disappears from Nautilus' Computer window. Once I eject the DVD (after pressing eject 50 times) the drive comes back to the Computer window. The drive is a Plextor DVD-RW PX-755SA connected via SATAI have tried using either regular IDE or AHCI configuration in the BIOS for it, no change either way.The drive works fine under Ubuntu and OpenSUSE, but I like F15 better and would like to get this fixed.

I have a Fujitsu Lifebook A3130, and I have semi-recently installed Fedora 11. I am still a fairly new linux user, and would like to continue to use this great open source software, but it seems my DVD drive fails to play DVD's. The specs are here, but unfortunately they don't give much detail as to the model number of the drive in question. I insert the disk, and it pops up with the following dialogue:
You have just inserted a Video DVD. Choose what application to launch. Select how to open "disk name" and weather to perform this action in the future for other media of type "video DVD". It then suggests opening the disk in "Movie Player", and provides a check box for "Always perform this action". I hit OK, and it seems to try to open Movie Player, but then comes up with this error:
An error occurred
Could not read from resource.
Then it provides an "OK" button. When I click the button it goes back to Movie Player, and proceeds to not show any video.
I just tried to open the disk inside of Movie Player, via the "Movie" menu, then clicking "play disk 'disk name'", but once again I get an error:
Totem cannot play this type of media (DVD) because it does not have the appropriate plugins to be able to read from the disk. Please install the necessary plugins and restart Totem to be able to play this media.
And again it provides an OK button, which diverts back to the main Movie Player window.

I want to buy another laptop. I want to use FC on it. I need bluray because I want to save data on bluray disks of 25 gb (better than dvds, more space). I have one option, a fujitsu that has bluray writer, big display (I have another one, other model, same size and it's working fine with Fc14, only some small issues).
Second option is a Dell (I had an older dell inspiron before, which worked fine with FC), more expensive, lacking a writer, but it can read bluray. If I take this, I would have to also buy an external bluray writer. Has nice specs, but I am really worried about the graphic card, whether I can make it work with Fc14. I saw some people having problems with linux and this graphic card, while searching on google.
Here's specs for both (sorry for the language from website, but I found in English other specs than these, I guess the specs can be read easily): Dell XPS L702x and FUJITSU Lifebook NH570 I am inclining more towards the Fujitsu, but haven't decided yet.

I have still not succeeded in getting my Region 2 DVDs to play in Ubuntu 10.04. I used something called Regionset to reset the player from zero to 2 for playback in the UK but although it is now set to Region 2 it will only play Region 0 DVDs. I have tried all sorts of tricks with codecs and installing VLC and (of course) Ubuntu Restricted Extras but no joy.

I have used my PC for watching videos for some time. Normalmente with VLC under Ubuntu 10.4. Recently though I have two videos I brought from the States (I am in Argentina) and neither will work. They are ok on my DVD player, but not on the PC. In VLC the control pannel opens, but the video window opens a second and closes. In the Mplayer it says it could not read from source.

At the Debian download web page, there are many choices for an installation CD. There also is a 4 DVD set. I presume the CD is to get a base system installed. I presume the 4 DVD set is the whole ball of wax.
Yet presumptions are not always a good thing. So I would appreciate an explanation about the difference between the two options or just point my nose to the appropriate link. I browsed the Debian online docs, but I did not find an explanation. I am getting older too, so perhaps I saw the explanation and clicked right on by.
